Inter-layer valence bonds and two-component theory for high-$T_c$ superconductivity of La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under pressure

The recent discovery of high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity in bilayer nickelate La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ under high pressure has stimulated great interest concerning its pairing mechanism. We argue that the weak coupling model from the almost fully-filled $d_{z^{2}}$ bonding band cannot give rise to its high $T_{c}$, and thus propose a strong coupling model based on local inter-layer spin singlets of Ni-$d_{z^{2}}$ electrons due to their strong on-site Coulomb repulsion. This leads to a minimal effective model that contains local pairing of $d_{z^{2}}$ electrons and a considerable hybridization with near quarter-filled itinerant $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ electrons on nearest-neighbor sites. Their strong coupling provides a unique two-component scenario to achieve high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity. Our theory highlights the importance of the bilayer structure of superconducting La$_{3}$Ni$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and points out a potential route for the exploration of more high-$T_{c}$ superconductors.

High Temperature Superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

Motivated by the recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in bilayer La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure, we study its electronic properties and superconductivity due to strong electron correlation. Using the inversion symmetry, we decouple the low-energy electronic structure into block-diagonal symmetric and antisymmetric sectors. We find that the antisymmetric sector can be reduced to a one-band system near half filling, while the symmetric bands occupied by about two electrons are heavily overdoped individually. Using the strong coupling mean field theory, we obtain strong superconducting pairing with $B_{1g}$ symmetry in the antisymmetric sector. We propose that due to the spin-orbital exchange coupling between the two sectors, $B_{1g}$ pairing is induced in the symmetric bands, which in-turn boosts the pairing gap in the antisymmetric band and enhances the high-temperature superconductivity with a congruent $d$-wave symmetry in pressurized La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.

Theoretical proposal to obtain strong Majorana evidence from scanning tunneling spectroscopy of a vortex with a dissipative environment

It is predicted that a vortex in a topological superconductor contains a Majorana zero mode (MZM). The confirmative Majorana signature, i.e., the $2e^2/h$ quantized conductance, however is easily sabotaged by unavoidable interruptions, e.g. instrument broadening, non-Majorana signal, and extra particle channels. We propose to avoid the signal interruption by introducing disorder-induced dissipation that couples to the tip-sample tunneling. With dissipation involved, we highlight three features, each of which alone can provide a strong evidence to identify MZM. Firstly, dissipation suppresses a finite-energy Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) conductance peak into a valley, while it does not split MZM zero-bias conductance peak. Secondly, we predict a dissipation-dependent scaling feature of the zero-bias conductance peak. Thirdly, the introduced dissipation manifests the MZM signal by suppressing non-topological CdGM modes. Importantly, the observation of these features does not require a quantized conductance value $2e^2/h$.

Effects of spin orbit coupling on proximity induced superconductivity

We investigate the effect of spin orbit coupling on proximity induced superconductivity in a normal metal attached to a superconductor. Specifically, we consider a heterostructure where the presence of interfaces gives rise to a Rashba spin orbit coupling. The properties of the induced superconductivity in these systems are addressed within the tunneling Hamiltonian formalism. We find that the spin orbit coupling induces a mixture of singlet and triplet pairing and, under specific circumstances, an odd frequency, even parity, spin triplet pairs can arise. We also address the effect of impurity scattering on the induced pairs, and discuss our results in context of heterostructures consisting of materials with spin-momentum locking.

Meissner effect induced Majorana zero modes at small magnetic field

One fundamental difficulty in realizing Majorana zero modes (MZMs) is the required high magnetic field, which causes serious issues, e.g., shrinks the superconducting gap, reduces topological region, and weakens their robustness against disorder. In this work, we propose that the Meissner effect can bring the topological superconducting phase to a superconductor/topological-insulator/superconductor (SC/TI/SC) hybrid system. Remarkably, the required magnetic field strength ($<$10 mT) to support MZMs has been reduced by several orders of magnitude compared to that ($>$0.5 T) in the previous schemes. Tuning the phase difference between the top and bottom superconductors can control the number and position of the MZMs. In addition, we account for the electrostatic potential in the superconductor/topological-insulator (SC/TI) interface through the self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson calculation, which shows the experimental accessibility of our proposal. Our proposal only needs a small magnetic eld of less than 10 mT and is robust against the chemical potential fluctuation, which makes SC/TI/SC hybrid an ideal Majorana platform.

Two-stage superconductivity in the Hatsugai-Kohmoto-BCS model

Superconductivity in strongly correlated electrons can emerge out from a normal state that is beyond the Landau's Fermi liquid paradigm, often dubbed as "non-Fermi liquid". While the theory for non-Fermi liquid is still not yet conclusive, a recent study on the exactly-solvable Hatsugai-Kohmoto (HK) model has suggested a non-Fermi liquid ground state whose Green's function resembles the Yang-Rice-Zhang ansatz for cuprates [P. W. Phillips, L. Yeo and E. W. Huang, Nat. Phys. $\bf{16}$, 1175 (2020)]. Similar to the effect of on-site Coulomb repulsion in the Hubbard model, the repulsive interaction in the HK model divides the momentum space into three parts: empty, single-occupied and double-occupied regions, that are separated from each other by two distinct Fermi surfaces. In the presence of an additional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS)-type pairing interaction of a moderate strength, we show that the system exhibits a "two-stage superconductivity" feature as temperature decreases: a first-order superconducting transition occurs at a temperature $T_{\rm c}$ that is followed by a sudden increase of the superconducting order parameter at a lower temperature $T_{\rm c}^{\prime}<T_{\rm c}$. At the first stage, $T_{\rm c}^{\prime}<T<T_{\rm c}$, the pairing function arises and the entropy is released only in the vicinity of the two Fermi surfaces; while at the second stage, $T<T_{\rm c}^{\prime}$, the pairing function becomes significant and the entropy is further released in deep (single-occupied) region in the Fermi sea. The phase transitions are analyzed within the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Our work sheds new light on unconventional superconductivity in strongly correlated electrons.

Strain-induced enhancement of $T_c$ in infinite-layer Pr$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ films

The mechanism of unconventional superconductivity in correlated materials remains a great challenge in condensed matter physics. The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates, as analog to high-Tc cuprates, has opened a new route to tackle this challenge. By growing 8 nm Pr0.8Sr0.2NiO2 films on the (LaAlO3)0.3(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 substrate, we successfully raise the transition temperature Tc from 9 K in the widely studied SrTiO3-substrated nickelates into 15 K. By combining x-ray absorption spectroscopy with the first-principles and many-body simulations, we find a positive correlation between Tc and the pre-edge peak intensity, which can be attributed to the hybridization between Ni and O orbitals induced by the strain. Our result suggests that structural engineering can further enhance unconventional superconductivity, and the charge-transfer property plays a crucial role in the pairing strength.

Enhanced two-component superconductivity in CoSi2/TiSi2 heterojunctions

We report enhanced two-component superconductivity in (CoSi2/Si)/TiSi2 superconductor/normal-metal (S/N) heterojunctions. An enhanced superconducting transition temperature about twice that of CoSi2 and an upper critical field about 20 times bigger than that of epitaxial CoSi2/Si films were found. The tunneling spectra of three-terminal S/N junctions show pronounced zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCPs) that signify penetration of odd-frequency, spin-triplet and even-parity Cooper pairs in TiSi2 from triplet dominant pairing in CoSi2/Si driven by symmetry reduction at the CoSi2/Si interface. Both the enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature and the ZBCPs are found to be more pronounced if TiSi2 is made more diffusive.

Finite-Size Scaling Analysis of the Planck's Quantum-Driven Integer Quantum Hall Transition in Spin-$1/2$ Kicked Rotor Model

The quantum kicked rotor (QKR) model is a prototypical system in the research of quantum chaos. In a spin-$1/2$ QKR, tuning the effective Planck parameter realizes a series of transitions between dynamical localization phases, which closely resembles the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect and the plateau transitions. In this work, we devise and apply the finite-size scaling analysis to the transitions in the spin-$1/2$ QKR model. We obtain an estimate of the critical exponent at the transition point, $ν=2.62(9)$, which is consistent with the IQH plateau transition universality class. We also give a precise estimate of the universal diffusion rate at the metallic critical state, $σ^{*}=0.3253(12)$.

Controllable Majorana vortex states in iron-based superconducting nanowires

There has been experimental evidence for the Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in solid state systems, which are building blocks for potential topological quantum computing. It is important to design devices, in which MZMs are easy to manipulate and possess a broad topological non-trivial parameter space for fusion and braiding. Here, we propose that the Majorana vortex states in iron-based superconducting nanowires fulfill these desirable conditions. This system has a radius-induced topological phase transition, giving a lower limit to the radius of the nanowire. In the topological phase, there is only one pair of MZMs in the nanowire over a wide range of radius, chemical potential, and external magnetic field. The wavefunction of the MZM has a sizable distribution at the side edge of the nanowire. This property enables one to control the interaction of the MZMs in neighboring vortex nanowires, and paves the way for Majorana fusion and braiding.

Topological Superconductivity in an s-wave Superconductor and Its Implication to Iron-based Superconductors

In the presence of both space and time reversal symmetries, an s-wave A1g superconducting state is usually topologically trivial. Here we demonstrate that an exception can take place in a type of nonsymmorphic lattice structures. We specify the demonstration in a system with a centrosymmetric space group P4/nmm, the symmetry group that governs iron-based superconductors, by showing the existence of a second-order topological state protected by a mirror symmetry. The topological superconductivity is featured by 2Z degenerate Dirac cones on the (1,0) edge, and Z pairs of Majorana modes at the intersection between the (1,1) and (1,-1) edges. The topological invariance and Fermi surface criterion for the topological state are provided. Moreover, we point out that the previously proposed s-wave state in iron-based superconductors, which features a sign-changed superconducting order parameter between two electron pockets, is such a topological state. Thus, these results not only open a new route to pursue topological superconductivity, but also establish a measurable quantity to settle one long-lasting debate on the pairing nature of iron-based superconductors.

A Raman Probe of Phonons and Electron-phonon Interactions in NbIrTe4

The semimetal NbIrTe4 has been proposed to be a Type-II Weyl semimetal with 8 pairs of opposite Chirality Weyl nodes which are very close to the Fermi energy. This topological electronic structure is made possible because of the broken inversion symmetry of NbIrTe4 which is an orthorhombic crystal with Td symmetry. Using micro-Raman scattering as a probe, we observe the frequencies and symmetries of 19 phonon modes (ranging from 40 to 260 cm-1) in this material and compare to Density Functional Theory calculations. Using angular and polarization resolved Raman scattering for green (514 nm) and red (633 nm) laser excitation, we show that it is possible to extract the excitation energy dependence of the Raman tensor elements associated with each measurable phonon mode. We show that these tensor elements vary substantially in a small energy range which reflects a strong variation of the electron-phonon coupling for these modes.

Effects of spin orbit coupling in superconducting proximity devices -- application to $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures

Motivated by the recent findings of unconventional superconductivity in $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures, we study the effect of interface induced Rashba spin orbit coupling on the conductance of a three terminal "T" shape superconducting device. We calculate the differential conductance for this device within the quasi-classical formalism that includes the mixing of triplet-singlet pairing due to the Rashba spin orbit coupling. We discuss our result in the light of the conductance spectra reported by Chiu {\it et al.} for $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures.

Observation of triplet superconductivity in CoSi$_2$/TiSi$_2$ heterostructures

Unconventional superconductivity and in particular triplet superconductivity have been front and center of topological materials and quantum technology research. Here we report our observation of triplet superconductivity in nonmagnetic CoSi$_2$/TiSi$_2$ heterostructures on silicon. CoSi$_2$ undergoes a sharp superconducting transition at a critical temperature $T_c \approx$ 1.5 K, while TiSi$_2$ is a normal metal. We investigate conductance spectra of both two-terminal CoSi$_2$/TiSi$_2$ tunnel junctions and three-terminal T-shaped CoSi$_2$/TiSi$_2$ superconducting proximity structures. We report an unexpectedly large spin-orbit coupling in CoSi$_2$ heterostructures. Below $T_c$, we observe (1) a narrow zero-bias conductance peak on top of a broad hump, accompanied by two symmetric side dips in the tunnel junctions, (2) a narrow zero-bias conductance peak in T-shaped structures, and (3) hysteresis in the junction magnetoresistance. These three independent and complementary observations are indicative of chiral $p$-wave pairing in CoSi$_2$/TiSi$_2$ heterostructures. This chiral triplet superconductivity and the excellent fabrication compatibility of CoSi$_2$ and TiSi$_2$ with present-day silicon integrated-circuit technology facilitate full scalability for potential use in quantum-computing devices.

Hidden anomalous Hall effect in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ with chiral superconductivity dominated by the Ru $d_{xy}$ orbital

The polar Kerr effect in superconducting Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ implies finite ac anomalous Hall conductivity. Since intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is not expected for a chiral superconducting pairing developed on the single Ru $d_{xy}$ orbital, multiorbital chiral pairing actively involving the Ru $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals has been proposed as a potential mechanism. Here we propose that AHE could still arise even if the chiral superconductivity is predominantly driven by the $d_{xy}$ orbital. This is demonstrated through two separate models which take into account subdominant orbitals in the Cooper pairing, one involving the oxygen $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals in the RuO$_2$ plane, and another the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. In both models, finite orbital mixing between the dominant $d_{xy}$ and the other orbitals may induce inter-orbital pairing between them, and the resultant states support intrinsic AHE, with Kerr rotation angles that could potentially reconcile with the experimental observation. Our proposal therefore sheds new light on the microscopic pairing in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We also show that intrinsic Hall effect is generally absent for non-chiral states such as $\mathcal{S}+i\mathcal{D}$, $\mathcal{D}+i\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{D}+i\mathcal{G}$, which provides a clear constraint on the symmetry of the superconducting order in this material.

Interacting topological mirror excitonic insulator in one dimension

We introduce the topological mirror excitonic insulator as a new type of interacting topological crystalline phase in one dimension. Its mirror-symmetry-protected topological properties are driven by exciton physics, and it manifests in the quantized bulk polarization and half-charge modes on the boundary. And the bosonization analysis is performed to demonstrate its robustness against strong correlation effects in one dimension. Besides, we also show that Rashba nanowires and Dirac semimetal nanowires could provide ideal experimental platforms to realize this new topological mirror excitonic insulating state. Its experimental consequences, such as quantized tunneling conductance in the tunneling measurement, are also discussed.

Distinct pairing symmetries of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates

We report theoretical predictions on the pairing symmetry of the newly discovered superconducting nickelate Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{2}$ based on the renormalized mean-field theory for a generalized model Hamiltonian proposed in [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{101}, 020501(R)]. For practical values of the key parameters, we find a transition between a gapped ($d+is$)-wave pairing state in the small doping region to a gapless $d$-wave pairing state in the large doping region, accompanied by an abrupt Fermi surface change at the critical doping. Our overall phase diagram also shows the possibility of a ($d+is$)- to $s$-wave transition if the electron hybridization is relatively small. In either case, the low-doping ($d+is$)-wave state is a gapped superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry. Our results are in qualitative agreement with recent experimental observations and predict several key features to be examined in future measurements.

Universal behavior of the thermal Hall conductivity

We report theoretical and experimental analyses of the thermal Hall conductivity in correlated systems. For both fermionic and bosonic excitations with nontrivial topology, we show that at "intermediate" temperatures, the thermal Hall conductivity exhibits an unexpected universal scaling with a simple exponential form. At low temperatures, it behaves differently and reflects the spectral properties of underlying excitations. Our predictions are examined as examples in two prototype compounds, the quantum paraelectric SrTiO$_3$ and the spin-liquid compound RuCl$_3$. The experimental data can be largely covered by our proposed minimal phenomenological model independent of microscopic details, revealing dominant bosonic contributions in SrTiO$_3$ and gapped fermionic excitations in RuCl$_3$. Our work establishes a phenomenological link between microscopic models and experimental data and provides a unified basis for analyzing the thermal Hall conductivity in correlated systems over a wide temperature region.
