Optimized Dynamical Decoupling for Time Dependent Hamiltonians

The validity of optimized dynamical decoupling (DD) is extended to analytically time dependent Hamiltonians. As long as an expansion in time is possible the time dependence of the initial Hamiltonian does not affect the efficiency of optimized dynamical decoupling (UDD, Uhrig DD). This extension provides the analytic basis for (i) applying UDD to effective Hamiltonians in time dependent reference frames, for instance in the interaction picture of fast modes and for (ii) its application in hierarchical DD schemes with $π$ pulses about two perpendicular axes in spin space. to suppress general decoherence, i.e., longitudinal relaxation and dephasing.

Rigorous Bounds for Optimal Dynamical Decoupling

We present rigorous performance bounds for the optimal dynamical decoupling pulse sequence protecting a quantum bit (qubit) against pure dephasing. Our bounds apply under the assumption of instantaneous pulses and of bounded perturbing environment and qubit-environment Hamiltonians. We show that if the total sequence time is fixed the optimal sequence can be used to make the distance between the protected and unperturbed qubit states arbitrarily small in the number of applied pulses. If, on the other hand, the minimum pulse interval is fixed and the total sequence time is allowed to scale with the number of pulses, then longer sequences need not always be advantageous. The rigorous bound may serve as testbed for approximate treatments of optimal decoupling in bounded models of decoherence.

Interaction Quenches of Fermi Gases

It is shown that the jump in the momentum distribution of Fermi gases evolves smoothly for small and intermediate times once an interaction between the fermions is suddenly switched on. The jump does not vanish abruptly. The loci in momentum space where the jumps occur are those of the noninteracting Fermi sea. No relaxation of the Fermi surface geometry takes place.

Generic susceptibilities of the half-filled Hubbard model in infinite dimensions

Around a metal-to-insulator transition driven by repulsive interaction (Mott transition) the single particle excitations and the collective excitations are equally important. Here we present results for the generic susceptibilities at zero temperature in the half-filled Hubbard model in infinite dimensions. Profiting from the high resolution of dynamic density-matrix renormalization at all energies, results for the charge, spin and Cooper-pair susceptibilities in the metallic and the insulating phase are computed. In the insulating phase, an almost saturated local magnetic moment appears. In the metallic phase a pronounced low-energy peak is found in the spin response.

Concatenated Control Sequences based on Optimized Dynamic Decoupling

Two recent developments in quantum control, concatenation and optimization of pulse intervals, are combined to yield a strategy to suppress unwanted couplings in quantum systems to high order. Longitudinal relaxation and transverse dephasing can be suppressed so that systems with a small splitting between their energy levels can be kept isolated from their environment. The required number of pulses grows exponentially with the desired order but is only the square root of the number needed if only concatenation is used. An approximate scheme even brings the number down to polynomial growth. The approach is expected to be useful for quantum information and for high-precision nuclear magnetic resonance.

Emergent Collective Modes and Kinks in Electronic Dispersions

Recently, it was shown that strongly correlated metallic fermionic systems [Nature Phys. 3, 168 (2007)] generically display kinks in the dispersion of single fermions without the coupling to collective modes. Here we provide compelling evidence that the physical origin of these kinks are emerging internal collective modes of the fermionic systems. In the Hubbard model under study these modes are identified to be spin fluctuations which are the precursors of the spin excitations in the insulating phase. In spite of their damping the emergent modes give rise to signatures very similar to features of models including coupling to external modes.

Exact Results on Dynamical Decoupling by $π$-Pulses in Quantum Information Processes

The aim of dynamical decoupling consists in the suppression of decoherence by appropriate coherent control of a quantum register. Effectively, the interaction with the environment is reduced. In particular, a sequence of $π$ pulses is considered. Here we present exact results on the suppression of the coupling of a quantum bit to its environment by optimized sequences of $π$ pulses. The effect of various cutoffs of the spectral density of the environment is investigated. As a result we show that the harder the cutoff is the better an optimized pulse sequence can deal with it. For cutoffs which are neither completely hard nor very soft we advocate iterated optimized sequences.

Single-Particle Dynamics in the Vicinity of the Mott-Hubbard Metal-to-Insulator Transition

The single-particle dynamics close to a metal-to-insulator transition induced by strong repulsive interaction between the electrons is investigated. The system is described by a half-filled Hubbard model which is treated by dynamic mean-field theory evaluated by high-resolution dynamic density-matrix renormalization. We provide theoretical spectra with momentum resolution which facilitate the comparison to photoelectron spectroscopy.

Keeping a Quantum Bit Alive by Optimized $π$-Pulse Sequences

A general strategy to maintain the coherence of a quantum bit is proposed. The analytical result is derived rigorously including all memory and back-action effects. It is based on an optimized $π$-pulse sequence for dynamic decoupling extending the Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) cycle. The optimized sequence is very efficient, in particular for strong couplings to the environment.

Hardcore Magnons in the S=1/2 Heisenberg Model on the Square Lattice

We propose a versatile approach to treat commonly arising constraints. It is illustrated for interacting magnons of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice. For systems of $L\times L$ sites a non-perturbative continuous unitary transformation (CUT) is used to derive an effective Hamiltonian conserving the number of magnons. They are bosonic particles with a hardcore constraint which is captured by a local, repulsive interaction U. The limits $U\to\infty$ and $L\to\infty$ are achieved by extrapolation. The residual spin gap $Δ_1$ is smaller than 0.01J reflecting the gapless nature of the magnons. The one-magnon dispersion displays all known characteristics.

Electron spectra close to a metal-to-insulator transition

A high-resolution investigation of the electron spectra close to the metal-to-insulator transition in dynamic mean-field theory is presented. An all-numerical, consistent confirmation of a smooth transition at zero temperature is provided. In particular, the separation of energy scales is verified. Unexpectedly, sharp peaks at the inner Hubbard band edges occur in the metallic regime. They are signatures of the important interaction between single-particle excitations and collective modes.

Spectral Densities from Dynamic Density-Matrix Renormalization

Dynamic density-matrix renormalization provides valuable numerical information on dynamic correlations by computing convolutions of the corresponding spectral densities. Here we discuss and illustrate how and to which extent such data can be deconvolved to retrieve the wanted spectral densities. We advocate a nonlinear deconvolution scheme which minimizes the bias in the ansatz for the spectral density. The procedure is illustrated for the line shape and width of the Kondo peak (low energy feature) and for the line shape of the Hubbard satellites (high energy feature) of the single impurity Anderson model. It is found that the Hubbard satellites are strongly asymmetric.

Systematic Mapping of the Hubbard Model to the Generalized t-J Model

The generalized t-J model conserving the number of double occupancies is constructed from the Hubbard model at and in the vicinity of half-filling at strong coupling. The construction is realized by a self-similar continuous unitary transformation. The flow equation is closed by a truncation scheme based on the spatial range of processes. We analyze the conditions under which the t-J model can be set up and we find that it can only be defined for sufficiently large interaction. There, the parameters of the effective model are determined.

Thermodynamics of a Spin-1/2 Chain Coupled to Einstein Phonons

A high order series expansion is employed to study the thermodynamical properties of a S=1/2 chain coupled to dispersionless phonons. The results are obtained without truncating the phonon subspace since the series expansion is performed formally in the overall exchange coupling J. The results are used to investigate various parameter regimes, e.g. the adiabatic and antiadiabatic limit as well as the intermediate regime which is difficult to investigate by other methods. We find that dynamic phonon effects become manifest when more than one thermodynamic quantity is analyzed.

Spectral properties of the dimerized and frustrated $S=1/2$ chain

Spectral densities are calculated for the dimerized and frustrated S=1/2 chain using the method of continuous unitary transformations (CUTs). The transformation to an effective triplon model is realized in a perturbative fashion up to high orders about the limit of isolated dimers. An efficient description in terms of triplons (elementary triplets) is possible: a detailed analysis of the spectral densities is provided for strong and intermediate dimerization including the influence of frustration. Precise predictions are made for inelastic neutron scattering experiments probing the S=1 sector and for optical experiments (Raman scattering, infrared absorption) probing the S=0 sector. Bound states and resonances influence the important continua strongly. The comparison with the field theoretic results reveals that the sine-Gordon model describes the low-energy features for strong to intermediate dimerization only at critical frustration.

High Energy Dynamics of the Single Impurity Anderson Model

The quantitative control of the dynamic correlations of single impurity Anderson models is essential in several very active fields. We analyze the one-particle Green function with a constant energy resolution by dynamic density-matrix renormalization. In contrast to other approaches, sharp dominant resonances at high energies are found. Their origin and importance are discussed.

High Order Perturbation Theory for Spectral Densities of Multi-Particle Excitations: S=1/2 Two-Leg Heisenberg Ladder

We present a high order perturbation approach to quantitatively calculate spectral densities in three distinct steps starting from the model Hamiltonian and the observables of interest. The approach is based on the perturbative continuous unitary transformation introduced previously. It is conceived to work particularly well in models allowing a clear identification of the elementary excitations above the ground state. These are then viewed as quasi-particles above the vacuum. The article focuses on the technical aspects and includes a discussion of series extrapolation schemes. The strength of the method is demonstrated for S=1/2 two-leg Heisenberg ladders, for which results are presented.

Excitations in one-dimensional S=1/2 quantum antiferromagnets

The transition from dimerized to uniform phases is studied in terms of spectral weights for spin chains using continuous unitary transformations (CUTs). The spectral weights in the S=1 channel are computed perturbatively around the limit of strong dimerization. We find that the spectral weight is concentrated mainly in the subspaces with a small number of elementary triplets (triplons), even for vanishing dimerization. So, besides spinons, triplons may be used as elementary excitations in spin chains. We conclude that there is no necessity to use fractional excitations in low-dimensional, undoped or doped quantum antiferromagnets.
