Renormalization by Continuous Unitary Transformations: One-Dimensional Spinless Fermions

A renormalization scheme for interacting fermionic systems is presented where the renormalization is carried out in terms of the fermionic degrees of freedom. The scheme is based on continuous unitary transformations of the hamiltonian which stays hermitian throughout the renormalization flow, whereby any frequency dependence is avoided. The approach is illustrated in detail for a model of spinless fermions with nearest neighbour repulsion in one dimension. Even though the fermionic degrees of freedom do not provide an easy starting point in one dimension very good results are obtained which agree well with the exact findings based on Bethe ansatz.

Landau's quasi-particle mapping: Fermi liquid approach and Luttinger liquid behavior

A continuous unitary transformation is introduced which realizes Landau's mapping of the elementary excitations (quasi-particles) of an interacting Fermi liquid system to those of the system without interaction. The conservation of the number of quasi-particles is important. The transformation is performed numerically for a one-dimensional system, i.e. the worst case for a Fermi liquid approach. Yet evidence for Luttinger liquid behavior is found. Such an approach may open a route to a unified description of Fermi and Luttinger liquids on all energy scales.

Spin-Phonon Chains with Bond Coupling

We investigate the antiadiabatic limit of an antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to Einstein phonons via a bond coupling. The flow equation method is used to decouple the spin and the phonon part of the Hamiltonian. In the effective spin model longer range spin-spin interactions are generated. The effective spin chain is frustrated. The resulting temperature dependent couplings are used to determine the magnetic susceptibility and to determine the phase transition from a gapless state to a dimerized gapped phase. The susceptibilities and the phase diagram obtained via the effective couplings are compared with independently calculated quantum Monte Carlo results.

Effective Spin Models for Spin-Phonon Chains by Flow Equations

We investigate the anti-adiabatic limit of an anti-ferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg chain coupled to Einstein phonons. The flow equation method is used to decouple the spin and the phonon part of the Hamiltonian. In the effective spin model long range spin-spin interactions are generated. We determine the phase transition from a gapless state to a gapped (dimerised) phase, which occurs at a non-zero value of the spin-phonon coupling. In the effective phonon sector a phonon hardening is observed.

Multi-particle excitations and spectral densities in quantum spin-systems

The excitation spectrum of the 2-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg ladder is examined perturbatively. Using an optimally chosen continuous unitary transformation we expand the Hamiltonian and the Raman operator about the limit of isolated rungs leading to high order series expansions allowing to calculate spectral densities quantitatively. The 2-particle sector is examined for total momentum k=0. We show that triplet-triplet interaction gives rise to a band splitting.

Raman Response in Antiferromagnetic Two-Leg S=1/2 Heisenberg Ladders

The Raman response in the antiferromagnetic 2-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg ladder is calculated for various couplings by continuous unitary transformations. For leg couplings above 80% of the rung coupling a characteristic 2-peak structure occurs with a point of zero intensity within the continuum. Experimental data for CaV_2O_5 and La_yCa_(14-y)Cu_24O_41 are analyzed and the coupling constants are determined. Evidence is found that the Heisenberg model is not sufficient to describe cuprate ladders. We argue that a cyclic exchange term is the appropriate extension.

Thermodynamic Properties of the Dimerised and Frustrated S=1/2 Chain

By high temperature series expansion, exact diagonalisation and temperature density-matrix renormalisation the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and the specific heat $C(T)$ of dimerised and frustrated $S=1/2$ chains are computed. All three methods yield reliable results, in particular for not too small temperatures or not too small gaps. The series expansion results are provided in the form of polynomials allowing very fast and convenient fits in data analysis using algebraic programmes. We discuss the difficulty to extract more than two coupling constants from the temperature dependence of $χ(T)$.

Exact Demonstration of Magnetization Pleateaus and First Order Dimer-Néel Phase Transitions in a Modified Shastry-Sutherland Model for SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$

We study a generalized Shastry-Sutherland model for the material SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. Along a line in the parameter space, we can show rigorously that the model has a first order phase transition between Dimerized and Néel-ordered ground states. Furthermore, when a magnetic field is applied in the Dimerized phase, magnetization plateaus develop at commensurate values of the magnetization. We also discuss various aspects of the phase diagram and properties of this model away from this exactly soluble line, which include gap-closing continuous transitions between Dimerized and magnetically ordered phases.

Ordered phases in spin-Peierls systems

The microscopic description of spin-Peierls substances is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the ordered (dimerised and incommensurably modulated) phases. Important points are the adiabatic and the antiadiabatic approach, generic soliton forms, elastic and magnetic interchain couplings. The wealth and the accuracy of experimental information collected for the first inorganic spin-Peierls substance CuGeO_3 motivates this work.

Magnetic excitation spectrum of dimerized antiferromagnetic chains

Motivated by recent measurements on CuGeO$_3$ the spectrum of magnetic excitations of an antiferromagnetic $S=\frac{1}{2}$ chain with alternating coupling strength is investigated. Wave vector dependent magnons and a continuum with square root behavior at the band edges are found. The spectral density of the continua is calculated. Spin rotation symmetry fixes the gap of the continuum to be twice the elementary magnon gap. This is in excellent agreement with experimental results. In addition, the existence of bound states of two magnons is predicted: below the continuum a singlet and a triplet, above the continuum an ``anti-bound'' quintuplet. The results are based on field theoretic arguments, RPA calculations, and consideration of the limit of strong alternation.
