Neural-network-based material identification in photon-counting computed tomography using region-of-interest spectral features

This work investigates the feasibility of neural-network-based material identification based on photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT) data. The input data were spectral vectors extracted from regions of interest (ROIs) in reconstructed tomographic slices of a phantom containing La-, Nd-, and Gd-based samples, as well as air, water, bone, and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The original tomographic slices were acquired at 12 detector threshold settings (THL = 45, 55, 65, 75, 85, 95, 105, 115, 125, 135, 145, 165). For model training, the spectra were interpolated onto a uniform grid from THL 45 to THL 165 with a step of one THL unit. Large ROIs, small ROIs, and their combined dataset were considered. To avoid an overestimated performance caused by correlated ROIs extracted from the same tomographic slice, the data were split into training, validation, and test subsets at the slice level.

Study of $\bar{K}^*(892)^0 \eta$ and $K_S^0 a_0(980)^0$ in the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0}\pi^0\eta$ decay

We perform an amplitude analysis of the decay $D^0 \to K_S^0 \pi^0 \eta$ and measure its absolute branching fraction to be $(1.016 \pm 0.013_{\text {stat.}} \pm 0.014_{\text {syst.}})\%$. The analysis utilizes $20.3~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773~GeV with the BESIII detector. The branching fraction of the intermediate process $D^0 \rightarrow \bar{K}^*(892)^0 \eta$ is determined to be $(0.73 \pm 0.05_{\text {stat.}} \pm 0.03_{\text {syst.}}) \%$, which is $5 \sigma$ smaller than the result measured in $D^0 \to K^- \pi^+ \eta$ by the Belle experiment. As a result, the magnitudes of the $W$-exchange and QCD-penguin exchange amplitudes are found to be less than half of their current estimations. Furthermore, we determine $\mathcal{B}(D^0\to K_S^0a_0(980)^0, a_0(980)^0\to \pi^0\eta) = (9.88\pm 0.37_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.42_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-3}$, with a precision improved by a factor of 4.5 compared to the world average.

Evidence for the semileptonic decays $\Lambda_c^{+} \to \Sigma^{\pm} \pi^{\mp} e^+ \nu_e$

Using $4.5\, fb^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies between $4.600$ and $4.699\,GeV$, we search for the semileptonic decays $\Lambda_c^{+} \to \Sigma^{+} \pi^{-} e^+ \nu_e$ and $\Lambda_c^{+} \to \Sigma^{-} \pi^{+} e^+ \nu_e$ for the first time. Assuming their branching fractions are equal under isospin symmetry, evidence for $\Lambda_c^{+} \to \Sigma^{\pm} \pi^{\mp} e^+ \nu_e$ is reported with a significance of $3.6\sigma$. The corresponding branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_c^{+} \to \Sigma^\pm\pi^\mp e^+\nu_e) = (7.7^{+2.5}_{-2.3_{\rm stat.}}\pm1.3_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-4}$, which is consistent with quark model predictions within two standard deviations.

The hyperon weak radiative decay $\Xi^0\to\gamma\Sigma^0$ is measured via the process $J/\psi\to\Xi^0\bar\Xi^0$. The absolute branching fraction of $\Xi^0\to\gamma\Sigma^0$ is determined to be $(3.69\pm 0.21_{\text{stat}}\pm0.12_{\text{syst}})\times 10^{-3}$, based on $(10.087\pm 0.044)\times 10^{9}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The decay asymmetry parameter is measured, with a complete angular analysis of the cascade decay chain, to be $\alpha_{\gamma} = -0.807\pm 0.095_{\text{stat}}\pm 0.011_{\text{syst}}$.

Measurement of the Born cross section for $e^+e^- \to p K^- K^- \bar{\Xi}^+$ at $\sqrt{s} =$ 3.5-4.9 GeV

Using $e^+ e^-$ collision data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 20 ${\rm fb}^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, we present a measurement of the Born cross section for the process $e^+e^- \to p K^-K^-\bar{\Xi}^{+}$ at 39 center-of-mass energies between 3.5 and 4.9 GeV with a partial reconstruction technique. By performing a fit to the dressed cross section of $e^{+}e^{-}\to p K^- K^-\bar{\Xi}^{+}$ with a power law function for continuum production and one resonance at a time for the $\psi(3770)$, $\psi(4040)$, $\psi(4160)$, $\psi(4230)$, $\psi(4360)$, $\psi(4415)$ or $\psi(4660)$, respectively, the upper limits for the product of partial electronic width and branching fraction into the final state $p K^- K^- \bar{\Xi}^+$ for these resonances are determined at the $90\%$ confidence level.

Measurement of Born Cross Sections and Effective Form Factors of $e^+e^-\to \Omega^{-}\bar{\Omega}^{+}$ from$\sqrt{s}$ = 3.7 to 4.7 GeV

Using $e^+e^-$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb$^{-1}$, collected at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.7 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the energy-dependent Born cross sections of $e^+e^-\to \Omega^{-}\bar{\Omega}^+$ and the effective form factors of the $\Omega^-$ baryon. The analysis employs a single baryon tagging method, and the results are consistent with theoretical predictions, providing critical constraints on the electromagnetic structure of the $\Omega^-$ hyperon. No significant signal of charmonium or charmonium-like states decaying to $\Omega^{-}\bar{\Omega}^+$ is observed in the investigated energy range.

Search for sub-GeV invisible particles in inclusive decays of $J/\psi$ to $\phi$

A search for an invisible particle, $X$, with a mass between 0 and 0.96 $\textrm{GeV}/\textit{c}^{2}$, is performed in the process $J/\psi\rightarrow\phi + X$ using $(8774.0\pm39.4)\times10^{6}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector from 2017 to 2019. The $\phi$ meson is fully reconstructed and an efficient veto of photons, neutral and charged hadrons up to twice the $K_L^0$ mass is applied to the rest of the event and the recoil mass against the $\phi$ is obtained precisely from the kinematic constraint in the event. No significant signal over the expected background is observed in the investigated region and the upper limit on the inclusive branching fraction of $J/\psi\rightarrow\phi + X$ is determined to be $7.0\times10^{-8}$ at 90\% confidence level. Upper limits at a 90\% confidence level are also given for this branching fraction as a function of the invisible particle mass, varying from $4\times10^{-9}$ to $4\times10^{-8}$ over the investigated mass range. Additionally, a 90\% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction of $\eta\rightarrow \rm{invisible}$ is determined to $2.4\times10^{-5}$, which improves the previous best results by more than four times. The analysis technique in this work offers a clean window to search for sub-GeV invisible particles, which can be adapted for other $J/\psi$ decays and direct $e^+e^-$ annihilation experiments in future studies, and improve the sensitivity by orders of magnitude.

Search for the charmonium weak decays $J/\psi\to D_{s}^{-}\rho^{+}+c.c.$ and $J/\psi\to D_{s}^{-}\pi^{+}+c.c.$

Based on $(10087\pm44)\times 10^6$ $J/\psi$ events recorded with the BESIII detector, we search for the rare charmonium weak decays $J/\psi\to D_{s}^{-}\rho^{+}+c.c.$ and $J/\psi\to D_{s}^{-}\pi^{+}+c.c.$ No signal is observed, and upper limits on the branching fractions at the $90\%$ confidence level are set as $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to D_{s}^{-}\rho^{+}+c.c.)<8.0\times10^{-7}$ and $\mathcal{B}(J/\psi\to D_{s}^{-}\pi^{+}+c.c.)<4.1\times10^{-7}$. Our results provide the most stringent experimental constraints on these decays.

Measurement of the $\eta$ transition form factor through $\eta' \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-\eta$ decay

Based on a sample of $(1.0087\pm0.0044)\times10^{10}$ $J/\psi$ events collected at BESIII, the transition form factor of the $\eta$ meson is extracted by analyzing $J/\psi\to\gamma\eta',~\eta'\to\pi^+\pi^-\eta,~\eta\to\gamma l^+l^-$ ($l$=$e$, $\mu$) events. The measured slope of the transition form factor is $\Lambda^{-2}=1.645\pm0.093_{\rm stat.}\pm {0.024_{\rm sys.}}$ (GeV/$c^2$)$^{-2}$ for the di-electron channel and $\Lambda^{-2}=1.645\pm0.343_{\rm stat.}\pm0.017_{\rm sys.}$ (GeV/$c^2$)$^{-2}$ for the di-muon channel. The branching fractions for $\eta\rightarrow\gamma e^+e^-$ and $\eta\rightarrow\gamma\mu^+\mu^-$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(\eta\to\gamma e^+e^-)=(6.79\pm0.04_{\rm stat.}\pm0.36_{\rm sys.})\times 10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\eta\to\gamma\mu^+\mu^-)=(2.97\pm0.11_{\rm stat.}\pm0.07_{\rm sys.})\times 10^{-4}$. By combining with the results based on the $J/\psi\to\gamma\eta,~\eta\to\gamma e^+e^-$ events from the previous BESIII measurement, we determine $\Lambda^{-2}=1.707\pm0.076_{\rm stat.}\pm0.029_{\rm sys.}$ (GeV/$c^2$)$^{-2}$ and $\mathcal{B}(\eta\to\gamma e^+e^-)=(6.93\pm0.28_{\rm tot.})\times 10^{-3}$. In addition, we search for the dark photon ($A'$) using the combined events. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limits on $\mathcal{B}(\eta\to\gamma A',~A'\to e^+e^-)$ are set at 90\% confidence level for different $A'$ mass hypotheses.

Study of $f_1(1420)$ and $\eta(1405)$ in the decay $J/\psi \to \gamma \pi^{0}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$

A partial-wave analysis is performed on the decay $J/\psi\to\gamma\pi^{0}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ within the $\pi^{0}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$ invariant-mass region below 1.6 GeV$/c^{2}$, using $(10.09~\pm~0.04)\times10^{9} ~J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. Significant isospin-violating decays of $\eta(1405)$ and $f_1(1420)$ into $f_0(980)\pi^{0}$ are observed. For the first time, three axial-vectors, $f_1(1285)$, $f_1(1420)$ and $f_1(1510)$, are observed to decay into $\pi^{0}\pi^{0}\pi^{0}$. The product branching fractions of these resonances are reported.

Improved Measurements of $D^+ \to \eta e^+\nu_e$ and $D^+ \to \eta \mu^+\nu_\mu$

Using 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $e^+e^-$ collision data collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the branching fractions of $D^+\to \eta e^+\nu_e$ and $D^+\to \eta\mu^+\nu_\mu$ to be $(9.75\pm0.29\pm0.28)\times10^{-4}$ and $(9.08\pm0.35\pm0.23)\times10^{-4}$, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. From a simultaneous fit to their partial decay rates, we determine the product of the hadronic form factor $f^\eta_+(0)$ and the modulus of the $c\to d$ Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cd}|$ to be $f^\eta_+(0)|V_{cd}|=0.078\pm0.002\pm0.001$. Taking the $|V_{cd}|$ value from the Standard Model global fit as input, we obtain $f^\eta_+(0)=0.345\pm0.008\pm0.003$. The ratio between the measured branching fractions of $D^+\to\eta^+\mu^+\nu_{\mu}$ and $D^+\to\eta e^+\nu_e$, is determined to be $0.93\pm0.05_{\rm stat.}\pm0.02_{\rm syst.}$, indicating no violation of lepton flavor universality.

Measurement of the branching fractions of the Cabibbo-favored decays $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to\Lambda K_{S}^{0}K^{+}$ and $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to\Xi^{0}K_{S}^{0}\pi^{+}$ and search for $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to\Sigma^{0} K_{S}^{0}K^{+}$

Based on $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 4.5 fb$^{-1}$ collected at center-of-mass energies between 4599.53 MeV and 4698.82 MeV with the BESIII detector, the absolute branching fraction of the Cabibbo-favored decay $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to\Lambda K_{S}^{0}K^{+}$ is measured to be $(3.12\pm0.46\pm0.15)\times10^{-3}$. Combined with a previous measurement from the BESIII Collaboration, the branching fraction of the decay $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to\Lambda K_{S}^{0}K^{+}$ is calculated to be $(3.07\pm0.26\pm0.13)\times10^{-3}$. The decay $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to\Xi^{0}K_{S}^{0}\pi^{+}$ is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of $6.6\sigma$, and its branching fraction is determined to be $(3.70\pm0.60\pm0.21)\times10^{-3}$. In addition, a search for the decay $\Lambda_{c}^{+}\to\Sigma^{0} K_{S}^{0}K^{+}$ is performed and its branching fraction is determined to be $(0.80^{+0.28}_{-0.24}\pm0.16)\times10^{-3}$, corresponding to an upper limit of $1.28\times10^{-3}$ at $90\%$ confidence level. These measurements provide new information that can be used to distinguish between theoretical models.

First measurement of $\Sigma^{+}n\rightarrow\Lambda p$ and $\Sigma^{+}n\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}p$ cross sections via $\Sigma^+$-nucleus scattering at an electron-positron collider

Using $(1.0087\pm0.0044)\times10^{10}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring, the reactions $\Sigma^{+}n\rightarrow\Lambda p$ and $\Sigma^{+}n\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}p$ are studied, where the $\Sigma^{+}$ baryon is produced in the process $J/\psi\rightarrow\Sigma^{+}\bar{\Sigma}^-$ and the neutron is a component of the $^9\rm{Be}$, $^{12}\rm{C}$ and $^{197}\rm{Au}$ nuclei in the beam pipe. Clear signals of these two reactions are observed for the first time. Their cross sections are measured to be $\sigma(\Sigma^{+}+{^9\rm{Be}}\rightarrow\Lambda+p+X)=(45.2\pm12.1_{\rm{stat}}\pm7.2_{\rm{sys}})$ mb and $\sigma(\Sigma^{+}+{^9\rm{Be}}\rightarrow\Sigma^{0}+p+X)=(29.8\pm9.7_{\rm{stat}}\pm6.9_{\rm{sys}})$ mb for a $\Sigma^{+}$ average momentum of $0.992$ GeV/$c$, within a range of $\pm0.015$ GeV/$c$, where $X$ represents the residual nucleus. This is the first study of $\Sigma^{+}$-nucleon scattering at an electron-positron collider.

The branching fraction ratio of $\Lambda_{c}^+ \rightarrow \Sigma^+ \eta$ relative to $\Lambda_{c}^+ \rightarrow \Sigma^+ \pi^0$ is determined to be $0.305 \pm 0.046_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.007_{\rm syst.}$, and that of $\Lambda_{c}^+ \rightarrow \Sigma^+ \eta'$ relative to $\Lambda_{c}^+ \rightarrow \Sigma^+ \omega $ is $0.336 \pm 0.094_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.037_{\rm syst.}$. The ratio of $\frac{\mathcal{B}\left(\Lambda_{c}^{+} \rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \eta'\right)}{\mathcal{B}\left(\Lambda_{c}^{+} \rightarrow \Sigma^{+} \eta\right)} $ is determined to be $1.73 \pm 0.22_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.16_{\rm syst.}$. Test of local realism via entangled $\Lambda\bar\Lambda$ system

The non-locality of quantum correlations is a fundamental feature of quantum theory. The Bell inequality serves as a benchmark for distinguishing between predictions made by quantum theory and local hidden variable theory (LHVT). Recent advancements in photon-entanglement experiments have addressed potential loopholes and have observed significant violations of variants of Bell inequality. However, examples of Bell inequalities violation in high energy physics are scarce. In this study, we utilize $(10.087\pm0.044)\times10^{9}$ $J/\psi$ events collected with the BES-III detector at the BEPCII collider, performing non-local correlation tests using the entangled hyperon pairs. The massive-entangled $\Lambda\bar\Lambda$ systems are formed and decay through strong and weak interactions, respectively. Through measurements of the angular distribution of $p\bar{p}$ in $J/\psi\to \gamma\eta_c$ and subsequent $\eta_c\to\Lambda(p\pi^-)\bar\Lambda(\bar{p}\pi^{+})$ cascade decays, a significant violation of LHVT predictions is observed. The exclusion of LHVT is found to be statistically significant at a level exceeding $5.2\sigma$ in the testing of three Bell-like inequalities.

Partial Wave Analysis of $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}J/\psi$ and Cross Section Measurement of $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \pi^{\pm}Z_{c}(3900)^{\mp}$ from 4.1271 to 4.3583 GeV

Based on 12.0 $\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ of $e^{+}e^{-}$ collision data samples collected by the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies from 4.1271 to 4.3583 GeV, a partial wave analysis is performed for the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}J/\psi$. The cross sections for the sub processes ${e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow\pi^{+}Z_{c}(3900)^{-}+c.c.\rightarrow\pi^{+}\pi^{-}J/\psi}$, $f_{0}(980)(\rightarrow\pi^{+}\pi^{-})J/\psi$, and $(\pi^{+}\pi^{-})_{\rm{S\mbox{-}wave}} J/\psi$ are measured for the first time. The mass and width of the $Z_{c}(3900)^{\pm}$ are determined to be $3884.6\pm0.7\pm3.3$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $37.2\pm1.3\pm6.6$ MeV, respectively. The first errors are statistical and the second systematic. The final state $(\pi^{+}\pi^{-})_{\rm{S\mbox{-}wave}} J/\psi$ dominates the process $e^{+}e^{-} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}J/\psi$. By analyzing the cross sections of $\pi^{\pm}Z_{c}(3900)^{\mp}$ and $f_{0}(980)J/\psi$, $Y(4220)$ has been observed. Its mass and width are determined to be $4225.7\pm4.1\pm3.4$ MeV/$c^{2}$ and $57.5\pm9.4\pm12.1$ MeV, respectively.

The statistical significances for $\chi_{cJ}$ signals are all larger than 5$\sigma$. The branching fractions of $\chi_{c0,1,2}\to p\bar{p} \eta\eta$ are determined to be $({5.75 \pm 0.59 \pm 0.42}) \times 10^{-5}$, $({1.40 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.17}) \times 10^{-5}$, and $({2.64 \pm 0.40 \pm 0.27}) \times 10^{-5}$, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.
