Two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states and helicity analysis for $χ_{c2}\arγγ$}

Based on a data sample of 106 M $ψ^{\prime}$ events collected with the BESIII detector, the decays $ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0, 2}$,$χ_{c0, 2}\arγγ$ are studied to determine the two-photon widths of the $χ_{c0, 2}$ states. The two-photon decay branching fractions are determined to be ${\cal B}(χ_{c0}\arγγ) = (2.24\pm 0.19\pm 0.12\pm 0.08)\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(χ_{c2}\arγγ) = (3.21\pm 0.18\pm 0.17\pm 0.13)\times 10^{-4}$. From these, the two-photon widths are determined to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = (2.33\pm0.20\pm0.13\pm0.17)$ keV, $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.63\pm0.04\pm0.04\pm0.04)$ keV, and $\cal R$ $=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})=0.271\pm 0.029\pm 0.013\pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and those from the PDG ${\cal B}(ψ^{\prime}\arγχ_{c0,2})$ and $Γ(χ_{c0,2})$ errors, respectively. The ratio of the two-photon widths for helicity $λ=0$ and helicity $λ=2$ components in the decay $χ_{c2}\arγγ$ is measured for the first time to be $f_{0/2} =Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.00\pm0.02\pm0.02$.

Wave modelling in a cylindrical non-uniform helicon discharge

A radio frequency (RF) field solver based on Maxwell's equations and a cold plasma dielectric tensor is em- ployed to describe wave phenomena observed in a cylindrical non-uniform helicon discharge. The experiment is carried out on a recently built linear plasma-material interaction machine: the MAGnetized Plasma In- teraction Experiment (MAGPIE) [B. D. Blackwell, J. F. Caneses, C. Samuell, J. Wach, J. Howard, and C. S. Corr, submitted on 25 March 2012 to Plasma Sources Science and Technology], in which both plasma density and static magnetic field are functions of axial position. The field strength increases by a factor of 15 from source to target plate, and plasma density and electron temperature are radially non-uniform. With an enhancement factor of 9.5 to the electron-ion Coulomb collision frequency, 12% reduction in the antenna radius, and the same other conditions as employed in the experiment, the solver produces axial and radial profiles of wave amplitude and phase that are consistent with measurements. Ion-acoustic turbulence, which can happen if electron drift velocity exceeds the speed of sound in magnetized plasmas, may account for the factor of 9.5 used to match simulated results with experimental data. To overcome the single m vacuum solu- tion limitations of the RF solver, which can only compute the glass response to the same mode number of the antenna, we have adjusted the antenna radius to match the wave field strength in the plasma.(not finished because of the limited number of characters, please see the full paper)

Competition between commensurate and incommensurate magnetic ordering in Fe(1+y)Te

The Fe1+y Te1-x Sex compounds belong to the family of iron-based high temperature superconductors, in which superconductivity often appears upon doping antiferromagnetic parent compounds. Unlike other Fe-based superconductors (in which the antiferromagnetic order is at the Fermi surface nesting wavevector [1/2,1/2,1]), the Fe1+y Te1-x Sex parent compound Fe1+y Te orders at a different wavevector, [1/2, 0, 1/2]. Furthermore, the ordering wavevector depends on y, the occupation of interstitial sites with excess iron; the origin of this behavior is controversial. Using inelastic neutron scattering on Fe1.08 Te, we find incommensurate magnetic fluctuations above the Neel temperature, even though the ordered state is bicollinear and commensurate with gapped spin waves. This behavior can be understood in terms of a competition between commensurate and incommensurate order, which we explain as a lock-in transition caused by the magnetic anisotropy.

First observation of $η(1405)$ decays into $f_{0}(980)π^0$

The decays $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^+π^-π^0$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow γπ^0π^0π^0$ are analyzed using a sample of 225 million $\jpsi$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The decay of $η(1405)\ar f_{0}(980)π^0$ with a large isospin violation is observed for the first time. The width of the $f_{0}(980)$ observed in the dipion mass spectra is anomalously narrower than the world average. Decay rates for three-pion decays of the $η'$ are also measured precisely.

Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in muon+tau final states

We present a search for the pair production of scalar top quarks ($\tilde{t}_{1}$), the lightest supersymmetric partners of the top quarks, in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of {7.3 $fb^{-1}$} collected with the \dzero experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Each scalar top quark is assumed to decay into a $b$ quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino ($\tildeν$). We investigate final states arising from $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}μτ\tildeν \tildeν$ and $\tilde{t}_{1} \bar{\tilde{t}_{1}} \rightarrow b\bar{b}ττ\tildeν \tildeν$. With no significant excess of events observed above the background expected from the standard model, we set exclusion limits on this production process in the ($m_{\tilde{t}_{1}}$,$m_{\tildeν}$) plane.

Precision measurement of the branching fractions of J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 and psi' -> pi+pi-pi0

We study the decays of the J/psi and psi' mesons to pi+pi-pi0 using data samples at both resonances collected with the BES III detector in 2009. We measure the corresponding branching fractions with unprecedented precision and provide mass spectra and Dalitz plots. The branching fraction for J/psi -> pi+pi-pi0 is determined to be (2.137 +- 0.004 (stat.) +0.058-0.056 (syst.) +0.027-0.026 (norm.))*10-2, and the branching fraction for psi' -> pi+pi-pi0 is measured as (2.14 +- 0.03 (stat.) +0.08-0.07 (syst.) +0.09-0.08 (norm.))*10-4. The J/psi decay is found to be dominated by an intermediate rho(770) state, whereas the psi' decay is dominated by di-pion masses around 2.2 GeV/c2, leading to strikingly different Dalitz distributions.

Experimental Determination of the Lorenz Number in Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 and Bi0.88Sb0.12

Nanostructuring has been shown to be an effective approach to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity and improve the thermoelectric figure of merit. Because the experimentally measured thermal conductivity includes contributions from both carriers and phonons, separating out the phonon contribution has been difficult and is mostly based on estimating the electronic contributions using the Wiedemann-Franz law. In this paper, an experimental method to directly measure electronic contributions to the thermal conductivity is presented and applied to Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3, [Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3]0.98Ni0.02, and Bi0.88Sb0.12. By measuring the thermal conductivity under magnetic field, electronic contributions to thermal conductivity can be extracted, leading to knowledge of the Lorenz number in thermoelectric materials.

Utility of the inverse partial fluorescence for electronic structure studies of battery materials

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is one of the most widely used experimental techniques to study the electronic and spatial structure of materials. Fluorescence yield mode is bulk-sensitive, but has several serious problems coming from saturation effects. In this study, we show the usefulness of partial fluorescence yields in addressing these problems. We discuss the different behaviors of La2NiMnO6 and LiMnO2 at the Mn 2p absorption edges. The total fluorescence yield produces misleading spectra for LiMnO2 due to the absence of high-Z (Z: atomic number) elements. We conclude that the measurement of the inverse partial fluorescence yield is essential in studies of LiMnO2, which is a hotly debated Li-ion battery material.

Precise measurement of the top quark mass in the dilepton channel at D0

We measure the top quark mass (mt) in ppbar collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV using dilepton ttbar->W+bW-bbar->l+nubl-nubarbbar events, where l denotes an electron, a muon, or a tau that decays leptonically. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1 collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We obtain mt = 174.0 +- 1.8(stat) +- 2.4(syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the current world average mt = 173.3 +- 1.1 GeV. This is currently the most precise measurement of mt in the dilepton channel.

Fourfold Symmetry of Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Epitaxial Fe3O4 Thin Films

We studied the angular dependence of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and Planar Hall effect (PHE) at various temperatures in high quality epitaxial Fe3O4 films grown on MgO(001) substrates. The PHE contains only a twofold angular dependence, but the AMR below 200K is constituted with both twofold and fourfold symmetric terms. A quantitative fitting based on a phenomenological model indicates the nonmonotonics temperature dependence of the twofold component of AMR can be ascribed to the competition between the term and the term. A unidirectional component was observed in the angular dependent AMR. The fourfold symmetric AMR also existed for the magnetic field rotating in the plane perpendicular to the current. Our results indicate the AMR and PHE in single crystalline films have different origins, and also prove that the origin of the four-fold symmetry of AMR is related to the lattice symmetry rather than the spin scattering near the antiphase boundaries.

Search for pair production of the scalar top quark in the electron-muon final state

We report the result of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark ($\tilde{t}_1$) in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$. The scalar top quarks are assumed to decay into a $b$ quark, a charged lepton, and a scalar neutrino ($\tildeν$), and the search is performed in the electron plus muon final state. No significant excess of events above the standard model prediction is detected, and improved exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. are set in the the ($M_{\tilde{t}_1}$,$M_{\tildeν}$) mass plane.

Determination of the width of the top quark

We extract the total width of the top quark, Gamma_t, from the partial decay width Gamma(t -> W b) measured using the t-channel cross section for single top quark production and from the branching fraction B(t -> W b) measured in ttbar events using up to 2.3 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron ppbar Collider. The result is Gamma_t = 1.99 +0.69 -0.55 GeV, which translates to a top-quark lifetime of tau_t = (3.3 +1.3 -0.9) x 10^-25 s. Assuming a high mass fourth generation b' quark and unitarity of the four-generation quark-mixing matrix, we set the first upper limit on |Vtb'| < 0.63 at 95% C.L.

Valence evaluation of LiMnO2 and related battery materials by x-ray absorption spectroscopy

We present an x-ray absorption study of the oxidation states of transition-metal-ions of LiMnO2 and its related materials, widely used as cathodes in Li-ion batteries. The comparison between the obtained spectrum and the configuration-interaction cluster-model calculations showed that the Mn3+ in LiMnO2 is a mixture of the high-spin and low-spin states. We found that Li deficiencies occur in the case of Cr substitution, whereas there are no Li deficiencies in the case of Ni substitution. We conclude that the substitution of charge-transfer-type Ni or Cu is effective for LiMnO2 battery materials.

Motion Segmentation by SCC on the Hopkins 155 Database

We apply the Spectral Curvature Clustering (SCC) algorithm to a benchmark database of 155 motion sequences, and show that it outperforms all other state-of-the-art methods. The average misclassification rate by SCC is 1.41% for sequences having two motions and 4.85% for three motions.

Kernel Spectral Curvature Clustering (KSCC)

Multi-manifold modeling is increasingly used in segmentation and data representation tasks in computer vision and related fields. While the general problem, modeling data by mixtures of manifolds, is very challenging, several approaches exist for modeling data by mixtures of affine subspaces (which is often referred to as hybrid linear modeling). We translate some important instances of multi-manifold modeling to hybrid linear modeling in embedded spaces, without explicitly performing the embedding but applying the kernel trick. The resulting algorithm, Kernel Spectral Curvature Clustering, uses kernels at two levels - both as an implicit embedding method to linearize nonflat manifolds and as a principled method to convert a multiway affinity problem into a spectral clustering one. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method by comparing it with other state-of-the-art methods on both synthetic data and a real-world problem of segmenting multiple motions from two perspective camera views.

Heavy fermion behavior in PrRh2B2C: Excitonic mass enhancement

We report magnetic and transport properties of a new quaternary borocarbide PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C, based on magnetisation, resistivity and specific heat studies. This compound forms in LuNi$_{2}$B$_{2}$C-type tetragonal structure (space group {\it I4/mmm}) and does not exhibit magnetic ordering or superconductivity down to 0.5 K. The crystal field analysis of specific heat data suggests a singlet ground state in this compound. The high value of the Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ$ $\approx$ 250 mJ/mole K$^{2}$, together with a singlet ground state suggests that the heavy fermion behaviour in PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C results from the interaction of the conduction electrons with the low lying crystal field excitations. No signature of magnetic ordering or superconductivity is observed in PrRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$C under the application of pressure up to 23 kbar.

The Modification of the Oppenheimer and Snyder Collapsing Dust Ball to a Static Ball in Discrete Space-time

Besides the singularity problem, the famous Oppenheimer and Snyder solution is discovered to be of deficiency in two aspects: the internal Friedmann space-time does not have the inherent symmetry and cannot connect to the external Schwarzschild space-time. So the process of gravitational collapse described by this solution is doubtful. The deficiency, together with the singularity problem, result from the imperfection of the field theory in continuous space-time, which is expressed by the infinite precision function theory. The space-time structure of the Oppenheimer and Snyder dust ball is founded to be discrete rather than continuous, and to describe the field theory in discrete space-time it requires a function theory with finite precision. Based on the i order real number and its equivalence class, which is defined in the real number field, the infinite precision function theory is extended to the finite precision function theory. The Einstein field equations are expressed in the form of finite precision, and then the collapsing dust ball solution in continuous space-time is modified to a static ball solution in discrete space-time. It solves all the problems of Oppenheimer and Snyder solution and shows that, with Planck length and Planck time as space-time quantum, a mechanism to resist the gravitational collapse could be obtained by the discretization of space-time.

Intermediate Phase in Germanium-Selenide glasses: A Theoretical and Experimental Study

A theoretical and experimental study of the Intermediate Phase (IP) in GexSe1-x is presented. Based on ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) models of these glasses, a generic atomic picture of the IP is discussed thoroughly. X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) measurements on Ge-Se glasses over a wide range including the IP window are presented to show the electronic signature of the IP in the form of the shift in the absorption edge with the Ge content. It is shown that MD based models clearly reproduce that shift.
