Electronic Signature of the Intermediate Phase in Ge_xSe_{1-x} Glasses: A Joint Theoretical and Experimental Study

Raman and calorimetric studies on Ge_xSe_{1-x} glasses have provided evidence for the existence of the intermediate phase (IP) in chalcogenide and other glasses. Here, we present X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) measurements on germanium selenide glasses in the IP composition range, and detect an electronic signature of the IP. Ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) based models of these glasses are discussed, and an atomistic picture of the IP, based upon the models and available experiments is presented. We show that these models reproduce detailed composition-dependent structure in the XANES measurements, and otherwise appear to properly represent the structure of the GeSe glasses near the IP.

Experimental Measurement of Multi-dimensional Entanglement via Equivalent Symmetric Projection

We construct a linear optics measurement process to determine the entanglement measure, named \emph{I-concurrence}, of a set of $4 \times 4$ dimensional two-photon entangled pure states produced in the optical parametric down conversion process. In our experiment, an \emph{equivalent} symmetric projection for the two-fold copy of single subsystem (presented by L. Aolita and F. Mintert, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{97}, 050501 (2006)) can be realized by observing the one-side two-photon coincidence without any triggering detection on the other subsystem. Here, for the first time, we realize the measurement for entanglement contained in bi-photon pure states by taking advantage of the indistinguishability and the bunching effect of photons. Our method can determine the \emph{I-concurrence} of generic high dimensional bipartite pure states produced in parametric down conversion process.

A Constraint Network Based Approach to Memory Layout Optimization

While loop restructuring based code optimization for array intensive applications has been successful in the past, it has several problems such as the requirement of checking dependences (legality issues) and transformation of all of the array references within the loop body indiscriminately (while some of the references can benefit from the transformation, others may not). As a result, data transformations, i.e., transformations that modify memory layout of array data instead of loop structure have been proposed. One of the problems associated with data transformations is the difficulty of selecting a memory layout for an array that is acceptable to the entire program (not just to a single loop). In this paper, we formulate the problem of determining the memory layouts of arrays as a constraint network, and explore several methods of solution in a systematic way. Our experiments provide strong support in favor of employing constraint processing, and point out future research directions.

Moving Beyond a Simple Model of Luminescence Rings in Quantum Well Structures

The dramatic appearance of luminescence rings with radius of several hundred microns in quantum well structures can be understood through a fairly simple nonlinear model of the diffusion and recombination of electrons and holes in a driven nonequilibrium system. The ring corresponds to the boundary between a positive hole gas and a negative electron gas in steady state. While this basic effect is now well understood, we discuss several other experimental results which can not be explained by this simple model.

Mathematical Models of Contemporary Elementary Quantum Computing Devices

Computations with a future quantum computer will be implemented through the operations by elementary quantum gates. It is now well known that the collection of 1-bit and 2-bit quantum gates are universal for quantum computation, i.e., any n-bit unitary operation can be carried out by concatenations of 1-bit and 2-bit elementary quantum gates. Three contemporary quantum devices--cavity QED, ion traps and quantum dots--have been widely regarded as perhaps the most promising candidates for the construction of elementary quantum gates. In this paper, we describe the physical properties of these devices, and show the mathematical derivations based on the interaction of the laser field as control with atoms, ions or electron spins, leading to the following: (i) the 1-bit unitary rotation gates; and (ii) the 2-bit quantum phase gates and the controlled-not gate. This paper is aimed at providing a sufficiently self-contained survey account of analytical nature for mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists to aid interdisciplinary understanding in the research of quantum computation.

Niobium based intermetallics as a source of high-current/high-magnetic field superconductors

The article is focused on low temperature intermetallic A15 superconducting wires development for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, NMR, and Nuclear Magnetic Imaging, MRI, magnets and also on cryogen-free magnets. There are many other applications which would benefit from new development such as future Large Hadron Collider to be built from A15 intermetallic conductors. This paper highlights the current status of development of the niobium based intermetallics with special attention to Nb 3 (Al 1-x, Ge x). Discussion is focused on the materials science aspects of conductor manufacture, such as b-phase (A15) formation, with particular emphasis on the maximisation of the superconducting parameters, such as critical current density, Jc, critical temperature, Tc, and upper critical field, Hc2 . Many successful manufacturing techniques of the potential niobium-aluminide intermetallic superconducting conductors, such as solid-state processing, liquid-solid processing, rapid heating/cooling processes, are described, compared and assessed. Special emphasis has been laid on conditions under which the Jc (B) peak effect occurs in some of the Nb3(Al,Ge) wires. A novel electrodeoxidizing method developed in Cambridge whereby the alloys and intermetallics are produced cheaply making all superconducting electromagnetic devices, using low cost LTCs, more cost effective is presented. This new technique has potential to revolutionise the existing superconducting industry enabling reduction of cost orders of magnitude.

Grover's Algorithm for Multiobject Search in Quantum Computing

L. K. Grover's search algorithm in quantum computing gives an optimal, square-root speedup in the search for a single object in a large unsorted database. In this paper, we expound Grover's algorithm in a Hilbert-space framework that isolates its geometrical essence, and we generalize it to the case where more than one object satisfies the search criterion.

Two-Dimensional Navier-Stokes Simulation of Breaking Waves

Numerical simulations describing plunging breakers including the splash-up phenomenon are presented. The motion is governed by the classical, incompressible, two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation. The numerical modelling of this two-phase flow is based on a piecewise linear version of the volume of fluid method. Preliminary results concerning the time evolution of the liquid-gas interface and the vorticity field are given for short waves, showing how an initial steep wave undergoes breaking and successive splash-up cycles.
