Gravity of Monopole and String and Gravitational Constant in 3He-A

We discuss the effective metric produced in superfluid 3He-A by such topological objects as radial disgyration and monopole. In relativistic theories these metrics are similar to that of the local string and global monopole correspondingly. But in 3He-A they have the negative angle deficit, which corresponds to the negative mass of the topological objects. The effective gravitational constant G in superfluid 3He-A, derived from the comparison with relativistic theories, is inversely proportional to the square of the gap amplitude Delta, which plays the part of the Planck energy cut-off. G depends on temperature and increases with T, which corresponds to the vacuum screening of the Newton's constant.

Vortex Mass in BCS systems: Kopnin and Baym-Chandler contributions

The Kopnin mass and the Baym-Chandler mass of the vortex have the same origin. Both represent the mass of the normal component trapped by the vortex. The Kopnin mass of the vortex is formed by quasiparticles localized in the vicinity of the vortex. In the superclean limit it is calculated as linear response exactly in the same way as the density of the normal component is calculated in homogeneous superfluid. The Baym-Chandler mass is the hydrodynamical (associated) mass trapped by vortex. It is analogous to the normal component formed by inhomogeneities, such as pores and impurities. Both contributions are calculated for the generic model of the continuous vortex core.

Flow instability in 3He-A as analog of generation of hypermagnetic field in early Universe

It is now well-recognized that the Universe may behave like a condensed matter system in which several phase transitions have taken place. Superconductors and the superfluid phases of 3He are condensed matter systems with useful similarities to the Universe: they both contain Bose fields (order parameter) and Fermions (quasiparticles) which interact in a way similar to the interaction of Higgs and gauge particles with fermions in particle physics. This analogy allows us to simulate many properties of the cosmologically relevant physical (particle physics) vacuum in condensed matter, while direct experiments in particle physics are still far from realization. Recently, the anomalous generation of momentum (called ``momentogenesis'') was experimentally confirmed in 3He: in the non-trivial background of a moving 3He vortex, quantum effects gave rise to the production of quasiparticles with momentum which were detected by measuring the force on the vortex. This phenomenon is based on the same physics as the anomalous generation of matter in particle physics and bears directly on the cosmological problem of why the Universe contains much more matter than antimatter (``baryogenesis''). Here we report the experimental observation of the effect opposite to momentogenesis: the conversion of quasiparticle momentum into a non-trivial order parameter configuration or ``texture''. The corresponding process in a cosmological setting would be the creation of a primordial magnetic field due to changes in the matter content.

Reply to Comment "Invalidity of classes of approximate Hall effect calculations."

We reply to the criticism raised by Ao in his Comment (cond-mat/9801180). Being unable to properly treat the Hall conductivity in a mixed state of superconductors, Ao is looking for possible mistakes in microscopic and phenomenological calculations, as well as in the corresponding experiments. The errors in his treatment of the problem (cond-mat/9704247) are analized. We indicate where the approach advocated by him fails to properly account for the interaction with impurities and other sources of relaxation.

Rotating vortex core: An instrument for detecting the core excitations

Effects of fermionic zero modes (bound states in a vortex core) on the rotational dynamics of vortices with sponaneously broken axisymmetry are considered. The results are compared with the Helsinki experiments where the vortex cores were driven to a fast rotation and torsional oscillations by an NMR r.f. field (Kondo et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 67, 81 (1991)). We predict a resonance NMR absorption on localized states at the external frequency comparable with the interelevel distance, which is similar to the cyclotron Landau damping. The resonances can experimentally resolve the localized levels in vortex cores. For a pure rotation of the core, the effect depends on the relative signs of the vortex winding number and of the core rotation; thus it is sensitive to the direction of rotation of the container. The similarity with the fermionic zero modes on the fundamental strings, which simulate the thermodynamics of black holes, is discussed.

Critical velocity and event horizon in pair-correlated systems with "relativistic" fermionic quasiparticles

The condition for the appearance of event horizon is considered in such pair-correlated systems (superfluids and superconductors) where the fermionic quasiparticles obey the "relativistic" equations. In these systems, the Landau critical velocity of superflow corresponds to the speed of light. In conventional systems, such as s-wave superconductors, the superflow remains stable even above the Landau treshold. We showed that in the "relativistic" systems however the quantum vacuum becomes unstable and the superflow collapses after the "speed of light" is reached, so that horizon cannot appear. Thus an equilibrium dissipationless superfluid flow state and the horizon are incompatible due to quantum effects. This negative result is consistent with the quantum Hawking radiation from the horizon, which would lead to the dissipation of the flow.

Superfluid 3He, Particle Physics and Cosmology

Superfluid 3He-A and high-temperature superconductors both have gapless fermionic quasiparticles with the "relativistic" spectrum close to the gap nodes. The interaction of these "relaitivistic" fermions with bosonic collective modes of the order parameter is described by the quantum field theory, which results in a close connection with particle physics. Many phenomena in high-energy physics and cosmology can thus be simulated in superfluid phases of 3He and in unconventional superconductors. This includes axial anomaly, vacuum polarization, zero-charge effect, fermionic charge of the vacuum, baryogenesis, event horizon, vacuum instability, Hawking radiation, etc. Analogs of some of these phenomena, which are related to the axial anomaly, have been experimentally simulated in superfluid 3He. This includes the baryogenesis by textures (Manchester), the baryogenesis by cosmic strings (Manchester) and the generation of the primordial magnetic field via the axial anomaly (Helsinki).

Hopf Term for a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas: Comment to Reply to Comment

In our Comment (G.E. Volovik and V.M. Yakovenko, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79 (1997) 3792) to the Letter by W. Apel and Yu.A. Bychkov (Phys. Rev. Lett. 78 (1997) 2188) we questioned the derivation of the Hopf term in the hydrodynamic action for the Skyrmion dynamics in QHE. Our main argument was that the description in terms of Euler angles used by Apel and Bychkov was potentially dangerous since these angles were ill-defined. The Reply (W. Apel and Yu.A. Bychkov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 79 (1997) 3792) to our Comment confirmed our apprehension.

On edge states in superconductor with time inversion symmetry breaking

Superconducting states with different internal topology are discussed for the layered high-T_c materials. If the time inversion symmetry is broken, the superconductivity is determined not only by the symmetry of the superconducting state, but also by the topology of the ground state. The latter is determined the integer-valued momentum-space topological invariant N. The current carrying boundary between domains with different N (N_2 and N_1) is considered. The current is produced by fermion zero modes, which number per one layer is 2(N_2-N_1).

Baryon Asymmetry of Universe: View from Superfluid 3He

The origin of the excess of matter over antimatter in our Universe remains one of the fundamental problems. The dynamical baryogenesis in the process of the broken symmetry electroweak transition in the expanding Universe is the widely discussed model where the baryonic asymmetry is induced by the quantum chiral anomaly. We discuss the modelling of this phenomenon in superfluid 3He and superconductors where the chiral anomaly is realized in the presence of quantized vortex, which introduces the nodes in the energy spectrum of the fermionic quasiparticles. The spectral flow of fermions through the nodes during the vortex motion leads to creation of the fermionic charge from the superfluid vacuum and to transfer of the superfluid linear momentum into the heat bath, thus producing an extra force on the vortex, which in some cases compensates the Magnus force. This spectral-flow force was calculated 20 years ago by Kopnin and Kravtsov for s-wave superconductors, but only recently it was measured in a broad temperature range in Manchester experiments on rotating superfluid 3He. The "momentogenesis" observed in 3He is analogous to the dynamical production of the baryons by cosmic strings. Some other possible scenaria of the baryogenesis related to superfluid 3He are discussed.

Fermionic entropy of the vortex state in d-wave superconductors

In the d-wave superconductors the electronic entropy associated with an isolated vortex diverges logarithmically with the size of the system even at low temperatures. In the vortex array the entropy per vortex per layer, $S_V$, is much larger than $k_B$ and depends on the distribution of the velocity field $v_s$ around the vortex. If there is a first order transition with the change of the velocity distribution, then there will be a big entropy jump $ΔS_V \sim 1 k_B$ at the transition. This entropy jump comes from the electronic degrees of freedom on the vortex background, which is modified by the vortex transition. This can explain the big jump in the entropy observed in the so-called vortex-melting transition [A. Junod, et. al., Physica C 27, 245 (1997)], in which the vortex array and thus the velocity field are redistributed. The possibility of the Berezinskii- Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in the 3-dimensional d-wave superconductor due to the fermionic bound states in the vortex background is discussed.

Comment on "Magnus Force in Superfluids and Superconductors"

The effective action for the Josephson junction arrays should contain the topological term, which violates the particle-hole symmetry. This term is responsible for the nonzero Magnus force acting on the vortex. The Magnus force is however small because the parameter of the particle-hole asymmetry in superconductors is small.

Defect Formation in Quench-Cooled Superfluid Phase Transition

We use neutron absorption in rotating 3He-B to heat locally a 10 micrometer-size volume into normal phase. When the heated region cools back in microseconds, vortex lines are formed. We record with NMR the number of lines as a function of superflow velocity and compare to the Kibble-Zurek theory of vortex-loop freeze-out from a random network of defects. The measurements confirm the calculated loop-size distribution and show that also the superfluid state itself forms as a patchwork of competing A and B phase blobs. This explains the A to B transition in supercooled neutron-irradiated 3He-A.

Simulation of Quantum Field Theory and Gravity in Superfluid He-3

Superfluid phases of 3He are quantuim liquids with the interacting fermionic and bosonic fields. In many respects they can simulate the interacting quantum fields in the phyiscal vacuum. One can observe analogs of such phenomena as axial anomaly, vacuum polarization, zero-charge effect, fermionic charge of the vacuum, baryogenesis, ergoregion, vacuum instability, etc. We discuss some topics on example of several linear defects in 3He-A: (1) disgyration, which simulates the extremely massive cosmic string: (2) singular vortex, which is analogous to the spinning cosmic string; and (3) continuous vortex, which motion causes the "momentogenesis" which is the analog of baryogenesis in early Universe. The production of the fermionic momentum by the vortex motion (the counterpart of the electroweak baryogenesis) has been recently measured in Manchester experiments on rotating superfluid 3He-A and 3He-B. To simulate the other phenomena one needs rather low temperature and high homogeneity, which probably can be reached under microgravity conditions.

Flux-flow in d-wave superconductors: Low temperature universality and scaling

We demonstrate that superclean d-wave superconductors display a novel type of vortex dynamics: At low temperatures, both dissipative and transverse components of the flux-flow conductivity are found to approach universal values even in the limit of infinite relaxation time. A finite dissipation in the superclean limit is explained in terms of the Landau damping on zero-frequency vortex modes which appear due to minigap nodes in the bound-state spectrum in the vortex core. In the moderately clean regime the scaling law at low T and low field is obtained.

Hopf Term for a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

In this Comment on the paper by W. Apel and Yu. A. Bychkov, cond-mat/9610040 and Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 2188 (1997), we draw attention to our prior microscopic derivations of the Hopf term for various systems and to shortcomings of the Apel-Bychkov derivation. We explain how the value of the Hopt term prefactor $Θ$ is expressed in terms of a topological invariant in the momentum space and the quantized Hall conductivity of the system. From Effective BCS Action to Vortex Dynamics

The topological term in the effective action for the electrically neutral BCS system is discussed. It is applied for the calculation of the transverse force acting on the vortex in the limit of the smooth vortex core and vanishing interlevel distance in the vortex core. The controversy between the topological terms in cond-mat/9703124 and cond-mat/9411047 is resolved.

Comment on "Scaling of the quasiparticle spectrum for d-wave superconductors"

In a recent Letter Simon and Lee suggested a scaling law for thermodynamic and kinetic properties of superconductors with lines of gap nodes. However their crossover parameter between the bulk dominated regime and the vortex dominated regime is different from that found in our paper (N.B. Kopnin and G.E. Volovik, JETP Lett., {\bf 64}, 690 (1996); see also cond-mat/9702093). We discuss the origin of the disagreement.
