Momentum creation by vortices in 3He experiments as a model of primordial baryogenesis

We show that recent 3He experiments at Manchester demonstrate the creation of excitation momentum (momentogenesis) by quantized vortices, a process analogous to baryogenesis within cosmic strings. Since superfluid 3He is the most complex field theoretic system available in the laboratory, this experiment gives a firmer foundation to chiral anomaly calculations for baryogenesis on non-trivial backgrounds of the Higgs field such as cosmic strings.

Comment on Vortex Mass and Quantum Tunneling of Vortices

Vortex mass in Fermi superfluids and superconductors and its influence on quantum tunneling of vortices are discussed. The vortex mass is essentially enhanced due to the fermion zero modes in the core of the vortex: the bound states of the Bogoliubov qiasiparticles localized in the core. These bound states form the normal component which is nonzero even in the low temperature limit. In the collisionless regime $ω_0τ\gg 1$, the normal component trapped by the vortex is unbound from the normal component in the bulk superfluid/superconductors and adds to the inertial mass of the moving vortex. In the d-wave superconductors, the vortex mass has an additional factor $(B_{c2}/B)^{1/2}$ due to the gap nodes.

On Phase Ordering Behind the Propagating Front of a Second-Order Transition

In a real system the heating is nonuniform and a second-order phase transition into a broken symmetry phase occurs by propagation of the temperature front. Two parameters, the cooling rate $τ_Q$ and the velocity $v_T$ of the transition front, determine the nucleation of topological defects. Depending on the relation of these parameters two regimes are found: in the regime of fast propagation defects are created according to the Zurek scenario for the homogeneous case, while in the slow propagation regime vortex formation is suppressed.

Poisson Brackets Scheme for Vortex Dynamics in Superfluids and Superconductors and Effect of Band Structure of Crystal

Poisson brackets for the Hamiltonian dynamics of vortices are discussed for 3 regimes, in which the dissipation can be neglected and the vortex dynamics is reversible: (i) The superclean regime when the spectral flow is suppressed. (ii) The regime when the fermions are pinned by crystal lattice. This includes also the regime of the extreme spectral flow of fermions in the vortex core: these fermions are effectively pinned by the normal component. (iii) The case when the vortices are strongly pinned by the normal component. All these limits are described by the single parameter $C_0$, which physical meaning is discussed for superconductors containing several bands of electrons and holes. The effect of the Fermi-surface topology on the vortex dynamics is also discussed.

Singularity of the Vortex Density of States in d-wave Superconductors

In d-wave superconductors, the electronic density of states (DOS) induced by a vortex exhibits 1/|E| divergency at low energies. It is the result of gap nodes in the excitations spectrum outside the vortex core. The heat capacity in two regimes, (T/T_c)^2 >> B/B_{c2} and (T/T_c)^2 << B/B_{c2}, is discussed.

Cosmology, Particle Physics and Superfluid 3He

Many direct parallels connect superfluid 3He with the field theories describing the physical vacuum, gauge fields and elementary fermions. Superfluid $^3$He exhibits a variety of topological defects which can be detected with single-defect sensitivity. Modern scenarios of defect-mediated baryogenesis can be simulated by the interaction of the 3He vortices and domain walls with fermionic quasiparticles. Formation of defects in a symmetry-breaking phase transition in the early Universe, which could be responsible for large-scale structure formation and for microwave-background anisotropy, also may be modelled in the laboratory. This is supported by the recent observation of vortex formation in neutron-irradiated 3He-B where the "primordial fireball" is formed in an exothermic nuclear reaction.

Stable Spin Precession at one Half of Equilibrium Magnetization in Superfluid 3He-B

New stable modes of spin precession have been observed in superfluid 3He-B. These dynamical order parameter states include precession with a magnetization S=pS_{eq} which is different from the equilibrium value S_{eq}. We have identified modes with p=1, 1/2 and \approx 0. The p=1/2 mode is the second member of phase correlated states of a spin superfluid. The new states can be excited in the temperature range 1-T/T_c \lesssim 0.02 where the energy barriers between the different local minima of the spin-orbit energy are small. They are stable in CW NMR due to low dissipation close to T_c.

Comment on "Transverse Force on a Quantized Vortex in a Superfluid"

The result of Thouless, Ao and Niu (TAN), that the mutual friction parameter $d_\perp =0$, contradicts to the experiments made in rotating 3He-B by Manchester group. The Manchester group observed that $d_\perp <0$ at low temperature and approaches 1 at high temperature. The reason of the contradiction is that TAN did not take into account the Iordanskii force on the vortex and the spectral flow force, which comes from the anomaly related to the low-energy bound states of fermions in cores of quantized vortices. The Iordanskii force is responsible for the negative $d_\perp <0$ at low temperature, while due to the spectral flow $d_\perp$ approaches 1 at high temperature. Relation of the spectral flow anomaly with the paradoxes of the linear and angular momenta in gapless superfluids is discussed.

Fermions on half-quantum vortex

The spectrum of the fermion zero modes in the vicinity of the vortex with fractional winding number is discussed. This is inspired by the observation of the 1/2 vortex in high-temperature superconductors (Kirtley, et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 76 (1996) 1336). The fractional value of the winding number leads to the fractional value of the invariant, which describes the topology of the energy spectrum of fermions. This results in the phenomenon of the "half-crossing": the spectrum approaches zero but does not cross it, being captured at the zero energy level. The similarity with the phenomenon of the fermion condensation is discussed.

Spectral Flow and Vortex Dynamics in Superfluids, Superconductors and Ferromagnets

We discuss the nondissipative Magnus-type force acting on linear defects in Fermi systems, such as Abrikosov vortices in superconductors, singular and continuous vortices in superfluid phases of $^3$He, magnetic vortices and skyrmions in ferromagnets. Spectral flow of fermion zero modes in the vortex core gives an essential contribution to the nondissipative force, which is confirmed in Manchester experiments on rotating $^3$He-B. The spectral flow effect is closely related to the angular momentum paradox.

AB interface in superfluid 3He and Casimir effect

The friction force on the moving interface between two different vacuum states of superfluid 3He is considered at low temperature. Since the dominating mechanism of the friction is the Andreev reflection of the massless "relativistic" fermions, which live on the A-phase side of the interface, the results are similar to that for the perfectly reflecting mirror moving in the quantum vacuum.

Glass state of superfluid 3He-A in aerogel

Glass states formed in the superfluid $^3$He confined in aerogel are discussed. If the short range order corresponds to the A-phase state, the glass state is nonsuperfluid in the long wave length limit. The superfluidity can be restored by application of a small mass current. Transitions between the superfluid and nonsuperfluid glass states can be triggered by small magnetic field and by the change of the tipping angle of magnetization in NMR experiments.

Big bang simulation in superfluid 3He-B -- Vortex nucleation in neutron-irradiated superflow

We report the observation of vortex formation upon the absorption of a thermal neutron in a rotating container of superfluid $^3$He-B. The nuclear reaction n + $^3$He = p + $^3$H + 0.76MeV heats a cigar shaped region of the superfluid into the normal phase. The subsequent cooling of this region back through the superfluid transition results in the nucleation of quantized vortices. Depending on the superflow velocity, sufficiently large vortex rings grow under the influence of the Magnus force and escape into the container volume where they are detected individually with nuclear magnetic resonance. The larger the superflow velocity the smaller the rings which can expand. Thus it is possible to obtain information about the morphology of the initial defect network. We suggest that the nucleation of vortices during the rapid cool-down into the superfluid phase is similar to the formation of defects during cosmological phase transitions in the early universe.

Is there analogy between quantized vortex and black hole?

An attempt is made to promote an analogy between quantized vortex in condensed matter and black hole: both compact objects have fermion zero modes which induce the finite temperature of these objects. The motion of the quantized vortex lines in Fermi superfluids and superconductors leads to the spectral flow of fermion zero mode. This results in finite temperature and entropy of the moving vortex. The tunneling transition rate between the fermionic levels under the influence of the vortex motion suggests the effective temperature of the vortex core $T_{\rm eff}=(2/π) p_Fv_L$, where $v_L$ is the velocity of the vortex with respect to the heat bath reference frame and $p_F$ the Fermi momentum. This is an analogue of the Unruh temperature of the accelerating object in the relativistic system. For the vortex ring with the radius $R$ this leads to the Hawking type temperature $T_{\rm vortex~ring}=(\hbar v_F / 2πR) \ln (R/r_c)$, where $v_F$ is the Fermi velocity and $r_c$ is the radius of the vortex core. The corresponding "Hawking" entropy of the vortex ring of radius $R$ and area $A=πR^2$ appears to be ${\cal S}_{\rm vortex ~ring}=(1/6) A p_F^2$. Similar expression but with different numerical factor is obtained for the instanton action for the quantum nucleation of the vortex loop from the homogeneous vacuum, and also for the "Bekenstein" entropy obtained by counting the number of fermionic bound states which appear when the vortex loop is created. For the superfluid $^3$He-A, where some components of the order parameter play the part of the gravitational field, the Fermi momentum $p_F$ corresponds to the Planck scale for this effective gravity. The effective action for the gravity field is obtained after integration over the fermion fields in correspondence with the Sakharov

Spectral Flow in Josephson Junctions and Effective Magnus Force

Momentum production during the phase slip process in SNS Josephson junction is discussed. It is caused by the spectral flow of bound states of fermions localized within the junction. This effectively reduces the Magnus force acting on vortices which provides an explanation for the experimental observation of the negligible Magnus force in 2D Josephson junction arrays. The flow of the fermionic levels is similar to that in sphalerons in particle physics, where it gives rise to the baryogenesis.

One-dimensional fermi liquid and symmetry breaking in the vortex core

Fermions localized within vortex cores can form one-dimensional Fermi liquids. The nonzero density of states in these Fermi-liquids can lead to instability of the symmetric structure of the vortex core. We consider a symmetry breaking which is obtained due to spontaneous admixture of the spin-triplet p-wave component of the order parameter in conventional s-wave vortex in the presence of magnetic field. This occurs at low enough temperature and leads to an asymmetric shape of the vortex core. Similar phenomenon of the symmetry breaking induced by the core fermions occurs in electroweak $Z$-strings (S.G. Naculich, Phys. Rev. Lett., 75 (1995), 998).

Aspects of ${}^3$He and the Standard Electroweak Model

We describe certain aspects of ${}^3He$ and compare them to related aspects of the standard electroweak model of particle physics. We note various similarities in the order parameter structure, defect structure, interactions with fermions and anomalies in the two systems. Many issues in the condensed matter literature that are often confusing to the particle physics reader and vice versa are clarified.
