Superoxide anion (O$_{2}\negthinspace^{-}$) collisions with CO$_{2}$ molecules in the energy range 50-950 eV

A novel gas-phase molecular scattering study is reported for O$_{2}\negthinspace^{-}$ colliding with CO$_{2}$ for impact energies ranging from 50 to 950 eV. The absolute total electron detachment, relative total and partial ionization cross sections have been measured within this energy range and the positive ion yield of those produced during the collisions has been obtained. The primary anionic beam projectile is produced in a pulsed hollow cathode discharge induced plasma, and its interactions with the neutral molecular target occur in a gas cell at a well-known constant pressure. For impact energies above 500 eV high mass (m $>$ 44 u) charged complexes have been detected. With the aid of a theoretical study, using ab initio methods, we propose a mechanism to infer on the formation of these cationic species, which have been assigned as projectile-target stable compounds (CO$_{3}\negthinspace^{+}$ and CO$_{4}\negthinspace^{+}$).

Diamond-defect engineering of NV- centers using ion beam irradiation

The interplay between ion beam modification techniques in the MeV range and the controlled generation of negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) centers in nitrogen-doped synthetic diamond crystals is explored. An experimental approach employing both light (H+) and heavy (Br+6) ions was followed to assess their respective impacts on the creation of NV- centers, using different ion energies or fluences to generate varying amounts of vacancies. Photoluminescence spectroscopy was applied to characterize NV- and neutral NV0 centers. Initially, no NV centers were detected post-irradiation, despite the presence of substitutional nitrogen and vacancies. However, after annealing at 800C (and in some cases at 900C), most samples exhibited a high density of NV0 and especially NV- centers. This demonstrates that thermal treatment is essential for vacancy-nitrogen recombination and NV- formation, often through electron capture from nearby nitrogen atoms. Notably, we achieved high NV- densities without graphitization, which is essential for preserving the material's properties for quantum applications. This study underscores and quantifies the effectiveness of MeV-range ions in controlling vacancy distributions and highlights their potential for optimizing NV- center formation to enhance the sensitivity of diamond-based quantum magnetic sensors.

Finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebras over finite simple groups of Lie type VII. Semisimple classes in PSL(n,q) and PSp(2n,q)

We show that the Nichols algebra of a simple Yetter-Drinfeld module over a projective special linear group over a finite field whose support is a semisimple orbit has infinite dimension, provided that the elements of the orbit are reducible; we obtain a similar result for all semisimple orbits in a finite symplectic group except in low rank. We prove that orbits of irreducible elements in the projective special linear groups could not be treated with our methods. We conclude that any finite-dimensional pointed Hopf algebra H with group of grouplike elements isomorphic to PSL(n,q) (n greater than or equal to 4), PSL(3,q) (q greater than 2), or PSp(2n,q) (n greater than or equal to 3), is isomorphic to a group algebra, completing work in arXiv:1506.06794.

The ZEUS Forward Plug Calorimeter with Lead-Scintillator Plates and WLS Fiber Readout

A Forward Plug Calorimeter (FPC) for the ZEUS detector at HERA has been built as a shashlik lead-scintillator calorimeter with wave length shifter fiber readout. Before installation it was tested and calibrated using the X5 test beam facility of the SPS accelerator at CERN. Electron, muon and pion beams in the momentum range of 10 to 100 GeV/c were used. Results of these measurements are presented as well as a calibration monitoring system based on a $^{60}$Co source.
