Phenomenological analysis of D-brane Pati-Salam vacua

In the present work we perform a phenomenological analysis of the effective low energy models with Pati-Salam (PS) gauge symmetry derived in the context of D-branes. A main issue in these models arises from the fact that the right-handed fermions and the PS-symmetry breaking Higgs field transform identically under the PS symmetry, causing unnatural matter-Higgs mixing effects. We argue that this problem could be solved in particular D-brane setups where these fields arise in different intersections. We further observe that whenever a large Higgs mass term is generated in a particular class of mass spectra, a splitting mechanism -reminiscent of the doublet triplet splitting- may protect the neutral Higgs components from a heavy mass term. We analyze the implications of each individual representation which in principle is available in these models in order to specify the minimal spectrum required to build up a consistent PS model which reconciles the low energy data. A short discussion is devoted on the effects of stringy instanton corrections, particularly those generating missing Yukawa couplings and contributing to the fermion mass textures. We discuss the correlations of the intersecting D-brane spectra with those obtained from Gepner constructions and analyze the superpotential, the resulting mass textures and the low energy implications of some examples of the latter along the lines proposed above.

D-brane Inspired Fermion Mass Textures

In this paper, the issues of the quark mass hierarchies and the Cabbibo Kobayashi Maskawa mixing are analyzed in a class of intersecting D-brane configurations with Standard Model gauge symmetry. The relevant mass matrices are constructed taking into account the constraints imposed by extra abelian symmetries and anomaly cancelation conditions. Possible mass generating mechanisms including perturbative as well as non-perturbative effects are discussed and specific patterns of mass textures are found characterized by the hierarchies of the scales where the various sources contribute. It is argued that the Cholesky decomposition of the mass matrices is the most appropriate way to determine the properties of these fermion mass patterns, while the associated triangular mass matrix form provides a unified description of all phenomenologically equivalent symmetric and non-symmetric mass matrices. An elegant analytic formula is derived for the Cholesky triangular form of the mass matrices where the entries are given as simple functions of the mass eigenstates and the diagonalizing transformation entries. Finally, motivated by the possibility of vanishing zero Yukawa mass entries in several D-brane and F-theory constructions due to the geometry of the internal space, we analyse in detail all possible texture-zeroes mass matrices within the proposed new context. These new texture-zeroes are compared to those existing in the literature while D-brane inspired cases are worked out in detail.

Instanton induced charged fermion and neutrino masses in a minimal Standard Model scenario from intersecting D-branes

String instanton Yukawa corrections from Euclidean D-branes are investigated in an effective Standard Model theory obtained from the minimal U(3)xU(2)xU(1) D-brane configuration. In the case of the minimal chiral and Higgs spectrum, it is found that superpotential contributions are induced by string instantons for the perturbatively forbidden entries of the up and down quark mass matrices. Analogous non-perturbative effects generate heavy Majorana neutrino masses and a Dirac neutrino texture with factorizable Yukawa couplings. For this latter case, a specific example is worked out where it is shown how this texture can reconcile the neutrino data.

A U(3)_C X U(3)_L X U(3)_R gauge symmetry from intersecting D-branes

A three-family non-supersymmetric model with U(3)^3 gauge symmetry is analyzed in the context of intersecting D-branes. This is equivalent to the `trinification' model extended by three U(1) factors which survive as global symmetries in the low energy effective model. The Standard Model fermions are accommodated in the three possible bifundamental multiplets represented by strings with endpoints attached on different brane-stacks of this particular setup. Further, a natural Quark-Lepton hierarchy is realized due to the existence of the additional abelian symmetries

Towards a realistic Standard Model from D-brane configurations

Effective low energy models arising in the context of D-brane configurations with Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry extended by several gauged abelian factors are discussed. The models are classified according to their hypercharge embeddings consistent with the SM spectrum hypercharge assignment. Particular cases are analyzed according to their perspectives and viability as low energy effective field theory candidates. The resulting string scale is determined by means of a two-loop renormalization group calculation. Their implications in Yukawa couplings, neutrinos and flavor changing processes are also presented.

D-brane Standard Model variants and Split Supersymmetry: Unification and fermion mass predictions

We study D-brane inspired models with U(3) x U(2) x U(1)^N gauge symmetry in the context of split supersymmetry. We consider configurations with one, two and three (N=1,2,3) abelian branes and derive all hypercharge embeddings which imply a realistic particle content. Then, we analyze the implications of split supersymmetry on the magnitude of the string scale, the gauge coupling evolution, the third family fermion mass relations and the gaugino masses. We consider gauge coupling relations which may arise in parallel as well as intersecting brane scenarios and classify the various models according to their predictions for the magnitude of the string scale and the low energy implications. In the parallel brane scenario where the U(1) branes are superposed to U(2) or U(3) brane stacks, varying the split susy scale in a wide range, we find three distinct cases of models predicting a high, intermediate and low string scale, M_S ~ 10^{16} GeV, M_S ~ 10^7 GeV and M_S ~ 10^4 GeV respectively. We further find that in the intermediate string scale model the low energy ratio m_b / m_τis compatible with b-τYukawa unification at the string scale. Furthermore, we perform a similar analysis for arbitrary abelian gauge coupling relations at M_S corresponding to possible intersecting brane models. We find cases which predict a string scale of the order M_S \ge 10^{14} GeV that accommodate a right-handed neutrino mass of the same order so that a see-saw type light left-handed neutrino component is obtained in the sub-eV range as required by experimental and cosmological data. Finally, a short discussion is devoted for the gaugino masses and the life-time of the gluino.

Renormalization effects on neutrino masses and mixing in a string-inspired SU(4) X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_X model

We discuss renormalization effects on neutrino masses and mixing angles in a supersymmetric string-inspired SU(4) X SU(2)_L X SU(2)_R X U(1)_X model, with matter in fundamental and antisymmetric tensor representations and singlet Higgs fields charged under the anomalous U(1)_X family symmetry. The quark, lepton and neutrino Yukawa matrices are distinguished by different Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. The presence of a second U(1)_X breaking singlet with fractional charge allows a more realistic, hierarchical light neutrino mass spectrum with bi-large mixing. By numerical investigation we find a region in the model parameter space where the neutrino mass-squared differences and mixing angles at low energy are consistent with experimental data.

Inverted neutrino mass hierarchies from U(1) symmetries

Motivated by effective low energy models of string origin, we discuss the neutrino masses and mixing within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model supplemented by a U(1) anomalous family symmetry and additional Higgs singlet fields charged under this extra U(1). In particular, we interpret the solar and atmospheric neutrino data assuming that there are only three left-handed neutrinos which acquire Majorana masses via a lepton number violating dimension-five operator. We derive the general form of the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices when two different pairs of singlet Higgs fields develop non--zero vacuum expectation values and show how the resulting neutrino textures are related to approximate lepton flavor symmetries. We perform a numerical analysis for one particular case and obtain solutions for masses and mixing angles, consistent with experimental data.

A D-brane inspired U(3)_CxU(3)_LxU(3)_R model

Motivated by D-brane scenarios, we consider a non-supersymmetric model based on the gauge symmetry U(3)_CxU(3)_LxU(3)_R$ which is equivalent to the SU(3)^3 ``trinification'' model supplemented by three U(1)s. Two U(1) combinations are anomalous while the third U(1)_Z' is anomaly free and contributes to the hypercharge generator. This hypercharge embedding correspods to sin^2θ_W=6/19 in the case of full gauge coupling unification. The U(3)^3 symmetry is broken down to the Standard Model by vev's of two (1,3,\bar3)- scalar multiplets supplemented by two Higgs fields in (1,3,1) and (1,1,3) representations. The latter break U(1)_Z' and provide heavy masses to the extra lepton doublets. Fermions belong to (3,\bar 3,1)+(\bar 3,1,3)+ (1,3,\bar 3) representations as in the trinification model. The model predicts a natural quark-lepton hierarchy, since quark masses are obtained from tree-level couplings, while charged leptons receive masses from fourth order Yukawa terms, as a consequence of the extra abelian symmetries. Light Majorana neutrino masses are obtained through a see-saw type mechanism operative at the SU(3)_R breaking scale of the order M_R\ge 10^9 GeV.

Gauge coupling and fermion mass relations in low string scale brane models

We analyze the gauge coupling evolution in brane inspired models with $U(3) \times U(2) \times U(1)^N$ symmetry at the string scale. We restrict to the case of brane configurations with two and three abelian factors (N=2,3) and where only one Higgs doublet is coupled to down quarks and leptons and only one to the up quarks. We find that the correct hypercharge assignment of the Standard Model particles is reproduced for six viable models distinguished by different brane configurations. We investigate the third generation fermion mass relations and find that the correct low energy $m_b/m_τ$ ratio can be obtained for $b-τ$ Yukawa coupling equality at a string scale as low as $M_S \sim 10^3$ TeV.

Majorana Neutrino Masses from Anomalous U(1) Symmetries

We explore the possibility of interpreting the solar and atmospheric neutrino data within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model augmented by a single U(1) anomalous family symmetry spontaneously broken by non-zero vacuum expectation values of a pair of singlet fields. The symmetry retains a dimension-five operator which provides Majorana masses for left-handed neutrino states. Assuming symmetric lepton mass matrices, the model predicts inverse hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum, theta_{13}=0 and large mixing while at the same time it provides acceptable mass matrices for the charged fermions.

Non-Collapsing Membrane Instantons in Higher Dimensions

We introduce a particular embedding of seven dimensional self-duality membrane equations in C^3\times R which breaks G_2 invariance down to SU(3). The world-volume membrane instantons define SU(3) special lagrangian submanifolds of C^3. We discuss in detail solutions for spherical and toroidal topologies assuming factorization of time. We show that the extra dimensions manifest themselves in the solutions through the appearance of a non-zero conserved charge which prevents the collapse of the membrane. We find non-collapsing rotating membrane instantons which contract from infinite size to a finite one and then they bounce to infinity in finite time. Their motion is periodic. These generalized complex Nahm equations, in the axially symmetric case, lead to extensions of the continuous Toda equation to complex space.

On the stability of nontopological solitons in supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model: A Numerical Approach

In various supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model there appear non-topological solitons due to the existence of U(1) global symmetries associated with Baryon and/or Lepton quantum numbers. Trilinear couplings (A-terms) in the scalar potential break explicitly the U(1) invariance. We investigate numerically the stability of these objects in the case that this breaking is small. We find that stable configurations, oscillating though, can still appear. Other relevant properties are also examined.

A Pati-Salam model from branes

We explore the possibility of embedding the Pati-Salam model in the context of Type I brane models. We study a generic model with U(4)_C x U(2)_L x U(2)_R gauge symmetry and matter fields compatible with a Type I brane configuration. Examining the anomaly cancellation conditions of the surplus abelian symmetries we find an alternative hypercharge embedding that is compatible with a low string/brane scale of the order of 5-7 TeV, when the U(4)_C and U(2)_R brane stack couplings are equal. Proton stability is assured as baryon number is associated to a global symmetry remnant of the broken abelian factors. It is also shown that this scenario can accommodate an extra low energy abelian symmetry that can be associated to lepton number. The issue of fermion and especially neutrino masses is also discussed.

World volume Supermembrane Instantons in the light-cone frame

In this review we present the octonionic duality for membranes. We start with a discussion on the relation of the Yang Mills theories and the supermembrane Hamiltonian in the light-cone gauge. We further derive the self-duality equations for the membranes and discuss the integrability of the system in 7 and 3 dimensions. Finally, we present classical Euclidean time solutions of these equations and examine the supersymmetries left intact by the self-duality equations.

A Novel Mass Hierarchy and Discrete Excitation Spectra from Quantum-Fluctuating D-branes

We elaborate further on a recently proposed scenario for generating a mass hierarchy through quantum fluctuations of a single D3 brane, which represents our world embedded in a bulk five-dimensional space time. In this scenario, the quantum fluctuations of the D3-brane world in the bulk direction, quantified to leading order via a `recoil' world-sheet logarithmic conformal field theory approach, result in the dynamical appearance of a supersymmetry breaking (obstruction) scale alpha. This may be naturally taken to be at the TeV range, in order to provide a solution to the conventional gauge-hierarchy problem. The bulk spatial direction is characterized by the dynamical appearance of an horizon located at +- 1/alpha, inside which the positive energy conditions for the existence of stable matter are satisfied. To ensure the correct value of the four-dimensional Planck mass, the bulk string scale M_s is naturally found to lie at an intermediate energy scale of 10^{14} GeV. As an exclusive feature of the D3-brane quantum fluctuations (`recoil') we find that, for any given M_5, there is a discrete mass spectrum for four-dimensional Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of bulk graviton and/or scalar fields. KK modes with masses 0 <= m < sqrt{2}alpha << M_s are found to have wavefunctions peaked, and hence localized, on the D3 brane at z=0.

Implications of Anomalous U(1) Symmetry in Unified Models: the Flipped SU(5) x U(1) Paradigm

A generic feature of string-derived models is the appearance of an anomalous Abelian U(1)_A symmetry which, among other properties, constrains the Yukawa couplings and distinguishes the three families from each other. In this paper, we discuss in a model-independent way the general constraints imposed by such a U(1)_A symmetry on fermion masses, R-violating couplings and proton-decay operators in a generic flipped SU(5) x U(1)' model. We construct all possible viable fermion mass textures and give various examples of effective low-energy models which are distinguished from each other by their different predictions for B-, L- and R-violating effects. We pay particular attention to predictions for neutrino masses, in the light of the recent Super-Kamiokande data.

A mass hierarchy from recoiling D branes

Using conformal field theory methods we construct a metric that describes the distortion of space-time surrounding a D(irichlet)-brane (solitonic) defect after being struck by another D-brane. By viewing our four-dimensional universe as such a struck brane, embedded in a five-dimensional space-time, we argue on the appearance of a band of massive Kaluza-Klein excitations for the bulk graviton which is localized in a region of the fifth dimension determined by the inverse size of the band. The band incorporates the massless mode (ordinary graviton) and its thickness is determined essentially by the width of the Gaussian distribution describing the (target-space) quantum fluctuations of the intersecting-brane configuration.
