Charged-Lepton-Flavour Violation in the Light of the Super-Kamiokande Data

Motivated by the data from Super-Kamiokande and elsewhere indicating oscillations of atmospheric and solar neutrinos, we study charged-lepton-flavour violation, in particular the radiative decays mu -> e gamma and tau -> mu gamma, but also commenting on mu -> 3e and tau -> 3 mu/e decays, as well as mu - e conversion on nuclei. We first show how the renormalization group may be used to calculate flavour-violating soft supersymmetry-breaking masses for charged sleptons and sneutrinos in models with universal input parameters. Subsequently, we classify possible patterns of lepton-flavour violation in the context of phenomenological neutrino mass textures that accommodate the Super-Kamiokande data, giving examples based on Abelian flavour symmetries. Then we calculate in these examples rates for mu -> e gamma and tau ->mu gamma, which may be close to the present experimental upper limits, and show how they may distinguish between the different generic mixing patterns. The rates are promisingly large when the soft supersymmetry-breaking mass parameters are chosen to be consistent with the cosmological relic-density constraints. In addition, we discuss mu -> e conversion on Titanium, which may also be accessible to future experiments.

New fermion mass textures from anomalous U(1) symmetries with baryon and lepton number conservation

In this paper, we present solutions to the fermion mass hierarchy problem in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard theory augmented by an anomalous family-dependent U(1)_X symmetry. The latter is spontaneously broken by non-zero vevs of a pair of singlet fields whose magnitude is determined through the D- and F-flatness conditions of the superpotential. We derive the general solutions to the anomaly cancellation conditions and show that they allow numerous choices for the U(1)_X fermion charges which give several fermion mass textures in agreement with the observed fermion mass hierarchy and mixing. Solutions with U(1)_X fermion charge assignments are found which forbid or substantially suppress the dangerous baryon and lepton number violating operators and the lepton-higgs mixing coupling while a higgs mixing mass (μ-term) can be fixed at the electroweak level. We give a general classification of the fermion mass textures with respect to the sum of the doublet-higgs U(1)_X-charges and show that suppression of dimension-five operators naturally occurs for various charge assignments. We work out cases which retain a quartic term providing the left-handed neutrinos with Majorana masses in the absence of right-handed neutrino components and consistent with the experimental bounds. Although there exist solutions which naturally combine all the above features with rather natural U(1)_X charges, the suppression of the μ-term occurs for particular assignments.

Unified Models at Intermediate Energy Scales and Kaluza-Klein Excitations

We discuss the possibility of intermediate gauge coupling unification in unified models of string origin. Useful relations of the β-function coefficients are derived, which ensure unification of couplings when Kaluza--Klein excitations are included above the compactification scale. We apply this procedure to two models with SU(3)\times SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R and SU(4)\times O(4) gauge symmetries.

The Matrix model and the non-commutative geometry of the supermembrane

This is a short note on the relation of the Matrix model with the non-commutative geometry of the 11-dimensional supermembrane. We put forward the idea that M-theory is described by the 't Hooft topological expansion of the Matrix model in the large N-limit where all topologies of membranes appear. This expansion can faithfully be represented by the Moyal Yang-Mills theory of membranes. We discuss this conjecture in the case of finite N, where the non-commutative geometry of the membrane is given be the finite quantum mechanics. The use of the finite dimensional representations of the Heisenberg group reveals the cellular structure of a toroidal supermembrane on which the Matrix model appears as a non-commutatutive Yang-Mills theory. The Moyal star product on the space of functions in the case of rational values of the Planck constant \hbar represents exactly this cellular structure. We also discuss the integrability of the instanton sector as well as the topological charge and the corresponding Bogomol'nyi bound.

Higgs Mass Textures in Flipped SU(5)

We analyze the Higgs doublet-triplet mass splitting problem in the version of flipped SU(5) derived from string theory. Analyzing non-renormalizable terms up to tenth order in the superpotential, we identify a pattern of field vev's that keeps one pair of electroweak Higgs doublets light, while all other Higgs doublets and all Higgs triplets are kept heavy, with the aid of the economical missing-doublet mechanism found in the field-theoretical version of flipped SU(5). The solution predicts that second-generation charge -1/3 quarks and charged leptons are much lighter than those in the third generation.

Low Scale Unification, Newton's Law and Extra Dimensions

Motivated by recent work on low energy unification, in this short note we derive corrections on Newton's inverse square law due to the existence of extra decompactified dimensions. In the four-dimensional macroscopic limit we find that the corrections are of Yukawa type. Inside the compactified space of n-extra dimensions the sub-leading term is proportional to the (n+1)- power of the distance over the compactification radius ratio. Some physical implications of these modifications are briefly discussed.

U(1) textures and Lepton Flavor Violation

U(1) family symmetries have led to successful predictions of the fermion mass spectrum and the mixing angles of the hadronic sector. In the context of the supersymmetric unified theories, they further imply a non-trivial mass structure for the scalar partners, giving rise to new sources of flavor violation. In the present work, lepton flavor non-conserving processes are examined in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model augmented by a U(1)-family symmetry. We calculate the mixing effects on the μ-> eγand τ-> μγrare decays. All supersymmetric scalar masses involved in the processes are determined at low energies using two loop renormalization group analysis and threshold corrections. Further, various novel effects are considered and found to have important impact on the branching ratios. Thus, a rather interesting result is that when the see-saw mechanism is applied in the (12 X 12)-sneutrino mass matrix, the mixing effects of the Dirac matrix in the effective light sneutrino sector are canceled at first order. In this class of models and for the case that soft term mixing is already present at the GUT scale, tau -> μγdecays are mostly expected to arise at rates significantly smaller than the current experimental limits. On the other hand, the $μ\ra e γ$ rare decays impose important bounds on the model parameters, particularly on the supersymmetric scalar mass spectrum. In the absence of soft term mixing at high energies, the predicted branching ratios for rare decays are, as expected, well below the experimental bounds.

String Unification at Intermediate Energies: Phenomenological Viability and Implications

Motivated by the fact that the string scale can be many orders of magnitude lower than the Planck mass, we investigate the required modifications in the MSSM $β$--functions in order to achieve intermediate ($10^{10-13}$GeV) scale unification, keeping the traditional logarithmic running of the gauge couplings. We present examples of string unified models with the required extra matter for such a unification while we also check whether other MSSM properties (such as radiative symmetry breaking) are still applicable.

N=1 supersymmetric SU(4)xSU(2)LxSU(2)R effective theory from the weakly coupled heterotic superstring

In the context of the free-fermionic formulation of the heterotic superstring, we construct a three generation N=1 supersymmetric SU(4)xSU(2)LxSU(2)R model supplemented by an SU(8) hidden gauge symmetry and five Abelian factors. The symmetry breaking to the standard model is achieved using vacuum expectation values of a Higgs pair in (4bar,2R)+(4,2R) at a high scale. One linear combination of the Abelian symmetries is anomalous and is broken by vacuum expectation values of singlet fields along the flat directions of the superpotential. All consistent string vacua of the model are completely classified by solving the corresponding system of F- and D-flatness equations including non-renormalizable terms up to sixth order. The requirement of existence of electroweak massless doublets further restricts the phenomenologically viable vacua. The third generation fermions receive masses from the tree-level superpotential. Further, a complete calculation of all non-renormalizable fermion mass terms up to fifth order shows that in certain string vacua the hierarchy of the fermion families is naturally obtained in the model as the second and third generation fermions earn their mass from fourth and fifth order terms. Along certain flat directions it is shown that the ratio of the SU(4) breaking scale and the reduced Planck mass is equal to the up quark ratio m_c/m_t at the string scale. An additional prediction of the model, is the existence of a U(1) symmetry carried by the fields of the hidden sector, ensuring thus the stability of the lightest hidden state. It is proposed that the hidden states may account for the invisible matter of the universe.

Q-Balls and the Proton Stability in Supersymmetric Theories

Abelian non-topological solitons with Baryon and/or Lepton quantum numbers naturally appear in the spectrum of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. They arise as a consequence of the existence of flat directions in the potential lifted by non renormalizable operators and SUSY breaking. We examine the conditions that these operators should satisfy in order to ensure proton stability and present a realistic string model which fulfils these requirements. We further identify a generic U(1) breaking term in the scalar potential and discuss its effect of rendering Q-balls unstable.

Neutrino Textures in the Light of Super-Kamiokande Data and a Realistic String Model

Motivated by the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data, we discuss possible textures for Majorana and Dirac neutrino masses within the see-saw framework. The main purposes of this paper are twofold: first to obtain intuition from a purely phenomenological analysis, and secondly to explore to what extent it may be realized in a specific model. We comment initially on the simplified two-generation case, emphasizing that large mixing is not incompatible with a large hierarchy of mass eigenvalues. We also emphasize that renormalization-group effects may amplify neutrino mixing, presenting semi-analytic expressions for estimating this amplification. Several examples are then given of three-family neutrino mass textures which may also accommodate the persistent solar neutrino deficit, with different assumptions for the neutrino Dirac mass matrices. We comment on a few features of neutrino mass textures arising in models with a U(1) flavour symmetry. Finally, we discuss the possible pattern of neutrino masses in a `realistic' flipped SU(5) model derived from string theory, illustrating how a desirable pattern of mixing may emerge. Both small- or large-angle MSW solutions are possible, whilst a hierarchy of neutrino masses appears more natural than near-degeneracy. This model contains some unanticipated features that may also be relevant in other models: the neutrino Dirac matrices may not be related closely to the quark mass matrices, and the heavy Majorana states may include extra gauge-singlet fields.

Lepton Flavour Violation in Unified Models with U(1)-Family Symmetries

Lepton flavour non-conserving processes are examined in the context of unified models with U(1)-family symmetries which reproduce successfully the low-energy hierarchy of the fermion mass spectrum and the Kobayashi - Maskawa mixing. These models usually imply mixing effects in the supersymmetric scalar sector. We construct the fermion and scalar mass matrices in two viable models, and calculate the mixing effects on the $μ\to eγ$, $μ\to 3 e$ and $τ\to μγ$ rare decays. The relevant constraints on the sparticle mass spectrum as well as the role of various MSSM parameters are discussed.

A Note on the Supersymmetries of the Self-Dual Supermembrane

In this letter we discuss the supersymmetry issue of the self dual supermembranes in (8+1) and (4+1)-dimensions. We find that all genuine solutions of the (8+1)-dimensional supermembrane, based on the exceptional group G_2, preserve one of the sixteen supersymmetries while all solutions in (4+1)-dimensions preserve eight of them.

Hybrid MSW + VO Solution of the Solar Neutrino Problem in String-Motivated Unified Theories

It is shown that the hybrid MSW + VO solution of the solar neutrino problem, according to which the solar nu_e undergo matter-enhanced transitions into nu_mu, nu_tau in the Sun followed by long wave length (about 1.5 10^8 km) nu_e -> nu_mu, nu_tau oscillations in vacuum between the Sun and the Earth, can occur naturally in string-motivated grand unified theories. We consider the supersymmetric version of a string-type SU(4)xSU(2)_LxSU(2)_R theory with U(1)_X family symmetry, which was shown to successfully describe the charged fermion masses and the quark mixing, and extend the earlier fermion mass analysis to the neutrino sector. We show that the four oscillation parameters Delta m_31^2, Delta m_21^2 and sin^2 2 theta_12, sin^2 2 theta_13, characterising the combined matter-enhanced transitions and vacuum oscillations of the solar nu_e, naturally get values in the ranges of the hybrid MSW + VO solutions found recently.

On The Instanton Solutions Of The Self-Dual Membrane In Various Dimensions

We present some methods of determining explicit solutions for self-dual supermembranes in 4+1 and 8+1 dimensions with spherical or toroidal topology. For configurations of axial symmetry, the continuous SU(\infty) Toda equation turns out to play a central role, and a specific method of determining all the periodic solutions are suggested. A number of examples are studied in detail.

Fermion Mass Textures in an M-Inspired Flipped SU(5) Model Derived from String

We are inspired by the facts that M-theory may reconcile the supersymmetric GUT scale with that of quantum gravity, and that it provides new avenues for low-energy supersymmetry breaking, to re-examine a flipped SU(5) model that has been derived from string and may possess an elevation to a fully-fledged M-phenomenological model. Using a complete analysis of all superpotential terms through the sixth order, we explore in this model a new flat potential direction that provides a pair of light Higgs doublets, yields realistic textures for the fermion mass matrices, and is free of R-violating interactions and dimension-five proton decay operators.

Modular Weights, U(1)'s and Mass Matrices

We derive the scalar mass matrices in effective supergravity models augmented by a $U(1)_F$ family symmetry. Simple relations between $U(1)_F$ charges and modular weights of the superfields are derived and used to express the matrices with a minimum number of parameters. The model predicts a branching ratio for the $μ\to eγ$ process close to the present experimental limits.

Octonionic Selfduality for SuperMembranes

In this work we study the recently introduced octonionic duality for membranes. Restricting the self - duality equations to seven space dimensions, we provide various forms for them which exhibit the symmetries of the octonionic and quaternionic structure. These forms may turn to be useful for the question of the integrability of this system. Introducing a consistent quadratic Poisson algebra of functions on the membrane we are able to factorize the time dependence of the self - duality equations. We further give the general linear embeddings of the three dimensional system into the seven dimensional one using the invariance of the self-duality equations under the exceptional group G_2.
