Charge susceptibility in the t-J model

Momentum and doping dependence of the static charge susceptibility χ(q) in the t-t'-J model is investigated. Correlations lead to a strongly momentum dependent renormalization of χ(q). The charge susceptibility near (π,π) region of the Brillouin zone is strongly suppressed as the hole density δis decreased. However, contrary to naive expectations, χ(q) around q = (π,0) and (0,π) remains large and practically unchanged at δ\sim 0.1-0.5. This effect is consistent with a tendency towards low-energy charge fluctuations with the wave vectors along the Γ-X direction, reported in earlier studies. Our main finding is that the above trends are amplified by J-driven pairing effects, indicating that the pseudogap formation may promote the charge inhomogeneity. The next-nearest hopping t' leads to weakening of the above momentum-selective renormalizations of χ(q). We analyze the effects of long-range Coulomb interaction, taking into account a layered structure of cuprates. As an application, the results are discussed in the context of bond-stretching phonon softening in hole-doped cuprates. In particular, a peculiar doping and momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling constant is found.

Magnetic properties of spin-orbital polarons in lightly doped cobaltates

We present a numerical treatment of a spin-orbital polaron model for Na_xCoO_2 at small hole concentration (0.7 < x < 1). We demonstrate how the polarons account for the peculiar magnetic properties of this layered compound: They explain the large susceptibility; their internal degrees of freedom lead both to a negative Curie-Weiss temperature and yet to a ferromagnetic intra-layer interaction, thereby resolving a puzzling contradiction between these observations. We make specific predictions on the momentum and energy location of excitations resulting from the internal degrees of freedom of the polaron, and discuss their impact on spin-wave damping.

Theory of orbital state and spin interactions in ferromagnetic titanates

A spin-orbital superexchange Hamiltonian in a Mott insulator with $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy is investigated. More specifically, we focus on a spin ferromagnetic state of the model and study a collective behavior of orbital angular momentum. Orbital order in the model occurs in a nontrivial way -- it is stabilized exclusively by quantum effects through the order-from-disorder mechanism. Several energetically equivalent orbital orderings are identified. Some of them are specified by a quadrupole ordering and have no unquenched angular momentum at low energy. Other states correspond to a noncollinear ordering of the orbital angular momentum and show the magnetic Bragg peaks at specific positions. Order parameters are unusually small because of strong quantum fluctuations. Orbital contribution to the resonant x-ray scattering is discussed. The dynamical magnetic structure factor in different ordered states is calculated. Predictions made should help to observe elementary excitations of orbitals and also to identify the type of the orbital order in ferromagnetic titanates. Including further a relativistic spin-orbital coupling, we derive an effective low-energy spin Hamiltonian and calculate a spin-wave spectrum, which is in good agreement with recent experimental observations in YTiO$_3$.

Low energy electronic states and triplet pairing in layered cobaltates

The structure of the low-energy electronic states in layered cobaltates is considered starting from the Mott insulating limit. We argue that the coherent part of the wave-functions and the Fermi-surface topology at low doping are strongly influenced by spin-orbit coupling of the correlated electrons on the $t_{2g}$ level. An effective t-J model based on mixed spin-orbital states is radically different from that for the cuprates, and supports unconventional, pseudospin-triplet pairing.

Orbital excitations in titanates

Raman scattering is used to observe pronounced electronic excitations around 230 meV - well above the two-phonon range - in the Mott insulators LaTiO$_3$ and YTiO$_3$. Based on the temperature, polarization, and photon energy dependence, the modes are identified as orbital excitations. The observed profiles bear a striking resemblance to magnetic Raman modes in the insulating parent compounds of the superconducting cuprates, indicating an unanticipated universality of the electronic excitations in transition metal oxides.

Spin-controlled Mott-Hubbard bands in LaMnO_3 probed by optical ellipsometry

Spectral ellipsometry has been used to determine the dielectric function of an untwinned crystal of LaMnO_3 in the spectral range 0.5-5.6 eV at temperatures 50 K < T < 300 K. A pronounced redistribution of spectral weight is found at the Neel temperature T_N = 140 K. The anisotropy of the spectral weight transfer matches the magnetic ordering pattern. A superexchange model quantitatively describes spectral weight transfer induced by spin correlations. This analysis implies that the lowest-energy transitions around 2 eV are intersite d-d transitions, and that LaMnO_3 is a Mott-Hubbard insulator.

Magnon softening and damping in the ferromagnetic manganites due to orbital correlations

We present a theory for spin excitations in ferromagnetic metallic manganites and demonstrate that orbital fluctuations have strong effects on the magnon dynamics in the case these compounds are close to a transition to an orbital ordered state. In particular we show that the scattering of the spin excitations by low-lying orbital modes with cubic symmetry causes both the magnon softening and damping observed experimentally.

Charge ordering and magneto-polarons in Na$_{0.82}$CoO$_2$

Using spectral ellipsometry, we have measured the dielectric function of a Na$_{0.82(2)}$CoO$_2$ crystal that exhibits bulk antiferromagnetism with T$_{N}$=19.8 K. We identify two prominent transitions as a function of temperature. The first one at 280 K involves marked changes of the electronic and the lattice response that are indicative of charge ordering in the CoO$_{2}$ layers. The second transition coincides with T$_{N}$=19.8 K and reveals a sizeable spin-charge coupling. The data are discussed in terms of charge ordering and formation of magneto-polarons due to a charge-induced spin-state transition of adjacent Co$^{3+}$ ions.

Charge dynamics of t-J model and anomalous bond-stretching phonons in cuprates

The density response of a doped Mott-Hubbard insulator is discussed starting from the t-J model in a slave boson 1/N representation. In leading order O(1) the density fluctuation spectra $N({\bf q},ω)$ are determined by an undamped collective mode at large momentum transfer, in striking disagreement with results obtained by exact diagonalization, which reveal a very broad dispersive peak, reminescent of strong spin-charge coupling. The 1/N corrections introduce the polaron character of the bosonic holes moving in a uniform RVB background. The resulting $N({\bf q},ω)$ captures all features observed in diagonalization studies, fulfills the appropriate sum rules, and apart from the broadening of the collective mode shows a new low energy feature at the energy $χJ+δt$ related to the polaron motion in the spinon background. It is further shown that the low energy structure, which is particularly pronounced in $(π,0)$ direction, describes the strong renormalization and anomalous damping of the highest bond-stretching phonons in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$.

Magnetic neutron scattering study of YVO3: Evidence for an orbital Peierls state

Neutron spectroscopy has revealed a highly unusual magnetic structure and dynamics in YVO$_3$, an insulating pseudocubic perovskite that undergoes a series of temperature induced phase transitions between states with different spin and orbital ordering patterns. A good description of the neutron data is obtained by a theoretical analysis of the spin and orbital correlations of a realistic one-dimensional model. This leads to the tentative identification of one of the phases of YVO$_3$ with the ``orbital Peierls state'', a theoretically proposed many-body state comprised of orbital singlet bonds.

Entropy Driven Dimerization in a One-Dimensional Spin-Orbital Model

We study a new version of the one-dimensional spin-orbital model with spins S=1 relevant to cubic vanadates. At small Hund's coupling J_H we discover dimerization in a pure electronic system solely due to a dynamical spin-orbital coupling. Above a critical value J_H, a uniform ferromagnetic state is stabilized at zero temperature. More surprisingly, we observe a temperature driven dimerization of the ferrochain, which occurs due to a large entropy released by dimer states. This dynamical dimerization seems to be the mechanism driving the peculiar intermediate phase of YVO_3.

Magnetic Order and Dynamics in an Orbitally Degenerate Ferromagnetic Insulator

Neutron scattering was used to determine the spin structure and the magnon spectrum of the Mott--Hubbard insulator YTiO$_3$. The magnetic structure is complex, comprising substantial G-type and A-type antiferromagnetic components in addition to the predominant ferromagnetic component. The magnon spectrum, on the other hand, is gapless and nearly isotropic. We show that these findings are inconsistent with the orbitally ordered states thus far proposed for YTiO$_3$ and discuss general implications for a theoretical description of exchange interactions in orbitally degenerate systems.

Order from disorder: Quantum spin gap in magnon spectra of LaTiO_3

A theory of the anisotropic superexchange and low energy spin excitations in a Mott insulator with t_{2g} orbital degeneracy is presented. We observe that the spin-orbit coupling induces frustrating Ising-like anisotropy terms in the spin Hamiltonian, which invalidate noninteracting spin wave theory. The frustration of classical states is resolved by an order from disorder mechanism, which selects a particular direction of the staggered moment and generates a quantum spin gap. The theory explains well the observed magnon gaps in LaTiO_3. As a test case, a specific prediction is made on the splitting of magnon branches at certain momentum directions.

Density response of the t-J model and renormalization of breathing and half-breathing phonon modes: A slave-fermion calculation

The density fluctuation spectrum $N({\bf k},ω)$ is calculated for the t-J model in the low-doping regime using a slave-fermion method for the constrained fermions. The obtained results for $N({\bf k},ω)$ are in good agreement with diagonalization results. The density response is characterized by incoherent, momentum dependent spectral functions reaching up to energies $\sim 8t$ and a low-energy structure at energy $\sim J$ due to transitions in the quasiparticle band. $N({\bf k},ω)$ is shown to lead to a strong renormalization of planar bond-streching and breathing phonon modes with a large phonon linewidth at intermediate momenta caused by the low-energy response. Our results are consistent with recent neutron scattering data, showing the peculiar behavior of these modes.

Density response of cuprates and renormalization of breathing phonons

We analyse the dynamical density fluctuation spectra for cuprates starting from the $t-J$ model in a slave-boson 1/N representation. The results obtained are consistent with diagonalization studies and show novel low-energy structure on the energy scale $J+δt$ due to the correlated motion of holes in a RVB spin liquid. The low-energy response implies an anomalous renormalization of several phonon modes. Here we discuss the renormalization of the highest breathing phonons in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$.

Spin Order due to Orbital Fluctuations: Cubic Vanadates

We investigate the highly frustrated spin and orbital superexchange interactions in cubic vanadates. The fluctuations of $t_{2g}$ orbitals trigger a {\it novel mechanism of ferromagnetic interactions} between spins S=1 of V$^{3+}$ ions along one of the cubic directions which operates already in the absence of Hund's rule exchange $J_H$, and leads to the C-type antiferromagnetic phase in LaVO$_3$. The Jahn-Teller effect can stabilize the orbital ordering and the G-type antiferromagnetic phase at low temperatures, but large entropy due to orbital fluctuations favors again the C-phase at higher temperatures, as observed in YVO$_3$.

Orbital liquid in three dimensional Mott insulator: $LaTiO_3$

We present a theory of spin and orbital states in Mott insulator $LaTiO_3$. The spin-orbital superexchange interaction between $d^1(t_{2g})$ ions in cubic crystal suffers from a pathological degeneracy of orbital states at classical level. Quantum effects remove this degeneracy and result in the formation of the coherent ground state, in which the orbital moment of $t_{2g}$ level is fully quenched. We find a finite gap for orbital excitations. Such a disordered state of local degrees of freedom on unfrustrated, simple cubic lattice is highly unusual. Orbital liquid state naturally explains observed anomalies of $LaTiO_3$.

Theory of anomalous magnon softening in ferromagnetic manganites

In metallic manganites with low Curie temperatures, a peculiar softening of the magnon spectrum close to the magnetic zone boundary has experimentally been observed. Here we present a theory of the renormalization of the magnetic excitation spectrum in colossal magnetoresistance compounds. The theory is based on the modulation of magnetic exchange bonds by the orbital degree of freedom of double-degenerate e_g electrons. The model considered is an orbitally degenerate double-exchange system coupled to Jahn-Teller active phonons which we treat in the limit of strong onsite repulsions. Charge and coupled orbital-lattice fluctuations are identified as the main origin of the unusual softening of the magnetic spectrum.
