Convergence of the enhancement of the effective mass under pressure and magnetic field in heavy-fermion compounds: CeRu2Si2, CeRh2Si2, and CeIn3

Emphasis is given on the observation of a convergence to a critical value of the effective mass of a heavy fermion compound by tuning it through a quantum instability either by applying pressure or magnetic field from an antiferromagnetic (AF) to a paramagnetic (PM) ground state. Macroscopic and microscopic results are discussed and the main message is to rush to the discovery of an ideal material whose Fermi surface could be fully observed on both sides of each quantum phase transition.

Observation of the J-sheet of the Fermi surface of YbRh2Si2

We report a previously unobserved quantum oscillation frequency in YbRh2Si2. This is the first quantum oscillation that can definitely be assigned to the larger of the two major sheets of the Fermi surface predicted by band structure calculations. Previously observed frequencies were interpreted in terms of a large Fermi surface, which includes the Yb 4f-hole in the Fermi volume, that has been so strongly spin-split that it closely resembles the small Fermi surface, which does not include the Yb 4f -hole in the Fermi volume. The new frequency can also be incorporated into this picture, however there are some indications that the a need for more advanced energy band calculations.

Pressure-phase diagram of UCoGe by ac-susceptibility and resistivity measurements

UCoGe is one of the few compounds showing the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity at ambient pressure. With T_Curie = 3 K and T_SC = 0.6 K it is near a quantum phase transition; the pressure needed to suppress the magnetism is slightly higher than 1 GPa. We report simultaneous resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements under pressure on a polycrystal with very large single-crystalline domains and a resistivity ratio of about 6. Both methods confirm the phase diagram established before by resistivity measurements on a polycrystal. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed for P approximately 1.2 GPa. Astonishingly, the superconductivity persists at pressures up to at least 2.4 GPa. In other superconducting and ferromagnetic heavy fermion compounds like UGe2 and URhGe, the superconducting state is situated only inside the larger ferromagnetic region. Therefore, UCoGe seems to be the first example where superconductivity extends from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic region.

Mass Enhancement and Reentrant Ground State in Magnetic Field

Three different cases of magnetic field reentrant ground states in heavy fermion systems, URhGe, UGe$_2$ and CeRhIn$_5$ recently studied in Grenoble, are discussed. URhGe is a ferromagnetic superconductor with reentrace of superconductivity under magnetic field ($H$) which is associated to the spin reorientation field. UGe$_2$ is a ferromagnetic superconductor with an enhancement of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ of superconductivity at its metamagnetic transition between 2 ferromagnetic phases. CeRhIn$_5$ is a superconductor with $H$ reentrant antiferromagnetism. We analyze the links between the $H$ enhancement of the different contributions to the effective mass and the field reentrant phase.

Magnetic-Field Dependence of the YbRh2Si2 Fermi Surface

Magnetic-field-induced changes of the Fermi surface play a central role in theories of the exotic quantum criticality of YbRh2Si2. We have carried out de Haas-van Alphen measurements in the magnetic-field range 8 T <= H <= 16 T, and directly observe field dependence of the extremal Fermi surface areas. Our data support the theory that a low-field "large" Fermi surface, including the Yb 4f quasihole, is increasingly spin split until a majority-spin branch undergoes a Lifshitz transition and disappears at H0 ~ 10 T, without requiring 4f localization at H0.

The high-field Fermi surface of YbRh2Si2

We present quantum oscillation measurements of YbRh2Si2 at magnetic fields above the Kondo-suppression scale H0 ~ 10 T. Comparison with electronic structure calculations is complicated because the "small" Fermi surface, where the Yb 4f-quasi-hole is not contributing to the Fermi volume, and "large" Fermi surface, where the Yb 4f-quasi-hole is contributing to the Fermi volume, are related by a rigid Fermi energy shift. This means that spin-split branches of the large Fermi surface can look like unsplit branches of the small surface, and vice-versa. Thus, although the high-field angle dependence of the experimentally-measured oscillation frequencies most resembles the electronic structure prediction for the small Fermi surface, this may instead be a branch of the spin-split large Fermi surface.

Skutterudite Results Shed Light on Heavy Fermion Physics

Only few selected examples among the great diversity of anomalous rare earth skutterudite are reviewed. Focus is first given on PrFe4P12 in comparison with URu2Si2. For PrFe4P12, great progress has been made on determining the nature of the order parameter (OP). A non magnetic order parameter with a multipolar component emerges here while for URu2Si2 the nature of the so-called hidden order remains mysterious. The two systems have several similarities in their temperature--pressure (T, P) and magnetic field--temperature (H, T) phase diagrams, in their spin dynamics, in their nesting character and in their high sensitivity to impurities. Advances on one side must stimulate new views on the other. Besides general considerations on the choice of the OP, a simple basic problem is the treatment of the Kondo coupling in a system with low charge carrier number for the cases of uncompensated and compensated semi-metal. An interesting problem is also the possible decoupling between exciton modes and itinerant carriers.

Collapse of antiferromagnetism in CeRh2Si2 : volume versus entropy

The thermal expansion of the heavy fermion compound CeRh2Si2 has been measured under pressure as a function of temperature using strain gages. A large anomaly associated to the Neel temperature has been detected even above the suspected critical pressure Pc = 1.05 GPa where no indication of antiferromagnetism has been observed in calorimetry experiments sensitive to the entropy change. An unexpected feature is the pressure slowdown of the antiferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition by comparison to the fast pressure collapse predicted for homogeneous first order quantum phase transition with one unique pressure singularity at Pc. A large pressure dependance is observed in the anisotropy of the thermal expansion measured parallel or perpendicular to the c axis of this tetragonal crystal. The Fermi surface reconstruction associated to the first order transition produces quite different pressure response in the transport scattering measured along different crystallographic directions. A brief discussion is made on other examples of first order quantum transitions in strongly correlated electronic systems : MnSi and CeCoIn5.

ESR of YbRh2Si2 and 174YbRh2Si2 : local and itinerant properties

Below the Kondo temperature the heavy Fermion compound YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ shows a well defined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) with local Yb$^{3+}$ properties. We report a detailed analysis of the ESR intensity which gives information on the number of ESR active centers relative to the ESR of well localized Yb$^{3+}$ in YPd$_3$:Yb. The ESR lineshape is investigated regarding contributions from itinerant centers. From the ESR of monoisotopic $^{174}$YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ we could exclude unresolved hyperfine contributions to the lineshape.

Magnetic structure of CeRhIn$_{5}$ under magnetic field

The magnetically ordered ground state of CeRhIn$_{5}$ at ambient pressure and zero magnetic field is an incomensurate helicoidal phase with the propagation vector $\bf{k}$=(1/2, 1/2, 0.298) and the magnetic moment in the basal plane of the tetragonal structure. We determined by neutron diffraction the two different magnetically ordered phases of CeRhIn$_{5}$ evidenced by bulk measurements under applied magnetic field in its basal plane. The low temperature high magnetic phase corresponds to a sine-wave structure of the magnetization being commensurate with $\bf{k}$=(1/2, 1/2, 1/4). At high temperature, the phase is incommensurate with $\bf{k}$=(1/2, 1/2, 0.298) and a possible small ellipticity. The propagation vector of this phase is the same as the one of the zero-field structure.

Unconventional resistivity at the border of metallic antiferromagnetism in NiS2

We report low-temperature and high-pressure measurements of the electrical resistivity ρ(T) of the antiferromagnetic compound NiS_2 in its high-pressure metallic state. The form of ρ(T) suggests that metallic antiferromagnetism in NiS_2 is quenched at a critical pressure p_c=76+-5 kbar. Near p_c the temperature variation of ρ(T) is similar to that observed in NiS_{2-x}Se_x near the critical composition x=1 where the Neel temperature vanishes at ambient pressure. In both cases ρ(T) varies approximately as T^{1.5} over a wide range below 100 K. However, on closer analysis the resistivity exponent in NiS_2 exhibits an undulating variation with temperature not seen in NiSSe (x=1). This difference in behaviour may be due to the effects of spin-fluctuation scattering of charge carriers on cold and hot spots of the Fermi surface in the presence of quenched disorder, which is higher in NiSSe than in stoichiometric NiS_2.

Interplay between different states in heavy fermion physics

Calorimetry experiments under high pressure were used to clarify the interplay between different states such as superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in CeRhIn5, spin density wave and large moment antiferromagnetism in URu2Si2. Evidences are given on the re-entrance of antiferromagnetism under magnetic field in the superconducting phase of CeRhIn5 up to pc = 2.5 GPa where the Neel temperature will collapse in the absence of superconductivity. For URu2Si2 measurements up to 10 GPa support strongly the coexistence of spin density wave and large moment antiferromagnetism at high pressures.

Observation of Spin Susceptibility Enhancement in the Possible FFLO State in CeCoIn$_5$

We report $^{115}$In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ in the vicinity of the superconducting critical field $H_{c2}$ for a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $\hat c$-axis. A possible inhomogeneous superconducting state, Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO), is stabilized in this part of the phase diagram. In 11 T applied magnetic field, we observe clear signatures of the two phase transitions: the higher temperature one to the homogeneous superconducting state and the lower temperature phase transition to a FFLO state. It is found that the spin susceptibility in the putative FFLO state is significantly enhanced as compared to the value in a homogeneous superconducting state. Implications of this finding for the nature of the low temperature phase are discussed.

Field-induced non-Fermi-liquid resistivity of stoichiometric YbAgGe single crystals

We have investigated hexagonal YbAgGe down to 70 mK by measuring the magnetic-field and temperature dependence of the resistivity rho of single crystals in fields up to 14 T. Our results extend the H-T phase diagram to the lowest temperatures for H applied in the basal plane and along the c-axis. In particular, critical fields for the suppression of several magnetic phases are determined. The temperature dependence of rho(T) is unusual: whereas at low H, rho(T) reveals a temperature exponent n>=2, we find 1<=n<1.5 and strong enhancement of the temperature dependence of rho(T) close to and beyond the highest critical field for each field direction. For H applied in the basal plane, at high fields a conventional T^2 dependence of rho(T) is reached above 10 T accompanied by an approach to saturation of a strong drop in the residual resistivity. YbAgGe appears to be one of few Yb-based stoichiometric systems, where quantum-critical behaviour may be induced by a magnetic field.

Coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in CeRhIn5 under high pressure and magnetic field

We report on detailed ac calorimetry measurements under high pressure and magnetic field of CeRhIn5. Under hydrostatic pressure the antiferromagnetic order vanishes near p_c*=2 GPa due to a first order transition. Superconductivity is found for pressures above 1.5 GPa inside the magnetic ordered phase. However, the superconductivity differ from the pure homogeneous superconducting ground state above 2 GPa. The application of an external magnetic field H || ab induces a transition inside the superconducting state above pc* which is strongly related to the re-entrance of the antiferromagnetism with field. This field-induced supplementary state vanishes above the quantum critical point in this system. The analogy to CeCoIn5 is discussed.

Valence and magnetic ordering in intermediate valence compounds : TmSe versus SmB6

The intermediate valent systems TmSe and SmB6 have been investigated up to 16 and 18 GPa by ac microcalorimetry with a pressure (p) tuning realized in situ at low temperature. For TmSe, the transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator for p<3 GPa to an antiferromagnetic metal at higher pressure has been confirmed. A drastic change in the p variation of the Neel temperature (Tn) is observed at 3 GPa. In the metallic phase (p>3 GPa), Tn is found to increase linearly with p. A similar linear p increase of Tn is observed for the quasitrivalent compound TmS which is at ambiant pressure equivalent to TmSe at p=7 GPa. In the case of SmB6 long range magnetism has been detected above p=8 GPa, i.e. at a pressure slightly higher than the pressure of the insulator to metal transition. However a homogeneous magnetic phase occurs only above 10 GPa. The magnetic and electronic properties are related to the renormalization of the 4f wavefunction either to the divalent or the trivalent configurations. As observed in SmS, long range magnetism in SmB6 occurs already far below the pressure where a trivalent Sm3+ state will be reached. It seems possible, to describe roughly the physical properties of the intermediate valence equilibrium by assuming formulas for the Kondo lattice temperature depending on the valence configuration. Comparison is also made with the appearance of long range magnetism in cerium and ytterbium heavy fermion compounds.

Magnetism and superconductivity of heavy fermion matter

The interplay of magnetism and unconventional superconductivity (d singlet wave or p triplet wave) in strongly correlated electronic system (SCES) is discussed with recent examples found in heavy fermion compounds. A short presentation is given on the formation of the heavy quasiparticle with the two sources of a local and intersite enhancement for the effective mass. Two cases of the coexistence or repulsion of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity are given with CeIn3 and CeCoIn5. A spectacular example is the emergence of superconductivity in relatively strong itinerant ferromagnets UGe2 and URhGe. The impact of heavy fermion matter among other SCES as organic conductor or high Tc oxide is briefly pointed out.

Spin-fluctuation dominated electrical transport of Ni3Al at high pressure

We present the first study of a magnetic quantum phase transition in the itinerant-electron ferromagnet Ni3Al at high pressures. Electrical resistivity measurements in a diamond anvil cell at hydrostatic pressures up to 100 kbar and temperatures as low as 50 mK indicate that the Curie temperature collapses towards absolute zero at a critical pressure pc=82(2) kbar. Over wide ranges in pressure and temperature, both in the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states, the temperature variation of the resistivity is found to deviate from the conventional Fermi-liquid form. We consider the extent to which this deviation can be understood in terms of a mean-field model of enhanced spin fluctuations on the border of ferromagnetism in three dimensions.
