Infrared spectroscopy of the charge ordering transition in Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$

We report infrared spectra of a Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_2$ single crystal which exhibits a sharp metal-insulator transition near 50 K due to the formation of charge ordering. In comparison with x=0.7 and 0.85 compounds, we found that the spectral weight associated with the conducting carriers at high temperature increases systematically with decreasing Na contents. The charge ordering transition only affects the optical spectra below 1000 cm$^{-1}$. A hump near 800 cm$^{-1}$ develops below 100 K, which is accompanied by the appearance of new lattice modes as well as the strong anti-resonance feature of phonon spectra. At lower temperature $T_{co}$, an optical gap develops at the magnitude of 2$Δ\approx3.5k_BT_{co}$, evidencing an insulating charge density wave ground state. Our experimental results and analysis unequivocally point towards the importance of charge ordering instability and strong electron-phonon interaction in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ system.

Optical study on doped polyaniline composite films

Localization driven by disorder has a strong influence on the conducting property of conducting polymer. A class of authors hold the opinion that disorder in the material is homogeneous and conducting polymer is disordered metal close to Anderson-Mott Metal-Insulator transition, while others treat the disorder as inhomogeneous and have the conclusion that conducting polymer is a composite of ordered metallic regions and disordered insulating regions. The morphology of conducting polymers is an important factor that have influence on the type and extent of disorder. Different protonic acids used as dopants and moisture have affection on polymer chain arrangement and interchain interactions. A PANI-CSA film, two PANI-CSA/PANI-DBSA composite films with different dopants ratio, and one of the composite films with different moisture content are studied. Absolute reflectivity measurements are performed on the films. Optical conductivity and the real part of dielectric function are calculated by Kramers-Kronig(KK) relations. $σ_1(ω)$ and $ε_1(ω)$ derivate from simple Drude model in low frequency range and tendencies of the three sample are different and non-monotonic. The Localization Modified Drude model(LMD) in the framework of Anderson-Mott theory can not give a good fit to the experimental data. By introducing a distribution of relaxation time into LMD, reasonable fits for all three samples are obtained. This result supports the inhomogeneous picture.

The transport, ultrasound, and structural properties for the charge ordered Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<=x<=0.875) manganites

The effects of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect on the crystal structure and the stability of the charge ordered (CO) state were studied by measurements of powder X-ray diffraction, resistivity, and ultrasound for Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<=x<=0.875). Powder X-ray diffraction revealed a change of the crystal structure from tetragonally compressed to tetragonally elongated orthorhombic between x=0.75 and x=0.8 in the CO state, resulting from the crossover of the cooperative Jahn-Teller vibration mode from Q2 to Q3. The relative stiffening of the ultrasound (DeltaV/V) reflecting the magnitude of the cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion in the CO state increases with increasing x from 0.5 to 0.625, reaching the largest and being almost x-independence for 0.625<x<0.8, and drops steeply with further increase of x. Coincident with the variation of the DeltaV/V with x, the stability of the CO state reflected by the magnetoresistance effect increases with increasing x from 0.5 to 0.625, reaching the most stable for 0.625<x<0.825, and becomes unstable with further increase of x. These features demonstrate that the cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion is one of the key ingredients in understanding the essential physics of the CO state in manganites.

Optical study of the metal-insulator transition in CuIr$_2$S$_4$ crystals

We present measurements of the optical spectra on single crystals of spinel-type compound \cis. This material undergoes a sharp metal-insulator transition at 230 K. Upon entering the insulating state, the optical conductivity shows an abrupt spectral weight transfer and an optical excitation gap opens. In the metallic phase, Drude components in low frequencies and an interband transition peak at $\sim 2 eV$ are observed. In the insulating phase, a new peak emerges around $0.5 eV$. This peak is attributed to the transition of electrons from the occupied Ir$^{3+}$ $t_{2g}$ state to upper Ir$^{4+}$ $t_{2g}$ subband resulting from the dimerization of Ir$^{4+}$ ions in association with the simultaneous formations of Ir$^{3+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ octamers as recently revealed by the x-ray diffraction experiment. Our experiments indicate that the band structure is reconstructed in the insulating phase due to the sudden structural transition.

The role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the charge ordered La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<=x<=0.87) manganites

Based on the magnetoresistance, magnetization, ultrasound, and crystallographic data, we studied the role of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in the charge ordered (CO) state for La1-xCaxMnO3. We found that, with increasing the fraction of Q3 mode of Jahn-Teller distortion and decreasing that of Q2 mode in the CO state, the magnetic structure evolves from CE-type to C-type and the orbital ordering changes from 3d(x2-r2)/3d(y2-r2)-type to 3d(x2-z2)-type, with the strength of ferromagnetism and the phase separation tendency being suppressed. At the same time, the stability of the CO state and the cooperative Jahn-Teller lattice distortion increase. These effects imply that the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect with different vibration modes is the key ingredient in understanding the essential physics of the CO state.

Insulator-metal transition shift related to magnetic polarons in La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3

The magnetic transport properties have been measured for La0.67-xYxCa0.33MnO3 (0 <= x <= 0.14) system. It was found that the transition temperature Tp almost linearly moves to higher temperature as H increases. Electron spin resonance confirms that above Tp, there exist ferromagnetic clusters. From the magnetic polaron point of view, the shift of Tp vs. H was understood, and it was estimated that the size of the magnetic polaron is of 9.7~15.4 angstrom which is consistent with the magnetic correlation length revealed by the small-angle neutron-scattering technique. The transport properties at temperatures higher than Tp conform to the variable-range hopping mechanism.

Internal friction and Jahn-Teller effect in the charge-ordered La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.87)

The Jahn-Teller effect in the charge-ordered (CO) state for La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.87) was studied by measuring the low-temperature powder x-ray diffraction, internal friction, and shear modulus. We find that the electron-lattice interaction with the static Jahn-Teller distortion is the strongest near x=0.75 in the CO state. It was particularly observed that a crossover of the Jahn-Teller vibration mode from Q2 to Q3 near x=0.75 induces crossovers of the crystal structure from tetragonally compressed to tetragonally elongated orthorhombic, and of the magnetic structure from CE-type to C-type near x=0.75. The experimental results give strong evidence that the Jahn-Teller effect not only plays a key role in stabilizing the CO state, but also determines the magnetic and crystal structures in the CO state for La1-xCaxMnO3.

Jahn-Teller effect and stability of the charge-ordered state in La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.9) manganites

The longitudinal ultrasonic sound velocity and attenuation, the resistivity, and lattice parameters were studied as a function of temperature from 30 K to 300 K in La1-xCaxMnO3 (0.5<x<0.9). For all the samples, a dramatic stiffening of the sound velocity below the charge ordering transition temperature TCO was directly driven by distinct changes of the lattice parameters due to the formation of long range ordering of Jahn-Teller distorted MnO6 octahedra. The relative change of the sound velocity (DeltaV/V) below TCO depends on the Ca concentration x and reaches the maximum at x=0.75, implying that the effective strength of electron-lattice interaction with the Jahn-Teller distortion is the strongest at x=0.75 and hence the charge ordered state is mostly stabilized near x=0.75 and insensitive to the application of a magnetic field, which is supported by the charge transport properties under high magnetic fields up to 14T.

Calculation of levitation forces in permanent-superconductor systems

The magnetic levitation forces of a superconducting disk (SC) levitated by a cylindrical permanent magnet (PM) have been calculated from first principles for superconductors with finite thickness. The current $j(ρ,z)$ and field $B(ρ,z)$ profiles in the SC in the non-uniform magnetic field generated by the PM have been derived. The levitation force is observed to depend non-linearly on the critical current density $j_c$ and on the thickness of the SC. The flux creep is described by a current-voltage law $E(j)=E_c(j/j_c)^n$, from which we show that the levitation force depends on the speed at which the PM approaches or recedes from the SC, which accounts for the experimentally observed force creep phenomenon. The stiffness of the system has been derived by calculating the minor force loops. The numerical results reproduce many of the features exhibited by experiments.

Carbon Nanotubes Synthesized in Channels of Alpo4-5 Single Crystals : First X-Ray Scattering Investigations

Following the synthesis of aligned single-wall carbon nanotubes in the channels of AlPO4-5 zeolite single crystals, we present the first X-ray diffraction and diffuse scattering results. They can be analysed in terms of a partial filling of the zeolite channels by nanotubes with diameter around 4A. The possible selection of only one type of nanotube during the synthesis, due to the constraints imposed by the zeolite host, is discussed.

Boson Mapping and Nonlinear Response of Type-II Superconductors

The vortices in a high-Tc superconductor with strong correlated pinning centers have been studied numerically using the mapping to charged bosons in two-dimensions(2D) and the Monte-Carlo algorithm. Considering the viscous dissipation of moving vortices we derived a nonlinear voltage response expression which describes different regimes and their crossover uniformly. This equation accords with experimental results.

Properties of Hadrons in the Nuclear Medium

This review is devoted to the discussion of hadron properties in the nuclear medium and its relation to the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. Special attention is given to disentangle in-medium effects due to conventional many-body interactions from those due to the change of the chiral condensate. In particular, we shall discuss medium effects on the Goldstone bosons (pion, kaon and eta), the vector mesons (rho, omega, phi), and the nucleon. Also, for each proposed in-medium effect the experimental consequence and results will be reviewed.

Breathing Spots in a Reaction-Diffusion System

A quasi-2-dimensional stationary spot in a disk-shaped chemical reactor is observed to bifurcate to an oscillating spot when a control parameter is increased beyond a critical value. Further increase of the control parameter leads to the collapse and disappearance of the spot. Analysis of a bistable activator-inhibitor model indicates that the observed behavior is a consequence of interaction of the front with the boundary near a parity breaking front bifurcation.
