Magnetic field geometry of an unusual cometary cloud Gal 110-13

We carried out optical polarimetry of an isolated cloud, Gal 110-13, to map the plane-of-the-sky magnetic field geometry. The main aim of the study is to understand the most plausible mechanism responsible for the unusual cometary shape of the cloud in the context of its magnetic field geometry. When unpolarized starlight passes through the intervening interstellar dust grains that are aligned with their short axes parallel to the local magnetic field, it gets linearly polarized. The plane-of-the-sky magnetic field component can therefore be traced by doing polarization measurements of background stars projected on clouds. Because the light in the optical wavelength range is most efficiently polarized by the dust grains typically found in the outer layers of the molecular clouds, optical polarimetry enables us to trace the magnetic field geometry of the outer layers of the clouds. We made R-band polarization measurements of 207 stars in the direction of Gal 110-13. The distance of Gal 110-13 was determined as $\sim450\pm80$ pc using our polarization and 2MASS near-infrared data. The foreground interstellar contribution was removed from the observed polarization values by observing a number of stars located in the vicinity of Gal 110-13 which has Hipparcos parallax measurements. The plane-of-the-sky magnetic field lines are found to be well ordered and aligned with the elongated structure of Gal 110-13. Using structure function analysis, we estimated the strength of the plane-of-the-sky component of the magnetic field as $\sim25μ$G. Based on our results and comparing them with those from simulations, we conclude that compression by the ionization fronts from 10 Lac is the most plausible cause of the comet-like morphology of Gal 110-13 and of the initiation of subsequent star formation.

Magnetic field structure around cores with very low luminosity objects

[Abridged] We carried out optical polarimetry of five dense cores, (IRAM 04191, L1521F, L328, L673-7, and L1014) which are found to harbour VeLLO. This study was conducted mainly to understand the role played by the magnetic field in the formation of very low and substellar mass range objects using optical polarisation. The angular offsets between the envelope magnetic field direction (inferred from optical polarisation measurements) and the outflow position angles from the VeLLOs in IRAM 04191, L1521F, L328, L673-7, and L1014 are found to be 84$^\circ$, 53$^\circ$, 24$^\circ$, 08$^\circ$, and 15$^\circ$, respectively. The mean value of the offsets for all the five clouds is $\sim37^\circ$. If we exclude IRAM 04191, the mean value reduces to become $\sim25^\circ$. In IRAM 04191, the offset between the projected envelope and the inner magnetic field (inferred from the submillimetre data from SCUPOL) is found to be $\sim68^\circ$. The inner magnetic field, however, is found to be nearly aligned with the projected position angles of the minor axis, the rotation axis of the cloud, and the outflow from the IRAM 04191-IRS. We discuss a possible explanation for the nearly perpendicular orientation between the envelope and core scale magnetic fields in IRAM04191. The angular offset between the envelope magnetic field direction and the minor axis of IRAM 04191, L1521F, L673-7, and L1014 are 82$^\circ$, 60$^\circ$, 47$^\circ$, and 55$^\circ$, respectively. The mean value of the offsets between the envelope magnetic field and the minor axis position angles for the four cores is found to be $\sim60^\circ$. The results obtained from our study on the limited sample of five cores with VeLLOs show that the outflows in three of them tend to nearly align with the envelope magnetic field.

A Study of starless dark cloud LDN 1570: Distance, Dust properties and Magnetic field geometry

We wish to map the magnetic field geometry and to study the dust properties of the starless cloud, L1570, using multi-wavelength optical polarimetry and photometry of the stars projected on the cloud. We made R-band imaging polarimetry of the stars projected on a cloud, L1570, to trace the magnetic field orientation. We also made multi-wavelength polarimetric and photometric observations to constrain the properties of dust in L1570. We estimated a distance of 394 +/- 70 pc to the cloud using 2MASS JHKs colours. Using the values of the Serkowski parameters namely $σ_{1}$, $\bar ε$, λmax and the position of the stars on near infrared color-color diagram, we identified 13 stars that could possibly have intrinsic polarization and/or rotation in their polarization angles. One star, 2MASS J06075075+1934177, which is a B4Ve spectral type, show the presence of diffuse interstellar bands in the spectrum apart from showing Hα line in emission. There is an indication for the presence of slightly bigger dust grains towards L1570 on the basis of the dust grain size-indicators such as λmax and Rv values. The magnetic field lines are found to be parallel to the cloud structures seen in the 250μm images (also in 8μm and 12μm shadow images) of L1570. Based on the magnetic field geometry, the cloud structure and the complex velocity structure, we believe that L1570 is in the process of formation due to the converging flow material mediated by the magnetic field lines. Structure function analysis showed that in the L1570 cloud region the large scale magnetic fields are stronger when compared with the turbulent component of magnetic fields. The estimated magnetic field strengths suggest that the L1570 cloud region is sub-critical and hence could be strongly supported by the magnetic field lines.

Magnetic fields in cometary globules - IV. LBN 437

We present results of our $R-$band polarimetry of a cometary globule, LBN 437 (Gal96-15, $\ell$ $=$ 96$\degree$, \textit{b} $=-15\degree$), to study magnetic field geometry of the cloud. We estimated a distance of $360\pm65$ pc to LBN 437 (also one additional cloud, CB 238) using near-IR photometric method. Foreground contribution to the observed polarisation values was subtracted by making polarimetric observations of stars that are located in the direction of the cloud and with known distances from the Hipparcos parallax measurements. The magnetic field geometry of LBN 437 is found to follow the curved shape of the globule head. This could be due to the drag that the magnetic field lines could have experienced because of the ionisation radiation from the same exciting source that caused the cometary shape of the cloud. The orientation of the outflow from the Herbig A4e star, LkH$α$ 233 (or V375 Lac), located at the head of LBN 437, is found to be parallel to both the initial (prior to the ionising source was turned on) ambient magnetic field (inferred from a star HD 214243 located just in front of the cloud) and the Galactic plane.

Pre-main sequence variable stars in young open cluster NGC 1893

We present results of multi-epoch (fourteen nights during 2007-2010) $V$-band photometry of the cluster NGC 1893 region to identify photometric variable stars in the cluster. The study identified a total of 53 stars showing photometric variability. The members associated with the region are identified on the basis of spectral energy distribution, $J-H/H-K$ two colour diagram and $V/V-I$ colour-magnitude diagram. The ages and masses of the majority of pre-main-sequence sources are found to be $\lesssim$ 5 Myr and in the range 0.5 $\lesssim$ $M/M_{\odot}$ $\lesssim$ 4, respectively. These pre-main-sequence sources hence could be T Tauri stars. We also determined the physical parameters like disk mass and accretion rate from the spectral energy distribution of these T Tauri stars. The periods of majority of the T Tauri stars range from 0.1 to 20 day. The brightness of Classical T Tauri stars is found to vary with larger amplitude in comparison to Weak line T Tauri stars. It is found that the amplitude decreases with increase in mass, which could be due to the dispersal of disks of massive stars.

Distances to dense cores that contain Very Low Luminosity Objects

The aim of the paper is to estimate distances to dense molecular cores that harbour Very Low Luminosity Objects (VeLLO) detected by Spitzer Space Telescope and to confirm their VeLLO nature. The cloud distances are estimated using near-IR photometric method. We use a technique that provides spectral classification of stars lying towards the fields containing the clouds into main sequence and giants. In this technique, the observed (J-H) and (H-Ks) colours are dereddened simultaneously using trial values of A_V and a normal interstellar extinction law. The best fit of the dereddened colours to the intrinsic colours giving a minimum value of chi^{2} then yields the corresponding spectral type and A_V for the star. The main sequence stars, thus classified, are then utilized in an A_V versus distance plot to bracket the cloud distances. The typical error in the estimation of distances to the clouds are found to be ~18%.We estimated distances to seven cloud cores, IRAM04191, L1521F, BHR111, L328, L673-7, L1014, and L1148 using the above method. These clouds contain VeLLO candidates. The estimated distances to the cores are found to be 127\pm25 pc (IRAM04191), 136\pm36 pc (L1521F), 355\pm65 pc (BHR111), 217\pm30 pc (L328), 240\pm45 pc (L673-7), 258\pm50 pc (L1014), and 301\pm55 pc (L1148). We re-evaluated the internal luminosities of the VeLLOs discovered in these seven clouds using the distances estimated from this work. Except for L1014-IRS (L_{int}=0.15 L_{\odot}), all other VeLLO candidates are found to be consistent with the definition of a VeLLO (L_{int}<=0.1L_{\odot}). In addition to the cores that harbour VeLLO candidates, we also obtained distances to the clouds L323, L675, L676, CB 188, L1122, L1152, L1155, L1157 and L1158 which are located in the directions of the above seven cores. Towards L1521F and L1148 we found evidence of the presence of multiple dust layers.

Broad-band Optical Polarimetric Studies toward the Galactic young star cluster Be 59

We present multiwavelength optical linear polarimetric observations of 69 stars toward the young open cluster Be 59. The observations reveal the presence of three dust layers located at the distances of \sim300, \sim500 and \sim700 pc. The dust layers produce a total polarization Pv \sim 5.5 per cent. The mean values of polarization and polarization angles due to the dust layers are found to increase systematically with distance. We show that polarimetry in combination with the (U - B) - (B - V) colour-colour diagram yields a better identification of cluster members. The polarization measurements suggest that the polarization due the intra-cluster medium is \sim 2.2 per cent. An anomalous reddening law exists for the cluster region, indicating a relatively larger grain size than that in the diffuse ISM. The spatial variation of the polarization and E(B - V) is found to increase with radial distance from the cluster center, whereas the θv and λmax are found to decrease with increasing radial distance from the cluster center. About 40 per cent of cluster members show the signatures of either intrinsic polarization or rotation in their polarization angles. There is an indication that the star light of the cluster members might have been depolarized because of non-uniform alignment of dust grains in the foreground dust layers and in the intra-cluster medium.

A method to determine distances to molecular clouds using near-IR photometry

Aims: We aim to develop a method to determine distances to molecular clouds using JHK near-infrared photometry. Methods: The method is based on a technique that aids spectral classification of stars lying towards the fields containing the clouds into main sequence and giants. In this technique, the observed (J-H) and (H-K_s) colours are dereddened simultaneously using trial values of A V and a normal interstellar extinction law. The best fit of the dereddened colours to the intrinsic colours giving a minimum value of Chi^2 then yields the corresponding spectral type and A_V for the star. The main sequence stars, thus classified, are then utilized in an A V versus distance plot to bracket the cloud distances. Results: We applied the method to four clouds, L1517, Chamaeleon I, Lupus 3 and NGC 7023 and estimated their distances as 167+-30, 151+-28, 157+-29 and 408+-76 pc respectively, which are in good agreement with the previous distance estimations available in the literature

Multi-wavelength polarimetric study towards the open cluster NGC 1893

We present multi-wavelength linear polarimetric observations for 44 stars of the NGC 1893 young open cluster region along with V-band polarimetric observations of stars of other four open clusters located between l ~160 to ~175 degree. We found evidence for the presence of two dust layers located at a distance of ~170 pc and ~360 pc. The dust layers produce a polarization Pv ~2.2%. It is evident from the clusters studied in the present work that, in the Galactic longitude range l ~160 to 175 degree and within the Galactic plane (|b| < 2 degree), the polarization angles remain almost constant, with a mean ~163 degree and a dispersion of 6 degree. The small dispersion in polarization angle could be due to the presence of uniform dust layer beyond 1 kpc. Present observations reveal that in case of NGC 1893, the foreground two dust layers, in addition to the intracluster medium, seems to be responsible for the polarization effects. It is also found that towards the direction of NGC 1893, the dust layer that exists between 2-3 kpc has a negligible contribution towards the total observed polarization. The weighted mean for percentage of polarization (Pmax) and the wavelength at maximum polarization (λmax) are found to be 2.59 \pm 0.02% and 0.55 \pm 0.01 \mum respectively. The estimated mean value of λmax indicates that the average size of the dust grains within the cluster is similar to that in the general interstellar medium. The spatial variation of the polarization is found to decrease towards the outer region of the cluster. In the present work, we support the notion, as already has been shown in previous studies, that polarimetry, in combination with (U-B)/(B-V) colour-colour diagram, is a useful tool for identifying non-members in a cluster.

The IMF of stellar clusters: effects of accretion and feedback

(abridged) We develop a model which describes the coevolution of the mass function of dense cores and of the IMF in a protocluster clump. In the model, cores injected in the clump evolve under the effect of gas accretion. Accretion onto the cores follows a time-dependent accretion rate that describes accretion in a turbulent medium. Once the accretion timescales of cores exceed their contraction timescales, they are turned into stars. We include the effect of feedback by the newly formed massive stars through their stellar winds. A fraction of the wind's energy is assumed to counter gravity and disperse the gas from the protocluster and as a consequence, quench further star formation. The latter effect sets the final IMF of the cluster. We apply our model to a clump that is expected to resemble the progenitor clump of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). Our model is able to reproduce both the shape and normalization of the ONC's IMF and the mass function of dense cores in Orion. The complex features of the ONC's IMF,i.e., a shallow slope in the mass range ~0.3-2.5 Msol,a steeper slope in the mass range ~2.5-12 Msol, and a nearly flat tail at the high mass end are reproduced. The model predicts a 'rapid' star formation process with an age spread for the stars of 2.3 10^5 yr which is consistent with the fact that 80% of the ONC's stars have ages of <=0.3 Myr. The model predicts a primordial mass segregation with the most massive stars being born in the region between 2-4 times the core radius of the cluster. In parallel, the model also reproduces, simultaneously, the mass function of dense cores in Orion. We study the effects of varying the model parameters on the resulting IMF and show that the IMF of stellar clusters is expected to show significant variations, provided variations in the clumps and cores properties exist.

Stellar contents and star formation in the young open cluster Stock 8

We present $UBVI_c$ CCD photometry of the young open cluster Stock 8 with the aim to study the basic properties and star formation scenario in this region. The radius of the cluster is found to be $\sim 6^{\prime}$ ($\sim 3.6$ pc) and the reddening within the cluster region varies from $E(B-V)=0.40$ to 0.60 mag. The cluster is located at a distance of $2.05 \pm 0.10$ kpc. Using H$α$ slitless spectroscopy and 2MASS NIR data we identified H$α$ emission and NIR excess young stellar objects (YSOs), respectively. The colour-magnitude diagrams of these YSOs reveal that majority of these objects have ages between 1 to 5 Myr indicating a non-coeval star formation in the cluster. Massive stars in the cluster region reveal an average age of $\le$ 2 Myr. In the cluster region ($r \le 6^\prime$) the slope of the mass function (MF), $Γ$, in the mass range $\sim 1.0 \le M/M_\odot < 13.4$ can be represented by a power law having a slope of $-1.38\pm0.12$, which agrees well with Salpeter value (-1.35). In the mass range $0.3 \le M/M_\odot < 1.0$, the MF is also found to follow a power law with a shallower slope of $Γ= -0.58\pm 0.23$ indicating a break in the slope of the IMF at $\sim 1 M_\odot$. The slope of the $K$-band luminosity function for the cluster ($r \le 6^\prime$) is found to be $0.31\pm0.02$, which is smaller than the average value ($\sim$ 0.4) obtained for embedded star clusters. A significant number of YSOs are distributed along a Nebulous Stream towards the east side of the cluster. A small cluster is embedded in the Nebulous Stream. The YSOs lying in the Nebulous Stream and in the embedded cluster are found to be younger than the stars in the cluster Stock 8. It appears that star formation activity in the Nebulous Stream and embedded cluster may be independent from that of Stock 8.

Evolution of emission line activity in intermediate mass young stars

We present optical spectra of 45 intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with the multi-epoch spectroscopic and photometric data compiled for a large sample of these stars and ages estimated for individual stars by using pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks, we have studied the evolution of emission line activity in them. We find that, on average, the H_alpha emission line strength decreases with increasing stellar age in HAeBe stars, indicating that the accretion activity gradually declines during the PMS phase. This would hint at a relatively long-lived (a few Myr) process being responsible for the cessation of accretion in Herbig Ae/Be stars. We also find that the accretion activity in these stars drops substantially by ~ 3 Myr. This is comparable to the timescale in which most intermediate mass stars are thought to lose their inner disks, suggesting that inner disks in intermediate mass stars are dissipated rapidly after the accretion activity has fallen below a certain level. We, further find a relatively tight correlation between strength of the emission line and near-infrared excess due to inner disks in HAeBe stars, indicating that the disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars cannot be entirely passive. We suggest that this correlation can be understood within the frame work of the puffed-up inner rim disk models if the radiation from the accretion shock is also responsible for the disk heating.

Post-Outburst Phase of McNeil's Nebula (V1647 Orionis)

We present a detailed study of the post-outburst phase of McNeil's nebula (V1647 Ori) using optical B,V,R,I and NIR J,H,K photometric and low resolution optical spectroscopic observations. The observations were carried out with the HFOSC, NIRCAM, TIRCAM and NICMOS cameras on the 2m HCT and 1.2m PRL telescopes during the period 2004 Feb-2005 Dec. The optical/NIR observations show a general decline in brightness of the exciting source of McNeil's nebula (V1647 Ori). Our recent optical images show that V1647 Ori has faded by more than 3 mags since Feb 2004. The optical/NIR photometric data also show a significant variation in the mags (Delta V = 0.78 mag, Delta R = 0.44 mag, Delta I = 0.21 mag, Delta J = 0.24 mag and Delta H = 0.20 mag) of V1647 Ori within a period of one month, which is possibly undergoing a phase similar to eruptive variables, like EXors or FUors. The optical spectra show a few features such as strong Halpha emission with blue-shifted absorption and the CaII IR triplet (8498A, 8542A and 8662A) in emission. As compared to the period just after outburst, there is a decrease in the depth and extent of the blue-shifted absorption component, indicating a weakening in the powerful stellar wind. The presence of the CaII IR triplet in emission confirms that V1647 Ori is a PMS star. The long-term, post-outburst photometric observations of V1647 Ori suggest an EXor, rather than an FUor event. An optical/IR comparison of the region surrounding McNeil's nebula shows that the optical nebula is more widely and predominantly extended to the north, whereas the IR nebula is relatively confined (dia ~ 60 arcsec), but definitely extended, to the south, too.

Circumstellar disks around Herbig Ae/Be stars: polarization, outflows and binary orbits

The geometrical relationship between the distribution of circumstellar matter, observed optical linear polarization, outflows and binary orbital plane in Herbig Ae/Be stars is investigated. Optical linear polarization measurements carried out for a number of Herbig Ae/Be stars that are either known to be in binary systems and/or have bipolar jets are presented in this paper. Available information on the position angles of polarization, outflows and binary companions for Herbig Ae/Be stars is compiled and analysed for any possible correlations. In $\approx 85%$ of the sources the outflow position angle is within $30^{\circ}$ of being parallel or perpendicular to the polarization position angle. In $\approx 81%$ of the sources the binary position angle is within $30^{\circ}$ of being parallel or perpendicular to the polarization position angle. Out of 15 sources with bipolar outflows, 10 sources have the binary position angle within $30^{\circ}$ of being perpendicular to the outflow position angle. These results favour those binary formation mechanisms in which the binary components and the disks around individual stars or circumbinary disks are coplanar.

Non-emission line young stars of intermediate mass

We present optical spectra of four intermediate mass candidate young stellar objects that have often been classified as Herbig Ae/Be stars. Typical Herbig Ae/Be emission features are not present in the spectra of these stars. Three of them, HD 36917, HD 36982 and HD 37062 are members of the young Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This association constrains their ages to be < 1 Myr. The lack of appreciable near infrared excess in them suggests the absence of hot dust close to the central star. But they do possess significant amounts of cold and extended dust component as revealed by the large excess emission observed at far infrared wavelengths. Fractional infrared luminosity $L_{ir}/L_{\star}$ and the dust masses computed from IRAS fluxes are systematically lower than that found for Herbig Ae/Be stars but higher than those for Vega-like stars. These stars may then represent the youngest examples of Vega phenomenon known so far. In contrast, the other star in our sample, HD 58647, is more likely to be a classical Be star as evident from the low $L_{ir}/L_{\star}$, scarcity of circumstellar dust, low polarization, presence of H$α$ emission and near infrared excess and far infrared spectral energy distribution consistent with free-free emission similar to other well known classical Be stars.
