Low T Dynamical Properties of Spin Glasses Smoothly Extrapolate to T=0

We compare ground state properties of 3D Ising Spin Glasses with Gaussian couplings with results from off-equilibrium numerical simulations at non zero (but low) temperatures. We find that the non-zero temperature properties of the system smoothly connect to the T=0 behavior, confirming the point of view that results established at T=0 typically also give relevant information about the $T\ne 0$ physics of the system.

The 3-SAT problem with large number of clauses in $\infty$-replica symmetry breaking scheme

In this paper we analyze the structure of the UNSAT-phase of the overconstrained 3-SAT model by studying the low temperature phase of the associated disordered spin model. We derive the $\infty$ Replica Symmetry Broken equations for a general class of disordered spin models which includes the Sherrington - Kirkpatrick model, the Ising $p$-spin model as well as the overconstrained 3-SAT model as particular cases. We have numerically solved the $\infty$ Replica Symmetry Broken equations using a pseudo-spectral code down to and including zero temperature. We find that the UNSAT-phase of the overconstrained 3-SAT model is of the $\infty$-RSB kind: in order to get a stable solution the replica symmetry has to be broken in a continuous way, similarly to the SK model in external magnetic field.

Zero-temperature responses of a 3D spin glass in a field

We probe the energy landscape of the 3D Edwards-Anderson spin glass in a magnetic field to test for a spin glass ordering. We find that the spin glass susceptibility is anomalously large on the lattice sizes we can reach. Our data suggest that a transition from the spin glass to the paramagnetic phase takes place at B_c=0.65, though the possibility B_c=0 cannot be excluded. We also discuss the question of the nature of the putative frozen phase.

Off-equilibrium dynamics in the energy landscape of a simple model glass

The aging dynamics of a simple model glass is numerically investigated observing how it takes place in the potential energy landscape $V$. Partitioning the landscape in basins of minima of $|\nabla V|^2$, we are able to elucidate some interesting topological properties of the aging process. The main result is the characterization of the long time behavior as a jump dynamics between basins of attraction of minima. Moreover we extract some information about the landscape itself, determining quantitatively few parameters describing it, such as the mean energy barrier value and the mean square distance between adjacent minima.

Vibrations in glasses and Euclidean Random Matrix theory

We study numerically and analytically a simple off-lattice model of scalar harmonic vibrations by means of Euclidean random matrix theory. Since the spectrum of this model shares the most puzzling spectral features with the high-frequency domain of glasses (non-Rayleigh broadening of the Brillouin peak, boson peak and secondary peak), the Euclidean random matrix theory provide a single and fairly simple theoretical framework to their explanation.

Boson peak in an harmonic scalar model

We study, analytically and numerically, an off-lattice model of scalar harmonic vibrations for structural glasses. The model has a Boson-Peak which we argue can be considered as a prototype for materials with a Boson Peak frequency that decreases with lowering temperature. The density evolution of the Boson Peak in silica is qualitatively reproduced. The dispersion relation is linear at the Boson Peak frequency, in agreement with experiments. In our model the Boson Peak is a precursor of a nearby mechanical instability. The Boson Peak is built up by the hybridization of the sound waves with extended, but non propagating (in the sense of a flat dispersion relation), modes.

Kob-Andersen model: a non-standard mechanism for the glassy transition

We present new results reflecting the analogies between the Kob-Andersen model and other glassy systems. Studying the stability of the blocked configurations above and below the transition we also give arguments that supports their relevance for the glassy behaviour of the model. However we find, surprisingly, that the organization of the phase space of the system is different from the well known organization of other mean-field spin glasses and structural glasses.

Vibrational spectrum of topologically disordered systems

The topological nature of the disorder of glasses and supercooled liquids strongly affects their high-frequency dynamics. In order to understand its main features, we analytically studied a simple topologically disordered model, where the particles oscillate around randomly distributed centers, interacting through a generic pair potential. We present results of a resummation of the perturbative expansion in the inverse particle density for the dynamic structure factor and density of states. This gives accurate results for the range of densities found in real systems.

Against temperature chaos in naive Thouless-Anderson-Palmer equations

We study the temperature structure of the naive TAP equations by mean of a recursion algorithm. The problem of the chaos in temperature is addressed using the notion of the temperature evolution of equilibrium states. The lowest free energy states show relevant correlations with the ground state, and a careful finite size analysis indicates that these correlations are not finite size effects, ruling out the possibility of chaos in temperature even in the thermodynamic limit. The correlations of the equilibrium states with respect to the ground state are investigated. The performance of a new heuristic algorithm for the search of ground states is also discussed.

Width Distributions and the Upper Critical Dimension of KPZ Interfaces

Simulations of restricted solid-on-solid growth models are used to build the width-distributions of d=2-5 dimensional KPZ interfaces. We find that the universal scaling function associated with the steady-state width-distribution changes smoothly as d is increased, thus strongly suggesting that d=4 is not an upper critical dimension for the KPZ equation. The dimensional trends observed in the scaling functions indicate that the upper critical dimension is at infinity.

Vibrational spectra in glasses

The findings of X-ray and neutron scattering experiments on amorphous systems are interpreted within the framework of the theory of Euclidean random matrices. This allows to take into account the topological nature of the disorder, a key ingredient which strongly affects the vibrational spectra of those systems. We present a resummation scheme for a perturbative expansion in the inverse particle density, allowing an accurate analytical computation of the dynamical structure factor within the range of densities encountered in real systems.

The K-sat problem in a simple limit

We compute the thermodynamic properties of the 3-satisfiability problem in the infinite connectivity limit. In this limit the computations can be strongly simplified and the thermodynamical properties can be obtained with an high accuracy. We find evidence for a continuous replica symmetry breaking in the region of high number of clauses, $α> α_c$.

The dynamical structure factor in topologically disordered systems

A computation of the dynamical structure factor of topologically disordered systems, where the disorder can be described in terms of euclidean random matrices, is presented. Among others, structural glasses and supercooled liquids belong to that class of systems. The computation describes their relevant spectral features in the region of the high frequency sound. The analytical results are tested with numerical simulations and are found to be in very good agreement with them. Our results may explain the findings of inelastic X-ray scattering experiments in various glassy systems.

Reply to Comment on "Two time scales and violation of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem in a finite dimensional model for structural glasses"

In a Comment (cond-mat/0103444) on our recent paper "Two time scales and violation of FDT in a finite dimensional model for structural glasses" [1], A. de Candia and A. Coniglio show evidence that the equilibrium overlap distribution P(q) of the frustrated Ising lattice gas (FILG) does not coincide with the one that could be estimated from the off-equilibrium results presented in [1]. In this Reply we show new results on the glassy phase of the FILG that clarify the controversy. Nevertheless, the structure of the equilibrium P(q) remains an open problem. [1] F. Ricci-Tersenghi, D. Renormalization Group Approach to Spin Glass Systems

A renormalization group transformation suitable for spin glass models and, more generally, for disordered models, is presented. The procedure is non-standard in both the nature of the additional interactions and the coarse graining transformation, that is performed on the overlap probability measure (which is clearly non-Gibbsian). Universality classes are thus naturally defined on a large set of models, going from $\Z_2$ and Gaussian spin glasses to Ising and fully frustrated models, and others.

Neighborhood preferences in random matching problems

We consider a class of random matching problems where the distance between two points has a probability law which, for a small distance l, goes like l^r. In the framework of the cavity method, in the limit of an infinite number of points, we derive equations for p_k, the probability for some given point to be matched to its k-th nearest neighbor in the optimal configuration. These equations are solved in two limiting cases : r=0 - where we recover p_k=1/2^k, as numerically conjectured by Houdayer et al. and recently rigorously proved by Aldous - and r -> +infty. For 0<r<+infty, we are not able to solve the equations analytically, but we compute the leading behavior of p_k for large k.

Glassy transition in a disordered model for the RNA secondary structure

We numerically study a disordered model for the RNA secondary structure and we find that it undergoes a phase transition, with a breaking of the replica symmetry in the low temperature region (like in spin glasses). Our results are based on the exact evaluation of the partition function.
