Critical Exponents of the KPZ Equation via Multi-Surface Coding Numerical Simulations

We study the KPZ equation (in D = 2, 3 and 4 spatial dimensions) by using a RSOS discretization of the surface. We measure the critical exponents very precisely, and we show that the rational guess is not appropriate, and that 4D is not the upper critical dimension. We are also able to determine very precisely the exponent of the sub-leading scaling corrections, that turns out to be close to 1 in all cases. We introduce and use a {\em multi-surface coding} technique, that allow a gain of order 30 over usual numerical simulations.

Topological Description of the Aging Dynamics in Simple Glasses

We numerically investigate the aging dynamics of a monatomic Lennard-Jones glass, focusing on the topology of the potential energy landscape which, to this aim, has been partitioned in basins of attraction of stationary points (saddles and minima). The analysis of the stationary points visited during the aging dynamics shows the existence of two distinct regimes: i) at short times, t t_c, the system mainly lies in basins pertaining to minima of slowly decreasing energy. The dynamics for t>t_c can be represented by a simple random walk on a network of minima with a jump probability proportional to the inverse of the waiting time.

On the Use of Optimized Monte Carlo Methods for Studying Spin Glasses

We start from recently published numerical data by Hatano and Gubernatis cond-mat/0008115 to discuss properties of convergence to equilibrium of optimized Monte Carlo methods (bivariate multi canonical and parallel tempering). We show that these data are not thermalized, and they lead to an erroneous physical picture. We shed some light on why the bivariate multi canonical Monte Carlo method can fail.

Thermodynamics of a Tiling Model

A particular, two-dimensional, tiling model, composed by the so called Wang tiles has been studied at finite temperature by Monte Carlo numerical simulations. In absence of any thermal bath the Wang tiles give the opportunity of building a very large number of non-periodic tilings. We can construct a local Hamiltonian such that only perfectly matched tilings are ground states with zero energy. This Hamiltonian has a very large degeneracy. The thermodynamic behaviour of such a system seems to show a continuous phase transition at non zero temperature. An order parameter with non-trivial features is proposed. Under the critical temperature the model exhibits aging properties. The fluctuation-dissipation theorem is violated.

Off-Equilibrium Effective Temperature in Monatomic Lennard-Jones Glass

The off-equilibrium dynamics of a monatomic Lennard-Jones glass is investigated after sudden isothermal density jumps (crunch) from well equilibrated liquid configurations towards the glassy state. The generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation has been studied and the temperature dependence of the violation factor m is found in agreement with the one step replica symmetry breaking scenario, i.e. at low temperature m(T) is found proportional to T up to an off-equilibrium effective temperature T_eff, where m(T_eff)=1. We report T_eff as a function of the density and compare it with the glass transition temperatures T_g as determined by equilibrium calculations.

The dynamical structure factor in disordered systems

We study the spectral width as a function of the external momentum for the dynamical structure factor of a disordered harmonic solid, considered as a toy model for supercooled liquids and glasses. Both in the context of single-link coherent potential approximation and of a single-defect approximation, two different regimes are clearly identified: if the density of states at zero energy is zero, the Rayleigh $p^4$ law is recovered for small momentum. On the contrary, if the disorder induces a non vanishing density of states at zero energy, a linear behaviour is obtained. The dynamical structure factor is numerically calculated in lattices as large as $96^3$, and satisfactorily agrees with the analytical computations.

Lennard-Jones binary mixture: a thermodynamical approach to glass transition

We study the liquid-glass transition of the Lennard-Jones binary mixture introduced by Kob and Andersen from a thermodynamic point of view. By means of the replica approach, translating the problem in the study of a molecular liquid, we study the phase transition due to the entropy crisis and we find that the Kauzmann's temperature $\tk$ is $\sim 0.32$. At the end we compare analytical predictions with numerical results.

Off-Equilibrium Dynamics at Very Low Temperatures in 3d Spin Glasses

We present a high statistic systematic study of the overlap correlation function well below the critical temperature in the three dimensional Gaussian spin glass. The off-equilibrium correlation function has been studied confirming the power law behavior for the dynamical correlation length. In particular we have computed the dynamical critical exponent $z$ in a wide range of temperatures, $0.35 \le T \le 0.9$, obtaining a dependence $z(T)=6.2/T$ in a very good agreement with recent experiments. Moreover, we report a study of the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for very low temperatures $T=0.5$ and $T=0.35$. All our numerical results avoid a droplet model interpretation even when $T$ is as low as $T=0.35$.

Effect of Dilution on First Order Transitions: The Three Dimensional Three States Potts Model

We have studied numerically the effect of quenched site dilution on a first order phase transition in three dimensions. We have simulated the site diluted three states Potts model studying in detail the second order region of its phase diagram. We have found that the $ν$ exponent is compatible with the one of the three dimensional diluted Ising model whereas the $η$ exponent is definitely different.

Spectra of Euclidean Random Matrices

We study the spectrum of a random matrix, whose elements depend on the Euclidean distance between points randomly distributed in space. This problem is widely studied in the context of the Instantaneous Normal Modes of fluids and is particularly relevant at the glass transition. We introduce a systematic study of this problem through its representation by a field theory. In this way we can easily construct a high density expansion, which can be resummed producing an approximation to the spectrum similar to the Coherent Potential Approximation for disordered systems.

Potential Energy Landscape and Long Time Dynamics in a Simple Model Glass

We analyze the properties of a Lennard-Jones system at the level of the potential energy landscape. After an exhaustive investigation of the topological features of the landscape of the systems, obtained studying small size sample, we describe the dynamics of the systems in the multi-dimensional configurational space by a simple model. This consider the configurational space as a connected network of minima where the dynamics proceeds by jumps described by an appropriate master equation. Using this model we are able to reproduce the long time dynamics and the low temperature regime. We investigate both the equilibrium regime and the off-equilibrium one, finding those typical glassy behavior usually observed in the experiments such as: {\it i)} stretched exponential relaxation, {\it ii)} temperature-dependent stretching parameter, {\it iii)} breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation, and {\it iv)} appearance of a critical temperature below which one observes deviation from the fluctuation-dissipation relation as consequence of the lack of equilibrium in the system.

The response of glassy systems to random perturbations: A bridge between equilibrium and off-equilibrium

We discuss the response of aging systems with short-range interactions to a class of random perturbations. Although these systems are out of equilibrium, the limit value of the free energy at long times is equal to the equilibrium free energy. By exploiting this fact, we define a new order parameter function, and we relate it to the ratio between response and fluctuation, which is in principle measurable in an aging experiment. For a class of systems possessing stochastic stability, we show that this new order parameter function is intimately related to the static order parameter function, describing the distribution of overlaps between clustering states. The same method is applied to investigate the geometrical organization of pure states. We show that the ultrametric organization in the dynamics implies static ultrametricity, and we relate these properties to static separability, i.e., the property that the measure of the overlap between pure states is essentially unique. Our results, especially relevant for spin glasses, pave the way to an experimental determination of the order parameter function.

Site-diluted three dimensional Ising Model with long-range correlated disorder

We study two different versions of the site-diluted Ising model in three dimensions with long-range spatially correlated disorder by Monte Carlo means. We use finite-size scaling techniques to compute the critical exponents of these systems, taking into account the strong scaling-corrections. We find a $ν$ value that is compatible with the analytical predictions.

Comment on "Ising Spin Glasses in a Magnetic Field"

In ref. cond-mat/9811419 Houdayer and Martin analyze the T=0 3d EA spin glass with a magnetic field $B$. By using a new, powerful method, they determine an effective critical field $B_c$ as a function of the lattice size $L$. They use their results to deduce that the model is behaving like in the droplet approach and not like the mean-field theory. We show here, by using some unpublished data, that this very interesting method and numerical results are completely compatible with the behavior implied by the Replica Symmetry Breaking theory.

Comment on "Evidence for the Droplet/Scaling Picture of Spin Glasses"

In a recent letter Moore et al. claim to exhibit evidence for a non-mean-field behavior of the $3d$ Ising spin glass. We show that their claim is insubstantial, and by analyzing in detail the behavior of the Migdal-Kadanoff approximation (MKA) as compared to the behavior of the Edwards-Anderson (EA) spin glass we find further evidence of a mean-field like behavior of the $3d$ spin glass.
