Experimental Determination of In-Medium Cluster Binding Energies and Mott Points in Nuclear Matter

In medium binding energies and Mott points for $d$, $t$, $^3$He and $α$ clusters in low density nuclear matter have been determined at specific combinations of temperature and density in low density nuclear matter produced in collisions of 47$A$ MeV $^{40}$Ar and $^{64}$Zn projectiles with $^{112}$Sn and $^{124}$Sn target nuclei. The experimentally derived values of the in medium modified binding energies are in good agreement with recent theoretical predictions based upon the implementation of Pauli blocking effects in a quantum statistical approach.

On the quantum statistics of bound states within the Rutherford model of matter

The quantum statistical treatment of the Rutherford model, considering matter as a system of point charges (electrons and nuclei) is analyzed. First, in the historical context, the solutions of different fundamental problems, such as the divergence of the partition function, elaborated by Herzfeld, Planck, Brillouin and Rompe - most of the relevant papers published in the Annalen der Physik, are discussed. Beyond this, the modern state of art is presented and new results are given which explain, why bound states according to a discrete part of the spectra occur only in a valley in the temperature-density plane. Based on the actual state of the quantum statistics of Coulomb systems, virial expansions within the canonical ensemble and the grand ensemble and combinations are derived. The following transitions along isotherms are studied: (i) the formation of bound states occurring by increasing the density from low to moderate values, (ii) the disappearance of bound state effects at higher densities due to medium effects. Within the physical picture we calculate isotherms of pressure for Hydrogen in a broad density region and show that in the region between $20\, 000$ K and $100\, 000$ K and particle densities below $10^{22}$ cm$^{-3}$ the cross-over from full to partial ionization may be well described by the contributions of extended ring diagrams and ladder diagrams.

Electron Pairing and Coulomb Repulsion in One-Dimensional Anharmonic Lattices

We show that in anharmonic one-dimensional crystal lattices pairing of electrons or holes in a localized bisolectron state is possible due to coupling between the charges and the lattice deformation that can overcompensate the Coulomb repulsion. Such localized soliton-like states appear as traveling ground bound singlet states of two extra electrons in the potential well created by the local lattice deformation. We also find the first excited localized state of two electrons in a soliton-like lattice deformation potential well given by a triplet state of two electrons. The results of the analytical study of interacting electrons in a lattice with cubic anharmonicity are compared with the numerical simulations of two electrons in an anharmonic lattice taking into account of the (local) Hubbard electron-electron repulsion. We qualitative agreement between both approaches for a broad interval of parameter values. For illustration we give expressions for the bisolectron binding energy with parameter values that are typical for biological macromolecules. We estimate critical values of Coulomb repulsion where the bisolectron becomes unbound.

Decoherence in an exactly solvable qubit model with initial qubit-environment correlations

We study a model of dephasing (decoherence) in a two-state quantum system (qubit) coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators. An exact analytic solution for the reduced dynamics of a two-state system in this model has been obtained previously for factorizing initial states of the combined system. We show that the model admits exact solutions for a large class of correlated initial states which are typical in the theory of quantum measurements. We derive exact expressions for the off-diagonal elements of the qubit density matrix, which hold for an arbitrary strength of coupling between the qubit and the bath. The influence of initial correlations on decoherence is considered for different bath spectral densities. Time behavior of the qubit entropy in the decoherence process is discussed.

Bound States in Coulomb Systems - Old Problems and New Solutions

We analyze the quantum statistical treatment of bound states in Hydrogen considered as a system of electrons and protons. Within this physical picture we calculate isotherms of pressure for Hydrogen in a broad density region and compare to some results from the chemical picture. First we resume in detail the two transitions along isotherms : (i) the formation of bound states occurring by increasing the density from low to moderate values, (ii) the destruction of bound states in the high density region, modelled here by Pauli-Fock effects. Avoiding chemical models we will show, why bound states according to a discrete part of the spectra occur only in a valley in the T-p plane. First we study virial expansions in the canonical ensemble and then in the grand canonical ensemble. We show that in fugacity representations the population of bound states saturates at higher density and that a combination of both representations provides quickly converging equations of state. In the case of degenerate systems we calculated first the density-dependent energy levels, and find the pressure in Hartree-Fock-Wigner approximation showing the prominent role of Pauli blocking and Fock effects in the selfenergy.

Quartic Lattice Interactions, Soliton-like Excitations and Electron Pairing in One-Dimensional Anharmonic Crystals

We show that two added, excess electrons with opposite spins in one-dimensional crystal lattices with quartic anharmonicity may form a bisolectron, which is a localized bound state of the paired electrons to a soliton-like lattice deformation. It is also shown that when the Coulomb repulsion is included, the wave function of the bisolectron has two maxima, and such a state is stable in lattices with strong enough electron-(phonon/soliton) lattice coupling. Furthermore the energy of the bisolectron is shown to be lower than the energy of the state with two separate, independent electrons, as even with account of the Coulomb repulsion the bisolectron binding energy is positive

Quasiparticle light elements and quantum condensates in nuclear matter

Nuclei in dense matter are influenced by the medium. In the cluster mean field approximation, an effective Schrödinger equation for the $A$-particle cluster is obtained accounting for the effects of the surrounding medium, such as self-energy and Pauli blocking. Similar to the single-baryon states (free neutrons and protons), the light elements ($2 \le A \le 4$, internal quantum state $ν$) are treated as quasiparticles with energies $E_{A,ν}(P; T, n_n,n_p)$ that depend on the center of mass momentum $\vec P$, the temperature $T$, and the total densities $n_n,n_p$ of neutrons and protons, respectively. We consider the composition and thermodynamic properties of nuclear matter at low densities. At low temperatures, quartetting is expected to occur. Consequences for different physical properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei are discussed.

Parametrization of light nuclei quasiparticle energy shifts and composition of warm and dense nuclear matter

Correlations and the formation of bound states (nuclei) are essential for the properties of nuclear matter in equilibrium as well as in nonequilibrium. In a quantum statistical approach, quasiparticle energies are obtained for the light elements that reflect the influence of the medium. We present analytical fits for the quasiparticle energy shifts of light nuclei that can be used in various applications. This is a prerequisite for the investigation of warm and dense matter that reproduces the nuclear statistical equilibrium and virial expansions in the low-density limit as well as relativistic mean field and Brueckner Hartree-Fock approaches near saturation density.

Kinetics of Photon Radiation off an e-e+ Plasma created from the Vacuum in a Strong Laser Field

We consider the one-photon annihilation mechanism in a electron - positron quasiparticle plasma (EPP) created from the vacuum in a strong subcritical laser field due to the dynamical Schwinger mechanism. On the basis of a kinetic theory approach we show that the secondary photons have a radiation spectrum proportional to 1/k (flicker noise). This effect is very small for EPP excitations in the optical spectrum but can reach quite observable values in the gamma - ray region.

A proposal for testing subcritical vacuum pair production with high power lasers

We present a proposal for testing the prediction of non-equilibrium quantum field theory below the Schwinger limit. The proposed experiments should be able to detect a measurable number of gamma rays resulting from the annihilation of pairs in the focal spot of two opposing high intensity laser beams. We discuss the dependence of the expected number of gamma rays with the laser parameters and compare with the estimated background level of gamma hits for realistic laser conditions.

Composition and thermodynamics of nuclear matter with light clusters

We investigate nuclear matter at finite temperature and density, including the formation of light clusters up to the alpha particle The novel feature of this work is to include the formation of clusters as well as their dissolution due to medium effects in a systematic way using two many-body theories: a microscopic quantum statistical (QS) approach and a generalized relativistic mean field (RMF) model. Nucleons and clusters are modified by medium effects. Both approaches reproduce the limiting cases of nuclear statistical equilibrium (NSE) at low densities and cluster-free nuclear matter at high densities. The treatment of the cluster dissociation is based on the Mott effect due to Pauli blocking, implemented in slightly different ways in the QS and the generalized RMF approaches. We compare the numerical results of these models for cluster abundances and thermodynamics in the region of medium excitation energies with temperatures T <= 20 MeV and baryon number densities from zero to a few times saturation density. The effect of cluster formation on the liquid-gas phase transition and on the density dependence of the symmetry energy is studied. Comparison is made with other theoretical approaches, in particular those, which are commonly used in astrophysical calculations. The results are relevant for heavy-ion collisions and astrophysical applications.

Critical Temperature for $α$-Particle Condensation within a Momentum Projected Mean Field Approach

Alpha-particle (quartet) condensation in homogeneous spin-isospin symmetric nuclear matter is investigated. The usual Thouless criterion for the critical temperature is extended to the quartet case. The in-medium four-body problem is strongly simplified by the use of a momentum projected mean field ansatz for the quartet. The self-consistent single particle wave functions are shown and discussed for various values of the density at the critical temperature.

Light nuclei quasiparticle energy shift in hot and dense nuclear matter

Nuclei in dense matter are influenced by the medium. In the cluster mean field approximation, an effective Schrödinger equation for the $A$-particle cluster is obtained accounting for the effects of the correlated medium such as self-energy, Pauli blocking and Bose enhancement. Similar to the single-baryon states (free neutrons and protons), the light elements ($2 \le A \le 4$, internal quantum state $ν$) are treated as quasiparticles with energies $E_{A,ν}(\vec P; T, n_n,n_p)$. These energies depend on the center of mass momentum $\vec P$, as well as temperature $T$ and the total densities $n_n,n_p$ of neutrons and protons, respectively. No $β$ equilibrium is considered so that $n_n, n_p$ (or the corresponding chemical potentials $μ_n, μ_p$) are fixed independently. For the single nucleon quasiparticle energy shift, different approximate expressions such as Skyrme or relativistic mean field approaches are well known. Treating the $A$-particle problem in appropriate approximations, results for the cluster quasiparticle shifts are given. Properties of dense nuclear matter at moderate temperatures in the subsaturation density region considered here are influenced by the composition. This in turn is determined by the cluster quasiparticle energies, in particular the formation of clusters at low densities when the temperature decreases, and their dissolution due to Pauli blocking as the density increases. Our finite-temperature Green function approach covers different limiting cases: The low-density region where the model of nuclear statistical equilibrium and virial expansions can be applied, and the saturation density region where a mean field approach is possible.

Alpha-Particle Condensation in Nuclear Systems

The onset of quartetting, i.e. alpha-particle condensation, in symmetric nuclear matter is studied with the help of an in-medium modified four nucleon equation. It is found that at very low density quartetting wins over pairing, because of the strong binding of the alpha-particles. The critical temperature can reach values up to around 6 MeV. Also the disappearance of alpha-particles with increasing density, i.e. the Mott transition, is investigated. In finite nuclei the Hoyle state, that is the 0_2^+ of 12C, is identified as an "alpha-particle condensate" state. It is conjectured that such states also exist in heavier n alpha-nuclei, like 16O, 20Ne, etc. For instance the 6-th 0^+ state of 16O at 15.1 MeV is identified from a theoretical analysis as being a strong candidate for an alpha condensate state. Exploratory calculations are performed for the density dependence of the alpha condensate fraction at zero temperature to address the suppression of the four-particle condensate below nuclear-matter density. Possible quartet condensation in other systems is discussed briefly

Density-induced suppression of the alpha-particle condensate in nuclear matter and the structure of alpha cluster states in nuclei

At low densities, with decreasing temperatures, in symmetric nuclear matter alpha-particles are formed, which eventually give raise to a quantum condensate with four-nucleon alpha-like correlations (quartetting). Starting with a model of alpha-matter, where undistorted alpha particles interact via an effective interaction such as the Ali-Bodmer potential, the suppression of the condensate fraction at zero temperature with increasing density is considered. Using a Jastrow-Feenberg approach, it is found that the condensate fraction vanishes near saturation density. Additionally, the modification of the internal state of the alpha particle due to medium effects will further reduce the condensate. In finite systems, an enhancement of the S state wave function of the c.o.m. orbital of alpha particle motion is considered as the correspondence to the condensate. Wave functions have been constructed for self-conjugate 4n nuclei which describe the condensate state, but are fully antisymmetrized on the nucleonic level. These condensate-like cluster wave functions have been successfully applied to describe properties of low-density states near the n alpha threshold. Comparison with OCM calculations in 12C and 16O shows strong enhancement of the occupation of the S-state c.o.m. orbital of the alpha-particles. This enhancement is decreasing if the baryon density increases, similar to the density-induced suppression of the condensate fraction in alpha matter. The ground states of 12C and 16O show no enhancement at all, thus a quartetting condensate cannot be formed at saturation densities.

Bremsstrahlung vs. Thomson scattering in VUV-FEL plasma experiments

We determine the spectral photon yield from a hot dense plasma irradiated by VUV-FEL light in a Thomson scattering experiment. The Thomson signal is compared to the emission background mainly caused by bremsstrahlung photons. We determine experimental conditions that allow for a signal-to-background ratio larger than unity. By derivation of the Thomson and the bremsstrahlung spectrum from linear response theory we present a consistent quantum statistical approach to both processes. This allows for a systematic treatment of medium and quantum effects such as dynamical screening and strong collisions. Results are presented for the threshold FEL-intensity as a function of density and temperature. We show that the account for quantum effects leads to larger thresholds as compared to previous work.

Unconstrained SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory with Topological Term in the Long-Wavelength Approximation

The Hamiltonian reduction of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory for an arbitrary θangle to an unconstrained nonlocal theory of a self-interacting positive definite symmetric 3 \times 3 matrix field S(x) is performed. It is shown that, after exact projection to a reduced phase space, the density of the Pontryagin index remains a pure divergence, proving the θindependence of the unconstrained theory obtained. An expansion of the nonlocal kinetic part of the Hamiltonian in powers of the inverse coupling constant and truncation to lowest order, however, lead to violation of the θindependence of the theory. In order to maintain this property on the level of the local approximate theory, a modified expansion in the inverse coupling constant is suggested, which for a vanishing θangle coincides with the original expansion. The corresponding approximate Lagrangian up to second order in derivatives is obtained, and the explicit form of the unconstrained analogue of the Chern-Simons current linear in derivatives is given. Finally, for the case of degenerate field configurations S(x) with rank|S| = 1, a nonlinear σ-type model is obtained, with the Pontryagin topological term reducing to the Hopf invariant of the mapping from the three-sphere S^3 to the unit two-sphere S^2 in the Whitehead form.
