Alpha-particle condensation in nuclei

A round up of the present status of the conjecture that n alpha nuclei form an alpha-particle condensate in excited states close to the n alpha threshold is given. Experiments which could demonstrate the condensate character are proposed. Possible lines of further theoretical developments are discussed.

Analysis of previous microscopic calculations for second $0^+$ state in $^{12}$C in terms of 3-alpha particle Bose-condensed state

The wave function of the second $0^+$ state of $^{12}$C which was obtained long time ago by solving the microscopic 3$α$ problem is shown to be almost completely equivalent to the wave function of the 3$α$ condensed state which has been proposed recently by the present authors. This equivalence of the wave functions is shown to hold in two cases where different effective two-nucleon forces are adopted. This finding gives strong support for interpreting the second $0^+$ state of $^{12}$C which is the key state for the synthesis of $^{12}$C in stars ('Hoyle' state), and which is one of the typical mysterious $0^+$ states in light nuclei, as a gas-like structure of three $α$ particles, Bose-condensed into an identical s-wave function.

Pair Fluctuations in Ultra-small Fermi Systems within Self-Consistent RPA at Finite Temperature

A self-consistent version of the Thermal Random Phase Approximation (TSCRPA) is developed within the Matsubara Green's Function (GF) formalism. The TSCRPA is applied to the many level pairing model. The normal phase of the system is considered. The TSCRPA results are compared with the exact ones calculated for the Grand Canonical Ensemble. Advantages of the TSCRPA over the Thermal Mean Field Approximation (TMFA) and the standard Thermal Random Phase Approximation (TRPA) are demonstrated. Results for correlation functions, excitation energies, single particle level densities, etc., as a function of temperature are presented.

Interpolation formula for the electrical conductivity of nonideal plasmas

On the basis of a quantum-statistical approach to the electrical conductivity of nonideal plasmas we derive analytical results in the classical low-density regime, in the degenerate Born limit, and for the contribution of the Debye-Onsager relaxation effect. These explicit results are used to construct an improved interpolation formula of the electrical conductivity valid in a wide range of temperature and density which allows to compare with available experimental data of nonideal plasmas.

Anisotropic multi-gap superfluid states in nuclear matter

It is shown that under changing density or temperature a nucleon Fermi superfluid can undergo a phase transition to an anisotropic superfluid state, characterized by nonvanishing gaps in pairing channels with singlet-singlet (SS) and triplet-singlet (TS) pairing of nucleons (in spin and isospin spaces). In the SS pairing channel nucleons are paired with nonzero orbital angular momentum. Such two-gap states can arise as a result of branching from the one-gap solution of the self-consistent equations, describing SS or TS pairing of nucleons, that depends on the relationship between SS and TS coupling constants at the branching point. The density/temperature dependence of the order parameters and the critical temperature for transition to the anisotropic two-gap state are determined in a model with the SkP effective interaction. It is shown that the anisotropic SS-TS superfluid phase corresponds to a metastable state in nuclear matter.

On Unconstrained SU(2) Gluodynamics with Theta Angle

The Hamiltonian reduction of classical SU(2) Yang-Mills field theory to the equivalent unconstrained theory of gauge invariant local dynamical variables is generalized to the case of nonvanishing theta angle. It is shown that for any theta angle the elimination of the pure gauge degrees of freedom leads to a corresponding unconstrained nonlocal theory of self-interacting second rank symmetric tensor fields, and that the obtained classical unconstrained gluodynamics with different theta angles are canonically equivalent as on the original constrained level.

Alpha cluster condensation in 12C and 16O

A new $α$-cluster wave function is proposed which is of the $α$-particle condensate type. Applications to $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O show that states of low density close to the 3 resp. 4 $α$-particle threshold in both nuclei are possibly of this kind. It is conjectured that all self-conjugate 4$n$ nuclei may show similar features.

Unconstrained SU(2) Yang-Mills Quantum Mechanics with Theta Angle

The unconstrained classical system equivalent to spatially homogeneous SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with theta angle is obtained and canonically quantized. The Schrödinger eigenvalue problem is solved approximately for the low lying states using variational calculation. The properties of the groundstate are discussed, in particular its electric and magnetic properties, and the value of the "gluon condensate" is calculated. Furthermore it is shown that the energy spectrum of SU(2) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics is independent of the theta angle. Explicit evaluation of the Witten formula for the topological susceptibility gives strong support for the consistency of the variational results obtained.

Short time dynamics with initial correlations

The short-time dynamics of correlated systems is strongly influenced by initial correlations giving rise to an additional collision integral in the non-Markovian kinetic equation. Exact cancellation of the two integrals is found if the initial state is thermal equilibrium which is an important consistency criterion. Analytical results are given for the time evolution of the correlation energy which are confirmed by comparisons with molecular dynamics simulations (MD).

The ``Mixed'' Green's Function Approach to Quantum Kinetics with Initial Correlations

A method for deriving quantum kinetic equations with initial correlations is developed on the basis of the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The method is applicable to a wide range of correlated initial states described by nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics. Initial correlations and the real-time evolution are treated by a unified technique employing many-component ``mixed'' Green's functions. The Dyson equation for the mixed Green's function leads to a set of equations for real-time Green's functions and new (cross) components linking initial correlations with dynamical processes. These equations are used to formulate a generalized Kadanoff-Baym ansatz for correlated initial states. A non-Markovian short-time kinetic equation is derived within the T-matrix approximation for the self-energies. The properties of the memory kernels in this equation are considered in detail in Born approximation for the T-matrices. The kinetic equation is demonstrated to conserve the total energy of the system. An explicit expression for the time-dependent correlation energy is obtained.

Squeezed Gluon Condensate and Quark Confinement in the Global Color Model of QCD

We discuss how the presence of a squeezed gluon vacuum might lead to quark confinement in the framework of the global colour model of QCD. Using reduced phase space quantization of massive vector theory we construct a Lorentz invariant and colourless squeezed gluon condensate and show that it induces a permanent, nonlocal quark interaction (delta-function in 4-momentum space), which according to Munczek and Nemirovsky might lead to quark confinement. Our approach makes it possible to relate the strength of this effective confining quark interaction to the strength of the physical gluon condensate.

A quantum kinetic equation for particle production in the Schwinger mechanism

A quantum kinetic equation is derived for the description of pair production in a time-dependent homogeneous electric field $E(t)$. As a source term, the Schwinger mechanism for particle creation is incorporated. Possible particle production due to collisions and collisional damping are neglected. The main result is a kinetic equation of non-Markovian character. In the low density approximation, the source term is reduced to the leading part of the well known Schwinger formula for the probability of pair creation. We discuss the momentum and time dependence of the derived source term and compare with other approaches.

Medium modification of two-particle scattering in nonideal Bose systems

Medium modification of scattering properties in interacting Bose systems are considered by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation. An equation of state for the normal phase (generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck formula) is given using the in-medium phase shifts to include two-particle correlations. Conclusions are drawn for systems of bosonic atoms with repulsive interaction such as sodium $^{23}$Na and rubidium $^{87}$Rb. It is shown that the in-medium scattering length and the absolute value of the in-medium scattering phase shift for low scattering energies increase with density.

One-particle spectral function of electrons in a hot and dense plasma

A self-consistent determination of the spectral function and the self-energy of electrons in a hot and dense plasma is reported. The self-energy is determined within the approximation of the screened potential. It is shown, that the quasi-particle concept is not an adequate concept for hot and dense plasmas, since the width of the spectral function has to be considered. As an example, the solar core plasma is discussed. An effective quasi-particle picture is introduced and results for the solar core plasma as well as for ICF plasmas are presented.

Squeezed condensate of gluons and $η-η'$ mass difference

We consider a mechanism to create the $η- η'$ mass difference by the gluon anomaly in a squeezed vacuum. We find that the mass shift of the $η_0$ governing this mass difference is determined by the magnetic part of the gluon condensate. For the squeezed vacuum this magnetic part coincides with the total gluon condensate, so that we get a relation between the gluon condensate and the mass shift of the $η_0$ as a function of the strong coupling constant $α_s$. The values of the gluon condensate obtained through this relation are compared with the value by Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov and the recent update values by Narison.

In-medium two-nucleon properties in high electric fields

The quantum mechanical two - particle problem is considered in hot dense nuclear matter under the influence of a strong electric field such as the field of the residual nucleus in heavy - ion reactions. A generalized Galitskii-Bethe-Salpeter equation is derived and solved which includes retardation and field effects. Compared with the in-medium properties in the zero-field case, bound states are turned into resonances and the scattering phase shifts are modified. Four effects are observed due to the applied field: (i) A suppression of the Pauli-blocking below nuclear matter densities, (ii) the onset of pairing occurs already at higher temperatures due to the field, (iii) a field dependent finite lifetime of deuterons and (iv) the imaginary part of the quasiparticle self-energy changes its sign for special values of density and temperatures indicating a phase instability. The latter effect may influence the fragmentation processes. The lifetime of deuterons in a strong Coulomb field is given explicitly.

Medium modifications of the nucleon--deuteron break--up cross section in the Faddeev approach

The three--nucleon scattering problem in a nuclear medium is considered within the Faddeev technique. In particular the deuteron break--up cross section that governs the formation and the break--up reactions of deuterons (NNN <-> Nd) in a nuclear environment is calculated at finite temperatures and densities. A significant enhancement of the in--medium break--up cross section with increasing density has been found.
