Liouville integrable Lotka-Volterra systems

We present $\frac{m^{2}}{4}+\frac{m}{2}+\frac{1-\left(-1\right)^{m}}{8}$ homogeneous $(3m-2)$-parameter families of Liouville integrable $(2m)$- and $(2m-1)$-dimensional Lotka-Volterra systems. We also study inhomogeneous versions of these systems.

On the relation between the dual AKP equation and an equation by King and Schief, and its N-soliton solution

The Dual of the lattice AKP (DAKP) equation [P.H. van der Kamp et al., J. Phys. A 51, 365202 (2018)] is equivalent to a 14-point equation related to the lattice BKP equation, found by King and Schief (KS), and hence it is integrable. We show that the KS equation is dual to Hirota's version of AKP (DAGTE), and we settle the conjectured $N$-soliton solution of DAKP, for all values of the parameters.

Subalgebras of integrals, commutants, and superintegrable deformations of Lotka-Volterra systems

We consider the Lie-algebraic notion of commutant in the setting of Poisson algebra. This provides a framework for deforming Hamiltonian differential equations. By taking a subalgebra of the algebra of integrals, and considering the set of functions that Poisson commute with that subalgebra, the Hamiltonian can be deformed, while retaining integrability. We deform Liouville integrable and superintegrable Lotka-Volterra systems studied in [19]. We present different explicit constructions considering Abelian and non-Abelian subalgebras of integrals. We obtain superintegrable systems for specific dimensions, and in arbitrary dimension. Polynomial systems are deformed to rational systems, some of which have non-rational integrals. Superintegrability seems to be preserved in this approach.

Trees and superintegrable Lotka-Volterra families

To any tree on $n$ vertices we associate an $n$-dimensional Lotka-Volterra system with $3n-2$ parameters and, for generic values of the parameters, prove it is superintegrable, i.e. it admits $n-1$ functionally independent integrals. We also show how these systems can be reduced to an ($n-1$)-dimensional system which is superintegrable and solvable by quadratures.

On a quadratic Poisson algebra and integrable Lotka-Volterra systems with solutions in terms of Lambert's W function

We study a class of integrable nonhomogeneous Lotka-Volterra systems whose quadratic terms are defined by an antisymmetric matrix and whose linear terms consist of three blocks. We provide the Poisson algebra of their Darboux polynomials, and prove a contraction theorem. We then use these results to classify the systems according to the number of functionally independent (and, for some, commuting) integrals. We also establish separability/solvability by quadratures, given the solutions to the 2- and 3-dimensional systems, which we provide in terms of the Lambert W function.

Measure preservation and integrals for Lotka--Volterra tree-systems and their Kahan discretisation

We show that any Lotka--Volterra tree-system associated with an $n$-vertex tree, as introduced in Quispel et al., J. Phys. A 56 (2023) 315201, preserves a rational measure. We also prove that the Kahan discretisation of these tree-systems factorises and preserves the same measure. As a consequence, for the Kahan maps of Lotka--Volterra systems related to the subclass of tree-systems corresponding to graphs with more than one $n$-vertex subtree, we are able to construct rational integrals.

An Elementary Construction of Modified Hamiltonians and Modified Measures of 2D Kahan Maps

We show how to construct in an elementary way the invariant of the KHK discretisation of a cubic Hamiltonian system in two dimensions. That is, we show that this invariant is expressible as the product of the ratios of affine polynomials defining the prolongation of the three parallel sides of a hexagon. On the vertices of such a hexagon lie the indeterminacy points of the KHK map. This result is obtained analysing the structure of the singular fibres of the known invariant. We apply this construction to several examples, and we prove that a similar result holds true for a case outside the hypotheses of the main theorem, leading us to conjecture that further extensions are possible.

Discrete gradients in short-range molecular dynamics simulations

Discrete gradients (DG) or more exactly discrete gradient methods are time integration schemes that are custom-built to preserve first integrals or Lyapunov functions of a given ordinary differential equation (ODE). In conservative molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, the energy of the system is constant and therefore a first integral of motion. Hence, discrete gradient methods seem to be a natural choice as an integration scheme in conservative molecular dynamics simulations.

Deducing properties of ODEs from their discretization

We show that some hard to detect properties of quadratic ODEs (eg certain preserved integrals and measures) can be deduced more or less algorithmically from their Kahan discretization, using Darboux Polynomials (DPs). Somewhat similar results hold for ODEs of higher degree/order using certain other birational discretization methods.

Generalised Manin transformations and QRT maps

Manin transformations are maps of the plane that preserve a pencil of cubic curves. They are the composition of two involutions. Each involution is constructed in terms of an involution point that is required to be one of the base points of the pencil. We generalise this construction to explicit birational maps of the plane that preserve quadratic resp. certain quartic pencils, and show that they are measure-preserving and hence integrable. In the quartic construction the two involution points are required to be base points of the pencil of multiplicity 2. On the other hand, for the quadratic pencils the involution points can be any two distinct points in the plane (except for base points). We employ Pascal's theorem to show that the maps that preserve a quadratic pencil admit infinitely many symmetries. The full 18-parameter QRT map is obtained as a special instance of the quartic case in a limit where the two involution points go to infinity. We show by construction that each generalised Manin transformation can be brought to QRT form by a fractional affine transformation. We also specify classes of generalised Manin transformations which admit a root.

Analogues of Kahan's method for higher order equations of higher degree

Kahan introduced an explicit method of discretization for systems of first order differential equations with nonlinearities of degree at most two (quadratic vector fields). Kahan's method has attracted much interest due to the fact that it preserves many of the geometrical properties of the original continuous system. In particular, a large number of Hamiltonian systems of quadratic vector fields are known for which their Kahan discretization is a discrete integrable system. In this note, we introduce a special class of explicit order-preserving discretization schemes that are appropriate for certain systems of ordinary differential equations of higher order and higher degree.

Generating a chain of maps which preserve the same integral as a given map

We generalise the concept of duality to systems of ordinary difference equations (or maps). We propose a procedure to construct a chain of systems of equations which are dual, with respect to an integral $H$, to the given system, by exploiting the integral relation, defined by the upshifted version and the original version of $H$. When the numerator of the integral relation is biquadratic or multi-linear, we point out conditions where a dual fails to exists. The procedure is applied to several two-component systems obtained as periodic reductions of 2D lattice equations, including the nonlinear Schrödinger system, the two-component potential Korteweg-De Vries equation, the scalar modified Korteweg-De Vries equation, and a modified Boussinesq system.

Poisson structures for difference equations

We study the existence of log-canonical Poisson structures that are preserved by difference equations of special form. We also study the inverse problem, given a log-canonical Poisson structure to find a difference equation preserving this structure. We give examples of quadratic Poisson structures that arise for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) type maps which follow from a travelling-wave reduction of the corresponding integrable partial difference equation.

A geometric integration approach to nonsmooth, nonconvex optimisation

The optimisation of nonsmooth, nonconvex functions without access to gradients is a particularly challenging problem that is frequently encountered, for example in model parameter optimisation problems. Bilevel optimisation of parameters is a standard setting in areas such as variational regularisation problems and supervised machine learning. We present efficient and robust derivative-free methods called randomised Itoh--Abe methods. These are generalisations of the Itoh--Abe discrete gradient method, a well-known scheme from geometric integration, which has previously only been considered in the smooth setting. We demonstrate that the method and its favourable energy dissipation properties are well-defined in the nonsmooth setting. Furthermore, we prove that whenever the objective function is locally Lipschitz continuous, the iterates almost surely converge to a connected set of Clarke stationary points. We present an implementation of the methods, and apply it to various test problems. The numerical results indicate that the randomised Itoh--Abe methods are superior to state-of-the-art derivative-free optimisation methods in solving nonsmooth problems while remaining competitive in terms of efficiency.

Three classes of quadratic vector fields for which the Kahan discretization is the root of a generalised Manin transformation

We apply Kahan's discretisation method to three classes of 2-dimensional quadratic vector fields with quadratic, resp cubic, resp quartic Hamiltonians. We show that the maps obtained in this way can be geometrically understood as the composition of two involutions, one of which is a (linear) symmetry switch, and the other is a generalised Manin involution.

QRT maps and related Laurent systems

In recent work it was shown how recursive factorisation of certain QRT maps leads to Somos-4 and Somos-5 recurrences with periodic coefficients, and to a fifth-order recurrence with the Laurent property. Here we recursively factorise the 12-parameter symmetric QRT map, given by a second-order recurrence, to obtain a system of three coupled recurrences which possesses the Laurent property. As degenerate special cases, we first derive systems of two coupled recurrences corresponding to the 5-parameter multiplicative and additive symmetric QRT maps. In all cases, the Laurent property is established using a generalisation of a result due to Hickerson, and exact formulae for degree growth are found from ultradiscrete (tropical) analogues of the recurrences. For the general 18-parameter QRT map it is shown that the components of the iterates can be written as a ratio of quantities that satisfy the same Somos-7 recurrence.
