Some integrable maps and their Hirota bilinear forms

We introduce a two-parameter family of birational maps, which reduces to a family previously found by Demskoi, Tran, van der Kamp and Quispel (DTKQ) when one of the parameters is set to zero. The study of the singularity confinement pattern for these maps leads to the introduction of a tau function satisfying a homogeneous recurrence which has the Laurent property, and the tropical (or ultradiscrete) analogue of this homogeneous recurrence confirms the quadratic degree growth found empirically by Demskoi et al. We prove that the tau function also satisfies two different bilinear equations, each of which is a reduction of the Hirota-Miwa equation (also known as the discrete KP equation, or the octahedron recurrence). Furthermore, these bilinear equations are related to reductions of particular two-dimensional integrable lattice equations, of discrete KdV or discrete Toda type. These connections, as well as the cluster algebra structure of the bilinear equations, allow a direct construction of Poisson brackets, Lax pairs and first integrals for the birational maps. As a consequence of the latter results, we show how each member of the family can be lifted to a system that is integrable in the Liouville sense, clarifying observations made previously in the original DTKQ case.

Why geometric integration?

Since its emergence, GNI has become the new paradigm in numerical solution of ODEs, while making significant inroads into numerical PDEs. As often, yesterday's revolutionaries became the new establishment. This is an excellent moment to pause and take stock. Have all the major challenges been achieved, all peaks scaled, leaving just a tidying-up operation? Is there still any point to GNI as a separate activity or should it be considered as a victim of its own success and its practitioners depart to fields anew - including new areas of activity that have been fostered or enabled by GNI?

Volume Preservation by Runge-Kutta Methods

It is a classical theorem of Liouville that Hamiltonian systems preserve volume in phase space. Any symplectic Runge-Kutta method will respect this property for such systems, but it has been shown that no B-Series method can be volume preserving for all volume preserving vector fields (BIT 47 (2007) 351-378 and IMA J. Numer. Anal. 27 (2007) 381-405). In this paper we show that despite this result, symplectic Runge-Kutta methods can be volume preserving for a much larger class of vector fields than Hamiltonian systems, and discuss how some Runge-Kutta methods can preserve a modified measure exactly.

Discretization of polynomial vector fields by polarization

A novel integration method for quadratic vector fields was introduced by Kahan in 1993. Subsequently, it was shown that Kahan's method preserves a (modified) measure and energy when applied to quadratic Hamiltonian vector fields. Here we generalize Kahan's method to cubic resp. higher degree polynomial vector fields and show that the resulting discretization also preserves modified versions of the measure and energy when applied to cubic resp. higher degree polynomial Hamiltonian vector fields.

Twisted reductions of integrable lattice equations, and their Lax representations

It is well known that from two-dimensional lattice equations one can derive one-dimensional lattice equations by imposing periodicity in some direction. In this paper we generalize the periodicity condition by adding a symmetry transformation and apply this idea to autonomous and non-autonomous lattice equations. As results of this approach, we obtain new reductions of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries equation, discrete modified Korteweg-de Vries equation and the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation. We will also describe a direct method for obtaining Lax representations for the reduced equations.

Integrability of reductions of the discrete KdV and potential KdV equations

We study the integrability of mappings obtained as reductions of the discrete Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and of two copies of the discrete potential Korteweg-de Vries equation (pKdV). We show that the mappings corresponding to the discrete KdV equation, which can be derived from the latter, are completely integrable in the Liouville-Arnold sense. The mappings associated with two copies of the pKdV equation are also shown to be integrable.

Projection methods and discrete gradient methods for preserving first integrals of ODEs

In this paper we study linear projection methods for approximating the solution and simultaneously preserving first integrals of autonomous ordinary differential equations. We show that (linear) projection methods are a subset of discrete gradient methods. In particular, each projection method is equivalent to a class of discrete gradient methods (where the choice of discrete gradient is arbitrary) and earlier results for discrete gradient methods also apply to projection methods. Thus we prove that for the case of preserving one first integral, under certain mild conditions, the numerical solution for a projection method exists and is locally unique, and preserves the order of accuracy of the underlying method. In the case of preserving multiple first integrals the relationship between projection methods and discrete gradient methods persists. Moreover, numerical examples show that similar existence and order results should also hold for the multiple integral case. For completeness we show how existing projection methods from the literature fit into our general framework.

Discrete Painlevé equations and their Lax pairs as reductions of integrable lattice equations

We present a method of determining a Lax representation for similarity reductions of autonomous and non-autonomous partial difference equations. This method may be used to obtain Lax representations that are general enough to provide the Lax integrability for entire hierarchies of reductions. A main result is, as an example of this framework, how we may obtain the q-Painlevé equation whose group of Bäcklund transformations is an affine Weyl group of type E_6^{(1)} as a similarity reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation.

Discrete gradient methods for preserving a first integral of an ordinary differential equation

In this paper we consider discrete gradient methods for approximating the solution and preserving a first integral (also called a constant of motion) of autonomous ordinary differential equations. We prove under mild conditions for a large class of discrete gradient methods that the numerical solution exists and is locally unique, and that for arbitrary $p \in \mathbb{N}$ we may construct a method that is of order $p$. In the proofs of these results we also show that the constants in the time step constraint and the error bounds may be chosen independently from the distance to critical points of the first integral. In the case when the first integral is quadratic, for arbitrary $p \in \mathbb{N}$, we have devised a new method that is linearly implicit at each time step and of order $p$. This new method has significant advantages in terms of efficiency. We illustrate our theory with a numerical example.

Preserving energy resp. dissipation in numerical PDEs using the "Average Vector Field" method

We give a systematic method for discretizing Hamiltonian partial differential equations (PDEs) with constant symplectic structure, while preserving their energy exactly. The same method, applied to PDEs with constant dissipative structure, also preserves the correct monotonic decrease of energy. The method is illustrated by many examples. In the Hamiltonian case these include: the sine-Gordon, Korteweg-de Vries, nonlinear Schrodinger, (linear) time-dependent Schrodinger, and Maxwell equations. In the dissipative case the examples are: the Allen-Cahn, Cahn-Hilliard, Ginzburg-Landau, and heat equations.

Involutivity of integrals for sine-Gordon, modified KdV and potential KdV maps

Closed form expressions in terms of multi-sums of products have been given in \cite{Tranclosedform, KRQ} of integrals of sine-Gordon, modified Korteweg-de Vries and potential Korteweg-de Vries maps obtained as so-called $(p,-1)$-traveling wave reductions of the corresponding partial difference equations. We prove the involutivity of these integrals with respect to recently found symplectic structures for those maps. The proof is based on explicit formulae for the Poisson brackets between multi-sums of products.

The staircase method: integrals for periodic reductions of integrable lattice equations

We show, in full generality, that the staircase method provides integrals for mappings, and correspondences, obtained as traveling wave reductions of (systems of) integrable partial difference equations. We apply the staircase method to a variety of equations, including the Korteweg-De Vries equation, the five-point Bruschi-Calogero-Droghei equation, the QD-algorithm, and the Boussinesq system. We show that, in all these cases, if the staircase method provides r integrals for an n-dimensional mapping, with 2r<n, then one can introduce q<= 2r variables, which reduce the dimension of the mapping from n to q. These dimension-reducing variables are obtained as joint invariants of k-symmetries of the mappings. Our results support the idea that often the staircase method provides sufficiently many integrals for the periodic reductions of integrable lattice equations to be completely integrable. We also study reductions on other quad-graphs than the regular 2D lattice, and we prove linear growth of the multi-valuedness of iterates of high-dimensional correspondences obtained as reductions of the QD-algorithm.

An integrating factor matrix method to find first integrals

In this paper we developed an integrating factor matrix method to derive conditions for the existence of first integrals. We use this novel method to obtain first integrals, along with the conditions for their existence, for two and three dimensional Lotka-Volterra systems with constant terms. The results are compared to previous results obtained by other methods.

The saddle-node-transcritical bifurcation in a population model with constant rate harvesting

We study the interaction of saddle-node and transcritical bifurcations in a Lotka-Volterra model with a constant term representing harvesting or migration. Because some of the equilibria of the model lie on an invariant coordinate axis, both the saddle-node and the transcritical bifurcations are of codimension one. Their interaction can be associated with either a single or a double zero eigenvalue. We show that in the former case, the local bifurcation diagram is given by a nonversal unfolding of the cusp bifurcation whereas in the latter case it is a nonversal unfolding of a degenerate Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. We present a simple model for each of the two cases to illustrate the possible unfoldings. We analyse the consequences of the generic phase portraits for the Lotka-Volterra system.

Lagrangian multiform structure for the lattice KP system

We present a Lagrangian for the bilinear discrete KP (or Hirota-Miwa) equation. Furthermore, we show that this Lagrangian can be extended to a Lagrangian 3-form when embedded in a higher dimensional lattice, obeying a closure relation. Thus we establish the multiform structure as proposed in arXiv:0903.4086v1 [nlin.SI] in a higher dimensional case.
