Continuously sheared granular matter reproduces in detail seismicity laws

We introduce a shear experiment that quantitatively reproduces the main laws of seismicity. By continuously and slowly shearing a compressed monolayer of disks in a ring-like geometry, our system delivers events of frictional failures with energies following a Gutenberg-Richter law. Moreover foreshocks and aftershocks are described by Omori laws and inter-event times also follow exactly the same distribution as real earthquakes, showing the existence of memory of past events. Other features of real earthquakes qualitatively reproduced in our system are both the existence of a quiescence preceding mainshocks, as well as magnitude correlations linked to large quakes. The key ingredient of the dynamics is the nature of the force network, governing the distribution of frictional thresholds.

Deconstructing the Low-Vol Anomaly

We study several aspects of the so-called low-vol and low-beta anomalies, some already documented (such as the universality of the effect over different geographical zones), others hitherto not clearly discussed in the literature. Our most significant message is that the low-vol anomaly is the result of two independent effects. One is the striking negative correlation between past realized volatility and dividend yield. Second is the fact that ex-dividend returns themselves are weakly dependent on the volatility level, leading to better risk-adjusted returns for low-vol stocks. This effect is further amplified by compounding. We find that the low-vol strategy is not associated to short term reversals, nor does it qualify as a Risk-Premium strategy, since its overall skewness is slightly positive. For practical purposes, the strong dividend bias and the resulting correlation with other valuation metrics (such as Earnings to Price or Book to Price) does make the low-vol strategies to some extent redundant, at least for equities.

Stellar populations in a standard ISOGAL field in the Galactic disk

We aim to identify the stellar populations (mostly red giants and young stars) detected in the ISOGAL survey at 7 and 15micron towards a field (LN45) in the direction l=-45, b=0.0. The sources detected in the survey of the Galactic plane by the Infrared Space Observatory are characterized based on colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. We combine the ISOGAL catalog with the data from surveys such as 2MASS and GLIMPSE. Interstellar extinction and distance are estimated using the red clump stars detected by 2MASS in combination with the isochrones for the AGB/RGB branch. Absolute magnitudes are thus derived and the stellar populations are identified based on their absolute magnitudes and their infrared excess. A standard approach to the analysis of ISOGAL disk observations has been established. We identify several hundred RGB/AGB stars and 22 candidate young stellar objects in the direction of this field in an area of 0.16 deg^2. An over-density of stellar sources is found at distances corresponding to the distance of the Scutum-Crux spiral arm. In addition, we determine mass-loss rates of AGB-stars using dust radiative transfer models from the literature.

Hyper-Raman scattering analysis of the vibrations in vitreous boron oxide

Hyper-Raman scattering has been measured on vitreous boron oxide, $v-$B$_2$O$_3$. This spectroscopy, complemented with Raman scattering and infrared absorption, reveals the full set of vibrations that can be observed with light. A mode analysis is performed based on the local D$_{3h}$ symmetry of BO$_3$ triangles and B$_3$O$_3$ boroxol rings. The results show that in $v-$B$_2$O$_3$ the main spectral components can be succesfully assigned using this relatively simple model. In particular, it can be shown that the hyper-Raman boson peak arises from external modes that correspond mainly to librational motions of rigid boroxol rings.

Discovery of new nearby L and late-M dwarfs at low Galactic latitude from the DENIS database

We report new nearby L and late-M dwarfs (d_phot <= 30 pc) discovered in our search for nearby ultracool dwarfs (I-J >= 3.0, later than M8.0) at low Galactic latitude (|b| < 15 degr) over 4,800 square degrees in the DENIS database. We used late-M (>=M8.0), L, and T dwarfs with accurate trigonometric parallaxes to calibrate the M_J versus I-J colour-luminosity relation. The resulting photometric distances have standard errors of ~15%, which we used to select candidates d_phot <= 30 pc. We measured proper motions from multi-epoch images found in the public archives ALADIN, DSS, 2MASS, DENIS, with at least three distinct epochs and time baselines of 10 to 21 years. We then used a Maximum Reduced Proper Motion cutoff to select 28 candidates as ultracool dwarfs (M8.0--L8.0) and to reject one as a distant red star. No T dwarf candidates were found in this search which required an object to be detected in all three DENIS bands. Our low-resolution optical spectra confirmed that 26 of them were indeed ultracool dwarfs, with spectral types from M8.0 to L5.5. Two contaminants and one rejected by the Maximum Reduced Proper Motion cutoff were all reddened F-K main sequence stars. 20 of these 26 ultracool dwarfs are new nearby ultracool dwarf members, three L dwarfs within 15 pc with one L3.5 at only ~10 pc. We determine a stellar density of \barΦ_J cor=(1.64 +- 0.46).10^{-3} dwarfs pc^{-3} mag^{-1} over 11.1 <= M_J <= 13.1 based on that sample of M8--L3.5 ultracool dwarfs. Our ultracool dwarf density value is in good agreement with the Cruz et al. measurement of the ultracool dwarf density at high Galactic latitude.

Discovery of a nearby M9 dwarf

We report the discovery of a new M9.0 dwarf at only 8.2 pc, which we identified in our search for nearby ultracool dwarf (I-J >= 3.0, later than M8.0) in the DENIS database. We measure a very high proper motion of 2.5 arc-sec/yr. The PC3 index measured from its low-resolution spectrum gives a spectrophotometric distance of 8.2 pc. This makes it the third closest M9.0 dwarf.

Hyper-Raman scattering from vitreous boron oxide: coherent enhancement of the boson peak

Hyper-Raman scattering spectra of vitreous B$_2$O$_3$ are reported and compared to Raman scattering results. The main features are indexed in terms of vibrations of structural units. Particular attention is given to the low frequency boson peak which is shown to relate to out-of-plane librations of B$_3$O$_3$ boroxol rings and BO$_3$ triangles. Its hyper-Raman strength is comparable to that of cooperative polar modes. It points to a sizeable coherent enhancement of the hyper-Raman signal compared to the Raman one. This is explained by the symmetry of the structural units.

Extinctions at 7um and 15um from the ISOGAL survey

The extinction laws at 7um and 15um are derived for more than 120 sightlines in the inner Galactic plane based on the ISOGAL survey data and the near-infrared data from DENIS and 2MASS. The tracers are the ISOGAL point sources with [7]-[15]<0.4 which are RGB tip stars or early AGB stars with moderate mass loss. They have well-defined intrinsic color indices (J-Ks)_0, (Ks-[7])_0 and (Ks-[15])_0. By a linear fitting of the observed color indices Ks-[7] and Ks-[15] to the observed J-Ks, we obtain the ratio between the E(Ks-[7]) and E(Ks-[15]) color excesses and E(J-Ks). We infer the selective extinctions at 7 and 15um in terms of the near-infrared extinction in the Ks band. The distribution of the derived extinctions around 7 micron (A_7) is well represented by a Gaussian function, with the peak at about 0.47A_Ks and ranging from 0.33 to 0.55A_Ks (using the near-infrared extinctions of Rieke & Lebovsky 1985). There is some evidence that A_7/A_Ks may vary significantly depending on the line of sight. The derived selective extinction at 15um suffers uncertainty mainly from the dispersion in the intrinsic color index (Ks-[15])_0 which is affected by dust emission from mass-losing AGB stars. The peak value of A_15 is around 0.40A_Ks.

Self-generated Self-similar Traffic

Self-similarity in the network traffic has been studied from several aspects: both at the user side and at the network side there are many sources of the long range dependence. Recently some dynamical origins are also identified: the TCP adaptive congestion avoidance algorithm itself can produce chaotic and long range dependent throughput behavior, if the loss rate is very high. In this paper we show that there is a close connection between the static and dynamic origins of self-similarity: parallel TCPs can generate the self-similarity themselves, they can introduce heavily fluctuations into the background traffic and produce high effective loss rate causing a long range dependent TCP flow, however, the dropped packet ratio is low.

ISOGAL: A deep survey of the obscured inner Milky Way with ISO at 7 and 15 micron and with DENIS in the near-infrared

The ISOGAL project is an infrared survey of specific regions sampling the Galactic Plane selected to provide information on Galactic structure,stellar populations,stellar mass-loss and the recent star formation history of the inner disk and Bulge of the Galaxy. ISOGAL combines 7 and 15 micron ISOCAM observations - with a resolution of 6'' at worst - with DENIS IJKs data to determine the nature of the sources and theinterstellar extinction. We have observed about 16 square degrees with a sensitivity approaching 10-20mJy, detecting ~10^5 sources,mostly AGB stars,red giants and young stars. The main features of the ISOGAL survey and the observations are summarized in this paper,together with a brief discussion of data processing and quality. The primary ISOGAL products are described briefly (a full description is given in Schuller et al. 2003, astro-ph/0304309): viz. the images and theISOGAL-DENIS five-wavelength point source catalogue. The main scientific results already derived or in progress are summarized. These include astrometrically calibrated 7 and 15um images,determining structures of resolved sources; identification and properties of interstellar dark clouds; quantification of the infrared extinction law and source dereddening; analysis of red giant and (especially) AGB stellar populations in the central Bulge,determining luminosity,presence of circumstellar dust and mass--loss rate,and source classification,supplemented in some cases by ISO/CVF spectroscopy; detection of young stellar objects of diverse types,especially in the inner Bulge with information about the present and recent star formation rate; identification of foreground sources with mid-IR excess. These results are the subject of about 25 refereed papers published or in preparation.

Explanatory Supplement of the ISOGAL-DENIS Point Source Catalogue

We present version 1.0 of the ISOGAL-DENIS Point Source Catalogue (PSC), containing more than 100,000 point sources detected at 7 and/or 15 micron in the ISOGAL survey of the inner Galaxy with the ISOCAM instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). These sources are cross-identified, wherever possible, with near-infrared (0.8-2.2 micron) data from the DENIS survey. The overall surface covered by the ISOGAL survey is about 16 square degrees, mostly (95%) distributed near the Galactic plane (|b| < 1 deg), where the source extraction can become confusion limited and perturbed by the high background emission. Therefore, special care has been taken aimed at limiting the photometric error to ~0.2 magnitude down to a sensitivity limit of typically 10 mJy. The present paper gives a complete description of the entries and the information which can be found in this catalogue, as well as a detailed discussion of the data processing and the quality checks which have been completed. The catalogue is available via the VizieR Service at the Centre de Données Astronomiques de Strasbourg (CDS, http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/VizieR/) and also via the server at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (http://www-isogal.iap.fr/). A more complete version of this paper, including a detailed description of the data processing, is available in electronic form through the ADS service.

Stellar sources in the ISOGAL intermediate bulge fields

We present a study of ISOGAL sources in the "intermediate" galactic bulge ($|$$l$$|$ $<$ 2$^\circ$, $|$$b$$|$ $\sim$ 1$^\circ$--4$^\circ$), observed by ISOCAM at 7 and 15 $μm$. In combination with near-infrared (I, J, K$_{\rm s}$) data of DENIS survey, complemented by 2MASS data, we discuss the nature of the ISOGAL sources, their luminosities, the interstellar extinction and the mass-loss rates. A large fraction of the 1464 detected sources at 15 $μm$ are AGB stars above the RGB tip, a number of them show an excess in ([7]-[15])$_{\rm 0}$ and (K$_{\rm s}$-[15])$_{\rm 0}$ colours, characteristic of mass-loss. The latter, especially (K$_{\rm s}$-[15])$_{\rm 0}$, provide estimates of the mass-loss rates and show their distribution in the range 10$^{-8}$ to 10$^{-5}$ M$_{\rm \odot}$/yr.

The ISOGAL field FC--01863+00035: Mid-IR interstellar extinction and stellar populations

A 0.35\degr $\times$ 0.29\degr field centered at $l$=--18.63\degr, $b$=0.35\degr was observed during the ISOGAL survey by ISOCAM imaging at 7$μ$m and 15{\rm $μ$m}. 648 objects were detected and their brightness are measured. By combining with the DENIS data in the near-infrared J and K$_{\rm S}$ bands, one derives the extinction at 7{\rm $μ$m} through ${\rm A_{K_{\rm S}}-A_7= 0.35 (A_J-A_{K_{\rm S}})}$ which yields A$_{7}$/A$_{\it V}$ $\sim$0.03 from the near-IR extinction values of van de Hulst--Glass (Glass 1999). The extinction structure along the line of sight is then determined from the values of J--K$_{\rm S}$ or K$_{\rm S}$--[7] of the ISOGAL sources identified as RGB or early AGB stars with mild mass-loss. The distribution of A$_{\it V}$ ranges from 0 to $\sim$45 and it reflects the concentration of the extinction in the spiral arms. Based on their locations in color-magnitude diagrams and a few cross-identifications with IRAS and MSX sources, the nature of objects is discussed in comparison with the case of a low extinction field in Baade's Window. Most of the objects are either AGB stars with moderate mass loss rate or luminous RGB stars. Some of them may be AGB stars with high mass loss rate. In addition, a few young stellar objects (YSOs) are present.

New neighbours: V. 35 DENIS late-M dwarfs between 10 and 30 parsecs

This paper reports updated results on our systematic mining of the DENIS database for nearby very cool M-dwarfs (M6V-M8V, 2.0<I-J<3.0, photometric distance within 30 pc), We calibrate the DENIS (M_I, I-J) colour-luminosity relationship from M dwarfs with well measured parallaxes (HIP, GCTP,...), obtaining distance errors for single dwarfs of 25%. Using proper motions measured on archive Schmidt plates for stars that meet the photometric selection criteria, we eliminate the giants by a Reduced Proper Motion cutoff, which is significantly more selective than a simple proper motion cutoff. Here we present new data for 62 red dwarf candidates selected over 5700 square degrees in the DENIS database. 26 of those originate in the 2100 square degrees analysed in Paper I, with improved parameters here, and 36 were found in 3600 additional square degrees. 25 of those are new nearby dwarfs. We determine from that sample of 62 stars a stellar density for 12.0<M_I<14.0 of 2.2(+-0.4)E-3 stars/pc^3/mag. This value is consistent with photometric luminosity functions measured from deeper and smaller-field observations, but not with the nearby star luminosity function. In addition we cross-identified the NLTT and DENIS catalogues to find 15 similar stars, in parts of the sky not yet covered by the colour-selected search.

An Alternative Method to Deduce Bubble Dynamics in Single Bubble Sonoluminescence Experiments

In this paper we present an experimental approach that allows to deduce the important dynamical parameters of single sonoluminescing bubbles (pressure amplitude, ambient radius, radius-time curve) The technique is based on a few previously confirmed theoretical assumptions and requires the knowledge of quantities such as the amplitude of the electric excitation and the phase of the flashes in the acoustic period. These quantities are easily measurable by a digital oscilloscope, avoiding the cost of expensive lasers, or ultrafast cameras of previous methods. We show the technique on a particular example and compare the results with conventional Mie scattering. We find that within the experimental uncertainties these two techniques provide similar results.

Low resolution spectroscopy of ISOGAL sources: Search for early-type stars with infrared excess

An analysis of low resolution spectra and infared data of 29 ISOGAL-DENIS sources with mid-IR excess is presented. Eight ISOGAL sources from our sample with 7-15 micron excess are found to be B and A-type stars, some of them with emission lines. Two ISOGAL sources, J175614.4-240831 (B3-4IIIe) and J173845.3-312403 (B7III), show a bump between 5000 and 6000 Angstroem which maybe attributed to extended red emission (ERE). Some of the B,A and F-type giants with a large infrared excess might be in the post-AGB phase. For about 50% of the sources in this preliminary study, a nearby second (or even multiple) component was found. Such sources, in particular two B-stars, are not discussed when the probability of the optical spectrum being associated with the ISOGAL source is low. These results confirm that the DENIS-ISOGAL I-J/K-[15] diagram is the most suitable diagram to distinguish between early (AB) and late spectral types (KM). It provides the most useful tool to systematically search for nearby early-type stars with an infrared excess among the background of distant AGB stars in ISOGAL fields of the Galactic disk.

New neighbours: IV. 30 DENIS late-M dwarfs between 15 and 30 parsecs

We present 30 new nearby (d<30 pc) red dwarf candidates, with estimated spectral types M6 to M8. 26 were directly selected from the DENIS database, and another 4 were first extracted from the LHS catalogue and cross-identified with a DENIS counterpart. Their proper motions were measured on the MAMA measuring machine from plates spanning 13 to 48 years, and are larger than 0.1 arcsec/yr, ruling out the possibility that they are giants. Their distances were estimated from the DENIS colours and IR colour-magnitude relations and range between 15 and 30 pc.

Mass-Losing Semiregular Variable Stars in Baade's Windows

By cross-correlating the results of two recent large-scale surveys, the general properties of a well defined sample of semi-regular variable stars have been determined. ISOGAL mid-infrared photometry and MACHO lightcurves are assembled for approximately 300 stars in the Baade's Windows of low extinction towards the Galactic bulge. These stars are mainly giants of late M spectral type, evolving along the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). They are found to possess a wide and continuous distribution of pulsation periods and to obey an approximate log~period -- bolometric magnitude relation or set of such relations. Approximate mass-loss rates in the range of 1e-8 to 5e-7 M_sun per year are derived from ISOGAL mid-infrared photometry and models of stellar spectra adjusted for the presence of optically-thin circumstellar silicate dust. Mass-loss rates depend on luminosity and pulsation period. Some stars lose mass as rapidly as short-period Miras but do not show Mira-like amplitudes. A period of 70 days or longer is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for mass loss to occur. For AGB stars in the mass-loss ranges that we observe, the functional dependence of mass-loss rate on temperature and luminosity is found to be in agreement with recent theoretical predictions. If we include our mass-loss rates with a sample of extreme mass-losing AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we get the general result for AGB stars that mass-loss rate is proportional to luminosity^{2.7}, valid for AGB stars with 10^{-8} to 10^{-4} M_sun per year (Abridged).
