Mass-Losing Semiregular Variable Stars in Baade's Windows

By cross-correlating the results of two recent large-scale surveys, the general properties of a well defined sample of semi-regular variable stars have been determined. ISOGAL mid-infrared photometry and MACHO lightcurves are assembled for approximately 300 stars in the Baade's Windows of low extinction towards the Galactic bulge. These stars are mainly giants of late M spectral type, evolving along the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). They are found to possess a wide and continuous distribution of pulsation periods and to obey an approximate log~period -- bolometric magnitude relation or set of such relations. Approximate mass-loss rates in the range of 1e-8 to 5e-7 M_sun per year are derived from ISOGAL mid-infrared photometry and models of stellar spectra adjusted for the presence of optically-thin circumstellar silicate dust. Mass-loss rates depend on luminosity and pulsation period. Some stars lose mass as rapidly as short-period Miras but do not show Mira-like amplitudes. A period of 70 days or longer is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for mass loss to occur. For AGB stars in the mass-loss ranges that we observe, the functional dependence of mass-loss rate on temperature and luminosity is found to be in agreement with recent theoretical predictions. If we include our mass-loss rates with a sample of extreme mass-losing AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, we get the general result for AGB stars that mass-loss rate is proportional to luminosity^{2.7}, valid for AGB stars with 10^{-8} to 10^{-4} M_sun per year (Abridged).

DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1: An M9 dwarfs at about 4 pc

We present the discovery of a previously unknown member of the immediate solar neighbourhood, DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1 (hereafter DENIS 1048-39), identified while mining the DENIS database for new nearby stars. A HIRES echelle spectrum obtained with the 10-m Keck telescope shows that it is an M9 dwarf. DENIS 1048-39 has a very bright apparent magnitude (I=12.67) for its spectral type and colour (I-J=3.07), and is therefore very nearby. If it is single its distance is only 4.1 +- 0.6pc, ranking it as between our twelfth and fortyth closest neighbour. It is also the closest star or brown dwarf with a spectral type later than M7V. Its proper motion was determined through comparison of Sky atlas Schmidt plates, scanned by the MAMA microdensitometer, with the DENIS images. At 1.53"/yr it further attests the closeness of DENIS 1048-39, and hence its dwarf status. These characteristics make it an obvious target for further detailed studies.

The DENIS Point Source Catalogue towards the Magellanic Clouds

We have compiled the near infrared Point Source Catalogue (PSC) towards the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) extracted from the data obtained with the Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky - DENIS (Epchtein et al. 1997). The catalogue covers an area of of 19.87* 16 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(5h27m20s, -69o00'00'') for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 14.7* 10 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(h02m40s, -73o00'00'' for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) at the epoch J2000. It contains about 1300000 sources towards the LMC and 300000 sources towards the SMC each detected in at least 2 of the 3 photometric bands involved in the survey (I, J, Ks). 70% of the detected sources are true members of the Magellanic Clouds, respectively and consist mainly of red giants, asymptotic giant branch stars and super-giants. The observations have all been made with the same instrument and the data have been calibrated and reduced uniformly. The catalogue provides a homogeneous set of photometric data.

Interstellar extinction towards the inner Galactic Bulge

DENIS observations in the J (1.2 micron) and K_S (2.15 micron) bands together with isochrones calculated for the RGB and AGB phase are used to draw an extinction map of the inner Galactic Bulge. The uncertainty in this method is mainly limited by the optical depth of the Bulge itself. A comparison with fields of known extinction shows a very good agreement. We present an extinction map for the inner Galactic Bulge (approx. 20 sq. deg.)

ISOGAL-DENIS detection of red giants with weak mass loss in the Galactic Bulge

The ISOGAL project is a survey of the stellar populations, structure, and recent star formation history of the inner disk and bulge of the Galaxy. ISOGAL combines 15 and 7micron ISOCAM observations with DENIS IJKs data to determine the nature of a source and the interstellar extinction. In this paper we report an ISOGAL study of a small field in the inner Galactic Bulge (l=0deg, b=1.0deg, area=0.035 sq. deg) as a prototype of the larger area ISOGAL survey of the inner Galaxy. The five wavelengths of ISOGAL+DENIS, together with the relatively low and constant extinction in front of this specific field, allow reliable determination of the nature of the sources. The primary scientific result of this paper is evidence that the most numerous class of ISOGAL 15micron sources are Red Giants in the Galactic bulge and central disk, with luminosities just above or close to the RGB tip and weak mass-loss rates. They form loose sequences in the magnitude-colour diagrams [15]/Ks-[15] and [15]/[7]-[15]. Their large excesses at 15micron with respect to 2micron and 7micron is due to circumstellar dust produced by mass-loss at low rates. These ISOGAL results are the first systematic evidence and study of dust emission at this early stage (''Intermediate'' AGB), before the onset of the large mass-loss phase. It is thus well established that efficient dust formation is already associated with such low mass-loss rates during this early phase.

ISOGAL Survey of Baade's Windows in the Mid-infrared

The ISOGAL mid-infrared survey of areas close to the Galactic Plane aims to determine their stellar content and its possible bearing on the history of the Galaxy. The NGC6522 and Sgr I Baade's Windows of low obscuration towards the inner parts of the Bulge represent ideal places in which to calibrate and understand the ISOGAL colour-magnitude diagrams. The survey observations were made with the ISOCAM instrument of the ISO satellite. The filter bands chosen were LW2(~7 microns) and LW3(~15 microns). The results presented here show that most of the detected objects are late M-type giants on the AGB, with a cut-off for those earlier than M3-M4. The most luminous members of these two Bulge fields at 7 microns are the Mira variables. However, it is evident that they represent the end of a sequence of increasing 15 micron dust emission which commences with M giants of earlier sub-type. In observations of late-type giants the ISOCAM 15 micron band is mainly sensitive to the cool silicate or aluminate dust shells which overwhelm the photospheric emission. However, in ordinary M-giant stars, the 7 micron band is not strongly affected by dust emission and may be influenced instead by absorption. The nu2 band of water at 6.25 microns and the SiO fundamental at 7.9 microns are likely contribitors to this effect. A group of late M stars has been found which vary little or not at all but have infrared colours typical of well-developed dust shells. Their luminosities are similar to those of 200-300 day Miras but they have slightly redder [7]-[15] colours which form an extension of the ordinary M giant sequence. The Mira dust shells show a mid-infrared [7]-[15] colour-period relation. ca 700 days.

Scalar and Vector Leptoquark Pair Production at Hadron Colliders: Signal and Backgrounds

We perform a systematic analysis of scalar and vector leptoquark pair production at the Fermilab Tevatron and at the CERN LHC. We evaluate signal expectations and background levels for the processes pp (p ppar) -> 2 jets + e^{+} + e^{-} and 2 jets + e + missing p_T. The Monte Carlo event generator ISAJET is used to simulate the experimental conditions at the current (Sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV, Luminosity=100 pb^{-1}) and upgraded (Luminosity=100 pb^{-1}) Tevatron as well as the LHC (Sqrt{s}=14 TeV, Luminosity=10 fb^{-1}). Depending on the luminosity, and assuming a branching ratio B(LQ -> eq)=0.5, we find a discovery reach up to 170 (255) GeV for scalar leptoquarks at the current (upgraded) Tevatron. Similarly, we find vector leptoquarks to be detectable at masses below 300 (400) GeV depending on the coupling. At the LHC, the discovery reach is enhanced to 1 TeV for scalar leptoquarks and to 1.5 TeV for vectors.

The Inner Galaxy resolved at IJK using DENIS data

We present the analysis of three colour optical/near-infrared images, in IJK, taken for the DENIS project. The region considered covers 17.4 square deg and lies within |l|<5 deg, |b|<1.5 deg. The adopted methods for deriving photometry and astrometry in these crowded images, together with an analysis of the deficiencies nevertheless remaining, are presented. The numbers of objects extracted in I,J and K are 748000, 851000 and 659000 respectively, to magnitude limits of 17,15 and 13. 80% completeness levels typically fall at magnitudes 16, 13 and 10 respectively, fainter by about 2 magnitudes than the usual DENIS limits due to the crowded nature of these fields. A simple model to describe the disk contribution to the number counts is constructed, and parameters for the dust layer derived. We find that a formal fit of parameters for the dust plane, from these data in limited directions, gives a scalelength and scaleheight of 3.4+-1.0 kpc and 40+-5 pc respectively, and a solar position 14.0+-2.5 pc below the plane. This latter value is likely to be affected by localised dust asymmetries. We convolve a detailed model of the systematic and random errors in the photometry with a simple model of the Galactic disk and dust distribution, to simulate expected colour-magnitude diagrams. These are in good agreement with the observed diagrams, allowing us to isolate those stars from the inner disk and bulge. After correcting for local dust-induced asymmetries, we find evidence for longitude-dependent asymmetries in the distant J and K sources, consistent with the general predictions of some Galactic bar models. We consider complementary L-band observations in a second paper.

Scalar Leptoquark Pair Production at the CERN LHC: Signal and Backgrounds

We present the results of an analysis for the pair production of scalar leptoquarks at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with energy=14 TeV and luminosity=10 fb^{-1} which includes the dominant sources of Standard Model background associated to this process: top-antitop, ZZ, WZ and Z*jj production. The top-antitop process provides the main source of background. We consider leptoquarks introduced in the framework of a superstring-inspired E_6 model. The leptoquark production is found to be dominant in all regions of parameter space for leptoquark masses below 750 GeV. We establish the discovery reach of the leptoquarks at 750 GeV (1 TeV) for a branching ratio of B(LQ -> eq)=0.5 (B=1).

Leptoquark pair production at the Fermilab Tevatron: Signal and backgrounds

We perform a Monte-Carlo simulation of scalar leptoquark pair production at the Tevatron (energy =1.8 TeV and luminosity =100 pb^{-1}) with ISAJET. We also investigate the dominant sources of Standard Model background: Z*jj, ZZ production and heavy quark top-antitop. We find that the top-antitop background is the most important except near the Z pole where the Z*jj background is peaked. We also evaluate the signal-to-background ratio and find a discovery reach of 130 GeV (170 GeV) for a branching ratio of B(LQ-> eq)=0.5 (B=1).

Skyrmions from a Born-Infeld Action

We consider a geometrically motivated Skyrme model based on a general covariant kinetic term proposed originally by Born and Infeld. We introduce this new term by generalizing the Born-Infeld action to a non-abelian $SU(2)$ gauge theory and by using the hidden gauge symmetry formalism. The static properties of the Skyrmion are then analyzed and compared with other Skyrme-like models.

Production of Pairs of Sleptoquarks in Hadron Colliders

We calculate the cross section for the production of pairs of scalar leptoquarks (sleptoquarks) in a supersymmetric $E_6$ model, at hadron colliders. We estimate higher order corrections by including $π^2$ terms induced by soft-gluon corrections. Discovery bounds on the sleptoquark mass are estimated at collider energies of 1.8, 2, and 4 TeV (Tevatron), and 16 TeV (LHC).
