Standard-like models from Intersecting D5-branes

We construct intersecting D5-brane orbifold models that yield the (non-supersymmetric) standard model up to vector-like matter and charged-singlet scalars. The models are constrained by the requirement that twisted tadpoles cancel, and that the gauge boson coupled to the weak hypercharge $U(1)_Y$ does not get a string-scale mass via a generalised Green-Schwarz mechanism. Gauge coupling constant ratios close to those measured are easily obtained for reasonable values of the parameters, consistently with having the string scale close to the electroweak scale, as required to avoid the hierarchy problem.

General Relativity, the Cosmological Constant and Modular Forms

Strong field (exact) solutions of the gravitational field equations of General Relativity in the presence of a Cosmological Constant are investigated. In particular, a full exact solution is derived within the inhomogeneous Szekeres-Szafron family of space-time line element with a nonzero Cosmological Constant. The resulting solution connects, in an intrinsic way, General Relativity with the theory of modular forms and elliptic curves. The homogeneous FLRW limit of the above space-time elements is recovered and we solve exactly the resulting Friedmann Robertson field equation with the appropriate matter density for generic values of the Cosmological Constant %Lambda and curvature constant K. A formal expression for the Hubble constant is derived. The cosmological implications of the resulting non-linear solutions are systematically investigated. Two particularly interesting solutions i) the case of a flat universe K=0, Lambda not= 0 and ii) a case with all three cosmological parameters non-zero, are described by elliptic curves with the property of complex multiplication and absolute modular invariant j=0 and 1728, respectively. The possibility that all non-linear solutions of General Relativity are expressed in terms of theta functions associated with Riemann-surfaces is discussed.

New Standard-like Models from Intersecting D4-Branes

We construct a new set of intersecting D4-brane models that yield the (non-supersymmetric) standard model up to vector-like matter and, in some cases, extra U(1) factors in the gauge group. The models are constrained by the requirement that twisted tadpoles cancel, and that the gauge boson coupled to the weak hypercharge U(1)_Y does not get a string-scale mass via a generalised Green-Schwarz mechanism. We find six-stack models that contain all of the Yukawa couplings to the tachyonic Higgs doublets that are needed to generate mass terms for the fermions at renormalisable level, but which have charged-singlet scalar tachyons and an unwanted extra U(1) gauge symmetry after spontaneous symmetry breaking. There is also a six-stack model without any unwanted gauged U(1) symmetries, but which only has the Yukawa couplings to generate masses for the u quarks and charged leptons. A particular eight-stack model is free of charged-singlet tachyons and has gauge coupling strengths whose ratios at the string scale are close to those measured at the electroweak scale, consistent with the string scale being at most a few TeV.

Standard-like models from intersecting D4-branes

We construct a one-parameter set of intersecting D4-brane models, with six stacks, that yield the (non-supersymmetric) standard model plus extra vector-like matter. Twisted tadpoles and gauge anomalies are cancelled, and the model contains all of the Yukawa couplings to the tachyonic Higgs doublets that are needed to generate mass terms for the fermions. A string scale in the range 1-10 TeV and a Higgs mass not much greater than the current bound is obtained for certain values of the parameters, consistently with the observed values of the gauge coupling constants.

Searching for string theories of the standard model

We briefly review attempts to construct string theories that yield the standard model, concentrating on models with a geometric interpretation. Calabi-Yau compactifications are discussed in the context of both the weakly coupled heterotic string and the strongly coupled version, heterotic M-theory. Similarly, we consider orbifold compactifications of weakly coupled heterotic theory and of Type II theories in the presence of D-branes. The latter allows a "bottom-up" construction that so far seems the most natural and direct route to the standard model.

Dark Matter Constraints in Heterotic M-Theory with Five-Brane Dominance

The phenomenological implications of the M-theory limit in which supersymmetry is broken by the auxiliary fields of five-brane moduli is investigated. Assuming that the lightest neutralino provides the dark matter in the universe, constraints on the sparticle spectrum are obtained. Direct detection rates for dark matter are estimated.

Supersymmetric Standard Models on D-Branes

Type IIB superstring models with the standard model gauge group on D3-branes and with massless matter associated with open strings joining D3-branes to D3-branes or D3-branes to ${\rm D}7_3$-branes are studied. Models with gauge coupling constant unification at an intermediate scale between about $10^{10}$ and $10^{12}$GeV and consistency with the observed value of $\sin^2 θ_W (M_Z)$ are obtained. Extra vector-like states and extra pairs of Higgs doublets play a crucial role.

Sparticle spectrum and dark matter in type I string theory with an intermediate scale

The supersymmetric particle spectrum is calculated in type I string theories formulated as orientifold compactifications of type IIB string theory. A string scale at an intermediate value of $10^{11}-10^{12}$ GeV is assumed and extra vector-like matter states are introduced to allow unification of gauge coupling constants to occur at this scale. The qualitative features of the spectrum are compared with Calabi-Yau compactification of the weakly coupled heterotic string and with the eleven dimensional supergravity limit of $M$-theory. Some striking differences are observed. Assuming that the lightest neutralino provides the dark matter in the universe, further constraints on the sparticle spectrum are obtained. Direct detection rates for dark matter are estimated.

A possible explanation of Galactic Velocity Rotation Curves in terms of a Cosmological Constant

This paper describes how the non-gravitational contribution to Galactic Velocity Rotation Curves can be explained in terms of a negative Cosmological Constant ($Λ$). It will be shown that the Cosmological Constant leads to a velocity contribution proportional to the radii, at large radii, and depending on the mass of the galaxy. This explanation contrasts with the usual interpretation that this effect is due to Dark Matter halos. The velocity rotation curve for the galaxy NGC 3198 will be analysed in detail, while several other galaxies will be studied superficially. The Cosmological Constant derived experimentally from the NGC 3198 data was found to be:$|Λ|_{Exp}= 5.0\times 10^{-56} cm^{-2}$. This compares favourably with the theoretical value obtained from the Large Number Hypothesis of: $|Λ|_{Theory}=2.1\times 10^{-56}cm^{-2}$. The Extended LNH is then used to define other cosmological parameters: gravitational modification constant, energy density, and the Cosmological Constant in terms of a fundamental length. A speculative theory for the evolution of the Universe is outlined where it is shown how the Universe can be defined, in any particular era, by two parameters: the fundamental length and the energy density of the vacuum for that epoch. The theory is applied to the time evolution of the universe where a possible explanation for the $ρ_{Planck}/ρ_Λ^{QH} \approx 10^{120}$ problem is proposed. The nature of the ''vacuum'' is reviewed along with a speculative approach for calculating the Cosmological Constant via formal M-theory.The experimentally derived results presented in this paper support a decelerating Universe, in contrast with recent indicationsfrom Type Ia Supernovae experiments, for an accelerating Universe.

CP violation including universal one-loop corrections and heterotic M-theory

CP violation by soft supersymmetry-breaking terms in orbifold compactifications is investigated. We include the universal part of the moduli-dependent threshold corrections in the construction of the non-perturbative effective potential due to gaugino-condensation. This allows interpolation of the magnitude of CP violating phases between the weakly and strongly coupled regimes. We find that the universal threshold corrections have a large effect on the CP violating phases in the weakly coupled regime.

A New Dark Matter Model for Galaxies

In this paper a new theory of Dark Matter is proposed. Experimental analysis of several Galaxies show how the non-gravitational contribution to galactic Velocity Rotation Curves can be interpreted as that due to the Cosmological Constant $Λ$. The experimentally determined values for $Λ$ are found to be consistent with those expected from Cosmological Constraints. The Cosmological Constant is interpreted as leading to a constant energy density which in turn can be used to partly address the energy deficit problem (Dark Energy) of the Universe. The work presented here leads to the conclusion that the Cosmological Constant is negative and that the universe is de-accelerating. This is in clear contradiction to the Type Ia Supernovae results which support an accelerating universe.

Sparticle spectrum in M-theory with five-brane dominance

The phenomenological implications of the M-theory limit in which supersymmetry is broken by the F-terms of five-brane moduli is investigated. In particular we calculate the supersymmetric spectrum subject to constraints of correct electroweak symmetry breaking. We find interesting differences especially in the squark sector compared with $M$-theory scenarios with standard embedding and weakly-coupled Calabi-Yau compactifications in the large $T$-limit.

Cosmological Inflation with orbifold moduli as inflatons

Cosmological inflation is studied in the case where the inflaton is the overall modulus $T$ for an orbifold. General forms of the (non-perturbative) superpotential are considered to ensure that $G=K+{\rm ln}|W|^2$ is modular invariant. We find generically that these models do not produce a potential flat enough for slow roll to a supersymmetric minimum, although we do find a model which produces up to 20 e-folds of inflation to a non-supersymmetric minimum.

M-theory dark matter

The phenomenological implications of the eleven dimensional limit of $M$-theory (strongly coupled $E_8\times E_8$) are investigated. In particular we calculate the supersymmetric particle spectrum subject to constraints of correct electroweak symmetry breaking and the requirement that the lightest supersymmetric particle provides the dark matter of the universe. We also calculate direct detection event rates of the lightest neutralino relevant for non-baryonic dark matter experiments. The modulation effect, due to Earth's annual motion is also calculated.

The effect of Wilson line moduli on CP-violation by soft supersymmetry breaking terms

The CP-violating phases in the soft supersymmetry-breaking sector in orbifold compactifications with a continuous Wilson line are investigated. In this case the modular symmetry is the Siegel modular group $Sp(4,Z)$ of genus two. In particular, we study the case that the hidden sector non-perturbative superpotential is determined by the Igusa cusp form ${\cal C}_{12}$ of modular weight 12. The effect of large non-perturbative corrections to the dilaton Kähler potential on the resulting CP-violating phases is also investigated.

CP-violating phases in the CKM matrix in orbifold compactifications

The picture of CP-violation in orbifold compactifications in which the $T$-modulus is at a complex fixed point of the modular group is studied. CP-violation in the neutral kaon system and in the neutron electric dipole moment are both discussed. The situation where the $T$-modulus takes complex values on the unit circle which are not at a fixed point is also discussed.

CP Violation By Soft Supersymmetry Breaking Terms in Orbifold Compactifications

The possibility of spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry by the expectation values of orbifold moduli is investigated with particular reference to $CP$ violating phases in soft supersymmetry breaking terms. The effect of different mechanisms for stabilizing the dilaton and the form of the non-perturbative superpotential on the existence and size of these phases is studied. Non-perturbative superpotentials involving the absolute modular invariant $j(T)$, such as may arise from F-theory compactifications, are considered.
