Josephson junction qubit network with current-controlled interaction

We design and evaluate a scalable charge qubit chain network with controllable current-current coupling of neighbouring qubit loops via local dc-current gates. The network allows construction of general N-qubit gates. The proposed design is in line with current main stream experiments.

Coherent current transport in wide ballistic Josephson junctions

We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of coherent current transport in wide ballistic superconductor-two dimensional electron gas-superconductor junctions. It is found experimentally that upon increasing the junction length, the subharmonic gap structure in the current-voltage characteristics is shifted to lower voltages, and the excess current at voltages much larger than the superconducting gap decreases. Applying a theory of coherent multiple Andreev reflection, we show that these observations can be explained in terms of transport through Andreev resonances.

Nonequilibrium Josephson effect in short-arm diffusive SNS interferometers

We study non-equilibrium Josephson effect and phase-dependent conductance in three-terminal diffusive interferometers with short arms. We consider strong proximity effect and investigate an interplay of dissipative and Josephson currents co-existing within the same proximity region. In junctions with transparent interfaces, the suppression of the Josephson current appears at rather large voltage, $eV\sim Δ$, and the current vanishes at $eV\geqΔ$. Josephson current inversion becomes possible in junctions with resistive interfaces, where the inversion occurs within a finite interval of the applied voltage. Due to the presence of considerably large and phase-dependent injection current, the critical current measured in a current biased junction does not coincide with the maximum Josephson current, and remains finite when the true Josephson current is suppressed. The voltage dependence of the conductance shows two pronounced peaks, at the bulk gap energy, and at the proximity gap energy; the phase oscillation of the conductance exhibits qualitatively different form at small voltage $eV<Δ$, and at large voltage $eV>Δ$.

Noise in the Single Electron Transistor and its back action during measurement

Single electron transistors (SETs) are very sensitive electrometers and they can be used in a range of applications. In this paper we give an introduction to the SET and present a full quantum mechanical calculation of how noise is generated in the SET over the full frequency range, including a new formula for the quantum current noise. The calculation agrees well with the shot noise result in the low frequency limit, and with the Nyquist noise in the high frequency limit. We discuss how the SET and in particular the radio-frequency SET can be used to read out charge based qubits such as the single Cooper pair box. We also discuss the backaction which the SET will have on the qubit. The back action is determined by the spectral power of voltage fluctuations on the SET island. We will mainly treat the normal state SET but many of the results are also valid for superconducting SETs.

Andreev Level Qubit

We investigate the dynamics of a two-level Andreev bound state system in a transmissive quantum point contact embedded in an rf-SQUID. Coherent coupling of the Andreev levels to the circulating supercurrent allows manipulation and read out of the level states. The two-level Hamiltonian for the Andreev levels is derived, and the effect of interaction with the quantum fluctuations of the induced flux is studied. We also consider an inductive coupling of qubits, and discuss the relevant SQUID parameters for qubit operation and read out.

Phase dependent multiple Andreev reflections in SNS interferometers

A theory of coherent multiple Andreev reflections (MAR) is developed for superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS) interferometers. We consider a Y-shape normal electron beam splitter connecting two superconducting reservoirs, where the two connection points to the same superconductor can have different phase. The current is calculated in the quantum transport regime as a function of applied voltage and phase difference, $I(V,ϕ)$. MAR in interferometers incorporates two features: interference in the arms of the splitter, and interplay with Andreev resonances. The latter feature yields enhancement of the subgap current and current peaks with phase-dependent positions and magnitudes. The interference effect leads to suppression of the subgap current and complete disappearance of the current peaks at $ϕ=π$. The excess current at large voltage decreases and changes sign with increasing phase difference.

Interplay between single-particle and two-particle tunneling in normal metal-d-wave superconductor junctions probed by shot noise

We discuss how life-time broadening of quasiparticle states influences single- and two-particle current transport through zero-energy states at normal metal/d-wave superconductor junctions. We distinguish between intrinsic broadening (imaginary part $η$ of the energy), which couples the bound states with the superconducting reservoir, and broadening due to leakage through the junction barrier, which couples the bound states with the normal metal reservoir. We show that shot noise is highly sensitive to the mechanism of broadening, while the conductance is not. In the limit of small but finite intrinsic broadening, compared to the junction transparency $D$, $η/Δ_0\ll D$, the low-voltage shot noise at zero frequency and zero temperature becomes proportional to the magnitude $η$ of intrinsic broadening ($Δ_0$ is the maximum d-wave gap).

Proximity Effect and Multiple Andreev Reflections in Chaotic Josephson junctions

We study the dc-current transport in a voltage biased superconductor-chaotic dot-superconductor junction with an induced proximity effect(PE) in the dot. It is found that for a Thouless energy $E_{Th}$ of the dot smaller than the superconducting energy gap $Δ$, the PE is manifested as peaks in the differential conductance at voltages of order $E_{Th}$ away from the even subharmonic gap structures $eV \approx 2(Δ\pm E_{Th})/2n$. These peaks are insensitive to temperatures $kT \ll Δ$ but are suppressed by a weak magnetic field. The current for suppressed PE is independent of $E_{Th}$ and magnetic field and is shown to be given by the Octavio-Tinkham-Blonder-Klapwijk theory.

Andreev bound states in high-$T_c$ superconducting junctions

The formation of bound states at surfaces of materials with an energy gap in the bulk electron spectrum is a well known physical phenomenon. At superconductor surfaces, quasiparticles with energies inside the superconducting gap $Δ$ may be trapped in bound states in quantum wells, formed by total reflection against the vacuum and total Andreev reflection against the superconductor. Since an electron reflects as a hole and sends a Cooper pair into the superconductor, the surface states give rise to resonant transport of quasiparticle and Cooper pair currents, and may be observed in tunneling spectra. In superconducting junctions, these surface states may hybridize and form bound Andreev states, trapped between the superconducting electrodes. In d-wave superconductors, the order parameter changes sign under $90^o$ rotation and, as a consequence, Andreev reflection may lead to the formation of zero energy quasiparticle bound states, midgap states (MGS). The formation of MGS is a robust feature of d-wave superconductivity and provides a unified framework for many important effects which will be reviewed: large Josephson current, low-temperature anomaly of the critical Josephson current, $π$-junction behavior, $0\to π$ junction crossover with temperature, zero-bias conductance peaks, paramagnetic currents, time reversal symmetry breaking, spontaneous interface currents, and resonance features in subgap currents. Taken together these effects, when observed in experiments, provide proof for d-wave superconductivity in the cuprates.

Coherent multiple Andreev reflections and current resonances in SNS junctions

We study coherent multiple Andreev reflections in quantum SNS junctions of finite length and arbitrary transparency. The presence of superconducting bound states in these junctions gives rise to great enhancement of the subgap current. The effect is most pronounced in low-transparency junctions, $D\ll1$, and in the interval of applied voltage $Δ/2<eV<Δ$, where the amplitude of the current structures is proportional to the first power of the junction transparency $D$. The resonant current structures consist of steps and oscillations of the two-particle current and also of multiparticle resonance peaks. The positions of the two-particle current structures have pronounced temperature dependence which scales with $Δ(T)$, while the positions of the multiparticle resonances have weak temperature dependence, being mostly determined by the junction geometry. Despite the large resonant two-particle current, the excess current at large voltage is small and proportional to $D^2$. Pacs: 74.50.+r, 74.80.Fp, 74.20.Fg, 73.23.Ad

Current noise in long diffusive SNS junctions in the incoherent MAR regime

Spectral density of current fluctuations at zero frequency is calculated for a long diffusive SNS junction with low-resistive interfaces. At low temperature, T << Delta, the subgap shot noise approaches linear voltage dependence, S=(2/ 3R)(eV + 2Delta), which is the sum of the shot noise of the normal conductor and voltage independent excess noise. This result can also be interpreted as the 1/3-suppressed Poisson noise for the effective charge q = e(1+2Delta/eV) transferred by incoherent multiple Andreev reflections (MAR). At higher temperatures, anomalies of the current noise develop at the gap subharmonics, eV = 2Delta/n. The crossover to the hot electron regime from the MAR regime is analyzed in the limit of small applied voltages.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking at Josephson tunnel junctions of purely d-wave superconductors

We study spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at Josephson tunnel junctions of d-wave superconductors in the absence of subdominant components of the order parameter. For tunnel junctions, when the orientation is close to 0/45 (for which a gap lobe points towards the junction on one side and a gap node on the other), the mechanism of the symmetry breaking is the splitting of midgap states (MGS) by spontaneous establishment of a phase difference $ϕ=\pm π/2$ across the junction. This occurs for transparencies $D\ggξ_0/λ$ and temperatures $k_BT\ll DΔ_0$, where $ξ_0$ is the coherence length, $λ$ is the penetration depth, and $Δ_0$ is the maximum energy gap. On the other hand. tunnel junctions with $D\llξ_0/λ$ effectively behave as surfaces, for which the mechanism of symmetry breaking is self-induced Doppler shifts of MGS. For this instability, we calculate the phase transition temperature $k_BT_{TRSB}=(1/6)(ξ_0/λ)Δ_0$ and show that the spatial shape of the gap is unimportant.

Circuit theory of multiple Andreev reflections in diffusive SNS junctions: the incoherent case

The incoherent regime of Multiple Andreev Reflections (MAR) is studied in long diffusive SNS junctions at applied voltages larger than the Thouless energy. Incoherent MAR is treated as a transport problem in energy space by means of a circuit theory for an equivalent electrical network. The current through NS interfaces is explained in terms of diffusion flows of electrons and holes through tunnel and Andreev resistors. These resistors in diffusive junctions play roles analogous to the normal and Andreev reflection coefficients in OTBK theory for ballistic junctions. The theory is applied to the subharmonic gap structure (SGS); simple analytical results are obtained for the distribution function and current spectral density for the limiting cases of resistive and transparent NS interfaces. In the general case, the exact solution is found in terms of chain-fractions, and the current is calculated numerically. SGS shows qualitatively different behavior for even and odd subharmonic numbers, and the maximum slopes of the differential resistance correspond to the gap subharmonics. The influence of inelastic scattering on the subgap anomalies of the differential resistance is analyzed.

Nonequilibrium Josephson current in ballistic multiterminal SNS-junctions

We study the nonequilibrium Josephson current in a long two-dimensional ballistic SNS-junction with a normal reservoir coupled to the normal part of the junction. The current for a given superconducting phase difference $ϕ$ oscillates as a function of voltage applied between the normal reservoir and the SNS-junction. The period of the oscillations is $π\hbar v_F/L$, with $L$ the length of the junction, and the amplitude of the oscillations decays as $V^{-3/2}$ for $eV \gg \hbar v_{F}/L$ and zero temperature. The critical current $I_c$ shows a similar oscillating, decaying behavior as a function of voltage, changing sign every oscillation. Normal specular or diffusive scattering at the NS-interfaces does not qualitatively change the picture.

Current-Voltage Relations in d-wave Josephson Junctions: Effects of Midgap Interface States

We investigate the dc current-voltage characteristics of d-wave Josephson junctions, where the barrier at the interface may have arbitrary strength. Dividing the current into n-particle currents $I_n$ (n integer), we can explicitly show which physical processes are responsible for the subharmonic gap structure (SGS). For orientations where midgap states (MGS) exist, the resonances in the n-particle processes are drastically changed, giving rise to a strongly modified SGS. Introducing broadening in a phenomenological way, we show that MGS may produce a current peak near zero bias and we explain which physical processes are contributing to this peak. The agreement of our theory with recent experiments is discussed.

Multiple Andreev reflection in single atom niobium junctions

Single atom junctions between superconducting niobium leads are produced using the Mechanically Controllable Break Junction technique. The current-voltage characteristics of these junctions are analysed using an exact formulation for a superconducting quantum point contact. For tunnelling between two single atoms with a sufficiently large vacuum barrier, it is found that a single channel dominates the current, and that the current-voltage characteristic is described by the theory, without adjustable parameters. For a contact of a single Nb atom it is shown that five conductance channels contribute to the conductance, in agreement with the number expected based on the number of valence orbitals for this d-metal. For each of the channels the transmission probability is obtained from the fits and the limits of accuracy for these numbers are discussed.

Multiple Andreev reflections and enhanced shot noise in diffusive SNS junctions

We study the dc conductance and current fluctuations in diffusive voltage biased SNS junctions with a tunnel barrier inside the mesoscopic normal region. We find that at subgap voltages, eV<2Delta/n, the current associated with the chain of n Andreev reflections is mapped onto the quasiparticle flow through a structure of n+1 voltage biased barriers connected by diffusive conductors. As a result, the current-voltage characteristic of a long SNINS structure obeys Ohm's law, in spite of the complex multiparticle transport process. At the same time, nonequilibrium heating of subgap electrons produces giant shot noise with pronounced subharmonic gap structure which corresponds to stepwise growth of the effective transferred charge. At eV\to 0, the shot noise approaches the magnitude of the Johnson-Nyquist noise with the effective temperature T^*=Delta/3, and the effective charge increases as (e/3)(1 + 2Delta/eV), with the universal ``one third suppression'' factor. We analyse the role of inelastic scattering and present a criterion of strong nonequilibrium.

Nonequilibrium Josephson effect in mesoscopic ballistic multiterminal SNS junctions

We present a detailed study of nonequilibrium Josephson currents and conductance in ballistic multiterminal SNS-devices. Nonequilibrium is created by means of quasiparticle injection from a normal reservoir connected to the normal part of the junction. By applying a voltage at the normal reservoir the Josephson current can be suppressed or the direction of the current can be reversed. For a junction longer than the thermal length, $L\ggξ_T$, the nonequilibrium current increases linearly with applied voltage, saturating at a value equal to the equilibrium current of a short junction. The conductance exhibits a finite bias anomaly around $eV \sim \hbar v_F/L$. For symmetric injection, the conductance oscillates $2π$-periodically with the phase difference $ϕ$ between the superconductors, with position of the minimum ($ϕ=0$ or $π$) dependent on applied voltage and temperature. For asymmetric injection, both the nonequilibrium Josephson current and the conductance becomes $π$-periodic in phase difference. Inclusion of barriers at the NS-interfaces gives rise to a resonant behavior of the total Josephson current with respect to junction length with a period $\sim λ_F$. Both three and four terminal junctions are studied.
