On the history of nested intervals: from Archimedes to Cantor

The idea of the principle of nested intervals or the concept of convergent sequences which is equivalent to this idea dates back to the ancient world. Archimedes calculated the unknown in excess and deficiency, approximating with two sets of values: ambient and nested values. Buridan came up with a concept of a point lying within a sequence of nested intervals. Fermat, Gregory, Newton, MacLaurin, Gauss, and Fourier used to search for an unknown value with the help of approximation in excess and deficiency. In the 19-th century, in works of Bolzano, Cauchy, Lejeune Dirichlet, Weierstrass, and Cantor, this logical construction turned into the analysis argumentation method. The concept of a real number was elaborated in the 1870-s in works of Meray, Weierstrass, Heine, Cantor, and Dedekind. Cantor elaboration was based on the notion of a limiting point and principle of nested intervals. What we are going to consider now, is the genesis of this idea which dates back to the ancient world.

On the History of Number Line

The notion of number line was formed in XX c. We consider the generation of this conception in works by M. Stiefel (1544), Galilei (1633), Euler (1748), Lambert (1766), Bolzano (1830-1834), Meray (1869-1872), Cantor (1872), Dedekind (1872), Heine (1872) and Weierstrass (1861-1885).

The Fate of Russian Translations of Cantor

This is the history of translating Cantor's works into Russian from 1892 to 1985 in Odessa, Moscow, Tomsk, Kazan, S.-Petersburg, Leningrad. Mathematicians and philosophers in Russia took the ideas of the theory of sets enthusiastically. Such renowned scholars and scientists as Timchenko, Shatunovsky, Vasiliev, Florensky, Mlodzeevsky, Nekrasov, Zhegalkin, Yushkevich Sr., Fet, Yushkevich Jr., Kolmogorov, and Medvedev took part in their popularisation. In 1970 Academician Pontryagin rated the theory of sets as useless for young mathematicians, and the translated works of Cantor were not published. This article first describes the tragic fate of this translation.
