How to use the functional empirical process for deriving asymptotic laws for functions of the sample

The functional empirical process is a very powerful tool for deriving asymptotic laws for almost any kind of statistics whenever we know how to express them into functions of the sample. Since this method seems to be applied more and more in the very recent future, this paper is intended to provide a complete but short description and justification of the method and to illustrate it with a non-trivial example using bivariate data. It may also serve for citation without repeating the arguments.

Asymptotics of summands I: square integrable independent random variables

This paper is part of series on self-contained papers in which a large part, if not the full extent, of the asymptotic limit theory of summands of independent random variables is exposed. Each paper of the series may be taken as review exposition but specially as a complete exposition expect a few exterior resources. For graduate students and for researchers (beginners or advanced), any paper of the series should be considered as a basis for constructing new results. The contents are taken from advanced books but the organization and the proofs use more recent tools, are given in more details and do not systematically follow previous one. Sometimes, theorems are completed and innovated

A note on the weak convergence of continuously integrable sequences

A uniformly continuously integrable sequence of real-valued measurable functions, defined on some probability space, is relatively compact in the $σ(L^1,L^\infty)$ topology. In this paper, we link such a result to weak convergence theory of bounded measures as exposed in Billingsley (1968) and in Lo(2021) to offer a detailed and new proof using the ideas beneath the proof of prohorov's theorem where the continuous integrability replaces the uniform or asymptotic tightness.

Measure Theory and Integration By and For the Learner

Measure Theory and Integration is exposed with the clear aim to help beginning learners to perfectly master its essence. In opposition of a delivery of the contents in an academic and vertical course, the knowledge is broken into exercises which are left to the learners for solutions. Hints are present at any corner to help readers to achieve the solutions. In that way, the knowledge is constructed by the readers by summarizing the results of one or a group of exercises. Each chapter is organized into Summary documents which contain the knowledge, Discovery documents which give the learner the opportunity to extract the knowledge himself through exercises and into Solution Documents which offer detailed answers for the exercises. Exceptionally, a few number of results (A key lemma related the justification of definition of the integral of a non-negative function, the Caratheodory's theorem and the Lebesgue-Stieljes measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$) are presented in appendix documents and given for reading in small groups. The full theory is presented in the described way. We highly expect that any student who goes through the materials, alone or in a small group or under the supervision of an assistant will gain a very solid knowledge in the subject and by the way ensure a sound foundation for studying disciplines such as Probability Theory, Statistics, Functional Analysis, etc. The materials have been successfully used as such in normal real analysis classes several times.

Overview description of the Gambian GABECE Educational Data and associated algorithms and unsupervized learning process

As the first paper of a series of exploratory analysis and statistical investigation works on the Gambian \textit{GABECE} data based on a variety of statistical tools, we wish to begin with a thorough unsupervised learning process through descriptive and exploratory methods. This will lead to a variety of discoveries and hypotheses that will direct future research works related to this data.

A Supervised Hybrid Statistical Catch-up System Built on Gabece Gambian Data

In this paper we want to find a statistical rule that assigns a passing or failing grade to students who undertook at least three exams out of four in a national exam, instead of completely dismissing them students. While it is cruel to declare them as failing, especially if the reason for their absence it not intentional, they should have demonstrated enough merit in the three exams taken to deserve a chance to be declared passing. We use a special classification method and nearest neighbors methods based on the average grade and on the most modal grade to build a statistical rule in a supervised learning process. The study is built on the national GABECE educational data which is a considerable data covering seven years and all the six regions of the Gambia.

Arbitrary functional Glivenko-Cantelli classes and applications to different types of dependence

Using a general strong law of large number proved by Sangaré and Lo (2015) and the entropy numbers, we provide functional Glivenko-Cantelli (GC) classes for arbitrary stationary real-valued random variables (rrv's). Next, the general results are particularized for different types of dependence (association, $ϕ$-mixing, in particular) and compared with available results in the literature.

A modern approach to the moment problem on $\mathbb{R}$

The moment problem is an important problem in Functional Analysis and in Probability measure. It goes back to Stieltjes, around 1890. There is still an important ongoing interest in the recent literature. But, up today, the main theoretical resource (Shohat and Tamarkin, 1934) does not have the modern exposure it deserves, especially in the current development of measure theory of integration. Besides, the multivariate version is far less exploited. In this paper, a full exposure of such a theory is presented, using the latest knowledge of measure theory and functional analysis. As a result, the basis of future development is layed out and the accessibility of the theory by modern graduate students andresearches is guaranteed.

A detailed and direct proof of Skorohod-Wichura's theorem

The representation Skorohod theorem of weak convergence of random variables on a metric space goes back to Skorohod (1956) in the case where the metric space is the class of real-valued functions defined on [0,1] which are right-continuous and have left-hand limits when endowed with the Skorohod metric. Among the extensions of that to metric spaces, the version by Wichura (1970) seems to be the most fundamental. But the proof of Wichura seems to be destined to a very restricted public. We propose a more detailed proof to make it more accessible at the graduate level. However we do far more by simplifying it since important steps in the original proof are dropped, which leads to a direct proof that we hope to be more understandable to a larger spectrum of readers. The current version is more appropriate for different kinds of generalizations.

Comparison between Riemann-Stieltjes and Lebesgue-Stieltjes integration using discrete distribution functions

Integrating with respect to functions which are constant on intervals whose bounds are discontinuity points (of those functions) is frequent in many branches of Mathematics, specially in stochastic processes. For such functions and alike extension, a comparison between Riemann-Stieltjes and Lebesgue-Stieltjes integration and the integrals formulas leads to interesting facts for students (as complements of Measure Theory and Integrations) and for practitioners and and researchers. We undergone conditions of existence the Riemann-Stieltjes integrals related to that type of function and compare the results with what should be expected for Lebesgue-Stieltjes theory.

A parallel treatment of semi-continuous functions with left and right-functions continuous and some application in pedagogy

Left and right-continuous functions play an important role in Real analysis, especially in Measure Theory and Integration on the real line and in Stochastic processes indexed by a continuous real time. Semi-continuous functions are also of major interest in the same way. This paper aims at presenting a useful handling of semi-continuous function in parallel with the way left or right continuous functions are treated. For example, a lower or upper continuous function shares the property that it is measurable if it fails to be upper or lower continuous at most at a number of countable points with a left or right-continuous when it fails to be left or right-continuous at most at a number of countable points. As a final result, the comparison between the Riemann and the Lebesgue integrals on compact sets is done in a very comfortable and comprehensive way. The frame used here is open to more further sophistication

Non parametric estimation of joint, Renyi-Stallis entropies and mutual information and asymptotic limits

This paper proposes a new method for estimating the joint probability mass function of a pair of discrete random variables. This estimator is used to construct joint Shannon Rényi-Tsallis entropies, and the mutual information estimates of a pair of discrete random variables. Almost sure consistency and central limit Theorems are established. Our theorical results are validated by simulations.

Extremes, extremal index estimation, records, moment problem for the Pseudo-Lindley distribution and applications

The pseudo-Lindley distribution which was introduced in Zeghdoudi and Nedjar (2016) is studied with regards to its upper tail. In that regard, and when the underlying distribution function follows the Pseudo-Lindley law, we investigate the behavior of its values, the asymptotic normality of the Hill estimator and the double-indexed generalized Hill statistic process (Ngom and Lo), the asymptotic normality of the records values and the moment problem.

Statistical tests for the Pseudo-Lindley distribution and applications

The pseudo-Lindley distribution was introduced as a useful generalization of the Lindley distribution in Zeghdoudi and Nedjar (2016) who showed interesting properties of their new laws and efficiencies in modeling data in Reliability and Survival Analysis. In this paper we study the estimators of the pair of parameters and determine their asymptotic law from which a chi-square law is derived. From both asymptotic laws, statistical tests are built. Simulation studies on the tests conclude to their efficiency for data sizes generally used in Reliability. R codes related to statistical analysis on that law are given in an appropriate archive repository code paper in Arxiv.

Finiteness of Record values and Alternative Asymptotic Theory of Records with Atom Endpoints

Asymptotic theories on record values and times, including central limit theorems, make sense only if the sequence of records values (and of record times) is infinite. If not, such theories could not even be an option. In this paper, we give necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the finiteness of the number of records. We prove, for example for \textsl{iid} real valued random variable, that strong upper record values are finite if and only if the upper endpoint is finite and is an atom of the common cumulative distribution function. The only asymptotic study left to us concerns the infinite sequence of hitting times of that upper endpoints, which by the way, is the sequence of weak record times. The asymptotic characterizations are made using negative binomial random variables and the dimensional multinomial random variables. Asymptotic comparison in terms of consistency bounds and confidence intervals on the different sequences of hitting times are provide. The example of a binomial random variable is given

Asymptotic laws for upper and strong record values in the extreme domain of attraction and beyond

Asymptotic laws of records values have usually been investigated as limits in type. In this paper, we use functional representations of the tail of cumulative distribution functions in the extreme value domain of attraction to directly establish asymptotic laws of records value, not necessarily as limits in type. Results beyond the extreme value value domain are provided. Explicit asymptotic laws concerning very usual laws are listed as well. Some of these laws are expected to be used in fitting distribution

Flexible versions of the Stone-Weierstrass Theorem in General and Applications to Probability Theory

When applying the classical Stone-Weierstrass common version in Probability Theory for example, and in other fields as well, problems may arise if all points of the compact set are not separated. A solution may consist in going back to the proof and finding alternative versions. In this note, we did it and come back with two flexible versions which are easily used for the needs of classical Probability Theory.
