Phase evolution of Peregrine-like breathers in optics and hydrodynamics

We present a detailed study of the phase properties of rational breather waves observed in the hydrodynamic and optical domains, namely the Peregrine soliton and related second-order solution. At the point of maximum compression, our experimental results recorded in a wave tank or using an optical fiber platform reveal a characteristic phase shift that is multiple of $π$ between the central part of the pulse and the continuous background, in agreement with analytical and numerical predictions. We also stress the existence of a large longitudinal phase shift across the point of maximum compression.

Shape-from-Mask: A Deep Learning Based Human Body Shape Reconstruction from Binary Mask Images

3D content creation is referred to as one of the most fundamental tasks of computer graphics. And many 3D modeling algorithms from 2D images or curves have been developed over the past several decades. Designers are allowed to align some conceptual images or sketch some suggestive curves, from front, side, and top views, and then use them as references in constructing a 3D model automatically or manually. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated on 3D human body reconstruction in a similar manner. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based reconstruction of 3D human body shape from 2D orthographic views. A novel CNN-based regression network, with two branches corresponding to frontal and lateral views respectively, is designed for estimating 3D human body shape from 2D mask images. We train our networks separately to decouple the feature descriptors which encode the body parameters from different views, and fuse them to estimate an accurate human body shape. In addition, to overcome the shortage of training data required for this purpose, we propose some significantly data augmentation schemes for 3D human body shapes, which can be used to promote further research on this topic. Extensive experimen- tal results demonstrate that visually realistic and accurate reconstructions can be achieved effectively using our algorithm. Requiring only binary mask images, our method can help users create their own digital avatars quickly, and also make it easy to create digital human body for 3D game, virtual reality, online fashion shopping.

Gated Tuned Superconductivity and Phonon Softening in Mono- and Bilayer MoS$_2$

Superconductors at the atomic two-dimensional (2D) limit are the focus of an enduring fascination in the condensed matter community. This is because, with reduced dimensions, the effects of disorders, fluctuations, and correlations in superconductors become particularly prominent at the atomic 2D limit; thus such superconductors provide opportunities to tackle tough theoretical and experimental challenges. Here, based on the observation of ultrathin 2D superconductivity in mono- and bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) with electric-double-layer (EDL) gating, we found that the critical sheet carrier density required to achieve superconductivity in a monolayer MoS$_2$ flake can be as low as 0.55*10$^{14}$cm$^{-2}$, which is much lower than those values in the bilayer and thicker cases in previous report and also our own observations. Further comparison of the phonon dispersion obtained by ab initio calculations indicated that the phonon softening of the acoustic modes around the M point plays a key role in the gate-induced superconductivity within the Bardeen-Cooper Schrieffer (BCS) theory framework. This result might help enrich the understanding of 2D superconductivity with EDL gating.

Valley polarization generated in 3-dimensional group-IV monochalcogenids

Valleytronics is one of the breaking-through to the technology of electronics, which provides a new degree of freedom to manipulate the properties of electrons. Combining DFT calculations, optical absorption analysis and the linear polarization-resolved transmission measurement together, we report that three pairs of valleys, which feature opposite optical absorption, existing in the 3-dimensional (3D) group-IV monochalcogenids. By applying the linearly-polarized light, valley polarization is successfully generated for the first time in a 3D system, which opens a new direction for the exploration of the valley materials and provides a good platform for the photodetector and valleytronic devices. Valley modulation versus the in-plane strain in GeSe is also studied, suggesting an effective way to get the optimized valleytronic properties.

Weakening the tight coupling between geometry and simulation in isogeometric analysis: from sub- and super- geometric analysis to Geometry Independent Field approximaTion (GIFT)

This paper presents an approach to generalize the concept of isogeometric analysis (IGA) by allowing different spaces for parameterization of the computational domain and for approximation of the solution field. The method inherits the main advantage of isogeometric analysis, i.e. preserves the original, exact CAD geometry (for example, given by NURBS), but allows pairing it with an approximation space which is more suitable/flexible for analysis, for example, T-splines, LR-splines, (truncated) hierarchical B-splines, and PHT-splines. This generalization offers the advantage of adaptive local refinement without the need to re-parameterize the domain, and therefore without weakening the link with the CAD model. We demonstrate the use of the method with different choices of the geometry and field splines, and show that, despite the failure of the standard patch test, the optimum convergence rate is achieved for non-nested spaces.

Constructing IGA-suitable planar parameterization from complex CAD boundary by domain partition and global/local optimization

In this paper, we propose a general framework for constructing IGA-suitable planar B-spline parameterizations from given complex CAD boundaries consisting of a set of B-spline curves. Instead of forming the computational domain by a simple boundary, planar domains with high genus and more complex boundary curves are considered. Firstly, some pre-processing operations including Bézier extraction and subdivision are performed on each boundary curve in order to generate a high-quality planar parameterization; then a robust planar domain partition framework is proposed to construct high-quality patch-meshing results with few singularities from the discrete boundary formed by connecting the end points of the resulting boundary segments. After the topology information generation of quadrilateral decomposition, the optimal placement of interior Bézier curves corresponding to the interior edges of the quadrangulation is constructed by a global optimization method to achieve a patch-partition with high quality. Finally, after the imposition of C1=G1-continuity constraints on the interface of neighboring Bézier patches with respect to each quad in the quadrangulation, the high-quality Bézier patch parameterization is obtained by a C1-constrained local optimization method to achieve uniform and orthogonal iso-parametric structures while keeping the continuity conditions between patches. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed method are demonstrated by several examples which are compared to results obtained by the skeleton-based parameterization approach.

An improved isogeometric analysis method for trimmed geometries

Trimming techniques are efficient ways to generate complex geometries in Computer-Aided Design(CAD). In this paper, an improved isogeometric analysis(IGA) method for trimmed geometries is proposed. We will show that the proposed method reduces the numerical error of physical solution by 50% for simple trimmed geometries, and the condition number of stiffness matrix is also decreased. Furthermore, the number of integration elements and integration points involved in the solving process can be significantly reduced compared to previous approaches, drastically improving the computational efficiency for IGA problems on the trimmed geometry. Several examples are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

On the origins of spectral broadening of incoherent waves:Catastrophic process of coherence degradation

We revisit the mechanisms underlying the process of spectral broadening of incoherent optical waves propagating in nonlinear media on the basis of nonequilibrium thermodynamic considerations. A simple analysis reveals that a prerequisite for the existence of a significant spectral broadening of the waves is that the linear part of the energy (Hamiltonian) has different contributions of opposite signs. It turns out that, at variance with the expected soliton turbulence scenario, an increase of the amount of disorder (incoherence) in the system does not require the generation of a coherent soliton structure. We illustrate the idea by considering the propagation of two wave components in an optical fiber with opposite dispersion coefficients. A wave turbulence approach of the problem reveals that the increase of kinetic energy in one component is offset by the negative reduction in the other component, so that the waves exhibit, as a general rule, a virtually unlimited spectral broadening. More precisely, a self-similar solution of the kinetic equations reveals that the spectra of the incoherent waves tend to relax toward a homogeneous distribution in the wake of a front that propagates in frequency space with a decelerating velocity. We discuss this catastrophic process of spectral broadening in the light of different important phenomena, in particular supercontinuum generation, soliton turbulence, wave condensation, and the runaway motion of mechanical systems composed of positive and negative masses.

The global existence and large time behavior of smooth compressible fluid in an infinitely expanding ball, I: 3D Euler equations

We concern with the global existence and large time behavior of compressible fluids (including the inviscid gases, viscid gases, and Boltzmann gases) in an infinitely expanding ball. Such a problem is one of the interesting models in studying the theory of global smooth solutions to multidimensional compressible gases with time dependent boundaries and vacuum states at infinite time. Due to the conservation of mass, the fluid in the expanding ball becomes rarefied and eventually tends to a vacuum state meanwhile there are no appearances of vacuum domains in any part of the expansive ball, which is easily observed in finite time. In this paper, as the first part of our three papers, we will confirm this physical phenomenon for the compressible inviscid fluids by obtaining the exact lower and upper bound on the density function.

Topological semimetal in honeycomb lattice LnSI

Recognized as elementary particles in the standard model,Weyl fermions in condensed matter have received growing attention. However, most of the previously reportedWeyl semimetals exhibit rather complicated electronic structures that, in turn, may have raised questions regarding the underlying physics. Here, we report for the first time promising topological phases that can be realized in specific honeycomb lattices, including ideal Weyl semimetal structures, 3D strong topological insulators, and nodal-line semimetal configurations. In particular, we highlight a novel semimetal featuring both Weyl nodes and nodal lines. Guided by this model, we demonstrated that GdSI the long perceived ideal Weyl semimetal has two pairs ofWeyl nodes residing at the Fermi level, and that LuSI (YSI) is a 3D strong topological insulator with the right-handed helical surface states. Our work provides a new mechanism to study topological semimetals, and proposes a platform towards exploring the physics of Weyl semimetals as well as related device designs.

Dispersive dam-break flow of a photon fluid

We investigate the temporal photonic analogue of the dam-break phenomenon for shallow water by exploiting a fiber optics setup. We clearly observe the decay of the step-like input (photonic dam) into a pair of oppositely propagating rarefaction wave and dispersive shock wave. Our results show evidence for a critical transition of the dispersive shock into a self-cavitating state. The detailed observation of the cavitating state dynamics allows for a fully quantitative test of the Whitham modulation theory applied to the universal defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation.

Highly Efficient Ion Rejection by Graphene Oxide Membranes via Ion-controlling Interlayer Spacing

Because they may provide ultrathin, high-flux, and energy-efficient membranes for precise ionic and molecular sieving in aqueous solution, GO membranes (partially oxidized, stacked sheets of graphene) have shown great potential in water desalination and purification, gas and ion separation, biosensors, proton conductors, lithium-based batteries and super-capacitors. Unlike carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes, in which the nanotube pores have fixed sizes, the pores of GO membranes - the interlayer spacing between GO sheets - are of variable size. This presents a challenge for using GO membranes for filtration. Despite the great efforts to tune and fix the interlayer spacing, it remains difficult both to reduce the interlayer spacing sufficiently to exclude small ions while keeping this separation constant against the tendency of GO membranes to swell when immersed in aqueous solution, which greatly affects the applications of GO membranes. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that highly efficient and selective ion rejection by GO membranes can be readily achieved by controlling the interlayer spacing of GO membranes using cations (K+, Na+, Ca2+, Li+ and Mg2+) themselves. The interspacing can be controlled with precision as small as 1 A, and GO membranes controlled by one kind of cation can exclude other cations with a larger hydrated volume, which can only be accommodated with a larger interlayer spacing. First-principles calculations reveal that the strong noncovalent cation-pi interactions between hydrated cations in solution and aromatic ring structures in GO are the cause of this unexpected behavior. These findings open up new avenues for using GO membranes for water desalination and purification, lithium-based batteries and super-capacitors, molecular sieves for separating ions or molecules, and many other applications.

Isogeometric computation reuse method for complex objects with topology-consistent volumetric parameterization

Volumetric spline parameterization and computational efficiency are two main challenges in isogeometric analysis (IGA). To tackle this problem, we propose a framework of computation reuse in IGA on a set of three-dimensional models with similar semantic features. Given a template domain, B-spline based consistent volumetric parameterization is first constructed for a set of models with similar semantic features. An efficient quadrature-free method is investigated in our framework to compute the entries of stiffness matrix by Bezier extraction and polynomial approximation. In our approach, evaluation on the stiffness matrix and imposition of the boundary conditions can be pre-computed and reused during IGA on a set of CAD models. Examples with complex geometry are presented to show the effectiveness of our methods, and efficiency similar to the computation in linear finite element analysis can be achieved for IGA taken on a set of models.

Topological superconductivity on the surface of Fe-based superconductors

As one of the simplest systems for realizing Majorana fermions, topological superconductor plays an important role in both condensed matter physics and quantum computations. Based on \emph{ab~initio} calculations and the analysis of an effective 8-band model with the superconducting pairing, we demonstrate that the three dimensional extended $s$-wave Fe-based superconductors such as Fe$_{1+\text{y}}$Se$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ have a metallic topologically nontrivial band structure, and exhibit a normal-topological-normal superconductivity phase transition on the ($001$) surface by tuning the bulk carrier doping level. In the topological superconductivity (TSC) phase, a Majorana zero mode is trapped at the end of a magnetic vortex line. We further show that, the surface TSC phase only exists up to a certain bulk pairing gap, and there is a normal-topological phase transition driven by the temperature, which has not been discussed before. These results pave an effective way to realize the TSC and Majorana fermions in a large class of superconductors.

Dirac Fermions in Antiferromagnetic Semimetal

The analogues of elementary particles have been extensively searched for in condensed matter systems because of both scientific interests and technological applications. Recently massless Dirac fermions were found to emerge as low energy excitations in the materials named Dirac semimetals. All the currently known Dirac semimetals are nonmagnetic with both time-reversal symmetry $\mathcal{T}$ and inversion symmetry $\mathcal{P}$. Here we show that Dirac fermions can exist in one type of antiferromagnetic systems, where $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{P}$ are broken but their combination $\mathcal{PT}$ is respected. We propose orthorhombic antiferromagnet CuMnAs as a candidate, analyze the robustness of the Dirac points with symmetry protections, and demonstrate its distinctive bulk dispersions as well as the corresponding surface states by \emph{ab initio} calculations. Our results give a new route towards the realization of Dirac materials, and provide a possible platform to study the interplay of Dirac fermion physics and magnetism.

Intrinsic Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in the Kagome Lattice Cs2LiMn3F12

In a kagome lattice, the time reversal symmetry can be broken by a staggered magnetic flux emerging from ferromagnetic ordering and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, leading to several wellseparated nontrivial Chern bands and intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on this idea and ab initio calculations, we propose the realization of the intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single layer Cs2Mn3F12 kagome lattice and on the (001) surface of a Cs2LiMn3F12 single crystal by modifying the carrier coverage on it, where the band gap is around 20 meV. Moreover, a simplified tight binding model based on the in-plane ddσantibonding states is constructed to understand the topological band structures of the system.

Band gap anomaly and topological properties in lead chalcogenides

Band gap anomaly is a well-known issue in lead chalcogenides PbX (X=S, Se, Te, Po). Combining ab initio calculations and tight-binding (TB) method, we have studied the band evolution in PbX, and found that the band gap anomaly in PbTe is mainly related to the high onsite energy of Te 5s orbital and the large s-p hopping originated from the irregular extended distribution of Te 5s electrons. Furthermore, our calculations show that PbPo is an indirect band gap (6.5 meV) semiconductor with band inversion at L point, which clearly indicates that PbPo is a topological crystalline insulator (TCI). The calculated mirror Chern number and surface states double confirm this conclusion.

Topological nature of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ superconductor

We demonstrate, using first-principles calculations, that the electronic structure of FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ ($x$=0.5) is topologically non-trivial, characterized by an odd $\mathbb Z_2$ invariant and Dirac cone type surface states, in sharp contrast to the end member FeSe ($x$=0). This topological state is induced by the enhanced three-dimensionality and spin-orbit coupling due to Te substitution (compared to FeSe), characterized by a band inversion at the $Z$ point of the Brillouin zone, which is confirmed by our ARPES measurements. The results suggest that the surface of FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ may support a non-trivial superconducting channel in proximity to the bulk.
