ESRF-type lattice design and optimization for the High Energy Photon Source

A new generation of storage ring-based light source, called diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR), with emittance approaching the diffraction limit for multi-keV photons by means of multi-bend achromat lattice, has attracted worldwide and extensive studies. Among various DLSR proposals, the hybrid multi-bend achromat concept developed at ESRF predicts an effective way of minimizing the emittance and meanwhile keeping the required sextupole strengths to an achievable level. For the High Energy Photon Source planned to be built in Beijing, an ESRF-type lattice design consisting of 48 hybrid seven-bend achromats is proposed to reach emittance as low as 60 pm.rad with a circumference of about 1296 m. Sufficient dynamic aperture promising vertical on-axis injection and moderate momentum acceptance are achieved simultaneously for a promising ring performance.

Broadband Linear-Dichroic Photodetector in a Black Phosphorus Vertical p-n Junction

The ability to detect light over a broad spectral range is central for practical optoelectronic applications, and has been successfully demonstrated with photodetectors of two-dimensional layered crystals such as graphene and MoS2. However, polarization sensitivity within such a photodetector remains elusive. Here we demonstrate a linear-dichroic broadband photodetector with layered black phosphorus transistors, using the strong intrinsic linear dichroism arising from the in-plane optical anisotropy with respect to the atom-buckled direction, which is polarization sensitive over a broad bandwidth from 400 nm to 3750 nm. Especially, a perpendicular build-in electric field induced by gating in black phosphorus transistors can spatially separate the photo-generated electrons and holes in the channel, effectively reducing their recombination rate, and thus enhancing the efficiency and performance for linear dichroism photodetection. This provides new functionality using anisotropic layered black phosphorus, thereby enabling novel optical and optoelectronic device applications.

Decomposition of Three-Dimensional Steady Non-isentropic Compressible Euler System and Stability of Spherically Symmetric Subsonic Flows and Transonic Shocks under Multidimensional Perturbations

We develop a method that works in general product Riemannian manifold to decompose the three-dimensional steady full compressible Euler system, which is of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type for subsonic flows. The method is applied to show stability of spherically symmetric subsonic flows and transonic shocks in space $\mathbb{R}^3$ under multidimensional perturbations of boundary conditions.

Pressure induced metallization with absence of structural transition in layered MoSe2

Layered transition-metal dichalcogenides have emerged as exciting material systems with atomically thin geometries and unique electronic properties. Pressure is a powerful tool for continuously tuning their crystal and electronic structures away from the pristine states. Here, we systematically investigated the pressurized behavior of MoSe2 up to ~ 60 GPa using multiple experimental techniques and ab -initio calculations. MoSe2 evolves from an anisotropic two-dimensional layered network to a three-dimensional structure without a structural transition, which is a complete contrast to MoS2. The role of the chalcogenide anions in stabilizing different layered patterns is underscored by our layer sliding calculations. MoSe2 possesses highly tunable transport properties under pressure, determined by the gradual narrowing of its band-gap followed by metallization. The continuous tuning of its electronic structure and band-gap in the range of visible light to infrared suggest possible energy-variable optoelectronics applications in pressurized transition-metal dichalcogenides.

Suppression of the emittance growth induced by coherent synchrotron radiation in triple-bend achromats

The coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) effect in a bending path plays an important role in transverse emittance dilution in high-brightness light sources and linear colliders, where the electron beams are of short bunch length and high peak current. Suppression of the emittance growth induced by CSR is critical to preserve the beam quality and help improve the machine performance. It has been shown that the CSR effect in a double-bend achromat (DBA) can be analyzed with the two-dimensional point-kick analysis method. In this paper, this method is applied to analyze the CSR effect in a triple-bend achromat (TBA) with symmetric layout, which is commonly used in the optics designs of energy recovery linacs (ERLs). A condition of cancelling the CSR linear effect in such a TBA is obtained, and is verified through numerical simulations. It is demonstrated that emittance preservation can be achieved with this condition, and to a large extent, has a high tolerance to the fluctuation of the initial transverse phase space distribution of the beam.

PEPX-type lattice design and optimization for the High Energy Photon Source

A new generation of storage ring-based light source, called diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR), with the emittance approaching the diffraction limit for multi-keV photons by using the multi-bend achromat lattice, has attracted worldwide and extensive studies of several laboratories, and been seriously considered as a goal of upgrading the existing facilities in the imminent future. Among various DLSR proposals, the PEPX design based on the third-order achromat concept and with the special design of a high-beta injection straight section demonstrated that, it is feasible to achieve sufficient ring acceptance for off-axis injection in a DLSR. For the High Energy Photon Source planned to be built in Beijing, PEPX-type lattice has been designed and continuously improved. In this paper, we report the evolution of the PEPX-type design, and discuss the main issues relevant to the linear optics design and nonlinear optimization.

Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Magnetic Insulator Heterostructure

Based on ab initio calculations, we predict that a monolayer of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3 and GdI2 heterostructure is a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with a non-trivial band gap up to 38 meV. The principle behind our prediction is that the band inversion between two topologically trivial ferromagnetic insulators can result in a non-zero Chern number, which offers a better way to realize the quantum anomalous Hall state without random magnetic doping. In addition, a simple effective model is presented to describe the basic mechanism of spin polarized band inversion in this system. Moreover, we predict that 3D quantum anomalous Hall insulator could be realized in (Bi2/3Cr1/3)2Te3/GdI2 superlattice.

Topological States in Ferromagnetic CdO/EuO Superlattices and Quantum Wells

Based on ab initio calculations, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetic CdO/EuO superlattice is a simple Weyl semimetal with two linear Weyl nodes in the Brillouin zone, and the corresponding CdO/EuO quantum well realizes the stichometric quantum anomalous Hall state without random magnetic doping. In addition, a simple effective model is presented to describe the basic mechanism of spin polarized band inversion in this system.

Generation and Electric Control of Spin-Coupled Valley Current in WSe2

The valley degree of freedom in layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (MX2) provides the opportunity to extend functionalities of novel spintronics and valleytronics devices. Due to spin splitting induced by spin-orbital coupling (SOC), the non-equilibrium charge carrier imbalance between two degenerate and inequivalent valleys to realize valley/spin polarization has been successfully demonstrated theoretically and supported by optical experiments. However, the generation of a valley/spin current by the valley polarization in MX2 remains elusive and a great challenge. Here, within an electric-double-layer transistor based on WSe2, we demonstrated a spin-coupled valley photocurrent whose direction and magnitude depend on the degree of circular polarization of the incident radiation and can be further greatly modulated with an external electric field. Such room temperature generation and electric control of valley/spin photocurrent provides a new property of electrons in MX2 systems, thereby enabling new degrees of control for quantum-confined spintronics devices.

Topological superconductivity at the edge of transition metal dichalcogenides

Time-reversal breaking topological superconductors are new states of matter which can support Majorana zero modes at the edge. In this paper, we propose a new realization of one-dimensional topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes. The proposed system consists of a monolayer of transition metal dichalcogenides MX2 (M=Mo, W; X=S, Se) on top of a superconducting substrate. Based on first-principles calculations, we show that a zigzag edge of the monolayer MX2 terminated by metal atom M has edge states with strong spin-orbit coupling and spontaneous magnetization. By proximity coupling with a superconducting substrate, topological superconductivity can be induced at such an edge. We propose NbS2 as a natural choice of substrate, and estimate the proximity induced superconducting gap based on first-principles calculation and low energy effective model. As an experimental consequence of our theory, we predict that Majorana zero modes can be detected at the 120 degree corner of a MX2 flake in proximity with a superconducting substrate.

Large-gap quantum spin Hall insulators in tin films

The search of large-gap quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators and effective approaches to tune QSH states is important for both fundamental and practical interests. Based on first-principles calculations we find two-dimensional tin films are QSH insulators with sizable bulk gaps of 0.3 eV, sufficiently large for practical applications at room temperature. These QSH states can be effectively tuned by chemical functionalization and by external strain. The mechanism for the QSH effect in this system is band inversion at the Γpoint, similar to the case of HgTe quantum well. With surface doping of magnetic elements, the quantum anomalous Hall effect could also be realized.

Pulsed sextupole injection for Beijing Advanced Photon Source with ultralow emittance

In this paper we present the physical design of the pulsed sextupole injection system for Beijing Advanced Photon Source (BAPS) with an ultralow emittance. The BAPS ring lattice is designed in such a way that two options of pulsed sextupole injection are allowed, i.e., with septum and pulsed sextupole in different drift spaces or in the same drift space. We give the magnetic parameters of the injection system and the optimal condition of the optical functions for both options. In addition, we find that the pulsed sextupole induces position-dependent dispersive effect and causes non-ignorable effect on the injection efficiency in a storage ring with a relatively small acceptance, which should be well considered.

A parameter space has been explored. Based on beam parameters scan and RF parameters scan, a set of optimized parameter designs for 50 km Circular Higgs Factory (CHF) with different RF frequency was proposed.

A Statistical Approach to Multifield Inflation: Many-field Perturbations Beyond Slow Roll

We study multifield contributions to the scalar power spectrum in an ensemble of six-field inflationary models obtained in string theory. We identify examples in which inflation occurs by chance, near an approximate inflection point, and we compute the primordial perturbations numerically, both exactly and using an array of truncated models. The scalar mass spectrum and the number of fluctuating fields are accurately described by a simple random matrix model. During the approach to the inflection point, bending trajectories and violations of slow roll are commonplace, and 'many-field' effects, in which three or more fields influence the perturbations, are often important. However, in a large fraction of models consistent with constraints on the tilt the signatures of multifield evolution occur on unobservably large scales. Our scenario is a concrete microphysical realization of quasi-single-field inflation, with scalar masses of order $H$, but the cubic and quartic couplings are typically too small to produce detectable non-Gaussianity. We argue that our results are characteristic of a broader class of models arising from multifield potentials that are natural in the Wilsonian sense.

Dirac semimetal and topological phase transitions in A3Bi (A=Na, K, Rb)

The three-dimensional (3D) Dirac point, where two Weyl points overlap in momentum space, is usually unstable and hard to realize. Here we show, based on the first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, that crystalline $A_3$Bi ($A$=Na, K, Rb) are Dirac semimetals with bulk 3D Dirac points protected by crystal symmetry. They possess non-trivial Fermi arcs on the surfaces, and can be driven into various topologically distinct phases by explicit breaking of symmetries. Giant diamagnetism, linear quantum magnetoresistance, and quantum spin-Hall effect will be expected for such compounds.

Chern semi-metal and Quantized Anomalous Hall Effect in HgCr2Se4

In three dimensional (3D) momentum space of solid crystal, a topological phase boundary separating the Chern insulating layers from normal insulating layers may exist, where the gap must be closed, resulting in a "Chern semi-metal" state with topologically unavoidable band-crossings at fermi level. This state, if found to exist, is a condensed-matter realization of chiral fermions (or called Weyl fermions) in (3+1)D, and should exhibit remarkable features, like magnetic monopoles in the bulk and fermi arcs on the surface. Here we predict, based on first-principles calculations, that such novel quantum state can be realized in a known ferromagnetic compound HgCr2Se4, with a single pair of Weyl fermions separated in momentum space. The characteristic feature of this state in HgCr2Se4 is the presence of quantum Hall effect without external magnetic field in its quantum-well structure.

Half-metallic Surface States and Topological Superconductivity in NaCoO$_2$ from first principles

Based on first-principles calculations, we predict a half-metallic surface state in layered bulk insulator NaCoO2, with tunable surface hole concentration. The half-metallic surface has a single Fermi surface with a helical spin texture, similar to the surface state of topological insulators, but with the key difference of time-reversal symmetry breaking in the present case. We propose the realization of topological superconductivity and Majorana fermions when the half-metallic surface states are in proximity contact with a conventional superconductor.

Universality in D-brane Inflation

We study the six-field dynamics of D3-brane inflation for a general scalar potential on the conifold, finding simple, universal behavior. We numerically evolve the equations of motion for an ensemble of more than 7 \times 10^7 realizations, drawing the coefficients in the scalar potential from statistical distributions whose detailed properties have demonstrably small effects on our results. When prolonged inflation occurs, it has a characteristic form: the D3-brane initially moves rapidly in the angular directions, spirals down to an inflection point in the potential, and settles into single-field inflation. The probability of N_{e} e-folds of inflation is a power law, P(N_{e}) \propto N_{e}^{-3}, and we derive the same exponent from a simple analytical model. The success of inflation is relatively insensitive to the initial conditions: we find attractor behavior in the angular directions, and the D3-brane can begin far above the inflection point without overshooting. In favorable regions of the parameter space, models yielding 60 e-folds of expansion arise approximately once in 10^3 trials. Realizations that are effectively single-field and give rise to a primordial spectrum of fluctuations consistent with WMAP, for which at least 120 e-folds are required, arise approximately once in 10^5 trials. The emergence of robust predictions from a six-field potential with hundreds of terms invites an analytic approach to multifield inflation.
