COCO-CN for Cross-Lingual Image Tagging, Captioning and Retrieval

This paper contributes to cross-lingual image annotation and retrieval in terms of data and baseline methods. We propose COCO-CN, a novel dataset enriching MS-COCO with manually written Chinese sentences and tags. For more effective annotation acquisition, we develop a recommendation-assisted collective annotation system, automatically providing an annotator with several tags and sentences deemed to be relevant with respect to the pictorial content. Having 20,342 images annotated with 27,218 Chinese sentences and 70,993 tags, COCO-CN is currently the largest Chinese-English dataset that provides a unified and challenging platform for cross-lingual image tagging, captioning and retrieval. We develop conceptually simple yet effective methods per task for learning from cross-lingual resources. Extensive experiments on the three tasks justify the viability of the proposed dataset and methods. Data and code are publicly available at https://github.com/li-xirong/coco-cn

The Sudakov form factor at four loops in maximal super Yang-Mills theory

The four-loop Sudakov form factor in maximal super Yang-Mills theory is analysed in detail. It is shown explicitly how to construct a basis of integrals that have a uniformly transcendental expansion in the dimensional regularisation parameter, further elucidating the number-theoretic properties of Feynman integrals. The physical form factor is expressed in this basis for arbitrary colour factor. In the nonplanar sector the required integrals are integrated numerically using a mix of sector-decomposition and Mellin-Barnes representation methods. Both the cusp as well as the collinear anomalous dimension are computed. The results show explicitly the violation of quadratic Casimir scaling at the four-loop order. A thorough analysis concerning the reliability of reported numerical uncertainties is carried out.

Four-Loop Nonplanar Cusp Anomalous Dimension in N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

The light-like cusp anomalous dimension is a universal function that controls infrared divergences in quite general quantum field theories. In the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory this function is fixed fully by integrability to the three-loop order. At four loops a non-planar correction appears which we obtain for the first time from a numerical computation of the Sudakov form factor. Key ingredients are widely applicable methods to control the number-theoretic aspects of the appearing integrals. Our result shows explicitly that quadratic Casimir scaling breaks down at four loops.

Symbiotic Radio: A New Communication Paradigm for Passive Internet-of-Things

In this paper, a novel technique, called symbiotic radio (SR), is proposed for passive Internet-of-Things (IoT), in which a backscatter device (BD) is integrated with a primary transmission. The primary transmitter is designed to assist the primary and BD transmissions, and the primary receiver decodes the information from the primary transmitter as well as the BD. We consider a multiple-input single-output (MISO) SR and the symbol period for BD transmission is designed to be either the same as or much longer than that of the primary system, resulting in parasitic or commensal relationship between the primary and BD transmissions. We first derive the achievable rates for the primary system and the BD transmission. Then, we formulate two transmit beamforming optimization problems, i.e., the weighted sum-rate maximization problem and the transmit power minimization problem, and solve these non-convex problems by applying semi-definite relaxation technique. In addition, a novel transmit beamforming structure is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the solutions. Simulation results show that when the BD transmission rate is properly designed, the proposed SR not only enables the opportunistic transmission for the BD via energy-efficient passive backscattering, but also enhances the achievable rate of the primary system by properly exploiting the additional signal path from the BD.

Imagination Based Sample Construction for Zero-Shot Learning

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) which aims to recognize unseen classes with no labeled training sample, efficiently tackles the problem of missing labeled data in image retrieval. Nowadays there are mainly two types of popular methods for ZSL to recognize images of unseen classes: probabilistic reasoning and feature projection. Different from these existing types of methods, we propose a new method: sample construction to deal with the problem of ZSL. Our proposed method, called Imagination Based Sample Construction (IBSC), innovatively constructs image samples of target classes in feature space by mimicking human associative cognition process. Based on an association between attribute and feature, target samples are constructed from different parts of various samples. Furthermore, dissimilarity representation is employed to select high-quality constructed samples which are used as labeled data to train a specific classifier for those unseen classes. In this way, zero-shot learning is turned into a supervised learning problem. As far as we know, it is the first work to construct samples for ZSL thus, our work is viewed as a baseline for future sample construction methods. Experiments on four benchmark datasets show the superiority of our proposed method.

Hidden-Bottom Pentaquarks

The LHCb Collaboration has recently reported strong evidences of the existence of pentaquark states in the hidden-charm baryon sector, the so-called $P_c(4380)^+$ and $P_c(4450)^+$ signals. Five-quark bound states in the hidden-charm sector were explored by us using, for the quark-quark interaction, a chiral quark model which successfully explains meson and baryon phenomenology, from the light to the heavy quark sector. We extend herein such study but to the hidden-bottom pentaquark sector, analyzing possible bound-states with spin-parity quantum numbers $J^P=\frac12^\pm$, $\frac32^\pm$ and $\frac52^\pm$, and in the $\frac12$ and $\frac32$ isospin sectors. We do not find positive parity hidden-bottom pentaquark states; however, several candidates with negative parity are found with dominant baryon-meson structures $Σ_b^{(\ast)}\bar{B}^{(\ast)}$. The calculated distances among any pair of quarks within the bound-state reflect that molecular-type bound-states are favored when only color-singlet configurations are considered in the coupled-channels calculation whereas compact pentaquarks, which are also deeply bound, can be found when hidden-color configurations are added. Finally, our findings resemble the ones found in the hidden-charm sector but, as expected, we find in the hidden-bottom sector larger binding energies and bigger contributions of the hidden-color configurations.

Analytic Two-Loop Higgs Amplitudes in Effective Field Theory and the Maximal Transcendentality Principle

We obtain for the first time the two-loop amplitudes for Higgs plus three gluons in Higgs effective field theory including dimension-seven operators. This provides the S-matrix elements for the top mass corrections for Higgs plus a jet production at LHC. The computation is based on the on-shell unitarity method combined with integration by parts reduction. We work in conventional dimensional regularization and obtain analytic expressions renormalized in the MS-bar scheme. The two-loop anomalous dimensions present operator mixing behavior. The infrared divergences agree with that predicted by Catani and the finite remainders take remarkably simple forms, where the maximally transcendental parts are identical to the corresponding results in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory. The parts of lower transcendentality turn out to be also largely determined by the N=4 results.

The S- and P-wave low-lying baryons in the chiral quark model

The $1S$, $2S$, $1P$ and $2P$ states of light baryons are investigated within the chiral quark model, paying particular attention to the well-known order reverse problem of $1P$ and $2S$ states. Besides a nonperturbative linear-screened confining interaction and a perturbative one-gluon exchange between quarks, we incorporate the Goldstone-boson exchanges taking into account not only the full octet of pseudoscalar mesons but also the scalar one. The scalar meson exchange potential simulates the higher order multi-pion exchange terms that appear in the chiral Lagrangian and its omission has been already admitted as a deficiency of the original model in describing, for instance, the $ρ-ω$ splitting. The numerical approach to the three body bound state problem is the so-called Gaußian expansion method, which is able to get a precision as good as Faddeev calculations. With a set of parameters fixed to different hadron and hadron-hadron observables, we find that the chiral potential could play an important role towards the issue on the mass order reverse problem. We extend our calculation to the $qqQ$ and $qQQ$ sectors (with $q$ representing a light $u$-, $d$-, or $s$-quark and $Q$ denoting the charm quark or the bottom one) in which many new states have been recently observed. Some tentative assignments are done attending to the agreement between theoretical and experimental masses; however, we admit that other sources of information are needed in order to make strong claims about the nature of these states.

Optimal Resource Allocation in Full-Duplex Ambient Backscatter Communication Networks for Wireless-Powered IoT

This paper considers an ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) network in which a full-duplex access point (FAP) simultaneously transmits downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals to its legacy user (LU) and receives uplink signals backscattered from multiple BDs in a time-division-multiple-access manner. To maximize the system throughput and ensure fairness, we aim to maximize the minimum throughput among all BDs by jointly optimizing the backscatter time and reflection coefficients of the BDs, and the FAP's subcarrier power allocation, subject to the LU's throughput constraint, the BDs' harvested-energy constraints, and other practical constraints. For the case with a single BD, we obtain closed-form solutions and propose an efficient algorithm by using the Lagrange duality method. For the general case with multiple BDs, we propose an iterative algorithm by leveraging the block coordinated decent and successive convex optimization techniques. We further show the convergence performances of the proposed algorithms and analyze their complexities. In addition, we study the throughput region which characterizes the Pareto-optimal throughput trade-offs among all BDs. Finally, extensive simulation results show that the proposed joint design achieves significant throughput gain as compared to the benchmark schemes.

Optimal Resource Allocation in Full-Duplex Ambient Backscatter Communication Networks for Green IoT

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) enables wireless-powered backscatter devices (BDs) to transmit information over ambient radio-frequency (RF) carriers without using an RF transmitter, and thus has emerged as a promising technology for green Internet-of-Things. This paper considers an AmBC network in which a full-duplex access point (FAP) simultaneously transmits downlink orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals to its legacy user (LU) and receives uplink signals backscattered from multiple BDs in a time-division-multiple-access manner. To enhance the system performance from multiple design dimensions and ensure fairness, we maximize the minimum throughput among all BDs by jointly optimizing the BDs' backscatter time portions, the BDs' power reflection coefficients, and the FAP's subcarrier power allocation, subject to the LU's throughput constraint, the BDs' harvested-energy constraints, and other practical constraints. As such, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm for solving the formulated non-convex problem by leveraging the block coordinated decent and successive convex optimization techniques. We further show the convergence of the proposed algorithm, and analyze its complexity. Finally, extensive simulation results show that the proposed joint design achieves significant throughput gains as compared to the benchmark scheme with equal resource allocation.

Gorenstein flat modules with respect to duality pairs

Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a class of left $R$-modules, $\mathcal{Y}$ be a class of right $R$-modules. In this paper, we introduce and study Gorenstein $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y})$-flat modules as a common generalization of some known modules such as Gorenstein flat modules \cite{EJT93}, Gorenstein $n$-flat modules \cite{SUU14}, Gorenstein $\mathcal{B}$-flat modules \cite{EIP17}, Gorenstein AC-flat modules \cite{BEI17}, $Ω$-Gorenstein flat modules \cite{EJ00} and so on. We show that the class of all Gorenstein $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y})$-flat modules have a strong stability. In particular, when $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y})$ is a perfect (symmetric) duality pair, we give some functorial descriptions of Gorenstein $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y})$-flat dimension, and construct a hereditary abelian model structure on $R$-Mod whose cofibrant objects are exactly the Gorenstein $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y})$-flat modules. These results unify the corresponding results of the aforementioned modules.

Cooperative Ambient Backscatter Communications for Green Internet-of-Things

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) enables a passive backscatter device to transmit information to a reader using ambient RF signals, and has emerged as a promising solution to green Internet-of-Things (IoT). Conventional AmBC receivers are interested in recovering the information from the ambient backscatter device (A-BD) only. In this paper, we propose a cooperative AmBC (CABC) system in which the reader recovers information not only from the A-BD, but also from the RF source. We first establish the system model for the CABC system from spread spectrum and spectrum sharing perspectives. Then, for flat fading channels, we derive the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) detector, suboptimal linear detectors as well as successive interference-cancellation (SIC) based detectors. For frequency-selective fading channels, the system model for the CABC system over ambient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) carriers is proposed, upon which a low-complexity optimal ML detector is derived. For both kinds of channels, the bit-error-rate (BER) expressions for the proposed detectors are derived in closed forms. Finally, extensive numerical results have shown that, when the A-BD signal and the RF-source signal have equal symbol period, the proposed SIC-based detectors can achieve near-ML detection performance for typical application scenarios, and when the A-BD symbol period is longer than the RF-source symbol period, the existence of backscattered signal in the CABC system can enhance the ML detection performance of the RF-source signal, thanks to the beneficial effect of the backscatter link when the A-BD transmits at a lower rate than the RF source.

The nonplanar cusp and collinear anomalous dimension at four loops in ${\mathcal N} = 4$ SYM theory

We present numerical results for the nonplanar lightlike cusp and collinear anomalous dimension at four loops in ${\mathcal N} = 4$ SYM theory, which we infer from a calculation of the Sudakov form factor. The latter is expressed as a rational linear combination of uniformly transcendental integrals for arbitrary colour factor. Numerical integration in the nonplanar sector reveals explicitly the breakdown of quadratic Casimir scaling at the four-loop order. A thorough analysis of the reported numerical uncertainties is carried out.

A 33-year NPP monitoring study in southwest China by the fusion of multi-source remote sensing and station data

Knowledge of regional net primary productivity (NPP) is important for the systematic understanding of the global carbon cycle. In this study, multi-source data were employed to conduct a 33-year regional NPP study in southwest China, at a 1-km scale. A multi-sensor fusion framework was applied to obtain a new normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time series from 1982 to 2014, combining the respective advantages of the different remote sensing datasets. As another key parameter for NPP modeling, the total solar radiation was calculated by the improved Yang hybrid model (YHM), using meteorological station data. The verification described in this paper proved the feasibility of all the applied data processes, and a greatly improved accuracy was obtained for the NPP calculated with the final processed NDVI. The spatio-temporal analysis results indicated that 68.07% of the study area showed an increasing NPP trend over the past three decades. Significant heterogeneity was found in the correlation between NPP and precipitation at a monthly scale, specifically, the negative correlation in the growing season and the positive correlation in the dry season. The lagged positive correlation in the growing season and no lag in the dry season indicated the important impact of precipitation on NPP.

Structure-based control of complex networks with nonlinear dynamics

What can we learn about controlling a system solely from its underlying network structure? Here we adapt a recently developed framework for control of networks governed by a broad class of nonlinear dynamics that includes the major dynamic models of biological, technological, and social processes. This feedback-based framework provides realizable node overrides that steer a system towards any of its natural long term dynamic behaviors, regardless of the specific functional forms and system parameters. We use this framework on several real networks, identify the topological characteristics that underlie the predicted node overrides, and compare its predictions to those of structural controllability in control theory. Finally, we demonstrate this framework's applicability in dynamic models of gene regulatory networks and identify nodes whose override is necessary for control in the general case, but not in specific model instances.

The structure of pentaquarks $Ω_c^0$ in the chiral quark model

Recently, the experimental results of LHCb Collaboration suggested the existence of five new excited states of $Ω_c^0$, $Ω_c(3000)^0$, $Ω_c(3050)^0$, $Ω_c(3066)^0$, $Ω_c(3090)^0$ and $Ω_c(3119)^0$, the quantum numbers of these new particles are not determined now. To understand the nature of the states, a dynamical calculation of 5-quark systems with quantum numbers $IJ^P=0(\frac{1}{2})^-$, $0(\frac{3}{2})^-$ and $0(\frac{5}{2})^-$ is performed in the framework of chiral quark model with the help of gaussian expansion method. The results show the $Ξ-\bar{D}$, $Ξ_c\bar{K}$ and $Ξ_c^*\bar{K}$ are possible the candidates of these new particles. The distances between quark pairs suggest that the nature of pentaquark states.

Modulation in the Air: Backscatter Communication over Ambient OFDM Carrier

Ambient backscatter communication (AmBC) enables radio-frequency (RF) powered backscatter devices (BDs) (e.g., sensors, tags) to modulate their information bits over ambient RF carriers in an over-the-air manner. This technology also called "modulation in the air", thus has emerged as a promising solution to achieve green communications for future Internet-of-Things. This paper studies an AmBC system by leveraging the ambient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulated signals in the air. We first model such AmBC system from a spread-spectrum communication perspective, upon which a novel joint design for BD waveform and receiver detector is proposed. The BD symbol period is designed to be in general an integer multiplication of the OFDM symbol period, and the waveform for BD bit `0' maintains the same state within a BD symbol period, while the waveform for BD bit `1' has a state transition in the middle of each OFDM symbol period within a BD symbol period. In the receiver detector design, we construct the test statistic that cancels out the direct-link interference by exploiting the repeating structure of the ambient OFDM signals due to the use of cyclic prefix. For the system with a single-antenna receiver, the maximum-likelihood detector is proposed to recover the BD bits, for which the optimal threshold is obtained in closed-form expression. For the system with a multi-antenna receiver, we propose a new test statistic, and derive the optimal detector. Moreover, practical timing synchronization algorithms are proposed, and we also analyze the effect of various system parameters on the system performance. Finally, extensive numerical results are provided to verify that the proposed transceiver design can improve the system bit-error-rate (BER) performance and the operating range significantly, and achieve much higher data rate, as compared to the conventional design.

Cutting through form factors and cross sections of non-protected operators in N=4 SYM

We study the form factors of the Konishi operator, the prime example of non-protected operators in N=4 SYM theory, via the on-shell unitarity methods. Since the Konishi operator is not protected by supersymmetry, its form factors share many features with those in QCD, such as the occurrence of rational terms and of UV divergences that require renormalization. A subtle point is that this operator depends on the spacetime dimension. This requires a modification when calculating its form factors via unitarity methods. We derive a rigorous prescription that implements this modification to all loop orders and obtain the two-point form factor up to two-loop order and the three-point form factor to one-loop order. From these form factors, we construct an IR-finite cross section type quantity, namely the inclusive decay rate of the (off-shell) Konishi operator to any final (on-shell) state. Via the optical theorem, it is connected to the imaginary part of the two-point correlation function. We extract the Konishi anomalous dimension up to two-loop order from it.
