Macroscopic transports in a rotational system with an electromagnetic field

In this work, we explore macroscopic transport phenomena associated with a rotational system in the presence of an external orthogonal electromagnetic field. Simply based on the lowest Landau level approximation, we derive nontrivial expressions for chiral density and various currents consistently by adopting small angular velocity expansion or Kubo formula. While the generation of anomalous electric current is due to the pseudo gauge field effect of the spin-rotation coupling, the chiral density and current can be simply explained with the help of Lorentz boosts. Finally, Lorentz covariant forms can be obtained by unifying our results and the magnetovorticity effect.

Charged rho superconductor in the presence of magnetic field and rotation

In this work, we mainly explore the possibility of charged rho superconductor (CRS) in the presence of parallel magnetic field and rotation within three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasino model. By following similar schemes as in the previous studies of charged pion superfluid (CPS), the CRS is found to be favored for both choices of Schwinger phase in Minkovski and curved spaces. Due to the stability of the internal spin structure, charged rho begins to condensate at a smaller threshold of angular velocity than charged pion for the given large magnetic fields. Even the axial vector meson condensation is checked -- the conclusion is that CRS is the robust ground state at strong magnetic field and fast rotation, which actually sustains to very large angular velocity.

A field theoretical model for quarkyonic matter

The possibility that nuclear matter at a density relevant to the interior of massive neutron stars may be a quarkynoic matter has attracted considerable recent interest. In this work, we construct a field theoretical model to describe the quarkyonic matter, that would allow quantitative and systematic calculations of its various properties. This is implemented by synthesizing the Walecka model together with the quark-meson model, where both quark and nucleon degrees of freedom are present based on the quarkyonic scenario. With this model we compute at mean-field level the thermodynamic properties of the symmetric nuclear matter and calibrate model parameters through well-known nuclear physics measurements. We find this model gives a very good description of the symmetric nuclear matter from moderate to high baryon density and demonstrates a continuous transition from nucleon-dominance to quark-dominance for the system.

Effects of a parallel electromagnetic field in three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

In this work, we explore the ground state of QCD system and the relevant collective modes in a parallel electromagnetic (EM) field within the effective three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. From the features of neutral chiral condensates, three critical EM fields are identified in our study: $e\bar{I}_2^{c_i}~(i=1,2,3)$. Moreover, competition between QCD and QED anomalies is found: the negativeness of $π_{\rm d}^*$ and $π_{\rm s}^*$ is a signal of QCD anomaly dominance for all the flavors, and the positiveness of $π_{\rm s}^*$ beyond $e\bar{I}_2^{c_1}$ indicates QED anomaly dominance for strange quark. For the lowest-lying neutral collective modes, the masses of $Π$ and $H$ modes reduce to zero around the critical EM fields and the scalar-pseudoscalar components are exchanged between $Σ$ and $H$ modes, as can be seen in the crossing structure.

The electromagnetic field effects in in-out and in-in formalisms

In this work, we compare the effects of electromagnetic (EM) fields on strong coupling systems in two formalisms: in-out and in-in, which are different from each other when a finite electric field is present. The chiral effective Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is adopted for this study, and two kinds of EM field distributions are considered: pure electric field and parallel EM (PEM) field with equal electric and magnetic components. For both distributions, we find that the results of in-out and in-in formalisms start to diverge when the electric field $(qE)^{1/2}$ is larger than the chiral effective mass $M=[m^2+(π^0)^2]^{1/2}$, that is, when the Schwinger pair production mechanism becomes important. Besides, the chiral restorations are stiffer in the in-in formalism, especially the transition shifts to first-order instead of the second-order for the PEM field. The neutral collective modes are also explored accordingly: For the PEM field, more precise calculations show nonmonotonic features of their pole masses due to parity mixing, and then the Goldstone-like mode is found to be noneffective at the end of chiral rotation because of chiral anomaly.

Quark fluctuations and anisotropic confinement in magnetic fields

We study the string tension $σ$ of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in external magnetic fields $B$ by combining the quasi-particle treatments for quarks with the collective treatments for gluons. We utilize the 1/Nc-expansion (Nc: number of colors) and the framework of Wilson's strong coupling expansion at long distance, and compare the resulting string tensions with the lattice data. The effects of magnetic fields are taken into account through the dielectric functions, which are evaluated from the one-loop polarization due to light flavor quarks with $B$-dependent effective masses $M_{\rm f}(B)\ ({\rm f}=u,d,s)$. All Landau levels are adopted in the calculations so that we can explore the string tensions from weak to strong magnetic fields. For the effective quark masses, we use a simple parameterization: $M_{\rm f}(B) = M_{\rm f}(0) + C_B |q_{\rm f}B|^{1/2}$ with $q_{\rm f}$ the electric charge of a given flavor and $C_B$ an adaptive parameter. We find that the parameter $C_B$ needs to be small, $C_B \lesssim 0.05$, to qualitatively reproduce the trends of lattice QCD results for $0 \leq |eB| \lesssim 1.5\, {\rm GeV}^2$. The quantitative agreement is found for $C_B \simeq 0$ and the strong coupling $α_S \simeq 5$ in the infrared.

Rotation induced charged pion condensation in a strong magnetic field: A Nambu--Jona-Lasino model study

We investigate the possibility of charged pion condensation in the presence of parallel rotation and magnetic field within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with quarks as the fundamental degrees of freedom. Previous study based on non-interacting Klein-Gordon theory for pions showed that the charged pions will undergo Bose-Einstein condensation under this circumstance [Y. Liu and I. Zahed, Phys. Rev. Lett. ${\bf 120}$, 032001 (2018)]. In this work, we take into account the internal quark structures of charged pions self-consistently through quark polarization loops in an interacting theory, i.e., the Nambu--Jona-Lasino model. The stability of the system is explored against the formation of a nonzero expectation value of the composite charged pion field $\bar{u}iγ_5d$. We find that two competing effects are induced by the rotation: the isospin enhancement which favors charged pion condensation and the spin breaking which disfavors the condensation. For a strong magnetic field ($\sqrt{eB}\sim1{\rm GeV}$) and system size of a few fermi, the isospin enhancement effect is stronger than the spin breaking one, and the charged pion condensation becomes energetically favored beyond a critical angular velocity of a few MeV.

"Splitting" magnetic catalysis effect prevents vacuum superconductivity in strong magnetic fields

By comparing the two- and three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) models, we demonstrate that the naively expected vacuum superconductivity (VSC) in constant magnetic field ${\bf B}=B\hat z$ is disfavored due to the splitting magnetic catalysis effect (MCE) to chiral condensates with different quark flavors. Based on the simple two-flavor NJL model, we illuminate, in the lowest Landau level approximation, the similar origins of $π^0$ and $\barρ^+_1$ ($ρ^+$ meson with spin $S_z=1$) mass reductions with smaller $B$ and their different features at larger $B$. With the full Landau levels, the two-flavor NJL model is found to be invalid to study the magnetic field effect to $\barρ^+_1$ meson with physical vacuum mass $775~{\rm MeV}$. Then, restricted to $ρ$ meson mass below two-quark threshold in vacuum, that is $m_ρ^v<2m_q^v$, it is found that $π^0$ mass decreases and then increases with $B$ slowly, and $\barρ^+_1$ mass vanishing point is delayed to larger $B$ compared to the point particle result. In the more realistic three-flavor NJL model, all the quark masses split in strong magnetic field as a combinatorial result of their different current masses and electric charges. By choosing a vacuum mass closer to the physical one, $\barρ^+_1$ meson mass is found to be consistent with the LQCD results semi-quantitatively in smaller $B$ region but increase in larger $B$ region. These features are mainly outcomes of the interplay between the $S_z-B$ coupling effect and splitting MCE to the composite $u$ and $d$ quarks, which definitely disfavors VSC when the latter dominates. Furthermore, mesonic flavor mixing is modified by $B$ among the neutral pseudoscalars: $π^0,η_0$ and $η_8$, which is very important to suppress the mass enhancement of the effective mass eigenstates at large $B$.

Polarization transfer in hyperon decays and its effect in relativistic nuclear collisions

We calculate the contribution to the polarization of $Λ$ hyperons in relativistic nuclear collisions at high energy from the decays of $Σ^*(1385)$ and $Σ^0$, which are the predominant sources of $Λ$ production besides the primary component, as a function of the $Λ$ momentum. Particularly, we estimate the longitudinal component of the mean spin vector as a function of the azimuthal angle in the transverse plane, assuming that primary $Σ^*$ and $Σ^0$ polarization follow the predictions of local thermodynamic equilibrium in a relativistic fluid. Provided that the rapidity dependence around midrapidity of polarization is negligible, we find that this component of the overall spin vector has a very similar pattern to the primary one. Therefore, we conclude that the secondary decays cannot account for the discrepancy in sign between experimental data and hydrodynamic model predictions of the longitudinal polarization of $Λ$ hyperons recently measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC.

Gravitational Wave from Phase Transition inside Neutron Stars

In this work, we propose a new source for gravitational wave (GW) radiation associated with the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase transition in the inner cores of neutron stars. The mechanism is based on the bubble dynamics during the first-order phase transition from nuclear matter to quark matter. We identify the characteristic frequency to be of order $ω_c\sim 10^6~{\rm rad/s}$ for this kind of sources and the strain magnitude ($h\sim 10^{-24}$ for a neutron star at a distance of $0.1~{\rm Mpc}$) reachable by future GW detectors. The GW spectra are shown to be useful to check the transition nature at high baryon chemical potential as well as to constrain the radius and density of the inner cores, which are still indistinct up to now.

Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in a parallel electromagnetic field

We explore the features of the $U_A(1)$ and chiral symmetry breaking of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model without the Kobayashi-Maskawa-'t Hooft determinant term in the presence of a parallel electromagnetic field. We show that the electromagnetic chiral anomaly can induce both finite neutral pion condensate and isospin-singlet pseudo-scalar $η$ condensate and thus modifies the chiral symmetry breaking pattern. In order to characterize the strength of the $U_A(1)$ symmetry breaking, we evaluate the susceptibility associated with the $U_A(1)$ charge. The result shows that the susceptibility contributed from the chiral anomaly is consistent with the behavior of the corresponding $η$ condensate. The spectra of the mesonic excitations are also studied.

Competition between magnetic catalysis effect and chiral rotation effect

In this work, we explore the competition between magnetic catalysis effect and chiral rotation effect in a general parallel electromagnetic field within the effective Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. For a given electric field $E$ at zero temperature, the mass gap shows three different features with respect to an increasing magnetic field $B$: increasing monotonically, decreasing after increasing and decreasing monotonically. By making use of strong magnetic field approximation, we illuminate that this is due to the competition between catalysis effect and chiral rotation effect induced both by the magnetic field, and a critical electric field $\sqrt{eE_c}=86.4~{\rm MeV}$ is found beyond which the mass gap will eventually decrease at large $B$. As only large magnetic field is relevant for the derivation, the critical electric field does not depend on the temperature $T$ or chemical potential $μ$.

Chiral symmetry breaking in a semi-localized magnetic field

In this work, I'm going to explore the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking and restoration in a solvable magnetic distribution within Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The special semi-localized static magnetic field can roughly simulate the realistic situation in peripheral heavy ion collisions, thus the study is important for the dynamical evolution of quark matter. I find that the magnetic field dependent contribution from discrete spectra usually dominates over that from continuum ones and chiral symmetry breaking is locally catalyzed by both the magnitude and scale of the magnetic field.

Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and vortex-antivortex lattice melting in two-dimensional Fermi gases with $p$- or $d$-wave pairing

We present a theoretical study of the finite-temperature Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) and vortex-antivortex lattice (VAL) melting transitions in two-dimensional Fermi gases with $p$- or $d$-wave pairing. For both pairings, when the interaction is tuned from weak to strong attractions, we observe a quantum phase transition from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluidity to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of difermions. The KT and VAL transition temperatures increase during this BCS-BEC transition and approach constant values in the deep BEC region. The BCS-BEC transition is characterized by the non-analyticities of the chemical potential, the superfluid order parameter, and the sound velocities as functions of the interaction strength at both zero and finite temperatures; however, the temperature effect tends to weaken the non-analyticities comparing to the zero temperature case. The effect of mismatched Fermi surfaces on the $d$-wave pairing is also studied.

On electrodynamics of chiral matter

Many-body systems with chiral fermions can exhibit novel transport phenomena that violate parity and time reversal symmetries, such as the chiral magnetic effect, the anomalous Hall effect, and the anomalous generation of charge. Based on the Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics, we examine some electromagnetic and optical properties of such systems including the electrostatics, the magnetostatics, the propagation of electromagnetic waves, the novel optical effects, etc.

A quarksonic matter at high isospin density

Analogous to the quarkyonic matter at high baryon density in which the quark Fermi seas and the baryonic excitations coexist, it is argued that a "quarksonic matter" phase appears at high isospin density where the quark (antiquark) Fermi seas and the mesonic excitations coexist. We explore this phase in detail in both large $N_c$ and asymptotically free limits: In large $N_c$ limit, we sketch a phase diagram for the quarksonic matter. In the asymptotically free limit, we study the pion superfluidity and thermodynamics of the quarksonic matter by using both perturbative calculations and effective model.

Solitonic modulation and Lifshitz point in an external magnetic field within Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We study the inhomogeneous solitonic modulation of a chiral condensate within the effective Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model when a constant external magnetic field is present. The self-consistent Pauli-Villars regularization scheme is adopted to manipulate the ultraviolet divergence encountered in the thermodynamic quantities. In order to determine the chiral restoration lines efficiently, a new kind of Ginzburg-Landau expansion approach is proposed here. At zero temperature, we find that both the upper and lower boundaries of the solitonic modulation oscillate with the magnetic field in the $μ$--$B$ phase diagram which is actually the de Hass-van Alphan (dHvA) oscillation. It is very interesting to find out how the tricritical Lifshitz point $(T_L,μ_L)$ evolves with the magnetic field: There are also dHvA oscillations in the $T_L$--$B$ and $μ_L$--$B$ curves, though the tricritical temperature $T_L$ increases monotonically with the magnetic field.

Electromagnetic triangle anomaly and neutral pion condensation in QCD vacuum

We study the QCD vacuum structure under the influence of an electromagnetic field with a nonzero second Lorentz invariant $I_2=\vec{E}\cdot{\vec B}$. We show that the presence of $I_2$ can induce neutral pion ($π^0$) condensation in the QCD vacuum through the electromagnetic triangle anomaly. Within the frameworks of chiral perturbation theory at leading small-momenta expansion as well as the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model at leading $1/N_c$ expansion, we quantify the dependence of the $π^0$ condensate on $I_2$. The stability of the $π^0$-condensed vacuum against the Schwinger charged pair production due to electric field is also discussed.
