The Fujiki class and positive degree maps

We show that a map between complex-analytic manifolds, at least one of which is in the Fujiki class, is a biholomorphism under a natural condition on the second cohomologies. We use this to establish that, with mild restrictions, a certain relation of "domination" introduced by Gromov is in fact a partial order.

A family of domains associated with $μ$-synthesis

We introduce a family of domains --- which we call the $μ_{1,n}$-quotients --- associated with an aspect of $μ$-synthesis. We show that the natural association that the symmetrized polydisc has with the corresponding spectral unit ball is also exhibited by the $μ_{1,n}$-quotient and its associated unit "$μ_E$-ball". Here, $μ_E$ is the structured singular value for the case $E = \{[w]\oplus(z I_{n-1})\in \mathbb{C}^{n\times n}: z,w\in \mathbb{C}\}$, n = 2, 3, 4,... Specifically: we show that, for such an $E$, the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem with matricial data in a unit "$μ_E$-ball", and in general position in a precise sense, is equivalent to a Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem for the associated $μ_{1,n}$-quotient. Along the way, we present some characterizations for the $μ_{1,n}$-quotients.

Proper holomorphic maps between bounded symmetric domains revisited

We prove that a proper holomorphic map between two bounded symmetric domains of the same dimension, one of them being irreducible, is a biholomorphism. Our methods allow us to give a single, all-encompassing argument that unifies the various special cases in which this result is known. We discuss an application of these methods to domains having noncompact automorphism groups that are not assumed to act transitively.

Rigidity of holomorphic maps between fiber spaces

In the study of holomorphic maps, the term "rigidity" refers to certain types of results that give us very specific information about a general class of holomorphic maps owing to the geometry of their domains or target spaces. Under this theme, we begin by studying when, given two compact connected complex manifolds $X$ and $Y$, a degree-one holomorphic map $f: Y\to X$ is a biholomorphism. Given that the real manifolds underlying $X$ and $Y$ are diffeomorphic, we provide a condition under which $f$ is a biholomorphism. Using this result, we deduce a rigidity result for holomorphic self-maps of the total space of a holomorphic fiber space. Lastly, we consider products $X=X_1\times X_2$ and $Y=Y_1\times Y_2$ of compact connected complex manifolds. When $X_1$ is a Riemann surface of genus $\geq 2$, we show that any non-constant holomorphic map $F:Y\to X$ is of a special form.

Model pseudoconvex domains and bumping

The Levi geometry at weakly pseudoconvex boundary points of domains in C^n, n \geq 3, is sufficiently complicated that there are no universal model domains with which to compare a general domain. Good models may be constructed by bumping outward a pseudoconvex, finite-type Ω\subset C^3 in such a way that: i) pseudoconvexity is preserved, ii) the (locally) larger domain has a simpler defining function, and iii) the lowest possible orders of contact of the bumped domain with \bdyΩ, at the site of the bumping, are realised. When Ω\subset C^n, n\geq 3, it is, in general, hard to meet the last two requirements. Such well-controlled bumping is possible when Ωis h-extendible/semiregular. We examine a family of domains in C^3 that is strictly larger than the family of h-extendible/semiregular domains and construct explicit models for these domains by bumping.

The local polynomial hull near a degenerate CR singularity -- Bishop discs revisited

Let S be a smooth real surface in C^2 and let p\in S be a point at which the tangent plane is a complex line. How does one determine whether or not S is locally polynomially convex at such a p --- i.e. at a CR singularity ? Even when the order of contact of T_p(S) with S at p equals 2, no clean characterisation exists; difficulties are posed by parabolic points. Hence, we study non-parabolic CR singularities. We show that the presence or absence of Bishop discs around certain non-parabolic CR singularities is completely determined by a Maslov-type index. This result subsumes all known facts about Bishop discs around order-two, non-parabolic CR singularities. Sufficient conditions for Bishop discs have earlier been investigated at CR singularities having high order of contact with T_p(S). These results relied upon a subharmonicity condition, which fails in many simple cases. Hence, we look beyond potential theory and refine certain ideas going back to Bishop.

Polynomial approximation, local polynomial convexity, and degenerate CR singularities -- II

We provide some conditions for the graph of a Hoelder-continuous function on \bar{D}, where \bar{D} is a closed disc in the complex plane, to be polynomially convex. Almost all sufficient conditions known to date --- provided the function (say F) is smooth --- arise from versions of the Weierstrass Approximation Theorem on \bar{D}. These conditions often fail to yield any conclusion if rank_R(DF) is not maximal on a sufficiently large subset of \bar{D}. We bypass this difficulty by introducing a technique that relies on the interplay of certain plurisubharmonic functions. This technique also allows us to make some observations on the polynomial hull of a graph in C^2 at an isolated complex tangency.

Uniform algebras generated by holomorphic and close-to-harmonic functions

The initial motivation for this paper is to discuss a more concrete approach to an approximation theorem of Axler and Shields, which says that the uniform algebra on the closed unit disc closure(D) generated by z and h --- where h is a nowhere-holomorphic harmonic function on D that is continuous up to the boundary --- equals the algebra of continuous functions on closure(D). The abstract tools used by Axler and Shields make harmonicity of h an essential condition for their result. We use the concepts of plurisubharmonicity and polynomial convexity to show that, in fact, the same conclusion is reached if h is replaced by h+R, where R is a non-harmonic perturbation whose Laplacian is "small" in a certain sense.

On the growth of the Bergman kernel near an infinite-type point

We study diagonal estimates for the Bergman kernels of certain model domains in $\mathbb{C}^2$ near boundary points that are of infinite type. To do so, we need a mild structural condition on the defining functions of interest that facilitates optimal upper and lower bounds. This is a mild condition; unlike earlier studies of this sort, we are able to make estimates for non-convex pseudoconvex domains as well. This condition quantifies, in some sense, how flat a domain is at an infinite-type boundary point. In this scheme of quantification, the model domains considered below range -- roughly speaking -- from being ``mildly infinite-type'' to very flat at the infinite-type points.

Obstructions to uniform estimates for solutions to the d-bar equation

We show that if, for every bounded d-bar-closed (0,1)-form f, a pseudoconvex domain Ωadmits a solution to $\bar\partial u=f$ that is continuous up to the boundary and has uniform estimates in terms of $\|f\|_\infty$, then each p\in bdy(Ω) must necessarily admit a peak function in the class $A(Ω):=\mathcal{O}(Ω)\cap\mathcal{C}(\overline\OM)$. We use this fact to examine some geometrical obstructions to uniform estimates for the d-bar equation.

Plurisubharmonic polynomials and bumping

We wish to study the problem of bumping outwards a pseudoconvex, finite-type domain Ω\subset C^n in such a way that pseudoconvexity is preserved and such that the lowest possible orders of contact of the bumped domain with bdy(Ω), at the site of the bumping, are explicitly realised. Generally, when Ω\subset C^n, n\geq 3, the known methods lead to bumpings with high orders of contact -- which are not explicitly known either -- at the site of the bumping. Precise orders are known for h-extendible/semiregular domains. This paper is motivated by certain families of non-semiregular domains in C^3. These families are identified by the behaviour of the least-weight plurisubharmonic polynomial in the Catlin normal form. Accordingly, we study how to perturb certain homogeneous plurisubharmonic polynomials without destroying plurisubharmonicity.

Some new observations on interpolation in the spectral unit ball

We present several results associated to a holomorphic-interpolation problem for the spectral unit ball Ω_n, n\geq 2. We begin by showing that a known necessary condition for the existence of a $\mathcal{O}(D;Ω_n)$-interpolant (D here being the unit disc in the complex plane), given that the matricial data are non-derogatory, is not sufficient. We provide next a new necessary condition for the solvability of the two-point interpolation problem -- one which is not restricted only to non-derogatory data, and which incorporates the Jordan structure of the prescribed data. We then use some of the ideas used in deducing the latter result to prove a Schwarz-type lemma for holomorphic self-maps of Ω_n, n\geq 2.

Functions preserving nonnegativity of matrices

The main goal of this work is to determine which entire functions preserve nonnegativity of matrices of a fixed order $n$ -- i.e., to characterize entire functions $f$ with the property that $f(A)$ is entrywise nonnegative for every entrywise nonnegative matrix $A$ of size $n\times n$. Towards this goal, we present a complete characterization of functions preserving nonnegativity of (block) upper-triangular matrices and those preserving nonnegativity of circulant matrices. We also derive necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for entire functions that preserve nonnegativity of symmetric matrices. We also show that some of these latter conditions characterize the even or odd functions that preserve nonnegativity of symmetric matrices.

Sharp Schwarz-type lemmas for the spectral unit ball

We provide generalisations of two Schwarz-type lemmas -- the first a result of Globevnik and the other due to Ransford and White -- for holomorphic mappings into the spectral unit ball. The first concerns mappings of the unit disc in C into the spectral unit ball, while the second concerns self- mappings. The aforementioned results apply to holomorphic mappings that map the origin to the origin. We extend these results to general holomorphic mappings into the spectral unit ball. We also show that our results are sharp.

Polynomial approximation, local polynomial convexity, and degenerate CR singularities

We begin with the following question: given a closed disc $\bar{D}$ in the complex plane and a complex-valued function F in $C(\bar{D})$, is the uniform algebra on $\bar{D}$ generated by z and F equal to $C(\bar{D})$ ? When F is in $C^1(\bar{D})$, this question is complicated by the presence of points in the surface S:=graph(F) that have complex tangents. Such points are called CR singularities. Let $p\in S$ be a CR singularity at which the order of contact of the tangent plane with S is greater than 2; i.e. a degenerate CR singularity. We provide sufficient conditions for S to be locally polynomially convex at the degenerate singularity p. This is useful because it is essential to know whether S is locally polynomially convex at a CR singularity in order to answer the initial question. To this end, we also present a general theorem on the uniform algebra generated by z and F, which we use in our investigations. This result may be of independent interest because it is applicable even to non-smooth, complex-valued F.

Nonisotropically balanced domains, Lempert function estimates, and the spectral Nevanlinna-Pick problem

We introduce the notion of a λ-nonisotropically balanced domain and show that the symmetrized polydisc in C^n, n \geq 2, is an example of such a domain. Given a λ-nonisotropically balanced domain Ω, we derive effective estimates from above and from below for the Lempert function at (0,z)\inΩ\timesΩ. We use these estimates to derive certain conditions for realising a two-point Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation in the symmetrized polydisc. Applying the ideas used in the derivation of our Lempert function estimates to the so-called spectral unit ball Ω_n, we deduce: a) a formula for the Lempert function at (0,W)\inΩ_n\timesΩ_n; and b) a necessary and sufficient condition for realising a two-point Nevanlinna- Pick interpolation in the spectral unit ball.

On analytic interpolation manifolds in boundaries of weakly pseudoconvex domains

Let $Ω$ be a bounded, weakly pseudoconvex domain in C^n, n > 1, with real-analytic boundary. A real-analytic submanifold $M \subset bdΩ$ is called an analytic interpolation manifold if every real-analytic function on M extends to a function belonging to $\Cal{O}(\barΩ)$. We provide sufficient conditions for M to be an analytic interpolation manifold. We give examples showing that neither of these conditions can be relaxed, as well as examples of analytic interpolation manifolds lying entirely within the set of weakly pseudoconvex points of $bdΩ$.

A procedure for constructing peak functions

We extend Bishop's one-fourth three-fourths principle for constructing peak functions belonging to a uniform algebra to a situation where the ``approximate barriers'' associated with the Bishop construction are not uniformly bounded.
