Forward Performance Processes under Multiple Default Risks

This article constructs a forward exponential utility in a market with multiple defaultable risks. Using the Jacod-Pham decomposition for random fields, we first characterize forward performance processes in a defaultable market under the default-free filtration. We then construct a forward utility via a system of recursively defined, indexed infinite-horizon backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with discounting, and establish the existence, uniqueness, and boundedness of their solutions. To verify the required (super)martingale property of the performance process, we develop a rigorous characterization of this property with respect to the general filtration in terms of a set of (in)equalities relative to the default-free filtration. We further extend the analysis to a stochastic factor model with ergodic dynamics. In this setting, we derive uniform bounds for the Markovian solutions of the infinite-horizon BSDEs, overcoming technical challenges arising from the special structure of the system of BSDEs in the defaultable setting. Passing to the ergodic limit, we identify the limiting BSDE and relate its constant to the risk-sensitive long-run growth rate of the optimal wealth process.

Probabilistic approximation of fully nonlinear second-order PIDEs with convergence rates for the universal robust limit theorem

This paper develops a probabilistic approximation scheme for a class of nonstandard, fully nonlinear second-order partial integro-differential equations (PIDEs) associated with nonlinear Levy processes under Peng's G-expectation framework. The PIDE features a supremum over a family of alpha-stable Levy measures, possibly degenerate diffusion coefficients, and a non-separable uncertainty set, which places it outside the scope of existing numerical theories for PIDEs. We construct a recursive, piecewise-constant approximation of the viscosity solution and establish explicit error estimates for the scheme. As a key application, our results yield quantitative convergence rates for the universal robust limit theorem under sublinear expectations. This provides a unified treatment of Peng's robust central limit theorem and law of large numbers, as well as the alpha-stable limit theorem of Bayraktar and Munk, together with explicit Berry-Esseen-type bounds.

Zero-sum Dynkin games under common and independent Poisson constraints

Zero-sum Dynkin games under Poisson constraints, where players can only stop at the event times of a Poisson process, have been studied widely in the recent literature. The constraint can be modelled in two ways: either both players share the same Poisson process (the common constraint) or each player has their own Poisson process (the independent constraint). In a Markovian framework, where payoffs are functions of an underlying diffusion, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the equivalence of the game's solution--comprising the value function and optimal stopping sets--under the common and independent constraints. Specifically, if the stopping sets of the maximiser and minimiser in the game under the common constraint are disjoint, then the solution to the game is the same under both the common and the independent constraint. However, the fact that the stopping sets are disjoint in the game under the independent constraint is not sufficient to guarantee that the solution of the game under the independent constraint is also the solution under the common constraint. To demonstrate the broad applicability of our results, we solve infinite-horizon Dynkin games satisfying the assumptions of our main theorems, using backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) techniques. This requires extending standard BSDE results from the finite-horizon setting to the infinite-horizon case, allowing for unbounded solutions.

Robust forward investment and consumption under drift and volatility uncertainties: A randomization approach

This paper studies robust forward investment and consumption preferences and optimal strategies for a risk-averse and ambiguity-averse agent in an incomplete financial market with drift and volatility uncertainties. We focus on non-zero volatility and constant relative risk aversion forward preferences. Given the non-convexity of the Hamiltonian with respect to uncertain volatilities, we first construct robust randomized forward preferences through endogenous randomization in an auxiliary market. {Therein, w}e derive the corresponding optimal and robust investment and consumption strategies. Furthermore, we show that such forward preferences and strategies, developed in the auxiliary market, remain optimal and robust in the physical market, offering a comprehensive {analysis} for forward investment and consumption under model uncertainty.

Recursive Optimal Stopping with Poisson Stopping Constraints

This paper solves a recursive optimal stopping problem with Poisson stopping constraints using the penalized backward stochastic differential equation (PBSDE) with jumps. Stopping in this problem is only allowed at Poisson random intervention times, and jumps play a significant role not only through the stopping times but also in the recursive objective functional and model coefficients. To solve the problem, we propose a decomposition method based on Jacod-Pham that allows us to separate the problem into a series of sub-problems between each pair of consecutive Poisson stopping times. To represent the value function of the recursive optimal stopping problem when the initial time falls between two consecutive Poisson stopping times and the generator is concave/convex, we leverage the comparison theorem of BSDEs with jumps. We then apply the representation result to American option pricing in a nonlinear market with Poisson stopping constraints.

Representation of forward performance criteria with random endowment via FBSDE and its application to forward optimized certainty equivalent

We extend the notion of forward performance criteria to settings with random endowment in incomplete markets. Building on these results, we introduce and develop the novel concept of \textit{forward optimized certainty equivalent (forward OCE)}, which offers a genuinely dynamic valuation mechanism that accommodates progressively adaptive market model updates, stochastic risk preferences, and incoming claims with arbitrary maturities. In parallel, we develop a new methodology to analyze the emerging stochastic optimization problems by directly studying the candidate optimal control processes for both the primal and dual problems. Specifically, we derive two new systems of forward-backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs) and establish necessary and sufficient conditions for optimality, and various equivalences between the two problems. This new approach is general and complements the existing one for forward performance criteria with random endowment based on backward stochastic partial differential equations (backward SPDEs) for the related value functions. We, also, consider representative examples for both forward performance criteria with random endowment and for forward OCE. Furthermore, for the case of exponential criteria, we investigate the connection between forward OCE and forward entropic risk measures.

Predictable Relative Forward Performance Processes: Multi-Agent and Mean Field Games for Portfolio Management

We introduce predictable relative forward performance processes (PRFPP) as a new framework for studying portfolio management within a competitive and incomplete market environment. Each agent trades a distinct stock following a binomial distribution with probabilities for a positive return depending on the market regime characterized by a non-traded stochastic factor. For both the finite population and mean field games, we construct and analyse PRFPPs for initial data of the CARA class along with the associated equilibrium strategies. We find that relative performance concerns do not necessarily lead to more investment in the risky asset compared to when there are no such concerns. Under some parameter constellations, agents short a stock with positive expected excess return. The binomial market setting facilitates a straightforward adjustment of risky asset skewness, enabling an analysis of its impact on investment behavior, an aspect that continuous-time frameworks cannot capture.

Convergence rates for Chernoff-type approximations of convex monotone semigroups

We provide explicit convergence rates for Chernoff-type approximations of convex monotone semigroups which have the form $S(t)f=\lim_{n\to\infty}I(\frac{t}{n})^n f$ for bounded continuous functions $f$. Under suitable conditions on the one-step operators $I(t)$ regarding the time regularity and consistency of the approximation scheme, we obtain $\|S(t)f-I(\frac{t}{n})^n f\|_\infty\leq cn^{-\gamma}$ for bounded Lipschitz continuous functions $f$, where $c\geq 0$ and $\gamma>0$ are determined explicitly. Moreover, the mapping $t\mapsto S(t)f$ is H\"older continuous. These results are closely related to monotone approximation schemes for viscosity solutions but are obtained independently by following a recently developed semigroup approach to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations which uniquely characterizes semigroups via their $\Gamma$-generators. The different approach allows to consider convex rather than sublinear equations and the results can be extended to unbounded functions by modifying the norm with a suitable weight function. Furthermore, up to possibly different consistency errors for the operators $I(t)$, the upper and lower bound for the error between the semigroup and the iterated operators are symmetric. The abstract results are applied to Nisio semigroups and limit theorems for convex expectations.

A robust $\alpha$-stable central limit theorem under sublinear expectation without integrability condition

This article relaxes the integrability condition imposed in the literature for the robust $\alpha$-stable central limit theorem under sublinear expectation. Specifically, for $\alpha \in(0,1]$, we prove that the normalized sums of i.i.d. non-integrable random variables $\big \{n^{-\frac{1}{\alpha}}\sum_{i=1}^{n}Z_{i}\big \}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ converge in distribution to $\tilde{\zeta}_{1}$, where $(\tilde{\zeta}_{t})_{t\in \lbrack0,1]}$ is a multidimensional nonlinear symmetric $\alpha$-stable process with a jump uncertainty set $\mathcal{L}$. The limiting $\alpha $-stable process is further characterized by a fully nonlinear partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) \[ \left \{ \begin{array} [c]{l}\displaystyle \partial_{t}u(t,x)-\sup \limits_{F_{\mu}\in \mathcal{L}}\left \{ \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}\delta_{\lambda}^{\alpha}u(t,x)F_{\mu}(d\lambda)\right \} =0,\\ \displaystyle u(0,x)=\phi(x),\ \ \ \forall(t,x)\in \lbrack0,1]\times \mathbb{R}^{d}, \end{array} \right. \] where \[ \delta_{\lambda}^{\alpha} u(t,x):= \left \{ \begin{array} [c]{l} u(t,x+\lambda)-u(t,x)-\langle D_{x}u(t,x),\lambda \mathbb{1}_{\{|\lambda |\leq 1\}}\rangle,\ \alpha=1,\\ u(t,x+\lambda)-u(t,x),\ \alpha \in(0,1). \end{array} \right. \] The main tools are a weak convergence approach to obtain the limiting process, a L\'evy-Khintchine representation of the nonlinear $\alpha$-stable process and a truncation technique to estimate the corresponding $\alpha$-stable L\'{e}vy measures. As a byproduct, the article also provides a probabilistic approach to prove the existence of the above fully nonlinear PIDE.

Vague and weak convergence of signed measures

Necessary and sufficient conditions for weak and vague convergence of measures are important for a diverse host of applications. This paper aims to give a comprehensive description of the relationship between the two modes of convergence when the measures are signed, which is largely absent from the literature. Furthermore, when the underlying space is $\mathbb{R}$, we study the relationship between vague convergence of signed measures and the pointwise convergence of their distribution functions.

A continuity theorem for generalised signed measures with an application to Karamata's Tauberian theorem

The Laplace transforms of positive measures on $\mathbb{R}_{+}$ converge if and only if their distribution functions converge at continuity points of the limiting measure. We extend this classical continuity theorem to the case of generalised signed Radon measures. The result for the signed case requires some additional conditions, which follow from recent results on vague convergence of signed Radon measures. As an application, we introduce a novel Tauberian condition for generalised signed Radon measures that extends Karamata's Tauberian theorem.

A universal robust limit theorem for nonlinear L\'evy processes under sublinear expectation

This article establishes a universal robust limit theorem under a sublinear expectation framework. Under moment and consistency conditions, we show that, for $\alpha \in(1,2)$, the i.i.d. sequence \[ \left \{ \left( \frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}\sum_{i=1}^{n}X_{i},\frac{1}{n}\sum _{i=1}^{n}Y_{i},\frac{1}{\sqrt[\alpha]{n}}\sum_{i=1}^{n}Z_{i}\right) \right \} _{n=1}^{\infty} \] converges in distribution to $\tilde{L}_{1}$, where $\tilde{L}_{t}=(\tilde {\xi}_{t},\tilde{\eta}_{t},\tilde{\zeta}_{t})$, $t\in [0,1]$, is a multidimensional nonlinear L\'{e}vy process with an uncertainty set $\Theta$ as a set of L\'{e}vy triplets. This nonlinear L\'{e}vy process is characterized by a fully nonlinear and possibly degenerate partial integro-differential equation (PIDE) \[ \left \{ \begin{array} [c]{l} \displaystyle \partial_{t}u(t,x,y,z)-\sup \limits_{(F_{\mu},q,Q)\in \Theta }\left \{ \int_{\mathbb{R}^{d}}\delta_{\lambda}u(t,x,y,z)F_{\mu}(d\lambda)\right. \\ \displaystyle \text{\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ }\left. +\langle D_{y}u(t,x,y,z),q\rangle+\frac{1}{2}tr[D_{x}^{2}u(t,x,y,z)Q]\right \} =0,\\ \displaystyle u(0,x,y,z)=\phi(x,y,z),\ \ \forall(t,x,y,z)\in \lbrack 0,1]\times \mathbb{R}^{3d}, \end{array} \right. \] with $\delta_{\lambda}u(t,x,y,z):=u(t,x,y,z+\lambda)-u(t,x,y,z)-\langle D_{z}u(t,x,y,z),\lambda \rangle$. To construct the limit process $(\tilde{L}_{t})_{t\in \lbrack0,1]}$, we develop a novel weak convergence approach based on the notions of tightness and weak compactness on a sublinear expectation space. We further prove a new type of L\'{e}vy-Khintchine representation formula to characterize $(\tilde{L}_{t})_{t\in [0,1]}$. As a byproduct, we also provide a probabilistic approach to prove the existence of the above fully nonlinear degenerate PIDE.

A new monotonicity condition for ergodic BSDEs and ergodic control with super-quadratic Hamiltonians

We establish the existence (and in an appropriate sense uniqueness) of Markovian solutions for ergodic BSDEs under a novel monotonicity condition. Our monotonicity condition allows us to prove existence even when the driver f has arbitrary (in particular super-quadratic) growth in z, which reveals an interesting trade-off between monotonicity and growth for ergodic BSDEs. The technique of proof is to establish a probabilistic representation of the derivative of the Markovian solution, and then use this representation to obtain a-priori estimates. Our study is motivated by applications to ergodic control, and we use our existence result to prove the existence of optimal controls for a class of ergodic control problems with potentially super-quadratic Hamiltonians. We also treat a class of drivers coming from the construction of forward performance processes, and interpret our monotonicity condition in this setting.

Callable convertible bonds under liquidity constraints and hybrid priorities

This paper investigates the callable convertible bond problem in the presence of a liquidity constraint modelled by Poisson signals. We assume that neither the bondholder nor the firm has absolute priority when they stop the game simultaneously, but instead, a proportion $m\in[0,1]$ of the bond is converted to the firm's stock and the rest is called by the firm. The paper thus generalizes the special case studied in [Liang and Sun, Dynkin games with Poisson random intervention times, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, 57 (2019), 2962-2991] where the bondholder has priority ($m=1$), and presents a complete solution to the callable convertible bond problem with liquidity constraint. The callable convertible bond is an example of a Dynkin game, but falls outside the standard paradigm since the payoffs do not depend in an ordered way upon which agent stops the game. We show how to deal with this non-ordered situation by introducing a new technique which may be of interest in its own right, and then apply it to the bond problem.

Predictable Forward Performance Processes: Infrequent Evaluation and Applications to Human-Machine Interactions

We study discrete-time predictable forward processes when trading times do not coincide with performance evaluation times in a binomial tree model for the financial market. The key step in the construction of these processes is to solve a linear functional equation of higher order associated with the inverse problem driving the evolution of the predictable forward process. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness and an explicit construction of the predictable forward process under these conditions. Furthermore, we find that these processes are inherently myopic in the sense that optimal strategies do not make use of future model parameters even if these are known. Finally, we argue that predictable forward preferences are a viable framework to model human-machine interactions occuring in automated trading or robo-advising. For both applications, we determine an optimal interaction schedule of a human agent interacting infrequently with a machine that is in charge of trading.

On the rate of convergence for an $\alpha$-stable central limit theorem under sublinear expectation

In this paper, we propose a monotone approximation scheme for a class of fully nonlinear degenerate partial integro-differential equations (PIDEs) which characterize the nonlinear $\alpha$-stable L\'{e}vy processes under sublinear expectation space with $\alpha \in(1,2)$. We further establish the error bounds for the monotone approximation scheme. This in turn yields an explicit Berry-Esseen bound and convergence rate for the $\alpha$-stable central limit theorem under sublinear expectation.

A game theoretical approach to homothetic robust forward investment performance processes in stochastic factor models

This paper studies an optimal forward investment problem in an incomplete market with model uncertainty, in which the underlying stocks depend on the correlated stochastic factors. The uncertainty stems from the probability measure chosen by an investor to evaluate the performance. We obtain directly the representation of the homothetic robust forward performance processes in factor-form by combining the zero-sum stochastic differential game and ergodic BSDE approach. We also establish the connections with the risk-sensitive zero-sum stochastic differential games over an infinite horizon with ergodic payoff criteria, as well as with the classical robust expected utilities for long time horizons. Finally, we give an example to illustrate that our approach can be applied to address a type of robust forward investment performance processes with negative realization processes.

Analysis of the optimal exercise boundary of American put options with delivery lags

A make-your-mind-up option is an American derivative with delivery lags. We show that its put option can be decomposed as a European put and a new type of American-style derivative. The latter is an option for which the investor receives the Greek Theta of the corresponding European option as the running payoff, and decides an optimal stopping time to terminate the contract. Based on this decomposition and using free boundary techniques, we show that the associated optimal exercise boundary exists and is a strictly increasing and smooth curve, and analyze the asymptotic behavior of the value function and the optimal exercise boundary for both large maturity and small time lag.
