A simple proof of Sullivan's complex bounds

About 35 years ago Dennis Sullivan proved a precompactness property ("complex bounds") for infinitely renormalizable real quadratic polynomials with bounded combinatorics. We present a simple "soft" proof of this remarkable result.

Polynomial-like dynamics of analytic maps

The theory of polynomial-like maps is of fundamental importance in holomorphic dynamics. We study dynamical properties of a larger class of maps. Our main result is that, under some natural conditions, a map of this class has a completely invariant compact set if and only if this set is the filled Julia set of a polynomial-like restriction of the map. We also generalize this result to include maps with non-connected domains of definition.

On invariant line fields of rational functions

Adopting the approach of [7] we study rational function carrying invariant line fields on the Julia set. In particular, we show that under certain weak conditions all possible measurable invariant line fields of a rational function on its Julia set are determined, in a precise sense, by a finite list of canonically defined holomorphic line fields.

On symmetries of the IFS attractor

We apply some methods and technique of complex dynamics to study the set of symmetries of attractors of holomorphic Iterated Function Systems (IFS), as well as relations between IFS sharing the same attractor.

On invariant measures of "satellite" infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials

Let f(z)=z^2+c be an infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomial and J_\infty be the intersection of forward orbits of "small" Julia sets of its simple renormalizations. We prove that if f admits an infinite sequence of satellite renormalizations, then every invariant measure of f: J_\infty\to J_\infty is supported on the postcritical set and has zero Lyapunov exponent. Coupled with [G. Levin, F. Przytycki, W. Shen, The Lyapunov exponent of holomorphic maps. Invent. Math. 205 (2016), 363-382], this implies that the Lyapunov exponent of such f at c is equal to zero, which answers partly a question posed by Weixiao Shen.

Maps with no a priori bounds

The modulus of a polynomial-like (PL) map is an important invariant that controls distortion of the straightening map and, hence, geometry of the corresponding PL Julia set. Lower bounds on the modulus, called complex a priori bounds, are known in a great variety of contexts. For any rational function we complement this by an upper bound for moduli of PL maps in the satellite case that depends only on the relative period and the degree of the PL map. This rules out a priori bounds in the satellite case with unbounded relative periods. We also apply our tools to obtain lower bounds for hyperbolic lengths of geodesics in the infinitely renormalizable case, and to show that moduli of annuli must converge to 0 for a sequence of arbitrary renormalizations, under several conditions all of which are shown to be necessary.

Rays to renormalizations

Let P be a non-linear polynomial, K_P the filled Julia set of P, f a renormalization of P and K_f the filled Julia set of f. We show, loosely speaking, that there is a finite-to-one function \lambda from the set of P-external rays having limit points in K_f onto the set of f-external rays to K_f such that R and \lambda(R) share the same limit set. In particular, if a point of the Julia set J_f=\partial K_f of a renormalization is accessible from C\setminus K_f then it is accessible through an external ray of P (the inverse is obvious). Another interesting corollary is that: a component of K_P\setminus K_f can meet K_f only at a single (pre-)periodic point. We study also a correspondence induced by \lambda on arguments of rays. These results are generalizations to all polynomials (covering notably the case of connected Julia set K_P) of some results of Levin-Przytycki, Blokh-Childers-Levin-Oversteegen-Schleicher and Petersen-Zakeri where the case is considered when K_P is disconnected and K_f is a periodic component of K_P.

Fixed points of the Ruelle-Thurston operator and the Cauchy transform

We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a function in a naturally appearing functional space to be a fixed point of the Ruelle-Thurston operator associated to a rational function, see Lemma 2.1. The proof uses essentially a recent [13]. As an immediate consequence, we revisit Theorem 1 and Lemma 5.2 of [11], see Theorem 1 and Lemma 2.2 below.

Transversality in the setting of hyperbolic and parabolic maps

In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in \cite{LSvS1} to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcations at parabolic periodic points are generic, or one has persistency of periodic orbits with a fixed multiplier.

Positive Transversality via transfer operators and holomorphic motions with applications to monotonicity for interval maps

In this paper we will develop a general approach which shows that generalized "critical relations" of families of locally defined holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally. The main idea is to define a transfer operator, which is a local analogue of the Thurston pullback operator, using holomorphic motions. Assuming a so-called lifting property is satisfied, we obtain information about the spectrum of this transfer operator and thus about transversality. An important new feature of our method is that it is not global: the maps we consider are only required to be defined and holomorphic on a neighbourhood of some finite set. We will illustrate this method by obtaining transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval and circle maps, for example for maps with flat critical points, but also for maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps. As in Tsujii's approach \cite{Tsu0,Tsu1}, for real maps we obtain {\em positive} transversality (where $>0$ holds instead of just $\ne 0$), and thus monotonicity of entropy for these families, and also (as an easy application) for the real quadratic family. This method additionally gives results for unimodal families of the form $x\mapsto |x|^\ell+c$ for $\ell>1$ not necessarily an even integer and $c$ real.

Limit Drift for Complex Feigenbaum Mappings

We study the dynamics of towers defined by fixed points of renormalization for Feigenbaum polynomials in the complex plane with varying order \ell of the critical point. It is known that the measure of the Julia set of the Feigenbaum polynomial is positive if and only if almost every point tends to 0 under the dynamics of the tower for corresponding \ell. That in turn depends on the sign of a quantity called the drift. We prove the existence and key properties of absolutely continuous invariant measures for tower dynamics as well as their convergence when \ell tends to infinity. We also prove the convergence of the drifts to a finite limit which can be expressed purely in terms of the limiting tower which corresponds to a Feigenbaum map with a flat critical point

Monotonicity of entropy and positively oriented transversality for families of interval maps

In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.

Perturbations of weakly expanding critical orbits

Let f be a polynomial or a rational function which has r summable critical points. We prove that there exists an r-dimensional manifold in an appropriate space containing f such that for every smooth curve in it through f, the ratio between parameter and dynamical derivatives along forward iterates of at least one these summable points tends to a non-zero number.
