Perturbations of weakly expanding critical orbits

Let f be a polynomial or a rational function which has r summable critical points. We prove that there exists an r-dimensional manifold in an appropriate space containing f such that for every smooth curve in it through f, the ratio between parameter and dynamical derivatives along forward iterates of at least one these summable points tends to a non-zero number.

Rigidity and non local connectivity of Julia sets of some quadratic polynomials

For an infinitely renormalizable quadratic map $f_c: z\mapsto z^2+c$ with the sequence of renormalization periods ${k_m}$ and rotation numbers ${t_m=p_m/q_m}, we prove that if $\limsup k_m^{-1}\log |p_m|>0$, then the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$. We prove also that if $\limsup |t_{m+1}|^{1/q_m}<1$ and $q_m\to \infty$, then the Julia set of $f_c$ is not locally connected and the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at $c$ provided that all the renormalizations are non-primitive (satellite). This quantifies a construction of A. Douady and J. Hubbard, and weakens a condition proposed by J. Milnor. Abstract of the Addendum: We improve one of the main results of the above paper.

Common Limits of Fibonacci Circle Maps

We show that limits for the critical exponent tending to \infty exist in both critical circle homeomorphisms of golden mean rotation number and Fibonacci circle coverings. Moreover, they are the same. The limit map is not analytic at the critical point, which is flat, but has non-trivial complex dynamics.

Multipliers of periodic orbits in spaces of rational maps

Given a polynomial or a rational map f we associate to it a space of maps. We introduce local coordinates in this space, which are essentially the set of critical values of the map. Then we consider an arbitrary periodic orbit of f with multiplier ρ\not=1 as a function of the local coordinates, and establish a simple connection between the dynamical plane of f and the function ρin the space associated to f. The proof is based on the theory of quasiconformal deformations of rational maps. As a corollary, we show that multipliers of non-repelling periodic orbits are also local coordinates in the space.

Measure of the Julia Set of the Feigenbaum map with infinite criticality

We consider fixed points of the Feigenbaum (periodic-doubling) operator whose orders tend to infinity. It is known that the hyperbolic dimension of their Julia sets go to 2. We prove that the Lebesgue measure of these Julia sets tend to zero. An important part of the proof consists in applying martingale theory to a stochastic process with non-integrable increments.

Multipliers of periodic orbits of quadratic polynomials and the parameter plane

We prove an extension results for the multiplier of an attracting periodic orbit of a quadratic map as a function of the parameter. This has applications to the problem of geometry of the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. In particular, we prove that the size of p/q-limb of a hyperbolic component of the Mandelbrot set of period n is O(4^n/p), and give an explicit condition on internal arguments under which the Julia set of corresponding (unique) infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomial is not locally connected

A Markov partition for the Feigenbaum dynamics

We build a Markov partition of the Feigenbaum dynamical plane, and a system of "external rays", which are invariant under rescaling. Applications to geometry of the Feigenbaum map are given.

Dynamics and Universality of Unimodal Mappings with Infinite Criticality

We consider infinitely renormalizable unimodal mappings with topological type which is periodic under renormalization. We study the limiting behavior of fixed points of the renormalization operator as the order of the critical point increases to infinity. It is shown that a limiting dynamics exists, with a critical point that is flat, but still having a well-behaved analytic continuation to a neighborhood of the real interval pinched at the critical point. We study the dynamics of limiting maps and prove their rigidity. In particular, the sequence of fixed points of renormalization for finite criticalities converges, uniformly on the real domain, to a mapping of the limiting type.

Local connectivity of the Julia set of real polynomials

One of the main questions in the field of complex dynamics is the question whether the Mandelbrot set is locally connected, and related to this, for which maps the Julia set is locally connected. In this paper we shall prove the following Main Theorem: Let $f$ be a polynomial of the form $f(z)=z^d +c$ with $d$ an even integer and $c$ real. Then the Julia set of $f$ is either totally disconnected or locally connected. In particular, the Julia set of $z^2+c$ is locally connected if $c \in [-2,1/4]$ and totally disconnected otherwise.
