Lipschitz Metrics for a Class of Nonlinear Wave Equations

The nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u)(c(u)u_x)_x=0$ determines a flow of conservative solutions taking values in the space $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. However, this flow is not continuous w.r.t. the natural $H^1$ distance. Aim of this paper is to construct a new metric which renders the flow uniformly Lipschitz continuous on bounded subsets of $H^1(\mathbb{R})$. For this purpose, $H^1$ is given the structure of a Finsler manifold, where the norm of tangent vectors is defined in terms of an optimal transportation problem. For paths of piecewise smooth solutions, one can carefully estimate how the weighted length grows in time. By the generic regularity result proved in [7], these piecewise regular paths are dense and can be used to construct a geodesic distance with the desired Lipschitz property.

Generic Regularity of Conservative Solutions to a Nonlinear Wave Equation

The paper is concerned with conservative solutions to the nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt} - c(u)\big(c(u) u_x\big)_x = 0$. For an open dense set of $C^3$ initial data, we prove that the solution is piecewise smooth in the $t$-$x$ plane, while the gradient $u_x$ can blow up along finitely many characteristic curves. The analysis is based on a variable transformation introduced in [7], which reduces the equation to a semilinear system with smooth coefficients, followed by an application of Thom's transversality theorem.

No BV bounds for approximate solutions to p-system with general pressure law

For the p-system with large BV initial data, an assumption introduced in [3] by Bakhvalov guarantees the global existence of entropy weak solutions with uniformly bounded total variation. The present paper provides a partial converse to this result. Whenever Bakhvalov's condition does not hold, we show that there exist front tracking approximate solutions, with uniformly positive density, whose total variation becomes arbitrarily large. The construction extends the arguments in [4] to a general class of pressure laws.

Unique Conservative Solutions to a Variational Wave Equation

Relying on the analysis of characteristics, we prove the uniqueness of conservative solutions to the variational wave equation $u_{tt}-c(u) (c(u)u_x)_x=0$. Given a solution $u(t,x)$, even if the wave speed $c(u)$ is only Hölder continuous in the $t$-$x$ plane, one can still define forward and backward characteristics in a unique way. Using a new set of independent variables $X,Y$, constant along characteristics, we prove that $t,x,u$, together with other variables, satisfy a semilinear system with smooth coefficients. From the uniqueness of the solution to this semilinear system, one obtains the uniqueness of conservative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with general initial data $u(0,\cdot)\in H^1(\mathbb{R})$, $u_t(0,\cdot)\in L^2(\mathbb{R})$.

Lower bound of density for Lipschitz continuous solutions in the isentropic gas dynamics

For the Euler equations of isentropic gas dynamics in one space dimension, also knowns as p-system in Lagrangian coordinate, it is known that the density can be arbitrarily close to zero as time goes to infinity, even when initial density is uniformly away from zero. In this paper, for uniform positive initial density, we prove the density in any Lipschitz continuous solutions for Cauchy problem has a sharp positive lower bound in the order of O(1/(1+t)), which is identified by explicit examples in [9](Courant and Friedrichs, Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, 1948.).

Uniqueness of Conservative Solutions to the Camassa-Holm Equation via Characteristics

The paper provides a direct proof the uniqueness of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation, based on characteristics. Given a conservative solution $u=u(t,x)$, an equation is introduced which singles out a unique characteristic curve through each initial point. By studying the evolution of the quantities $u$ and $v= 2\arctan u_x$ along each characteristic, it is proved that the Cauchy problem with general initial data $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R})$ has a unique solution, globally in time.

Finite time singularities for hyperbolic systems

In this paper, we study the formation of finite time singularities in the form of super norm blowup for a spatially inhomogeneous hyperbolic system. The system is related to the variational wave equations as those in [18]. The system posses a unique $C^1$ solution before the emergence of vacuum in finite time, for given initial data that are smooth enough, bounded and uniformly away from vacuum. At the occurrence of blowup, the density becomes zero, while the momentum stays finite, however the velocity and the energy are both infinity.

Lack of BV Bounds for Approximate Solutions to the p-system with Large Data

We consider front tracking approximate solutions to the p-system of isentropic gas dynamics. At interaction times, the outgoing wave fronts have the same strength as in the exact solution of the Riemann problem, but some error is allowed in their speed. For large BV initial data, we construct examples showing that the total variation of these approximate solutions can become arbitrarily large, or even blow up in finite time. This happens even if the density of the gas remains uniformly positive.

Experimental test of the tradeoff relation in weak measurement

An upper bound between the information gain and state reversibility of weak measurement was first developed by Y. K. Cheong and S. W. Lee [Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 150402 (2012)]. Their results are valid for arbitrary d-level quantum systems. In light of the commonly used qubit system in quantum information, a sharp tradeoff relation can be obtained. In this letter, this tradeoff relation is experimentally verified with polarization encoded single photons from a quantum dot. Furthermore, a complete traversal of weak measurement operators is realized, and the mapping to the least upper bound of this tradeoff relation is obtained. Our results complement the theoretical work and provide a universal ruler for the characterization of weak measurements.

Singularity and existence to a wave system of nematic liquid crystals

In this paper, we prove the global existence and singularity formation for a wave system from modelling nematic liquid crystals in one space dimension. In our model, although the viscous damping term is included, the solution with smooth initial data still has gradient blowup in general, even when the initial energy is arbitrarily small.

Shock formation in the compressible Euler equations and related systems

We prove shock formation results for the compressible Euler equations and related systems of conservation laws in one space dimension, or three dimensions with spherical symmetry. We establish an $L^\infty$ bound for $C^1$ solutions of the one-D Euler equations, and use this to improve recent shock formation results of the authors. We prove analogous shock formation results for one-D MHD with orthogonal magnetic field, and for compressible flow in a variable area duct, which has as a special case spherically symmetric three dimensional flow on the exterior of a ball

Shock-free Solutions of the Compressible Euler Equations

We study the structure of shock-free solutions of the compressible Euler equations with large data. We describe conditions under which the Rarefactive/Compressive character of solutions changes, and conditions under which the vacuum is formed asymptotically. We present several new examples of shock-free solutions, which demonstrate a large variety of behaviors.

TVD Fields and Isentropic Gas Flow

Little is known about global existence of large-variation solutions to Cauchy problems for systems of conservation laws in one space dimension. Besides results for $L^\infty$ data via compensated compactness, the existence of global BV solutions for arbitrary BV data remains an outstanding open problem. In particular, it is not known if isentropic gas dynamics admits an a priori variation bound which applies to all BV data. In a few cases such results are available: scalar equations, Temple class systems, $2\times 2$-systems satisfying Bakhvalov's condition, and, in particular, isothermal gas dynamics. In each of these cases the equations admit a TVD (Total Variation Diminishing) field: a scalar function defined on state space whose spatial variation along entropic solutions does not increase in time. In this paper we consider strictly hyperbolic $2\times 2$-systems and derive a representation result for scalar fields that are TVD across all pairwise wave interactions, when the latter are resolved as in the Glimm scheme. We then use this to show that isentropic gas dynamics with a $γ$-law pressure function does not admit any nontrivial TVD field of this type.

The Vacuum in Nonisentropic Gas Dynamics

We investigate the vacuum in nonisentropic gas dynamics in one space variable, with the most general equation of states allowed by thermodynamics. We recall physical constraints on the equations of state and give explicit and easily checkable conditions under which vacuums occur in the solution of the Riemann problem. We then present a class of models for which the Riemann problem admits unique global solutions without vacuums.

Smooth solutions and singularity formation for the inhomogeneous nonlinear wave equation

We study the nonlinear inhomogeneous wave equation in one space dimension: $v_{tt} - T(v,x)_{xx} = 0$. By constructing some "decoupled" Riccati type equations for smooth solutions, we provide a singularity formation result without restrictions on the total variation of unknown, which generalize earlier singularity results of Lax and the first author. These results are applied to several one-dimensional hyperbolic models, such as compressible Euler flows with a general pressure law, elasticity in an inhomogeneous medium, transverse MHD flow, and compressible flow in a variable area duct.

Formation of singularity and smooth wave propagation for the non-isentropic compressible Euler equations

We define compressive and rarefactive waves and give the differential equations describing smooth wave steepening for the compressible Euler equations with a varying entropy profile and general pressure laws. Using these differential equations, we directly generalize P. Lax's singularity (shock) formation results for hyperbolic systems with two variables to the compressible Euler equations for a polytropic ideal gas. Our results are valid globally without restriction on the size of the variation of initial data.
