Scalar field evolution at background and perturbation levels for a broad class of potentials

In this paper, we investigate a non-interacting scalar field cosmology with an arbitrary potential using the $f$-deviser method that relies on the differentiability properties of the potential. Using this alternative mathematical approach, we present a unified dynamical system analysis at a scalar field's background and perturbation levels with arbitrary potentials. For illustration, we consider a monomial and double exponential potential. These two classes of potentials comprise the asymptotic behaviour of several classes of scalar field potentials, and, therefore, they provide the skeleton for the typical behaviour of arbitrary potentials. Moreover, we analyse the linear cosmological perturbations in the matterless case by considering three scalar perturbations: the evolution of the Bardeen potentials, the comoving curvature perturbation, the so-called Sasaki-Mukhanov variable, or the scalar field perturbation in uniform curvature gauge. Finally, an exhaustive dynamical system analysis for each scalar perturbation is presented, including the evolution of Bardeen potentials in the presence of matter.

Inflation Driven by Non-Linear Electrodynamics

We investigate the inflation driven by a nonlinear electromagnetic field based on an NLED lagrangian density ${\cal L}_{\text{nled}} = - {F} f \left( {F} \right)$, where $f \left( {F}\right)$ is a general function depending on ${F}$. We first formulate an $f$-NLED cosmological model with a more general function $f \left( {F}\right)$ and show that all NLED models can be expressed in this framework; then, we investigate in detail two interesting examples of the function $f \left( {F}\right)$. We present our phenomenological model based on a new Lagrangian for NLED. Solutions to the field equations with the physical properties of the cosmological parameters are obtained. We show that the early Universe had no Big-Bang singularity, which accelerated in the past. We also investigate the qualitative implications of NLED by studying the inflationary parameters, like the slow-roll parameters, spectral index $n_s$, and tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, and compare our results with observational data. Detailed phase-space analysis of our NLED cosmological model is performed with and without matter source. As a first approach, we consider the motion of a particle of unit mass in an effective potential. Our systems correspond to fast-slow systems for physical values of the electromagnetic field and the energy densities at the end of inflation. We analyze a complementary system using Hubble-normalized variables to investigate the cosmological evolution before the matter-dominated Universe.

Exact solutions and cosmological constraints in fractional cosmology

This paper investigates exact solutions of cosmological interest in fractional cosmology. Given $μ$, the order of Caputo's fractional derivative, and $w$, the matter equation of state, we present specific exact power-law solutions. We discuss the exact general solution of the Riccati Equation, where the solution for the scale factor is a combination of power laws. Using cosmological data, we estimate the free parameters. An analysis of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) data and the observational Hubble parameter data (OHD), also known as cosmic chronometers, and a joint analysis with data from SNe Ia + OHD leads to best-fit values for the free parameters calculated at $1σ$, $2σ$ and $3σ$ confidence levels (CLs). On the other hand, these best-fit values are used to calculate the age of the Universe, the current deceleration parameter (both at $3σ$ CL) and the current matter density parameter at $1σ$ CL. Finding a Universe roughly twice as old as the one of $Λ$CDM is a distinction of fractional cosmology. Focusing our analysis on these results, we can conclude that the region in which $μ>2$ is not ruled out by observations. This parameter region is relevant because fractional cosmology gives a power-law solution without matter, which is accelerated for $μ>2$. We present a fractional origin model that leads to an accelerated state without appealing to $Λ$ or dark energy.

Cosmology under the fractional calculus approach: a possible $H_0$ tension resolution?

Recently, a new field of study called fractional cosmology has emerged. It uses fractional calculus to modify the standard derivative equations and change the Friedmann equations. The evolution of cosmic species densities is also affected by the $μ$ fractional parameter and the age of the Universe $t_0$. This new approach to cosmology modifies the Friedmann equations and allows for a late cosmic acceleration without the need for a dark energy component. This could be a breakthrough in solving longstanding problems in cosmology. By analyzing observational Hubble data and Type Ia supernovae, we have been able to place strict constraints on the fractional and cosmological parameters. Our results suggest that the Universe may be older than previously estimated. We also explore whether fractional cosmology can help resolve the $H_0$ tension.

Global dynamics in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet scalar field cosmology with matter

We study the dynamics of the field equations in a four-dimensional isotropic and homogeneous spatially flat Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker geometry in the context of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a matter source and a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet scalar. In this theory, the Gauss-Bonnet term contributes to the field equations. The mass of the scalar field depends on the potential function and the Gauss-Bonnet term. For the scalar field potential, we consider the exponential function and the coupling function between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet scalar is considered to be the linear function. Moreover, the scalar field can have a phantom behaviour. We consider a set of dimensionless variables and write the field equations into a system or algebraic-differential equations. For the latter, we investigate the equilibrium points and their stability properties. In order to perform a global analysis of the asymptotic dynamics, we use compactified variables. This gravitational theory can explain the Universe's recent and past acceleration phases. Therefore, it can be used as a toy model for studying inflation or as a dark energy candidate.

Phase-space analysis of an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet scalar field cosmology

We perform a detailed study of the phase-space of the field equations of an Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet scalar field cosmology for a spatially flat Friedmann--Lema\^ıtre--Robertson--Walker spacetime. For the scalar field potential, we consider the exponential function. In contrast, for the coupling function of the scalar field with the Gauss-Bonnet term, we assume two cases, the exponential function and the power-law function. We write the field equations in dimensionless variables and study the equilibrium points using Poincare variables. For the exponential coupling function, the asymptotic solutions describe de Sitter universes or spacetimes where the Gauss-Bonnet term dominates. We recovered previous results but found new asymptotic solutions not previously studied. For the power-law coupling function, equilibrium points which describe the scaling solution appear. Finally, the power-law coupling provides a rich cosmological phenomenology.

Revisiting Fractional Cosmology

Recently, the research community has been exploring fractional calculus to address problems related to cosmology; in this approach, the gravitational action integral is altered, leading to a modified Friedmann equation, then the resulting theory is compared against observational data. In this context, dynamical systems can be used along with an analysis the phase spaces for different values of the fractional order of the derivative and their different matter contents. The equilibrium points are classified, providing a range for the order of the fractional derivative in order to investigate whether the cosmological history can be reconstructed and a late-time accelerating power-law solution obtained for the scale factor. In this paper, we discuss the physical interpretation of the corresponding cosmological solutions with particular emphasis on the influence of the fractional order of the derivative in a theory of gravity that includes a scalar field minimally coupled to gravity. The presented results improve and extend those obtained previously, further demonstrating that fractional calculus can play a relevant role in cosmology.

Phase space analysis of the bouncing universe with stringy effects

We use the recently modified Friedmann equations obtained from string T-duality effects that encode the zero-point length (Phys. Lett. B 836 (2023), 137621) to study the phase space analyses of a bouncing early universe. An important implication of such stringy effects is that they can alleviate the initial singularity since the Raychaudhuri equation is modified. We investigate if the Universe can undergo an accelerated expansion phase for a specific domain of the equation of state parameter. The stringy effects are encoded in the parameter $Γ$, which depends not only on the zero-point length but also on the state parameter $ω$. We construct two dynamical systems depending on whether $-1 < ω\leq -1/3$ and $ω\geq -1/3$, and we classify the equilibrium points of each system. Exact solutions and cosmological implications are discussed.

Multiscalar-torsion Cosmology: Exact and Analytic Solutions from Noether Symmetries

The Noether symmetry analysis is applied in a multi-scalar field cosmological model in teleparallel gravity. In particular, we consider two scalar fields with interaction in scalar-torsion theory. The field equations have a minisuperspace description, and the evolution of the physical variables depends on the potential function that drives the scalar fields' dynamics. With the requirement for the field equations to admit non-trivial Noether point symmetries and the use of the first theorem of Noether, we constraint all the functional forms for the potential. Finally, we apply symmetry vectors and the corresponding conservation laws to determine exact and analytic solutions in multiscalar-torsion cosmology.

Scalar Field cosmology from a Modified Poisson Algebra

We investigate the phase space of a scalar field theory obtained by minisuperspace deformation. We consider quintessence or phantom scalar fields in the action which arise from minisuperspace deformation on the Einstein-Hilbert action. We use a modified Poisson Algebra where Poisson brackets are the $α$-deformed ones and are related to the Moyal-Weyl star product. We discuss early and late-time attractors, and we reconstruct the cosmological evolution. We show that the model can have $Λ$CDM model as a future attractor if we initially consider a massless scalar field without a cosmological constant term.

The dynamics of scalar-field Quintom cosmological models

We shall present a complete (compactified) dynamical systems analysis of the Quintom model comprised of an interacting quintessence scalar field and a phantom. We find a range for the model parameters $κ, λ$ such that there are expanding Quintom cosmologies that undergo two inflationary periods, and this behaviour is not destabilized by spatial curvature. We also discuss a class of bouncing cosmologies. Finally, the linear cosmological perturbations are studied.

Cosmology under the fractional calculus approach

Fractional cosmology modifies the standard derivative to Caputo's fractional derivative of order $μ$, generating changes in General Relativity. Friedmann equations are modified, and the evolution of the species densities depends on $μ$ and the age of the Universe $t_U$. We estimate stringent constraints on $μ$ using cosmic chronometers, Type Ia supernovae, and joint analysis. We obtain $μ=2.839^{+0.117}_{-0.193}$ within the $1σ$ confidence level providing a non-standard cosmic acceleration at late times; consequently, the Universe would be older than the standard estimations. Additionally, we present a stability analysis for different $μ$ values. This analysis identifies a late-time attractor corresponding to a power-law decelerated solution for $μ< 2$. Moreover, a non-relativistic critical point exists for $μ> 1$ and a sink for $μ> 2$. This solution is a decelerated power-law if $1 < μ< 2$ and an accelerated power-law solution if $μ> 2$, consistent with the mean values obtained from the observational analysis. Therefore, for both flat FLRW and Bianchi I metrics, the modified Friedmann equations provide a late cosmic acceleration under this paradigm without introducing a dark energy component. This approach could be a new path to tackling unsolved cosmological problems.

$f(T,B)$ gravity in a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe with nonzero spatial curvature

We investigate exact solutions and the asymptotic dynamics for the Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker universe with nonzero spatial curvature in the fourth-order modified teleparallel gravitational theory known as $f\left( T, B\right) $ theory. We show that the field equations admit a minisuperspace description, and they can reproduce any exact form of the scale factor. Moreover, we calculate the equilibrium points and analyze their stability. We show that Milne and Milne-like solutions are supported, and the de Sitter universe is provided. To complete our analysis, we use Poincaré variables to investigate the dynamics at infinity.

Can $f(R)$ gravity isotropize a pre-bounce contracting universe?

We address the important issue of isotropisation of a pre-bounce contracting phase in $f(R)$ gravity, which would be relevant to construct any viable nonsingular bouncing scenario in $f(R)$ gravity. The main motivation behind this work is to investigate whether the $f(R)$ gravity, by itself, can isotropise a contracting universe starting initially with small anisotropy without incorporating a super-stiff or non-ideal fluid, that is impossible in general relativity. Considering Bianchi I cosmology and employing a dynamical system analysis, we see that this is not possible for $R^n$ ($n>1$) and $R+αR^2$ ($α>0$) theory, but possible for $\frac{1}αe^{αR}$ ($α>0$) theory. On the other hand, if one does not specify an $f(R)$ theory a priori but demands a cosmology smoothly connecting an ekpyrotic contraction phase to a nonsingular bounce, the ekpyrotic phase \emph{may} not fulfil the condition for isotropisation and physically viability simultaneously.

Anisotropic spacetimes in $f(T,B)$ theory II: Kantowski-Sachs Universe

In the context of the modified teleparallel $f(T, B)$-theory of gravity, we consider a homogeneous and anisotropic background geometry described by the Kantowski-Sachs line element. We derive the field equations and investigate the existence of exact solutions. Furthermore, the evolution of the trajectories for the field equations is studied by deriving the stationary points at the finite and infinite regimes. For the $f(T,B)=T+F\left( B\right) $ theory, we prove that for a specific limit of the function $F\left( B\right) $, the anisotropic Universe has the expanding and isotropic Universe as an attractor with zero spatial curvature. We remark that there are no future attractors where the asymptotic solution describes a Universe with nonzero spatial curvature.

Anisotropic spacetimes in $f(T,B)$ theory III: LRS Bianchi III Universe

We study the asymptotic dynamics of $f(T, B)$-theory in an anisotropic Bianchi III background geometry. We show that an attractor always exists for the field equations, which depends on a free parameter provided by the specific $f(T, B)$ functional form. The attractor is an accelerated spatially flat FLRW or non-accelerated LRS Bianchi III geometry. Consequently, the $f(T, B)$-theory provides a spatially flat and isotropic accelerated Universe.

Symmetries and conservation laws for the generalized $n$-dimensional Ermakov system

We revise recent results on the classification of the generalized three-dimensional Hamiltonian Ermakov system. We show that a statement published recently is incorrect, while the solution for the classification problem was incomplete. We present the correct classification for the three-dimensional system by using results which related the background space with the dynamics. Finally, we extend our results for the generalized $n$% -dimensional Hamiltonian Ermakov system.

Hyperbolic inflationary model with nonzero curvature

We consider a cosmological model consisting of two scalar fields defined in the hyperbolic plane known as hyperbolic inflation. For the background space, we consider a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime with nonzero curvature. We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions and we search for attractors in the expanding regime. We prove that two hyperbolic inflationary stages are stable solutions that can solve the flatness problem and describe acceleration for both open and closed models, and additionally we obtain a Milne-like attractor solution for the open model. We also investigate the contracting branch obtaining mirror solutions with the opposite dynamical behaviours.
