Cosmological solutions in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

We perform a detailed study on the integrability of the Hoř% ava-Lifshitz scalar field cosmology in a Friedmann--Lema\^ı% tre--Robertson--Walker background spacetime. The approach we follow to determine the integrability is that of the Singularity Analysis. More specifically, we test if the gravitational field equations possesses the Painlevé property. For the exponential potential of the scalar field we are able to perform an analytic explicit integration of the field equations and write the solution in terms of Laurent expansion and more specifically write the solution in terms of Right Painlevé series.

Cosmological Evolution of Two-Scalar fields Cosmology in the Jordan frame

In the present article we study the cosmological evolution of a two-scalar field gravitational theory defined in the Jordan frame. Specifically, we assume one of the scalar fields to be minimally coupled to gravity, while the second field which is the Brans-Dicke scalar field is nonminimally coupled to gravity and also coupled to the other scalar field. In the Einstein frame this theory reduces to a two-scalar field theory where the two fields can interact only in the potential term, which means that the quintom theory is recovered. The cosmological evolution is studied by analyzing the equilibrium points of the field equations in the Jordan frame. We find that the theory can describe the cosmological evolution in large scales, while inflationary solutions are also provided.

Static Spherically Symmetric Einstein-aether models I: Perfect fluids with a linear equation of state and scalar fields with an exponential self-interacting potential

We investigate the field equations in the Einstein-aether theory for static spherically symmetric spacetimes and a perfect fluid source and subsequently with the addition of a scalar field (with an exponential self-interacting potential). We introduce more appropriate dynamical variables that facilitate the study of the equilibrium points of the resulting dynamical system and, in addition, we discuss the dynamics at infinity. We study the qualitative properties of the models with a particular interest in their asymptotic behaviour and whether they admit singularities. We also present a number of new solutions.

Static Spherically Symmetric Einstein-aether models II: Integrability and the Modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff approach

We investigate the existence of analytic solutions for the field equations in the Einstein-æther theory for a static spherically symmetric spacetime and provide a detailed dynamical system analysis of the field equations. In particular, we investigate if the gravitational field equations in the Einstein-æther model in the static spherically symmetric spacetime possesses the Painlevè property, so that an analytic explicit integration can be performed. We find that analytic solutions can be presented in terms of Laurent expansion only when the matter source consists of a perfect fluid with linear equation of state (EoS) $μ=μ_{0}+\left( \texttt{h} -1\right) p,~\texttt{h} >1$. In order to study the field equations we apply the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) approach and other approaches. We find that the relativistic TOV equations are drastically modified in Einstein-æther theory, and we explore the physical implications of this modification. We study perfect fluid models with a scalar field with an exponential potential. We discuss all of the equilibrium points and discuss their physical properties.

Extended phase-space analysis of the Horava-Lifshitz cosmology

We examine the phase space of Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology for a wide range of self-interacting potentials for the scalar field under the detailed-balance condition and without imposing it, by means of the powerful method of $f$-devisers. A compactification approach is performed for the exponential potential and for potentials beyond the exponential one, extending the previous findings in the literature. By using this approach it is possible to describe the finite region of the phase space and the region where the phase-space variables becomes infinity. Furthermore, we present several results concerning the stability of the \emph{de Sitter} solution in Hořava-Lifshitz cosmology using Center Manifold theory. The advantages of this procedure are unveiled immediately when it is compared with the Normal Forms Calculations presented before in the literature.

Exact Solutions in Chiral Cosmology

In multi-scalar field cosmologies new dynamical degrees of freedom are introduced which can explain the observational phenomena. Unlike the usual scalar field theory where a single scalar field is considered, the multi-scalar field cosmologies allow more than one scalar field and exhibits interetsing consequences, such as quintom, hybrid inflation etc. The current work studies the existence of exact solutions and integrable dynamical systems in multi-scalar field cosmology. We present the exact analytic solutions for a system of $N$-scalar fields. In particular, we consider a multi scalar field cosmological scenario comprised of $N$-scalar fields that are minimally coupled to the Einstein gravity. The geometry of the universe is described by the spatially flat homogeneous and isotropic line element and the scalar fields may interact in their kinetic or/and potential terms. Within this set up, we show that for a specific geometry in the kinetic part of the scalar fields and specific potential form, the gravitational field equations for the class of $N$-scalar field models can be exactly solved. More specifically, we show that the Einstein field equations in $N$-scalar field cosmology can be reduced to that of a $\left( N+1\right) $ linear system.

Dynamical system analysis at background and perturbation levels: Quintessence in severe disadvantage comparing to $Λ$CDM

We perform for the first time a dynamical system analysis of both the background and perturbation equations, of $Λ$CDM cosmology and quintessence scenario with an exponential potential. In the former case the perturbations do not change the stability of the late-time attractor of the background equations, and the system still results in the dark-energy dominated, de Sitter solution, having passed from the correct dark-matter era with $γ\approx6/11$. However, in the case of quintessence the incorporation of perturbations changes the stability and properties of the background evolution, and the only conditionally stable points present either an exponentially increasing matter clustering not favored by observations, or Laplacian instabilities, and thus not physically interesting. This result is a severe disadvantage of quintessence cosmology comparing to $Λ$CDM paradigm.

The past and future dynamics of quintom dark energy models

We study the phase space of the quintom cosmologies for a class of exponential potentials. We combine normal forms expansions and the center manifold theory in order to describe the dynamics near equilibrium sets. Furthermore, we construct the unstable and center manifold of the massless scalar field cosmology motivated by the numerical results given in Lazkoz and Leon (Phys Lett B 638:303. arXiv:astro-ph/0602590, 2006). We study the role of the curvature on the dynamics. Several monotonic functions are defined on relevant invariant sets for the quintom cosmology. Finally, conservation laws of the cosmological field equations and algebraic solutions are determined by using the symmetry analysis and the singularity analysis.

Dynamical systems analysis of the cubic galileon beyond the exponential potential and the cosmological analogue of the vDVZ discontinuity

In this paper we generalize the dynamical systems analysis of the cubic galileon model previously investigated in \cite{rtgui} by including self-interaction potentials beyond the exponential one. It will be shown that, consistently with the results of \cite{rtgui}, the cubic self-interaction of the galileon vacuum appreciably modifies the late-time cosmic dynamics by the existence of a phantom-like attractor (among other super-accelerated solutions that are not of interest in the present investigation). In contrast, in the presence of background matter the late-time cosmic dynamics remains practically the same as in the standard quintessence scenario. This means that we can not recover the cubic galileon vacuum continuously from the more general cubic quintessence with background matter, by setting to zero the matter energy density (and the pressure). This happens to be a kind of cosmological vDVZ discontinuity that can be evaded by means of the cosmological version of the Vainshtein screening mechanism.

Falsifying cosmological models based on a non-linear electrodynamics

Recently, the nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) has been gaining attention to generate primordial magnetic fields in the Universe and also to resolve singularity problems. Moreover, recent works have shown the crucial role of the NED on the inflation. This paper provides a new approach based on a new model of NED as a source of gravitation to remove the cosmic singularity at the big bang and explain the cosmic acceleration during the inflation era on the background of stochastic magnetic field. Also, we found a realization of a cyclic Universe, free of initial singularity, due to the proposed NED energy density. In addition, we explore whether a NED field without or with matter can be the origin of the late-time acceleration. For this we obtain explicit equations for $H(z)$ and perform a MCMC analysis to constrain the NED parameters by using $31$ observational Hubble data (OHD) obtained from cosmic chronometers covering the redshift range $0 < z < 1.97$; and with the joint-light-analysis (JLA) SNIa compilation consisting in $740$ data points in the range $0.01<z<1.2$. All our constraints on the current magnetic field give $B_{0}\sim 10^{-31}\mathrm{cm^{-1}}$, which are larger than the upper limit $10^{-33}\mathrm{cm^{-1}}$ by the Planck satellite implying that NED cosmologies could not be suitable to explain the Universe late-time dynamics. However, the current data is able to falsify the scenario at late times. Indeed, one is able to reconstruct the deceleration parameter $q(z)$ using the best fit values of the parameters obtained from OHD and SNIa data sets. If the matter component is not included, the data sets predict an accelerated phase in the early Universe, but a non accelerated Universe is preferred in the current epoch...

Non-minimally coupled scalar field cosmology with torsion

In this work we present a generalized Brans-Dicke lagrangian including a non-minimally coupled Gauss-Bonnet term without imposing the vanishing torsion condition. In the resulting field equations, the torsion is closely related to the dynamics of the scalar field, i.e., if non-minimally coupled terms are present in the theory, then the torsion must be present. For the studied lagrangian we analyze the cosmological consequences of an effective torsional fluid and we show that this fluid can be responsible for the current acceleration of the universe. Finally, we perform a detailed dynamical system analysis to describe the qualitative features of the model, we find that accelerated stages are a generic feature of this scenario.

Dynamical Analysis of an Integrable Cubic Galileon Cosmological Model

Recently a cubic Galileon cosmological model was derived by the assumption that the field equations are invariant under the action of point transformations. The cubic Galileon model admits a second conservation law which means that the field equations form an integrable system. The analysis of the critical points for this integrable model is the main subject of this work. To perform the analysis, we work on dimensionless variables different from that of the Hubble normalization. New critical points are derived while the gravitational effects which follow from the cubic term are studied.

Global structure of static spherically symmetric solutions surrounded by quintessence

We investigate all static spherically symmetric solutions in the context of general relativity surrounded by a minimally-coupled quintessence field, using dynamical system analysis. Applying the 1+1+2 formalism and introducing suitable normalized variables involving the Gaussian curvature, we were able to reformulate the field equations as first order differential equations. In the case of a massless canonical scalar field we recovered all known black hole results, such as the Fisher solution, and we found that apart from the Schwarzschild solution all other solutions are naked singularities. Additionally, we identified the symmetric phase space which corresponds to the white hole part of the solution and in the case of a phantom field, we were able to extract the conditions for the existence of wormholes and define all possible class of solutions such as Cold Black holes, singular spacetimes and wormholes like Ellis wormhole, for example. For an exponential potential, we found that the black hole solution which is asymptotically flat is unique and it is the Schwarzschild spacetime, while all other solutions are naked singularities. Furthermore, we found solutions connecting to a white hole through a maximum radius, and not a minimum radius (throat) such as wormhole solutions, therefore violating the flare-out condition. Finally, we have found a necessary and sufficient condition on the form of the potential to have an asymptotically AdS spacetime along with a necessary condition for the existence of asymptotically flat black holes.

Noether symmetries and stability of ideal gas solution in Galileon Cosmology

A class of generalized Galileon cosmological models, which can be described by a point-like Lagrangian, is considered in order to utilize Noether's Theorem to determine conservation laws for the field equations. In the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe, the existence of a nontrivial conservation law indicates the integrability of the field equations. Due to the complexity of the latter, we apply the differential invariants approach in order to construct special power-law solutions and study their stability.

Kantowski-Sachs Einstein-æther perfect fluid models

We investigate Kantowski-Sachs models in Einstein-æther theory with a perfect fluid source using the singularity analysis to prove the integrability of the field equations and dynamical system tools to study the evolution. We find an inflationary source at early times, and an inflationary sink at late times, for a wide region in the parameter space. The results by A. A. Coley, G. Leon, P. Sandin and J. Latta (JCAP 12, 010, 2015), are then re-obtained as particular cases. Additionally, we select other values for the non-GR parameters which are consistent with current constraints, getting a very rich phenomenology. In particular, we find solutions with infinite shear, zero curvature, and infinite matter energy density in comparison with the Hubble scalar. We also have stiff-like future attractors, anisotropic late-time attractors, or both, in some special cases. Such results are developed analytically, and then verified by numerics. Finally, the physical interpretation of the new critical points is discussed.

Intermediate accelerated solutions as generic late-time attractors in a modified Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory

We investigate a Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD) scalar field, $Φ$, with power-law potential in the presence of a second scalar field, $ϕ$, with an exponential potential, in both the Jordan and the Einstein frames. We present the relation of our model with the induced gravity model with power-law potential and the integrability of this kind of models is discussed when the quintessence field $ϕ$ is massless, and has a small velocity. We prove that in JBD theory, the de Sitter solution is not a natural attractor but an intermediate accelerated solution of the form $a(t)\simeq e^{α_1 t^{p_1}}$, as $t\rightarrow \infty$ where $α_1>0$ and $0 0$ and $0<p_2<1$, for the same conditions on the parameters as in the Jordan frame. In the special case of a quadratic potential in the Jordan frame, or for a constant potential in the Einstein's frame, these solutions are of saddle type. Finally, we present a specific elaboration of our extension of the induced gravity model in the Jordan frame, which corresponds to a linear potential of $Φ$. The dynamical system is then reduced to a two dimensional one, and the late-time attractor is linked with the exact solution found for the induced gravity model. In this example the intermediate accelerated solution does not exist, and the attractor solution has an asymptotic de Sitter-like evolution law for the scale factor. Apart from some fine-tuned examples such as the linear, and quadratic potential ${U}(Φ)$ in the Jordan frame, it is true that intermediate accelerated solutions are generic late-time attractors in a modified JBD theory.

Spherically symmetric Einstein-aether perfect fluid models

We investigate spherically symmetric cosmological models in Einstein-aether theory with a tilted (non-comoving) perfect fluid source. We use a 1+3 frame formalism and adopt the comoving aether gauge to derive the evolution equations, which form a well-posed system of first order partial differential equations in two variables. We then introduce normalized variables. The formalism is particularly well-suited for numerical computations and the study of the qualitative properties of the models, which are also solutions of Horava gravity. We study the local stability of the equilibrium points of the resulting dynamical system corresponding to physically realistic inhomogeneous cosmological models and astrophysical objects with values for the parameters which are consistent with current constraints. In particular, we consider dust models in ($β-$) normalized variables and derive a reduced (closed) evolution system and we obtain the general evolution equations for the spatially homogeneous Kantowski-Sachs models using appropriate bounded normalized variables. We then analyse these models, with special emphasis on the future asymptotic behaviour for different values of the parameters. Finally, we investigate static models for a mixture of a (necessarily non-tilted) perfect fluid with a barotropic equations of state and a scalar field.

Cosmology in time asymmetric extensions of general relativity

We investigate the cosmological behavior in a universe governed by time asymmetric extensions of general relativity, which is a novel modified gravity based on the addition of new, time-asymmetric, terms on the Hamiltonian framework, in a way that the algebra of constraints and local physics remain unchanged. Nevertheless, at cosmological scales these new terms can have significant effects that can alter the universe evolution, both at early and late times, and the freedom in the choice of the involved modification function makes the scenario able to produce a huge class of cosmological behaviors. For basic ansatzes of modification, we perform a detailed dynamical analysis, extracting the stable late-time solutions. Amongst others, we find that the universe can result in dark-energy dominated, accelerating solutions, even in the absence of an explicit cosmological constant, in which the dark energy can be quintessence-like, phantom-like, or behave as an effective cosmological constant. Moreover, it can result to matter-domination, or to a Big Rip, or experience the sequence from matter to dark energy domination. Additionally, in the case of closed curvature, the universe may experience a cosmological bounce or turnaround, or even cyclic behavior. Finally, these scenarios can easily satisfy the observational and phenomenological requirements. Hence, time asymmetric cosmology can be a good candidate for the description of the universe.
