Relativistic light-on-heavy nuclear collisions and the implied rapidity asymmetry

We calculate pseudorapidity ($η$) asymmetry in $pA$ and $dA$ collisions in a pQCD-improved parton model. With the calculations tuned to describe existing spectra from $pp$ collisions and asymmetric systems at midrapidity and large rapidities at FNAL and RHIC energies, we investigate the roles of nuclear shadowing and multiple scattering on the observed asymmetry. Using this framework, we make predictions for pseudorapidity asymmetries at high $p_T$ and large $η$ in a wide range of energies up to LHC.

Hadron production in deuteron-gold collisions and nuclear parton distributions

We calculate nuclear modification factors $R_{dAu}$, central-to-peripheral ratios, $R_{CP}$, and pseudorapidity asymmetries $Y_{Asym}$ in deuteron-gold collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV in the framework of leading-order (LO) perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. We use the Eskola-Kolhinen-Salgado (EKS), the Frankfurt-Guzey-Strikman (FGS) and the Hirai-Kumano-Nagai (HKN) nuclear parton distribution functions and the Albino-Kramer-Kniehl (AKK) fragmentation functions in our calculations. Results are compared to experimental data from the BRAHMS and STAR collaborations.

Intrinsic transverse momentum in di-hadron correlations

We study di-hadron correlations in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and interpret experimental data in terms of a fragmentation width and a momentum imbalance. A fragmentation width of $580 \pm 50$ GeV/c is obtained, and the measured momentum imbalance gives an `intrinsic' transverse momentum width of partons in the proton of $2.6 \pm 0.2$ GeV/c. Consequences to heavy ion collisions are discussed.

Probing small-$x$ gluons by low-mass Drell-Yan pairs at colliders

The transverse-momentum ($Q_T$) distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs is calculated in QCD perturbation theory with all-order resummation of $α_s (α_s \ln(Q^2_T/Q^2))^n$ type terms. We demonstrate that the rapidity distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs at large-enough transverse momentum is an advantageous source of constraints on the gluon distribution and its nuclear dependence. We argue that low-mass Drell-Yan pairs in the forward region provide a good and clean probe of small-$x$ gluons at collider energies.

The charged-hadron/pion ratio at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

The hadron/pion ratio is calculated in 200 GeV AuAu collisions at midrapidity, applying pQCD and non-universal transverse-momentum broadening. Arguments are presented for such non-universality, and the idea is implemented in a model, which explains the enhancement of the hadron/pion ratio in central AuAu collisions. The model also describes the qualitative difference between the recently-measured dAu nuclear enhancement factors for pions and charged hadrons.

Probing small-x gluons by low-mass Drell-Yan pairs at RHIC and LHC

We calculate the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs in QCD perturbation theory with all-order resummation. We demonstrate that the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs is an advantageous source of constraints on the gluon distribution and its nuclear dependence. With the reduction in background, we argue that low-mass Drell-Yan pairs in the forward region provide a good and clean probe of small-x gluons at RHIC and LHC.

Full transverse-momentum spectra of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs at LHC energies

The transverse momentum distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs is calculated in QCD perturbation theory with all-order resummation. We argue that at LHC energies the results should be reliable for the entire transverse momentum range. We demonstrate that the transverse momentum distribution of low-mass Drell-Yan pairs is an advantageous source of constraints on the gluon distribution and its nuclear dependence.

$Z^0$ and W transverse momentum spectra at the LHC

We discuss the transverse momentum distribution of $Z^0$ and $W^\pm$ gauge bosons at the LHC with $\sqrt s=14$ TeV for pp collisions and with $\sqrt s=5.5$ TeV for Pb+Pb collisions. Effects of power corrections and shadowing are also studied.

Z Production as a Test of Nuclear Effects at the LHC

We predict the Z transverse momentum distribution from proton-proton and nuclear collisions at the LHC. After demonstrating that higher-twist nuclear effects are very small, we propose $Z^0$ production as a precision test for leading-twist pQCD in the TeV energy region. We also point out that shadowing may result in unexpected phenomenology at the LHC.

Decisive Role of Fragmentation Functions in Hard Hadron Production

It is demonstrated that the fragmentation functions at large momentum fraction play a key role in hard hadron production from relativistic proton-proton collisions. We find that this region of the fragmentation functions is not strongly constrained by the electron-positron data. This freedom can be used (together with the transverse momentum distribution of partons) to reproduce hard pion-to-proton ratio data in relativistic proton-proton collisions.

Differences in high p_t meson production between CERN SPS and RHIC heavy ion collisions

In this talk we present a perturbative QCD improved parton model calculation for light meson production in high energy heavy ion collisions. In order to describe the experimental data properly, one needs to augment the standard pQCD model by the transverse momentum distribution of partons ("intrinsic k_T"). Proton-nucleus data indicate the presence of nuclear shadowing and multiscattering effects. Further corrections are needed in nucleus-nucleus collisions to explain the observed reduction of the cross section. We introduce the idea of proton dissociation and compare our calculations with the SPS and RHIC experimental data.

Nuclear Effects on Heavy Boson Production at RHIC and LHC

We predict W and Z transverse momentum distributions from proton-proton and nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC. A resummation formalism with power corrections to the renormalization group equations is used. The dependence of the resummed QCD results on the non-perturbative input is very weak for the systems considered. Shadowing effects are discussed and found to be unimportant at RHIC, but important for LHC. We study the enhancement of power corrections due to multiple scattering in nuclear collisions and numerically illustrate the weak effects of the dependence on the nuclear mass.

Effects of Dense Matter on Hadron Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions

The intrinsic transverse momentum distribution of partons in the nucleon can be used to explain a large amount of high-$p_T$ hadron and photon production data in high-energy nucleon-nucleon collisions at energies $\sqrt{s} \approx 20$ to 1800 GeV. However, proton-nucleus experiments at energies $\approx 30$ GeV show an extra enhancement (Cronin effect) in the yield of photons and mesons compared to a simple extrapolation of the proton-proton data. This enhancement is due to the effect of the dense hadronic matter encountered by the projectile proton in the nuclear environment. We discuss the origin and the properties of the nuclear enhancement.

Hard Photons and Neutral Pions from RHIC

In order to fix the parameters for predictions of hard photon and pion production in $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, proton-proton and proton-nucleus data are analyzed in perturbative QCD in the energy range $\sqrt{s} \approx 20-60$ GeV and a prediction at RHIC energy is given.

Saturating Cronin effect in ultrarelativistic proton-nucleus collisions

Pion and photon production cross sections are analyzed in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions at energies 20 GeV < s^1/2 < 60 GeV. We separate the proton-proton and nuclear contributions to transverse-momentum broadening and suggest a new mechanism for the nuclear enhancement in the high transverse-momentum region.

Saturation Properties of Nuclear Matter with a Nonlocal Confining Solitons

We examine saturation properties of a quark-based picture of nuclear matter. Soliton matter consisting of nonlocal confining solitons is used to model nuclear matter. Each composite nucleon is described by a non-topological soliton as given by the Global Color Model. We apply techniques and concepts from the discription of crystal lattices. In particular, the Wigner-Seitz approximation is used to calculate the properties of the soliton lattice at the mean-field level. We focus on infinite nuclear matter at around standard nuclear matter density with the simplest one-parameter assumption for the gluon propagator. the saturation density and incompressibility are calculated as functions of the single parameter of the model
