Medium effect on photon production in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

The effect of in-medium vector and axial-vector meson masses on photon production is studied. We assume that the effective mass of a vector meson in hot nuclear matter decreases according to a universal scaling law, while that of an axial-vector meson is given by Weinberg's mass formula. We find that the thermal production rate of photons increases with reduced masses, and is enhanced by an order of magnitude at T=160 MeV with $m_ρ=300$ MeV. Assuming a hydrodynamic evolution, we estimate the effect of the reduced masses on photon production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The result is compared to experimental data from the WA80/WA98 collaboration.

High-density nuclear matter with nonlocal confining solitons

An infinite system of nonlocal, individually confining solitons is considered as a model of high-density nuclear matter. The soliton-lattice problem is discussed in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. The cell size is varied to study the density dependence of physical quantities of interest. A transition to a system where quarks can migrate between solitons is found. We argue that this signals quark deconfinement. The model is applied to the calculation of selected in-medium properties.

Feedback from Freeze-out in Hydrodynamics

Most hydrodynamical calculations used in heavy-ion physics ignore the effect of freeze-out matter carrying energy and momentum away from the expanding fluid. In a simple one-dimensional model we compare calculated energy density and velocity profiles, with and without interaction between fluid-like and freeze-out parts of the system, in order to estimate the importance of this effect.

The hadron-quark transition with a lattice of nonlocal confining solitons

We use a lattice of nonlocal confining solitons to describe nuclear matter in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. The average density is varied by changing the size of the Wigner-Seitz cell. At sufficiently large density quark energy bands develop. The intersection of the filled valence band with the next empty band at a few times standard nuclear density signals a transition from a color insulator to a color conductor and is identified with the critical density for quark deconfinement.

Non-equilibrium modifications of the nuclear equation of state

Non-equilibrium modifications of the nuclear equation of state are assessed in the framework of Extended Irreversible Thermodynamics. The expected size of the non-equilibrium corrections to quantities like the nuclear-matter incompressibility $K$ and the liquid-vapor critical temperature $T_c$ are compared to the uncertainties associated at present with the usual equilibrium values. The quantitative estimates are obtained in situations characterized by a stationary planar shear flow of realistic magnitude, or by a stationary temperature gradient.

Electron-positron pairs from thermal resonances in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions

We use a boost-invariant one-dimensional (cylindrically symmetric) fluid dynamics code to calculate $e^+e^-$ production from $ρ^0$ and $ω$ decay in the central rapidity region of a central S+Au collision at $\sqrt{s}=20$ GeV/nucleon. We use equations of state with a first-order phase transition between a massless pion gas and quark gluon plasma, with transition temperatures in the range $150-200$ MeV. The production cross section at the $ρ$ mass loosely constrains the transition and freeze-out temperatures, and we find that the $m_T$ spectrum is a good thermometer for sufficiently high $T_c$.

Thermal photon production in high-energy nuclear collisions

We use a boost-invariant one-dimensional (cylindrically symmetric) fluid dynamics code to calculate thermal photon production in the central rapidity region of S+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at SPS energy ($\sqrt{s}=20$ GeV/nucleon). We assume that the hot matter is in thermal equilibrium throughout the expansion, but consider deviations from chemical equilibrium in the high temperature (deconfined) phase. We use equations of state with a first-order phase transition between a massless pion gas and quark gluon plasma, with transition temperatures in the range $150 \leq T_c \leq 200$ MeV.

Heavy resonance production in high energy nuclear collisions

We estimate freezeout conditions for $s$, $c$, and $b$ quarks in high energy nuclear collisions. Freezeout is due either to loss of thermal contact, or to particles ``wandering'' out of the region of hot matter. We then develop a thermal recombination model in which both single-particle (quark and antiquark) and two-particle (quark-antiquark) densities are conserved. Conservation of two-particle densities is necessary because quarks and antiquarks are always produced in coincidence, so that the local two-particle density can be much larger than the product of the single-particle densities. We use the freezeout conditions and recombination model to discuss heavy resonance production at zero baryon density in high energy nuclear collisions.

Classical Lagrangian Model of the Pauli Principle

A classical Lagrangian model of the Pauli potential is introduced. It is shown that the kinematic kinetic energy ($\sum \frac{1}{2} m v^2$) in the model approximately reproduces the energy of a free Fermi gas at low temperatures and at densities relevant in nuclear collisions with moderate beam energies. Differences between canonical and kinematic quantities are pointed out. The Pauli potential can be used in transport simulations.
