Protocols for Relay-Assisted Free-Space Optical Systems

We investigate transmission protocols for relay-assisted free-space optical (FSO) systems, when multiple parallel relays are employed and there is no direct link between the source and the destination. As alternatives to all-active FSO relaying, where all the available relays transmit concurrently, we propose schemes that select only a single relay to participate in the communication between the source and the destination in each transmission slot. This selection is based on the channel state information (CSI) obtained either from all or from some of the FSO links. Thus, the need for synchronizing the relays' transmissions is avoided and the slowly varying nature of the atmospheric channel is exploited. For both relay selection and all-active relaying, novel closed-form expressions for their outage performance are derived, assuming the versatile Gamma-Gamma channel model. Furthermore, based on the derived analytical results, the problem of allocating the optical power resources to the FSO links is addressed, and optimum and suboptimum solutions are proposed. Numerical results are provided for equal and non-equal length FSO links, which illustrate the outage behavior of the considered relaying protocols and demonstrate the significant performance gains offered by the proposed power allocation schemes.

Adaptive Subcarrier PSK Intensity Modulation in Free Space Optical Systems

We propose an adaptive transmission technique for free space optical (FSO) systems, operating in atmospheric turbulence and employing subcarrier phase shift keying (S-PSK) intensity modulation. Exploiting the constant envelope characteristics of S-PSK, the proposed technique offers efficient utilization of the FSO channel capacity by adapting the modulation order of S-PSK, according to the instantaneous state of turbulence induced fading and a pre-defined bit error rate (BER) requirement. Novel expressions for the spectral efficiency and average BER of the proposed adaptive FSO system are presented and performance investigations under various turbulence conditions and target BER requirements are carried out. Numerical results indicate that significant spectral efficiency gains are offered without increasing the transmitted average optical power or sacrificing BER requirements, in moderate-to-strong turbulence conditions. Furthermore, the proposed variable rate transmission technique is applied to multiple input multiple output (MIMO) FSO systems, providing additional improvement in the achieved spectral efficiency as the number of the transmit and/or receive apertures increases.

On the Monotonicity of the Generalized Marcum and Nuttall Q-Functions

Monotonicity criteria are established for the generalized Marcum Q-function, $\emph{Q}_{M}$, the standard Nuttall Q-function, $\emph{Q}_{M,N}$, and the normalized Nuttall Q-function, $\mathcal{Q}_{M,N}$, with respect to their real order indices M,N. Besides, closed-form expressions are derived for the computation of the standard and normalized Nuttall Q-functions for the case when M,N are odd multiples of 0.5 and $M\geq N$. By exploiting these results, novel upper and lower bounds for $\emph{Q}_{M,N}$ and $\mathcal{Q}_{M,N}$ are proposed. Furthermore, specific tight upper and lower bounds for $\emph{Q}_{M}$, previously reported in the literature, are extended for real values of M. The offered theoretical results can be efficiently applied in the study of digital communications over fading channels, in the information-theoretic analysis of multiple-input multiple-output systems and in the description of stochastic processes in probability theory, among others.

Level Crossing Rate and Average Fade Duration of the Multihop Rayleigh Fading Channel

We present a novel analytical framework for the evaluation of important second order statistical parameters, as the level crossing rate (LCR) and the average fade duration (AFD) of the amplify-and-forward multihop Rayleigh fading channel. More specifically, motivated by the fact that this channel is a cascaded one, which can be modelled as the product of N fading amplitudes, we derive novel analytical expressions for the average LCR and AFD of the product of N Rayleigh fading envelopes, or of the recently so-called N*Rayleigh channel. Furthermore, we derive simple and efficient closed-form approximations to the aforementioned parameters, using the multivariate Laplace approximation theorem. It is shown that our general results reduce to the specific dual-hop case, previously published. Numerical and computer simulation examples verify the accuracy of the presented mathematical analysis and show the tightness of the proposed approximations.

Level Crossing Rate and Average Fade Duration of the Double Nakagami-m Random Process and Application in MIMO Keyhole Fading Channels

We present novel exact expressions and accurate closed-form approximations for the level crossing rate (LCR) and the average fade duration (AFD) of the double Nakagami-m random process. These results are then used to study the second order statistics of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) keyhole fading channels with space-time block coding. Numerical and computer simulation examples validate the accuracy of the presented mathematical analysis and show the tightness of the proposed approximations.

On the Second Order Statistics of the Multihop Rayleigh Fading Channel

Second order statistics provides a dynamic representation of a fading channel and plays an important role in the evaluation and design of the wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present a novel analytical framework for the evaluation of important second order statistical parameters, as the level crossing rate (LCR) and the average fade duration (AFD) of the amplify-and-forward multihop Rayleigh fading channel. More specifically, motivated by the fact that this channel is a cascaded one and can be modeled as the product of N fading amplitudes, we derive novel analytical expressions for the average LCR and the AFD of the product of N Rayleigh fading envelopes (or of the recently so-called N*Rayleigh channel). Furthermore, we derive simple and efficient closed-form approximations to the aforementioned parameters, using the multivariate Laplace approximation theorem. It is shown that our general results reduce to the corresponding ones of the specific dual-hop case, previously published. Numerical and computer simulation examples verify the accuracy of the presented mathematical analysis and show the tightness of the proposed approximations.

Selective Cooperative Relaying over Time-Varying Channels

In selective cooperative relaying only a single relay out of the set of available relays is activated, hence the available power and bandwidth resources are efficiently utilized. However, implementing selective cooperative relaying in time-varying channels may cause frequent relay switchings that deteriorate the overall performance. In this paper, we study the rate at which a relay switching occurs in selective cooperative relaying applications in time-varying fading channels. In particular, we derive closed-form expressions for the relay switching rate (measured in Hz) for opportunistic relaying (OR) and distributed switch and stay combining (DSSC). Additionally, expressions for the average relay activation time for both of the considered schemes are also provided, reflecting the average time that a selected relay remains active until a switching occurs. Numerical results manifest that DSSC yields considerably lower relay switching rates than OR, along with larger average relay activation times, rendering it a better candidate for implementation of relay selection in fast fading environments.

On the Distribution of the Sum of Gamma-Gamma Variates and Applications in RF and Optical Wireless Communications

The Gamma-Gamma (GG) distribution has recently attracted the interest within the research community due to its involvement in various communication systems. In the context of RF wireless communications, GG distribution accurately models the power statistics in composite shadowing/fading channels as well as in cascade multipath fading channels, while in optical wireless (OW) systems, it describes the fluctuations of the irradiance of optical signals distorted by atmospheric turbulence. Although GG channel model offers analytical tractability in the analysis of single input single output (SISO) wireless systems, difficulties arise when studying multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, where the distribution of the sum of independent GG variates is required. In this paper, we present a novel simple closed-form approximation for the distribution of the sum of independent, but not necessarily identically distributed GG variates. It is shown that the probability density function (PDF) of the GG sum can be efficiently approximated either by the PDF of a single GG distribution, or by a finite weighted sum of PDFs of GG distributions. To reveal the importance of the proposed approximation, the performance of RF wireless systems in the presence of composite fading, as well as MIMO OW systems impaired by atmospheric turbulence, are investigated. Numerical results and simulations illustrate the accuracy of the proposed approach.

Variable-Rate M-PSK Communications without Channel Amplitude Estimation

Channel estimation at the receiver side is essential to adaptive modulation schemes, prohibiting low complexity systems from using variable rate and/or variable power transmissions. Towards providing a solution to this problem, we introduce a variable-rate (VR) M-PSK modulation scheme, for communications over fading channels, in the absence of channel gain estimation at the receiver. The choice of the constellation size is based on the signal-plus-noise (S+N) sampling value rather than on the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). It is analytically shown that S+N can serve as an excellent simpler criterion, alternative to S/N, for determining the modulation order in VR systems. In this way, low complexity transceivers can use VR transmissions in order to increase their spectral efficiency under an error performance constraint. As an application, we utilize the proposed VR modulation scheme in equal gain combining (EGC) diversity receivers.
