Inflation from the internal volume in type IIB/F-theory compactification

We study cosmological inflation within a recently proposed framework of perturbative moduli stabilisation in type IIB/F theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. The stabilisation mechanism utilises three stacks of magnetised 7-branes and relies on perturbative corrections to the Kähler potential that grow logarithmically in the transverse sizes of co-dimension two due to local tadpoles of closed string states in the bulk. The inflaton is the Kähler modulus associated with the internal compactification volume that starts rolling down the scalar potential from an initial condition around its maximum. Although the parameter space allows moduli stabilisation in de Sitter space, the resulting number of e-foldings is too low. An extra uplifting source of the vacuum energy is then required to achieve phenomenologically viable inflation and a positive (although tiny) vacuum energy at the minimum. Here we use, as an example, a new Fayet-Iliopoulos term proposed recently in supergravity that can be written for a non R-symmetry U(1) and is gauge invariant at the Lagrangian level; its possible origin though in string theory remains an open interesting problem.

Moduli Stabilization and Inflation in Type IIB/F-theory

In the first part of this talk, a short overview of the ongoing debate on the existence of de Sitter vacua in string theory is presented. In the second part, the moduli stabilisation and inflation are discussed in the context of type IIB/F-theory. Considering a configuration of three intersecting $D7$ branes with fluxes, it is shown that higher loop effects inducing logarithmic corrections to the Kähler potential can stabilise the Kähler moduli in a de Sitter Vacuum. When a new Fayet-Iliopoulos term is included, it is also possible to generate the required number of e-foldings and satisfy the conditions for slow-roll inflation.

Light Sterile Neutrino and Low Scale Left-Right Symmetry in D-brane inspired $SU(4)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$

Motivated by the ongoing searches for new physics at the LHC, we explore the low energy consequences of a D-brane inspired $ SU(4)_C\times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ (4-2-2) model. The Higgs sector consists of an $SU(4)$ adjoint, a pair $H+\bar H$ in $(4,1,2)+(\bar 4,1,2)$, and a bidoublet field in $h(1,2,2)$. With the $SU(4)$ adjoint the symmetry breaks to a left-right symmetric $SU(3)_C\times U(1)_{B-L} \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ model. A missing partner mechanism protects the $SU(2)_R$ Higgs doublets in $H,\bar H$, which subsequently break the symmetry to the Standard Model at a few TeV scale. An inverse seesaw mechanism generates masses for the observed neutrinos and also yields a sterile neutrino which can play the rôle of dark matter if its mass lies in the keV range. Other phenomenological implications including proton decay are briefly discussed.

Perturbative moduli stabilisation in type IIB/F-theory framework

We propose a new mechanism of (geometric) moduli stabilisation in type IIB/F-theory four-dimensional compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds, in the presence of 7-branes, that does not rely on non-perturbative effects. Complex structure moduli and the axion-dilaton system are stabilised in the standard way, without breaking supersymmetry, using 3-form internal fluxes. Kähler class moduli stabilisation utilises perturbative string loop corrections, together with internal magnetic fields along the D7-branes world-volume leading to Fayet-Iliopoulos D-terms in the effective supergravity action. The main ingredient that makes the stabilisation possible at a de Sitter vacuum is the logarithmic dependence of the string loop corrections in the large two-dimensional transverse volume limit of the 7-branes.

$n$-$\bar n$ oscillations and the neutron lifetime

Neutron-antineutron oscillations are considered in the light of recently proposed particle models, which claim to resolve the neutron lifetime anomaly, indicating the existence of baryon violating $ΔB=1$ interactions. Possible constraints are derived coming from the non-observation of neutron-antineutron oscillations, which can take place if the dark matter particle produced in neutron decay happens to be a Majorana fermion. It is shown that this can be realised in a simple MSSM extention where only the baryon number violating term $u^cd^cd^c$ is included whilst all other R-parity violating terms are prevented to avoid rapid proton decay. It is demostrated how this scenario can be implemented in a string motivated GUT broken to MSSM by fluxes.

New Physics Phenomena and F-theory GUTs

In this presentation the new physics implications of the $B$-meson decay anomalies, observed at LHCb, are discussed. In the first part of the talk a brief overview of the experimental status is presented. In the second part, a class of semi-local F-theory GUT models with additional neutral gauge bosons are proposed which are capable of accounting for the anomalous $B$-decay ratios $R_{K}$ and $R_{K^*}$

Vectorlike Particles, $Z'$ and Yukawa Unification in F-theory inspired $E_6$

We explore the low energy implications of an F-theory inspired $E_6$ model whose breaking yields, in addition to the MSSM gauge symmetry, a $Z'$ gauge boson associated with a $U(1)$ symmetry broken at the TeV scale. The zero mode spectrum of the effective low energy theory is derived from the decomposition of the $27$ and $\overline{27}$ representations of $E_6$ and we parametrise their multiplicities in terms of a minimum number of flux parameters. We perform a two-loop renormalisation group analysis of the gauge and Yukawa couplings of the effective theory model and estimate lower bounds on the new vectorlike particles predicted in the model. We compute the third generation Yukawa couplings in an F-theory context assuming an $E_8$ point of enhancement and express our results in terms of the local flux densities associated with the gauge symmetry breaking. We find that their values are compatible with the ones computed by the renormalisation group equations, and we identify points in the parameter space of the flux densities where the $t-b-τ$ Yukawa couplings unify.

Non-universal $Z'$ from Fluxed GUTs

We make a first systematic study of non-universal TeV scale neutral gauge bosons $Z'$ arising naturally from a class of F-theory inspired models broken via $SU(5)$ by flux. The phenomenological models we consider may originate from semi-local F-theory GUTs arising from a single $E_8$ point of local enhancement, assuming the minimal ${\cal Z}_2$ monodromy in order to allow for a renormalisable top quark Yukawa coupling. We classify such non-universal anomaly-free $U(1)'$ models requiring a minimal low energy spectrum and also allowing for a vector-like family. We discuss to what extent such models can account for the anomalous $B$-decay ratios $R_{K}$ and $R_{K^*}$.

Magnetic Monopoles and Free Fractionally Charged States at Accelerators and in Cosmic Rays

Unified theories of strong, weak and electromagnetic interactions which have electric charge quantization predict the existence of topologically stable magnetic monopoles. Intermediate scale monopoles are comparable with detection energies of cosmic ray monopoles at IceCube and other cosmic ray experiments. Magnetic monopoles in some models can be significantly lighter and carry two, three or possibly even higher quanta of the Dirac magnetic charge. They could be light enough for their effects to be detected at the LHC either directly or indirectly. An example based on a D-brane inspired $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ (trinification) model with the monopole carrying three quanta of Dirac magnetic charge is presented. These theories also predict the existence of color singlet states with fractional electric charge which may be accessible at the LHC.

Phenomenology with F-theory SU(5)

We explore the low energy phenomenology of an F-theory based SU(5) model which, in addition to the known quarks and leptons, contains Standard Model singlets, and vector-like color triplets and SU(2) doublets. Depending on their masses and couplings, some of these new particles may be observed at the LHC and future colliders. We discuss the restrictions by CKM constraints on their mixing with the ordinary down quarks of the three chiral familes. The model is consistent with gauge coupling unification at the usual supersymmetric GUT scale, dimension five proton decay is adequately suppressed, while dimension-six decay mediated by the superheavy gauge bosons is enhanced by a factor of 5-7. The third generation charged fermion Yukawa couplings yield the corresponding low-energy masses in reasonable agreement with observations. The hierarchical nature of the masses of lighter generations is accounted for via non-renormalisable interactions, with the perturbative vacuum expectation values of the SM singlet fields playing an essential role.

On the Octonionic Self Duality equations of 3-brane Instantons

We study the octonionic selfduality equations for $p=3$-branes in the light cone gauge and we construct explicitly, instanton solutions for spherical and toroidal topologies in various flat spacetime dimensions $(D=5+1,7+1,8+1,9+1)$, extending previous results for $p=2$ membranes. Assuming factorization of time we reduce the self-duality equations to integrable systems and we determine explicitly periodic, in Euclidean time, solutions in terms of the elliptic functions. These solutions describe 4d associative and non-associative calibrations in $D=7,8$ dimensions. It turns out that for spherical topology the calibration is non compact while for the toroidal topology is compact. We discuss possible applications of our results to the problem of 3-brane topology change and its implications for a non-perturbative definition of the 3-brane interactions.

Non-Minimal Quartic Inflation in Supersymmetric SO(10)

We describe how quartic ($λϕ^4$) inflation with non-minimal coupling to gravity is realized in realistic supersymmetric $SO(10)$ models. In a well-motivated example the $16-\overline{16}$ Higgs multiplets, which break $SO(10)$ to $SU(5)$ and yield masses for the right-handed neutrinos, provide the inflaton field $ϕ$. Thus, leptogenesis is a natural outcome in this class of $SO(10)$ models. Moreover, the adjoint (45-plet) Higgs also acquires a GUT scale value during inflation so that the monopole problem is evaded. The scalar spectral index $n_s$ is in good agreement with the observations and $r$, the tensor to scalar ratio, is predicted for realistic values of GUT parameters to be of order $10^{-3}-10^{-2}$.

R-Parity violation in F-Theory

We discuss R-parity violation (RPV) in semi-local and local F-theory constructions. We first present a detailed analysis of all possible combinations of RPV operators arising from semi-local F-theory spectral cover constructions, assuming an $SU(5)$ GUT. We provide a classification of all possible allowed combinations of RPV operators originating from operators of the form $10\cdot \bar 5\cdot \bar 5$, including the effect of $U(1)$ fluxes with global restrictions. We then relax the global constraints and perform explicit computations of the bottom/tau and RPV Yukawa couplings, at an $SO(12)$ local point of enhancement in the presence of general fluxes subject only to local flux restrictions. We compare our results to the experimental limits on each allowed RPV operator, and show that operators such as $LLe^c$, $LQd^c$ and $u^cd^cd^c$ may be present separately within current bounds, possibly on the edge of observability, suggesting lepton number violation or neutron-antineutron oscillations could constrain F-theory models.

Diphoton Resonance in F-theory inspired Flipped SO(10)

Motivated by the diphoton excess at 750 GeV reported by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, we present an F-theory inspired flipped $SO(10)$ model embedded in an $E_6$ GUT. The low energy spectrum includes the three MSSM chiral families, vectorlike color triplets, several pairs of charged $SU(2)_L$ singlet fields $(E^c, \bar E^c)$, as well as MSSM singlets, one or more of which can contribute to the resonance. Total decay width in the multi-GeV range can arise from couplings involving the singlet and MSSM fields

Masses of Third Family Vector-like Quarks and Leptons in Yukawa-Unified $E_6$

In supersymmetric $E_6$ the masses of the third family quarks and charged lepton, $t-b-τ$, as well as the masses of the vector-like quarks and leptons, $D-\bar{D}$ and $ L-\bar{L}$, may arise from the coupling $27_3$ x $27_3$ x $27_H$, where $27_3$ and $27_H$ denote the third family matter and Higgs multiplets respectively. We assume that the SO(10) singlet component in $27_H$ acquires a TeV scale VEV which spontaneously breaks U(1)$_ψ$ and provides masses to the vector-like particles in $27_3$, while the MSSM doublets in $27_H$ provide masses to $ t, b$ and $τ$. Imposing Yukawa coupling unification $h_t=h_b=h_τ=h_D=h_L$ at $M_{GUT}$ and employing the ATLAS and CMS constraints on the $Z'_ψ$ boson mass, we estimate the lower bounds on the third family vector-like particles $D-\bar{D}$ and $L-\bar{L}$ masses to be around 5.85 TeV and 2.9 TeV respectively. These bounds apply in the supersymmetric limit.

750 GeV Diphoton excess from $E_6$ in F-theory GUTs

We interpret the 750-760 GeV diphoton resonance as one or more of the spinless components of a singlet superfield arising from the three 27-dimensional representations of $E_6$ in F-theory, which also contain three copies of colour-triplet charge $\mp 1/3$ vector-like fermions $D_i,\bar{D}_i$ and inert Higgs doublets to which the singlets may couple. For definiteness we consider (without change) a model that was proposed some time ago which contains such states, as well as bulk exotics, leading to gauge coupling unification. The smoking gun prediction of the model is the existence of other similar spinless resonances, possibly close in mass to 750-760 GeV, decaying into diphotons, as well as the three families of vector-like fermions $D_i,\bar{D}_i$.

MSSM from F-theory SU(5) with Klein Monodromy

We revisit a class of $SU(5)$ SUSY GUT models which arise in the context of the spectral cover with Klein Group monodromy $V_4=Z_2\times Z_2$. We show that $Z_2$ matter parities can be realised via new geometric symmetries respected by the spectral cover. We discuss a particular example of this kind, where the low energy effective theory below the GUT scale is just the MSSM with no exotics and standard matter parity, extended by the seesaw mechanism with two right-handed neutrinos.

Phenomenological implications of a minimal F-theory GUT with discrete symmetry

We discuss the origin of both non-Abelian discrete family symmetry and Abelian continuous family symmetry, as well as matter parity, from F-theory SUSY GUTs. We propose a minimal model based on the smallest GUT group $SU(5)$, together with the non-Abelian family symmetry $D_4$ plus an Abelian family symmetry, where fluxes are responsible for doublet-triplet splitting, leading to a realistic low energy spectrum with phenomenologically acceptable quark and lepton masses and mixing. We show how a $Z_2$ matter parity emerging from F-theory can suppress proton decay while allowing neutron-antineutron oscillations, providing a distinctive signature of the set-up.
