Spectral asymptotics for canonical systems

Based on continuity properties of the de Branges correspondence, we develop a new approach to study the high-energy behavior of Weyl-Titchmarsh and spectral functions of $2\times2$ first order canonical systems. Our results improve several classical results and solve open problems posed by previous authors. Furthermore, they are applied to radial Dirac and radial Schrödinger operators as well as to Krein strings and generalized indefinite strings.

A Dynamic Uncertainty Principle for Jacobi Operators

We prove that a solution of the Schrödinger-type equation $\mathrm{i}\partial_t u= Hu$, where $H$ is a Jacobi operator with asymptotically constant coefficients, cannot decay too fast at two different times unless it is trivial.

Dispersion Estimates for Spherical Schrödinger Equations: The Effect of Boundary Conditions

We investigate the dependence of the $L^1\to L^\infty$ dispersive estimates for one-dimensional radial Schrö\-din\-ger operators on boundary conditions at $0$. In contrast to the case of additive perturbations, we show that the change of a boundary condition at zero results in the change of the dispersive decay estimates if the angular momentum is positive, $l\in (0,1/2)$. However, for nonpositive angular momenta, $l\in (-1/2,0]$, the standard $O(|t|^{-1/2})$ decay remains true for all self-adjoint realizations.

Rarefaction Waves of the Korteweg-de Vries Equation via Nonlinear Steepest Descent

We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of the Korteweg-de Vries equation with steplike initial data leading to a rarefaction wave. In addition to the leading asymptotic we also compute the next term in the asymptotic expansion of the rarefaction wave, which was not known before.

Decoupling of Deficiency Indices and Applications to Schrödinger-Type Operators with Possibly Strongly Singular Potentials

We investigate closed, symmetric $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$-realizations $H$ of Schrödinger-type operators $(- Δ+V)\upharpoonright_{C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n \setminus Σ)}$ whose potential coefficient $V$ has a countable number of well-separated singularities on compact sets $Σ_j$, $j \in J$, of $n$-dimensional Lebesgue measure zero, with $J \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ an index set and $Σ= \bigcup_{j \in J} Σ_j$. We show that the defect, $\mathrm{def}(H)$, of $H$ can be computed in terms of the individual defects, $\mathrm{def}(H_j)$, of closed, symmetric $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$-realizations of $(- Δ+ V_j)\upharpoonright_{C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^n \setminus Σ_j)}$ with potential coefficient $V_j$ localized around the singularity $Σ_j$, $j \in J$, where $V = \sum_{j \in J} V_j$. In particular, we prove \[ \mathrm{def}(H) = \sum_{j \in J} \mathrm{def}(H_j), \] including the possibility that one, and hence both sides equal $\infty$. We first develop an abstract approach to the question of decoupling of deficiency indices and then apply it to the concrete case of Schrödinger-type operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Moreover, we also show how operator (and form) bounds for $V$ relative to $H_0= - Δ\upharpoonright_{H^2(\mathbb{R}^n)}$ can be estimated in terms of the operator (and form) bounds of $V_j$, $j \in J$, relative to $H_0$. Again, we first prove an abstract result and then show its applicability to Schrödinger-type operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Extensions to second-order (locally uniformly) elliptic differential operators on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a possibly strongly singular potential coefficient are treated as well.

Dispersion Estimates for One-Dimensional Schrödinger and Klein-Gordon Equations Revisited

We show that for a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a potential whose first moment is integrable the scattering matrix is in the unital Wiener algebra of functions with integrable Fourier transforms. Then we use this to derive dispersion estimates for solutions of the associated Schrödinger and Klein-Gordon equations. In particular, we remove the additional decay conditions in the case where a resonance is present at the edge of the continuous spectrum.

Dispersion Estimates for the Discrete Laguerre Operator

We derive an explicit expression for the kernel of the evolution group $\exp(-\mathrm{i} t H_0)$ of the discrete Laguerre operator $H_0$ (i.e. the Jacobi operator associated with the Laguerre polynomials) in terms of Jacobi polynomials. Based on this expression we show that the norm of the evolution group acting from $\ell^1$ to $\ell^\infty$ is given by $(1+t^2)^{-1/2}$.

A coupling problem for entire functions and its application to the long-time asymptotics of integrable wave equations

We propose a novel technique for analyzing the long-time asymptotics of integrable wave equations in the case when the underlying isospectral problem has purely discrete spectrum. To this end, we introduce a natural coupling problem for entire functions, which serves as a replacement for the usual Riemann-Hilbert problem, which does not apply in these cases. As a prototypical example, we investigate the long-time asymptotics of the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation.

Modeling of breath methane concentration profiles during exercise on an ergometer

We develop a simple three compartment model based on mass balance equations which quantitatively describes the dynamics of breath methane concentration profiles during exercise on an ergometer. With the help of this model it is possible to estimate the endogenous production rate of methane in the large intestine by measuring breath gas concentrations of methane.

On the form of dispersive shock waves of the Korteweg-de Vries equation

We show that the long-time behavior of solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries shock problem can be described as a slowly modulated one-gap solution in the dispersive shock region. The modulus of the elliptic function (i.e., the spectrum of the underlying Schrödinger operator) depends only on the size of the step of the initial data and on the direction, $\frac{x}{t}=const.$, along which we determine the asymptotic behavior of the solution. In turn, the phase shift (i.e., the Dirichlet spectrum) in this elliptic function depends also on the scattering data, and is computed explicitly via the Jacobi inversion problem.

Dispersion Estimates for One-dimensional Discrete Schrödinger and Wave Equations

We derive dispersion estimates for solutions of the one-dimensional discrete perturbed Schrödinger and wave equations. In particular, we improve upon previous works and weaken the conditions on the potentials. To this end we also provide new results concerning scattering for one-dimensional discrete perturbed Schrödinger operators which are of independent interest. Most notably we show that the reflection and transmission coefficients belong to the Wiener algebra.

Real-valued algebro-geometric solutions of the two-component Camassa-Holm hierarchy

We provide a construction of the two-component Camassa-Holm (CH-2) hierarchy employing a new zero-curvature formalism and identify and describe in detail the isospectral set associated to all real-valued, smooth, and bounded algebro-geometric solutions of the $n$th equation of the stationary CH-2 hierarchy as the real $n$-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^n$. We employ Dubrovin-type equations for auxiliary divisors and certain aspects of direct and inverse spectral theory for self-adjoint singular Hamiltonian systems. In particular, we employ Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for singular (canonical) Hamiltonian systems. While we focus primarily on the case of stationary algebro-geometric CH-2 solutions, we note that the time-dependent case subordinates to the stationary one with respect to isospectral torus questions.

Zero Energy Scattering for One-Dimensional Schrödinger Operators and Applications to Dispersive Estimates

We show that for a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator with a potential whose (j+1)'th moment is integrable the j'th derivative of the scattering matrix is in the Wiener algebra of functions with integrable Fourier transforms. We use this result to improve the known dispersive estimates with integrable time decay for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation in the resonant case.
