Properties of the Scattering Matrix and Dispersion Estimates for Jacobi Operators

We show that for a Jacobi operator with coefficients whose (j+1)'th moments are summable the j'th derivative of the scattering matrix is in the Wiener algebra of functions with summable Fourier coefficients. We use this result to improve the known dispersive estimates with integrable time decay for the time dependent Jacobi equation in the resonant case.

Inverse scattering theory for Schrödinger operators with steplike potentials

We study the direct and inverse scattering problem for the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation with steplike potentials. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the scattering data to correspond to a potential with prescribed smoothness and prescribed decay to their asymptotics. These results are important for solving the Korteweg-de Vries equation via the inverse scattering transform.

Modeling-based determination of physiological parameters of systemic VOCs by breath gas analysis: a pilot study

In this paper we develop a simple two compartment model which extends the Farhi equation to the case when the inhaled concentration of a volatile organic compound (VOC) is not zero. The model connects the exhaled breath concentration of systemic VOCs with physiological parameters such as endogenous production rates and metabolic rates. Its validity is tested with data obtained for isoprene and inhaled deuterated isoprene-D5.

Spectral Asymptotics for Perturbed Spherical Schrödinger Operators and Applications to Quantum Scattering

We find the high energy asymptotics for the singular Weyl--Titchmarsh m-functions and the associated spectral measures of perturbed spherical Schrödinger operators (also known as Bessel operators). We apply this result to establish an improved local Borg-Marchenko theorem for Bessel operators as well as uniqueness theorems for the radial quantum scattering problem with nontrivial angular momentum.

Singular Schroedinger operators as self-adjoint extensions of n-entire operators

We investigate the connections between Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators and the theory of $n$-entire operators. As our main result we find a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator to be $n$-entire in terms of square integrability of derivatives (w.r.t. the spectral parameter) of the Weyl solution. We also show that this is equivalent to the Weyl function being in a generalized Herglotz-Nevanlinna class. As an application we show that perturbed Bessel operators are $n$-entire, improving the previously known conditions on the perturbation.

Potential of volatile organic compounds as markers of entrapped humans for use in urban search-and-rescue operations

Volatile organic compounds emitted by a human body form a chemical signature capable of providing invaluable information on the physiological status of an individual and, thereby, could serve as signs-of-life for detecting victims after natural or man-made disasters. In this review a database of potential biomarkers of human presence was created on the basis of existing literature reports on volatiles in human breath, skin emanation, blood, and urine. Approximate fluxes of these species from the human body were estimated and used to predict their concentrations in the vicinity of victims. The proposed markers were classified into groups of different potential for victim detection. The major classification discriminants were the capability of detection by portable, real-time analytical instruments and background levels in urban environment. The data summarized in this review are intended to assist studies on the detection of humans via chemical analysis and accelerate investigations in this area of knowledge.

Supersymmetry and Schrödinger-type operators with distributional matrix-valued potentials

Building on work on Miura's transformation by Kappeler, Perry, Shubin, and Topalov, we develop a detailed spectral theoretic treatment of Schrödinger operators with matrix-valued potentials, with special emphasis on distributional potential coefficients. Our principal method relies on a supersymmetric (factorization) formalism underlying Miura's transformation, which intimately connects the triple of operators $(D, H_1, H_2)$ of the form [D= (0 & A^*, A & 0) \text{in} L^2(\mathbb{R})^{2m} \text{and} H_1 = A^* A, H_2 = A A^* \text{in} L^2(\mathbb{R})^m.] Here $A= I_m (d/dx) + ϕ$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R})^m$, with a matrix-valued coefficient $ϕ= ϕ^* \in L^1_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb{R})^{m \times m}$, $m \in \mathbb{N}$, thus explicitly permitting distributional potential coefficients $V_j$ in $H_j$, $j=1,2$, where [H_j = - I_m \frac{d^2}{dx^2} + V_j(x), \quad V_j(x) = ϕ(x)^2 + (-1)^{j} ϕ'(x), j=1,2.] Upon developing Weyl--Titchmarsh theory for these generalized Schrödinger operators $H_j$, with (possibly, distributional) matrix-valued potentials $V_j$, we provide some spectral theoretic applications, including a derivation of the corresponding spectral representations for $H_j$, $j=1,2$. Finally, we derive a local Borg--Marchenko uniqueness theorem for $H_j$, $j=1,2$, by employing the underlying supersymmetric structure and reducing it to the known local Borg--Marchenko uniqueness theorem for $D$.

On Spectral Deformations and Singular Weyl Functions for One-Dimensional Dirac Operators

We investigate the connection between singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory and the double commutation method for one-dimensional Dirac operators. In particular, we compute the singular Weyl function of the commuted operator in terms of the data from the original operator. These results are then applied to radial Dirac operators in order to show that the singular Weyl function of such an operator belongs to a generalized Nevanlinna class $N_{κ_0}$ with $κ_0=\lfloor|κ| + \frac{1}{2}\rfloor$, where $κ\in \mathbb{R}$ is the corresponding angular momentum.

Inverse uniqueness results for one-dimensional weighted Dirac operators

Given a one-dimensional weighted Dirac operator we can define a spectral measure by virtue of singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory. Using the theory of de Branges spaces we show that the spectral measure uniquely determines the Dirac operator up to a gauge transformation. Our result applies in particular to radial Dirac operators and extends the classical results for Dirac operators with one regular endpoint. Moreover, our result also improves the currently known results for canonical (Hamiltonian) systems. If one endpoint is limit circle case, we also establish corresponding two-spectra results.

Singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for one-dimensional Dirac operators

We develop singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira theory for one-dimensional Dirac operators. In particular, we establish existence of a spectral transformation as well as local Borg-Marchenko and Hochstadt-Liebermann type uniqueness results. Finally, we give some applications to the case of radial Dirac operators.

One-dimensional Schroedinger operators with delta-prime-interactions on Cantor-type sets

We introduce a novel approach for defining a $δ'$-interaction on a subset of the real line of Lebesgue measure zero which is based on Sturm-Liouville differential expression with measure coefficients. This enables us to establish basic spectral properties (e.g., self-adjointness, lower semiboundedness and spectral asymptotics) of Hamiltonians with $δ'$-interactions concentrated on sets of complicated structures.

A Survey on the Krein-von Neumann Extension, the corresponding Abstract Buckling Problem, and Weyl-Type Spectral Asymptotics for Perturbed Krein Laplacians in Nonsmooth Domains

In the first (and abstract) part of this survey we prove the unitary equivalence of the inverse of the Krein--von Neumann extension (on the orthogonal complement of its kernel) of a densely defined, closed, strictly positive operator, $S\geq \varepsilon I_{\mathcal{H}}$ for some $\varepsilon >0$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ to an abstract buckling problem operator. This establishes the Krein extension as a natural object in elasticity theory (in analogy to the Friedrichs extension, which found natural applications in quantum mechanics, elasticity, etc.). In the second, and principal part of this survey, we study spectral properties for $H_{K,Ω}$, the Krein--von Neumann extension of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ (in short, the perturbed Krein Laplacian) defined on $C^\infty_0(Ω)$, where $V$ is measurable, bounded and nonnegative, in a bounded open set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ belonging to a class of nonsmooth domains which contains all convex domains, along with all domains of class $C^{1,r}$, $r>1/2$.

Inverse Spectral Theory for Sturm-Liouville Operators with Distributional Potentials

We discuss inverse spectral theory for singular differential operators on arbitrary intervals $(a,b) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ associated with rather general differential expressions of the type \[τf = \frac{1}{r} \left(- \big(p[f' + s f]\big)' + s p[f' + s f] + qf\right), \] where the coefficients $p$, $q$, $r$, $s$ are Lebesgue measurable on $(a,b)$ with $p^{-1}$, $q$, $r$, $s \in L^1_{\text{loc}}((a,b); dx)$ and real-valued with $p\not=0$ and $r>0$ a.e.\ on $(a,b)$. In particular, we explicitly permit certain distributional potential coefficients. The inverse spectral theory results derived in this paper include those implied by the spectral measure, by two-spectra and three-spectra, as well as local Borg-Marchenko-type inverse spectral results. The special cases of Schrödinger operators with distributional potentials and Sturm--Liouville operators in impedance form are isolated, in particular.

Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients

We give a comprehensive treatment of Sturm-Liouville operators with measure-valued coefficients including, a full discussion of self-adjoint extensions and boundary conditions, resolvents, and Weyl-Titchmarsh theory. We avoid previous technical restrictions and, at the same time, extend all results to a larger class of operators. Our operators include classical Sturm-Liouville operators, Lax operators arising in the treatment of the Camassa-Holm equation, Jacobi operators, and Sturm-Liouville operators on time scales as special cases.
