Scattering theory with finite-gap backgrounds: Transformation operators and characteristic properties of scattering data

We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators (doubly infinite second order difference operators) with steplike coefficients which are asymptotically close to different finite-gap quasi-periodic coefficients on different sides. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the scattering data in the case of perturbations with finite second (or higher) moment.

Uniqueness Results for Schroedinger Operators on the Line with Purely Discrete Spectra

We provide an abstract framework for singular one-dimensional Schroedinger operators with purely discrete spectra to show when the spectrum plus norming constants determine such an operator completely. As an example we apply our findings to prove a new uniqueness results for perturbed quantum mechanical harmonic oscillators. In addition, we also show how to establish a Hochstadt-Liebermann type result for these operators. Our approach is based on the singular Weyl-Titchmarsh theory which is extended to cover the present situation.

Weyl-Titchmarsh Theory for Sturm-Liouville Operators with Distributional Potentials

We systematically develop Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for singular differential operators on arbitrary intervals $(a,b) \subseteq \mathbb{R}$ associated with rather general differential expressions of the type \[ τf = \frac{1}{r} (- \big(p[f' + s f]\big)' + s p[f' + s f] + qf),] where the coefficients $p$, $q$, $r$, $s$ are real-valued and Lebesgue measurable on $(a,b)$, with $p\neq 0$, $r>0$ a.e.\ on $(a,b)$, and $p^{-1}$, $q$, $r$, $s \in L^1_{\text{loc}}((a,b); dx)$, and $f$ is supposed to satisfy [f \in AC_{\text{loc}}((a,b)), \; p[f' + s f] \in AC_{\text{loc}}((a,b)).] In particular, this setup implies that $τ$ permits a distributional potential coefficient, including potentials in $H^{-1}_{\text{loc}}((a,b))$. We study maximal and minimal Sturm-Liouville operators, all self-adjoint restrictions of the maximal operator $T_{\text{max}}$, or equivalently, all self-adjoint extensions of the minimal operator $T_{\text{min}}$, all self-adjoint boundary conditions (separated and coupled ones), and describe the resolvent of any self-adjoint extension of $T_{\text{min}}$. In addition, we characterize the principal object of this paper, the singular Weyl-Titchmarsh-Kodaira $m$-function corresponding to any self-adjoint extension with separated boundary conditions and derive the corresponding spectral transformation, including a characterization of spectral multiplicities and minimal supports of standard subsets of the spectrum. We also deal with principal solutions and characterize the Friedrichs extension of $T_{\text{min}}$. Finally, in the special case where $τ$ is regular, we characterize the Krein-von Neumann extension of $T_{\text{min}}$ and also characterize all boundary conditions that lead to positivity preserving, equivalently, improving, resolvents (and hence semigroups).

On Fourier transforms of radial functions and distributions

We find a formula that relates the Fourier transform of a radial function on $\mathbf{R}^n$ with the Fourier transform of the same function defined on $\mathbf{R}^{n+2}$. This formula enables one to explicitly calculate the Fourier transform of any radial function $f(r)$ in any dimension, provided one knows the Fourier transform of the one-dimensional function $t\to f(|t|)$ and the two-dimensional function $(x_1,x_2)\to f(|(x_1,x_2)|)$. We prove analogous results for radial tempered distributions.

On the isospectral problem of the dispersionless Camassa-Holm equation

We discuss direct and inverse spectral theory for the isospectral problem of the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation, where the weight is allowed to be a finite signed measure. In particular, we prove that this weight is uniquely determined by the spectral data and solve the inverse spectral problem for the class of measures which are sign definite. The results are applied to deduce several facts for the dispersionless Camassa--Holm equation. In particular, we show that initial conditions with integrable momentum asymptotically split into a sum of peakons as conjectured by McKean.

Stability of the periodic Toda lattice under short range perturbations

We consider the stability of the periodic Toda lattice (and slightly more generally of the algebro-geometric finite-gap lattice) under a short range perturbation. We prove that the perturbed lattice asymptotically approaches a modulated lattice. More precisely, let $g$ be the genus of the hyperelliptic curve associated with the unperturbed solution. We show that, apart from the phenomenon of the solitons travelling on the quasi-periodic background, the $n/t$-pane contains $g+2$ areas where the perturbed solution is close to a finite-gap solution in the same isospectral torus. In between there are $g+1$ regions where the perturbed solution is asymptotically close to a modulated lattice which undergoes a continuous phase transition (in the Jacobian variety) and which interpolates between these isospectral solutions. In the special case of the free lattice ($g=0$) the isospectral torus consists of just one point and we recover the known result. Both the solutions in the isospectral torus and the phase transition are explicitly characterized in terms of Abelian integrals on the underlying hyperelliptic curve. Our method relies on the equivalence of the inverse spectral problem to a matrix Riemann--Hilbert problem defined on the hyperelliptic curve and generalizes the so-called nonlinear stationary phase/steepest descent method for Riemann--Hilbert problem deformations to Riemann surfaces.

Abstract Wave Equations and Associated Dirac-Type Operators

We discuss the unitary equivalence of generators $G_{A,R}$ associated with abstract damped wave equations of the type $\ddot{u} + R \dot{u} + A^*A u = 0$ in some Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_1$ and certain non-self-adjoint Dirac-type operators $Q_{A,R}$ (away from the nullspace of the latter) in $\mathcal{H}_1 \oplus \mathcal{H}_2$. The operator $Q_{A,R}$ represents a non-self-adjoint perturbation of a supersymmetric self-adjoint Dirac-type operator. Special emphasis is devoted to the case where 0 belongs to the continuous spectrum of $A^*A$. In addition to the unitary equivalence results concerning $G_{A,R}$ and $Q_{A,R}$, we provide a detailed study of the domain of the generator $G_{A,R}$, consider spectral properties of the underlying quadratic operator pencil $M(z) = |A|^2 - iz R - z^2 I_{\mathcal{H}_1}$, $z\in\mathbb{C}$, derive a family of conserved quantities for abstract wave equations in the absence of damping, and prove equipartition of energy for supersymmetric self-adjoint Dirac-type operators. The special example where $R$ represents an appropriate function of $|A|$ is treated in depth and the semigroup growth bound for this example is explicitly computed and shown to coincide with the corresponding spectral bound for the underlying generator and also with that of the corresponding Dirac-type operator. The cases of undamped (R=0) and damped ($R \neq 0$) abstract wave equations as well as the cases $A^* A \geq εI_{\mathcal{H}_1}$ for some $ε> 0$ and $0 \in σ(A^* A)$ (but 0 not an eigenvalue of $A^*A$) are separately studied in detail.

Sturm-Liouville operators on time scales

We establish the connection between Sturm-Liouville equations on time scales and Sturm--Liouville equations with measure-valued coefficients. Based on this connection we generalize several results for Sturm-Liouville equations on time scales which have been obtained by various authors in the past.

Lieb-Robinson Bounds for the Toda Lattice

We establish locality estimates, known as Lieb-Robinson bounds, for the Toda lattice. In contrast to harmonic models, the Lieb-Robinson velocity for these systems do depend on the initial condition. Our results also apply to the entire Toda as well as the Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy. Under suitable assumptions, our methods also yield a finite velocity for certain perturbations of these systems.

Weyl-Titchmarsh Theory for Schroedinger Operators with Strongly Singular Potentials

We develop Weyl-Titchmarsh theory for Schroedinger operators with strongly singular potentials such as perturbed spherical Schroedinger operators (also known as Bessel operators). It is known that in such situations one can still define a corresponding singular Weyl m-function and it was recently shown that there is also an associated spectral transformation. Here we will give a general criterion when the singular Weyl function can be analytically extended to the upper half plane. We will derive an integral representation for this singular Weyl function and give a criterion when it is a generalized Nevanlinna function. Moreover, we will show how essential supports for the Lebesgue decomposition of the spectral measure can be obtained from the boundary behavior of the singular Weyl function. Finally, we will prove a local Borg-Marchenko type uniqueness result. Our criteria will in particular cover the aforementioned case of perturbed spherical Schroedinger operators.

Trace Formulas for Schroedinger Operators in Connection with Scattering Theory for Finite-Gap Backgrounds

We investigate trace formulas for one-dimensional Schroedinger operators which are trace class perturbations of quasi-periodic finite-gap operators using Krein's spectral shift theory. In particular, we establish the conserved quantities for the solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy in this class and relate them to the reflection coefficients via Abelian integrals on the underlying hyperelliptic Riemann surface.

Long-Time Asymptotics of Perturbed Finite-Gap Korteweg-de Vries Solutions

We apply the method of nonlinear steepest descent to compute the long-time asymptotics of solutions of the Korteweg--de Vries equation which are decaying perturbations of a quasi-periodic finite-gap background solution. We compute a nonlinear dispersion relation and show that the $x/t$ plane splits into $g+1$ soliton regions which are interlaced by $g+1$ oscillatory regions, where $g+1$ is the number of spectral gaps. In the soliton regions the solution is asymptotically given by a number of solitons travelling on top of finite-gap solutions which are in the same isospectral class as the background solution. In the oscillatory region the solution can be described by a modulated finite-gap solution plus a decaying dispersive tail. The modulation is given by phase transition on the isospectral torus and is, together with the dispersive tail, explicitly characterized in terms of Abelian integrals on the underlying hyperelliptic curve.

Unique continuation for discrete nonlinear wave equations

We establish unique continuation for various discrete nonlinear wave equations. For example, we show that if two solutions of the Toda lattice coincide for one lattice point in some arbitrarily small time interval, then they coincide everywhere. Moreover, we establish analogous results for the Toda, Kac-van Moerbeke, and Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchies. Although all these equations are integrable, the proof does not use integrability and can be adapted to other equations as well.
