Flavor Violation in Theories with TeV Scale Quantum Gravity

We study the effects of possible flavor-violating operators in theories with the TeV scale quantum gravity, in which the ordinary matter is localized on a 3-brane embedded in the space with $N$ extra dimensions, whereas gravity propagates in the bulk. These operators are scaled by the fundamental Planck mass $M_{Pf}\sim$ TeV and must be suppressed by the gauge family symmetries. We study suppression of the most dangerous and model-independent operators. Several points emerge. First, we show that the Abelian symmetries can not do the job and one has to invoke non-Abelian $U(2)_F$ (or $U(3)_F$) symmetries. However, even in this case there emerge severe restrictions on the fermion mixing pattern and the whole structure of the theory. In order not to be immediately excluded by the well-known bounds, the horizontal gauge fields {\it must} be the bulk modes, like gravitons. For the generic hierarchical breaking pattern the four-fermion operators induced by the tree-level exchange of the bulk gauge fields are unsuppressed for $N = 2$. For $N > 3$ the suppression factor goes as a square of the largest $U(2)_F$-non-invariant Yukawa coupling, which implies the lower bound $M_{Pf} > 10$ TeV or so from the $K^0 - \bar K^0$ system. Situation is different in the scenarios when flavor Higgs fields live on a ($3 + N'$)-brane of lower dimensionality than the gauge fields. The further suppression of gauge-mediated operators can be achieved by an explicit construction: for instance, if $U(2)_F$ is broken by a vacuum expectation value of the doublet, the troublesome operators are suppressed in the leading order, due to custodial SO(4) symmetry of the Higgs-gauge quartic coupling.

High Temperature Symmetry Breaking, SUSY Flat Directions, and the Monopole Problem

Supersymmetric flat directions allow a generic counterexample to the phenomenon of symmetry restoration at high temperatures. We show that (exponentially) large VEVs can be developed along these directions through temperature-induced `dimensional transmutation'. A minimum with broken gauge charges (e.g. electric charge) can exist at arbitrarily high temperatures. In such a scenario magnetic monopoles are never formed, independent of whether inflation occurs before or after the GUT phase transition, or whether it occurs at all.

Naturally Light Sterile Neutrinos in Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking

Moduli are generic in string (M) theory. In a large class of gauge-mediated Supersymmetry breaking models, the fermionic components of such fields have very light masses, around the eV scale, and non-negligible mixing with active neutrinos, of order $10^{-4}$. Consequently, these fermions could play the role of sterile neutrinos to which active neutrinos oscillate, thus affecting measurements of solar neutrinos or of atmospheric neutrinos. They could also provide warm dark matter, thus affecting structure formation.

Phenomenology, Astrophysics and Cosmology of Theories with Sub-Millimeter Dimensions and TeV Scale Quantum Gravity

We recently proposed a solution to the hierarchy problem not relying on low-energy supersymmetry or technicolor. Instead, the problem is nullified by bringing quantum gravity down to the TeV scale. This is accomplished by the presence of $n \geq 2$ new dimensions of sub-millimeter size, with the SM fields localised on a 3-brane in the higher dimensional space. In this paper we systematically study the experimental viability of this scenario. Constraints arise both from strong quantum gravitational effects at the TeV scale, and more importantly from the production of massless higher dimensional gravitons with TeV suppressed couplings. Theories with $n>2$ are safe due mainly to the infrared softness of higher dimensional gravity. For $n=2$, the six dimensional Planck scale must be pushed above $\sim 30$ TeV to avoid cooling SN1987A and distortions of the diffuse photon background. Nevertheless, the particular implementation of our framework within type I string theory can evade all constraints, for any $n \geq 2$, with string scale $m_s \sim 1$ TeV. We also explore novel phenomena resulting from the existence of new states propagating in the higher dimensional space. The Peccei-Quinn solution to the strong CP problem is revived with a weak scale axion in the bulk. Gauge fields in the bulk can mediate repulsive forces $\sim 10^6 - 10^8$ times stronger than gravity at sub-mm distances, and may help stabilize the proton. Higher-dimensional gravitons produced on our brane and captured on a different "fat" brane can provide a natural dark matter candidate.

The Hierarchy Problem and New Dimensions at a Millimeter

We propose a new framework for solving the hierarchy problem which does not rely on either supersymmetry or technicolor. In this framework, the gravitational and gauge interactions become united at the weak scale, which we take as the only fundamental short distance scale in nature. The observed weakness of gravity on distances $\gsim$ 1 mm is due to the existence of $n \geq 2$ new compact spatial dimensions large compared to the weak scale. The Planck scale $M_{Pl} \sim G_N^{-1/2}$ is not a fundamental scale; its enormity is simply a consequence of the large size of the new dimensions. While gravitons can freely propagate in the new dimensions, at sub-weak energies the Standard Model (SM) fields must be localized to a 4-dimensional manifold of weak scale "thickness" in the extra dimensions. This picture leads to a number of striking signals for accelerator and laboratory experiments. For the case of $n=2$ new dimensions, planned sub-millimeter measurements of gravity may observe the transition from $1/r^2 \to 1/r^4$ Newtonian gravitation. For any number of new dimensions, the LHC and NLC could observe strong quantum gravitational interactions. Furthermore, SM particles can be kicked off our 4 dimensional manifold into the new dimensions, carrying away energy, and leading to an abrupt decrease in events with high transverse momentum $p_T \gsim$ TeV. For certain compact manifolds, such particles will keep circling in the extra dimensions, periodically returning, colliding with and depositing energy to our four dimensional vacuum with frequencies of $ \sim 10^{12}$ Hz or larger. As a concrete illustration, we construct a model with SM fields localised on the 4-dimensional throat of a vortex in 6 dimensions, with a Pati-Salam gauge symmetry $SU(4) \times SU(2) \times SU(2)$ in the bulk.

Dynamical Flavor Hierarchy and Heavy Top

In the Standard Model one of the generations is much heavier than the other two. We propose a simple mechanism where all three generations are treated on the equal footing to begin with, and one heavy and two light families emerge from supersymmetric strong dynamics. The Yukawa mass matrix is identified with vevs of the meson fields of some additional gauge theory. It is then forced to have rank one (in the leading order) by non-perturbative superpotential.

New physics in a nutshell, or Q-ball as a power plant

Future experiments may discover new scalar particles with global charges and couplings that allow for solitonic states. If the effective potential has flat directions, the scalar VEV inside a large Q-ball can exceed the particle mass by many orders of magnitude. Models with low-energy supersymmetry breaking generically have both the scalars carrying some global charges, and the flat directions. The Q-ball interior can, therefore, provide an environment for exploring physics far beyond the TeV scale without the need for building colliders of ever-increasing energies. Some Standard Model processes, otherwise strongly suppressed, can also be studied inside the soliton, where the SU(2) symmetry can be restored, and the quark confinement may be absent. Baryon number violating processes catalyzed by the large VEV inside the Q-ball can provide an inexhaustible energy resource.

A Remark on Dilaton Stabilization

Dilaton stabilization may occur in a theory based on a single asymptotically free gauge group with matter due to an interplay between quantum modification of the moduli space and tree-level superpotential. We present a toy model where such a mechanism is realized. Dilaton stabilization in this mechanism tends to occur at strong coupling values unless some unnatural adjustment of parameters is involved.

A Simple Complete Model of Gauge-Mediated SUSY-Breaking and Dynamical Relaxation Mechanism for Solving the mu-Problem

In this paper two things are done. First, we propose a simple model of dynamical gauge-mediated SUSY breaking. This model incorporates a dynamical relaxation mechanism which solves the μ-problem with no light fields beyond those of the MSSM. In the second part of the paper we show how this mechanism is generalized and give two more examples in which it is incorporated.

Anomalous U(1), Gauge-Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking and Higgs as Pseudo-Goldstone Bosons

We study the breaking of supersymmetry in models with anomalous U(1). These models are simple to construct and contain natural candidates for being the messengers of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. When some of the ordinary matter fields transform under the anomalous U(1), we find a hybrid scenario in which the U(1) and the gauge interactions mediate the breaking of supersymmetry. This leads to a hierarchy of soft masses between the charged and neutral fields and provides a solution to the $μ$-problem. Among these models, we present a scenario in which the Higgs arises as a pseudo-Goldstone boson. This scenario naturally allows for values of the $μ$-term and the scalar soft masses larger than the weak scale.

Hybrid Inflation and Particle Physics

The prototype hybrid SUSY SU(5) inflation models, while well motivated from particle physics, and while allowing an acceptable inflationary phase with little or no fine tuning, are shown to have two fundamental phenomenological problems. (1) They inevitably result in the wrong vacuum after inflation is over; and (2) they do not solve the monopole problem. In order to get around the first problem the level of complexity of these models must be increased. One can also avoid the second problem in this way. We also demonstate another possibility by proposing a new general mechanism to avoid the monopole problem with, or without inflation.

Supersymmetry Breaking with Vanishing F-terms in Supergravity Theories

In conventional supergravity theories, supersymmetry is broken by a non-zero F-term, and the cosmological constant is fine tuned to zero by a constant in the superpotential W. We discuss a class of supergravity theories with vanishing F-terms but $W \not= 0$ being generated dynamically. The cosmological constant is assumed to be cancelled by a non-zero D-term. In this scenario the gravity-mediated soft masses depend only on a single parameter, the gravitino mass. They are automatically universal, independently of the Kahler metric, and real. Thus, dangerous flavor or CP violating interactions are suppressed. Unlike in conventional supergravity models, the Polonyi problem does not arise.

Minimalism in Inflation Model Building

In this paper we demand that a successfull inflationary scenario should follow from a model entirely motivated by particle physics considerations. We show that such a connection is indeed possible within the framework of concrete supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories where the doublet-triplet splitting problem is naturally solved. The Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term of a gauge $U(1)_ξ$ symmetry, which plays a crucial role in the solution of the doublet-triplet splitting problem, simultaneously provides a built-in inflationary slope protected from dangerous supergravity corrections.

Dynamical Inflation and Unification Scale on Quantum Moduli Spaces

We show that simple strongly coupled supersymmetric gauge theories with quantum moduli spaces can naturally lead to hybrid inflation. These theories contain no input dimensionful or small parameters. The effective superpotential is linear in the inflaton field; this ensures that supergravity corrections do not spoil the slow roll conditions for inflation. We construct a simple theory in which the classical moduli space exhibits neither GUT-symmetry-breaking nor inflation whereas its quantum modification exhibits both. As a result, the dynamical origin and scales of inflation and grand unification coincide.

Dynamical Soft Terms with Unbroken Supersymmetry

We construct a class of simple and calculable theories for the supersymmetry breaking soft terms. They are based on quantum modified moduli spaces. These theories do not break supersymmetry in their ground state; instead we postulate that we live in a supersymmetry breaking plateau of false vacua. We demonstrate that tunneling from the plateau to the supersymmetric ground state is highly supressed. At one loop, the plateau develops a local minimum which can be anywhere between $10^8$ GeV and the grand unification scale. The value of this minimum is the mass of the messengers of supersymmetry breaking. Primordial element abundances indicate that the messengers' mass is smaller than $10^{12}$ GeV.

The Role of the Anomalous U(1)_A for the Solution of the Doublet-Triplet Splitting Problem

The anomalous U(1)_A symmetry provides a generic method of getting accidental symmetries. Therefore, it can play a crucial role in solving the doublet-triplet splitting and the μ-problems via the `pseudo-Goldstone' mechanism: U(1)_A can naturally uncorrelate the two grand unified Higgs sectors in the superpotential and simultaneously induce the desired expectation values through the Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term. The zero modes of the resulting compact vacuum degeneracy can be identified with the massless electroweak Higgs doublets. This automatically solves the doublet-triplet splitting and the μ-problems to all orders in M_P^{-1}. No additional discrete or global symmetries are needed. U(1)_A can also play the role of the `matter parity' and suppress the baryon number violating operators. We present the simplest SU(6) gauge model with a minimal Higgs sector and no doublet-triplet splitting problem. This model also relates the fermion mass hierarchy to the hierarchy of scales and predicts, for the generic non-minimal Kahler potential, approximately universal values for the tree-level electroweak Higgs mass parameters.

Anomalous U(1) as a mediator of Supersymmetry Breaking

We point out that an anomalous gauge U(1) symmetry is a natural candidate for being the mediator and messenger of supersymmetry breaking. It facilitates dynamical supersymmetry breaking even in the flat limit. Soft masses are induced by both gravity and the U(1) gauge interactions giving an unusual mass hierarchy in the sparticle spectrum which suppresses flavor violations. This scenario does not suffer from the Polonyi problem.

D-Term Inflation

We show that inflation which is dominated by the D-term density avoids the `slow-roll' problem of inflation in supergravity. Such an inflationary scenario can naturally emerge in theories with non-anomalous or anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry. In the latter case the scale of inflation is fixed by the Green--Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation. The crucial point is that the (super)gravity-mediated curvature of all the scalar fields (and, in particular, of the inflaton), which in the standard F-dominated case is of the order of the Hubble parameter, is absent in the D-term inflation case. The curvature of moduli and of all other flat directions during such an inflation crucially depends on their gauge charges.
