PT-symmetric phase in kagome photonic lattices

Kagome lattice is a two-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles and is often associated with geometrical frustration. In particular, the frustrated coupling between waveguide modes in a kagome array leads to a dispersionless flat band consisting of spatially localized modes. Here we propose a complex photonic lattice by placing $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimers at the kagome lattice points. Each dimer corresponds to a pair of strongly coupled waveguides. With balanced arrangement of gain and loss on individual dimers, the system exhibits a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric phase for finite gain/loss parameter up to a critical value. The beam evolution in this complex kagome waveguide array exhibits a novel oscillatory rotation of optical power along the propagation distance. Long-lived local chiral structures originating from the nearly flat bands of the kagome structure are observed when the lattice is subject to a narrow beam excitation.

Direct Visualization of Memory Effects in Artificial Spin Ice

We experimentally demonstrate that arrays of interacting nanoscale ferromagnetic islands, known as artificial spin ice, develop reproducible microstates upon cycling an applied magnetic field. The onset of this memory effect is determined by the strength of the applied field relative to the array coercivity. Specifically, when the applied field strength is almost exactly equal to the array coercivity, several training cycles are required before the array achieves a nearly completely repeatable microstate, whereas when the applied field strength is stronger or weaker than the array coercivity, a repeatable microstate is achieved after the first minor loop. We show through experiment and simulation that this memory exhibited by artificial spin ice is due to a ratchet effect on interacting, magnetically-charged defects in the island moment configuration and to the complexity of the network of strings of reversed moments that forms during magnetization reversal.

Topological defects as relics of emergent continuous symmetry and Higgs condensation of disorder in ferroelectrics

Lars Onsager and Richard Feynman envisioned that the three-dimensional (3D) superfluid-to-normal $λ$ transition in $^{4}$He occurs through the proliferation of vortices. This process should hold for every phase transition in the same universality class. The role of topological defects in symmetry-breaking phase transitions has become a prime topic in cosmology and high-temperature superconductivity, even though direct imaging of these defects is challenging. Here we show that the U(1) continuous symmetry that emerges at the ferroelectric critical point of multiferroic hexagonal manganites leads to a similar proliferation of vortices. Moreover, the disorder field (vortices) is coupled to an emergent U(1) gauge field, which becomes massive by means of the Higgs mechanism when vortices condense (span the whole system) upon heating above the ferroelectric transition temperature. Direct imaging of the vortex network in hexagonal manganites offers unique experimental access to this dual description of the ferroelectric transition, while enabling tests of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

Quantum Hall ice

We show that the chiral kagome ice manifold exhibits an anomalous integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) when coupled to itinerant electrons. Although electron-mediated interactions select a magnetically ordered ground state, the full ice manifold can coexist with the IQHE over a range of finite temperatures. The degenerate ice states provide a natural realization of power-law correlated flux disorder, for which the spectral gap of the system remains robust. The quantized (up to exponentially small finite-temperature corrections) Hall conductance persists over a wide range of electron densities due to the disorder-induced localization of electronic states.

Novel magnetic orderings in the kagome Kondo-lattice model

We consider the Kondo-lattice model on the kagome lattice and study its weak-coupling instabilities at band filling fractions for which the Fermi surface has singularities. These singularites include Dirac points, quadratic Fermi points in contact with a flat band, and Van Hove saddle points. By combining a controlled analytical approach with large-scale numerical simulations, we demonstrate that the weak-coupling instabilities of the Kondo-lattice model lead to exotic magnetic orderings. In particular, some of these magnetic orderings produce a spontaneous quantum anomalous Hall state.

Raman Scattering Signatures of Kitaev Spin Liquids in A$_2$ IrO$_3$ Iridates

We study theoretically the Raman scattering response $I(ω)$ in the gapless quantum spin liquid phase of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model. The dominant polarization-independent contribution $I_K (ω)$ reflects the density of states of the emergent Majorana fermions in the ground-state flux-sector. The integrability-breaking Heisenberg exchange generates a second contribution, whose dominant part $I_H (ω)$ has the form of a quantum quench corresponding to an abrupt insertion of four $Z_2$ gauge fluxes. This results in a weakly polarization dependent response with a sharp peak at the energy of the flux excitation accompanied by broad features, which can be related to Majorana fermions in the presence of the perturbed gauge field. We discuss the experimental situation and explore more generally the influence of integrability breaking for Kitaev spin liquid response functions.

Stiffness from Disorder in Triangular-Lattice Ising Thin Films

We study the triangular lattice Ising model with a finite number of vertically stacked layers and demonstrate a low temperature reentrance of two Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions, which results in an extended disordered regime down to $T=0$. Numerical results are complemented with the derivation of an effective low-temperature dimer theory. Contrary to order by disorder, we present a new scenario for fluctuation-induced ordering in frustrated spin systems. While short-range spin-spin correlations are enhanced by fluctuations, quasi-long-range ordering is precluded at low enough temperatures by proliferation of topological defects.

Dynamically generated flat-band phases in optical kagome lattices

Motivated by recent advances in the realization of complex two-dimensional optical lattices, we investigate theoretically the quantum transport of ultracold fermions in an optical kagome lattice. In particular, we focus on its extensively degenerate localized states (flat band). By loading fermions in a partial region of the lattice and depleting the mobile atoms at the far boundary of the initially unoccupied region, we find a dynamically generated flat-band insulator, which is also a population-inverted state. We further show that inclusion of weak repulsion leads to a dynamical stripe phase for two-component fermions in a similar setup. Finally, by preparing a topological insulating state in a partially occupied kagome lattice, we find that the topological chiral current decays but exhibits an interesting oscillating dynamics during the nonequilibrium transport. Given the broad variety of lattice geometries supporting localized or topological states, our work suggests new possibilities to use geometrical effects and their dynamics in atomtronic devices.

Avalanches and disorder-induced criticality in artificial spin ices

We show that both square and kagome artificial spin ice systems exhibit disorder-induced nonequilibrium phase transitions, with power law avalanche distributions at the critical disorder level. The different nature of geometrical frustration in the two lattices produces distinct types of critical avalanche behavior. For the square ice, the avalanches involve the propagation of locally stable domain walls separating the two polarized ground states, and the scaling collapse agrees with an interface depinning mechanism. In contrast, avalanches in the fully frustrated kagome ice exhibit pronounced branching behaviors that resemble those found in directed percolation. The kagome ice also shows an interesting crossover in the power-law scaling of the avalanches at low disorder. Our results show that artificial spin ices are ideal systems in which to study nonequilibrium critical point phenomena.

Realizing three-dimensional artificial spin ice by stacking planar nanoarrays

Artificial spin ice is a frustrated magnetic two-dimensional nano-material, recently employed to study variety of tailor-designed unusual collective behaviours. Recently proposed extensions to three dimensions are based on self-assembly techniques and allow little control over geometry and disorder. We present a viable design for the realization of a three-dimensional artificial spin ice with the same level of precision and control allowed by lithographic nano-fabrication of the popular two-dimensional case. Our geometry is based on layering already available two-dimensional artificial spin ice and leads to an arrangement of ice-rule-frustrated units which is topologically equivalent to that of the tetrahedra in a pyrochlore lattice. Consequently, we show, it exhibits a genuine ice phase and its excitations are, as in natural spin ice materials, magnetic monopoles interacting via Coulomb law.

Four-coloring model and frustrated superfluidity in the diamond lattice

We propose a novel four-coloring model which describes "frustrated superfluidity" of $p$-band bosons in the diamond optical lattice. The superfluid phases of the condensate wavefunctions on the diamond-lattice bonds are mapped to four distinct colors at low temperatures. The fact that a macroscopic number of states satisfy the constraints that four differently colored bonds meet at the same site leads to an extensive degeneracy in the superfluid ground state at the classical level. We demonstrate that the phase of the superfluid wavefunction as well as the orbital angular momentum correlations exhibit a power-law decay in the degenerate manifold that is described by an emergent magnetostatic theory with three independent flux fields. Our results thus provide a novel example of critical superfluid phase with algebraic order in three dimensions. We further show that quantum fluctuations favor a Néel ordering of orbital angular moments with broken sublattice symmetry through the order-by-disorder mechanism.

Magnetic Field Induced Transition in Vanadium Spinels

We study vanadium spinels $A$V$_2$O$_4$ ($A$ = Cd, Mg) in pulsed magnetic fields up to 65 T. A jump in magnetization at $μ_0 H \approx$ 40 T is observed in the single-crystal MgV$_2$O$_4$, indicating a field induced quantum phase transition between two distinct magnetic orders. In the multiferroic CdV$_2$O$_4$, the field-induced transition is accompanied by a suppression of the electric polarization. By modeling the magnetic properties in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling characteristic of vanadium spinels, we show that both features of the field-induced transition can be successfully explained by including the effects of the local trigonal crystal field.

Degeneracy and criticality from emergent frustration in artificial spin ice

Although initially introduced to mimic the spin-ice pyrochlores, no artificial spin ice has yet exhibited the expected degenerate ice-phase with critical correlations similar to the celebrated Coulomb phase in the pyrochlore lattice. Here we study a novel artificial spin ice based on a vertex-frustrated rather than pairwise frustrated geometry and show that it exhibits a quasicritical ice phase of extensive residual entropy and, significantly, algebraic correlations. Interesting in its own regard as a novel realization of frustration in a vertex system, our lattice opens new pathways to study defects in a critical manifold and to design degeneracy in artificial magnetic nanoarrays, a task so far elusive.

Universal Renyi mutual information in classical systems: the case of kagome ice

We study the Renyi mutual information of classical systems characterized by a transfer matrix. We first establish a general relationship between the Renyi mutual information of such classical mixtures of configuration states, and the Renyi entropy of a corresponding Rokhsar-Kivelson--type quantum superposition. We then focus on chiral and nonchiral kagome-ice systems, classical spin liquids on the kagome lattice, which respectively have critical and short-range correlations. Through a mapping of the chiral kagome ice to the quantum Liftshitz critical field theory, we predict a universal subleading term in the Renyi mutual information of this classical spin liquid, which can be realized in the pyrochlore spin ice in a magnetic field. We verify our prediction with direct numerical transfer-matrix computations, and further demonstrate that the nonchiral kagome ice (and the corresponding quantum Rokhsar-Kivelson superposition) is a topologically trivial phase. Finally, we argue that the universal term in the mutual information of the chiral kagome ice is fragile against the presence of defects.

Raman scattering in a Heisenberg S=1/2 antiferromagnet on the anisotropic triangular lattice

We investigate the two-magnon Raman scattering from an anisotropic S=1/2 triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4. We find that the Raman response is very sensitive to magnon-magnon interactions and to scattering geometries, a feature that is in remarkable contrast with the polarization-independent Raman signal from the isotropic triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Since a spin-liquid ground state gives rise to a similar rotationally invariant Raman response, our results on the polarization dependence of the scattering spectrum suggest that Raman spectroscopy provides a useful probe, complementary to neutron scattering, of the ground-state properties of Cs2CuCl4, particularly whether the time-reversal symmetry is broken in the ground state.

Magnetic monopole polarons in spin ice with mixed coordination numbers

Emergent quasiparticles that arise from the fractionalization of the microscopic degrees of freedom have been one of the central themes in modern condensed matter physics. The notion of magnetic monopoles, freely moving quasiparticles fragmented from local dipole excitations, has enjoyed much success in understanding the thermodynamic, static, and transport properties of the so-called spin-ice materials. The artificial version of spin ice, where a lattice of nanoscale magnetic dipoles is sculpted out of a ferromagnetic film, provides a unique opportunity to study these unusual quasiparticles in a material-by-design approach. Here we show that the elementary excitations in the ice phase of a nano-magnetic array arranged in the pentagonal lattice are composite objects comprised of the emergent monopole and a surrounding cloud of opposite uncompensated magnetic charges.

Frustrated colloidal ordering and fully packed loops in arrays of optical traps

We propose that a system of colloidal particles interacting with a honeycomb array of optical traps that each contain three wells can be used to realize a fully packed loop model. One of the phases in this system can be mapped to Baxter's three-coloring problem, offering an easily accessible physical realization of this problem. As a function of temperature and interaction strength, we find a series of phases, including long range ordered loop or stripe states, stripes with sliding symmetries, random packed loop states, and disordered states in which the loops break apart. Our geometry could be constructed using ion trap arrays, BEC vortices in optical traps, or magnetic vortices in nanostructured superconductors.

Chiral magnetism and helimagnons in a pyrochlore antiferromagnet

Recent neutron scattering measurements on the spinel CdCr2O4 revealed a rare example of helical magnetic order in geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet. The spin spiral characterized by an incommensurate wavevector Q = 2pi (0, delta, 1) with delta ~0.09 is accompanied by a tetragonal distortion. Here we conduct a systematic study on the magnetic ground state resulting from the interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and further neighbor exchange couplings, two of the most important mechanisms for stabilizing incommensurate spin orders. We compute the low-energy spin-wave spectrum based on a microscopic spin Hamiltonian and find a dispersion relation characteristic of the helimagnons. By numerically integrating the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with realistic model parameters, an overall agreement between experiment and the numerical spectrum, lending further support to the view that a softened optical phonon triggers the magnetic transition and endows the lattice a chirality.
