Type changing, compact generalized Calabi--Yaus

We provide the first compact examples of type-changing generalized Calabi--Yau manifolds using Fei's construction of non-Kähler Calabi--Yau manifolds on branched covers of twistor spaces \cite{Fei16}. The structure, which is generically of type 1 and changes to type 3, is constructed on the product of a hyperelliptic surface of genus three and a four-torus, $Σ_3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$, with starting point a non-Kähler Calabi--Yau structure.

Massey products, sphere bundles and T-duality

We study spherical T-duality for iterated sphere bundles. We show that for a class of iterated sphere bundles the cohomological data contained in its Gysin sequences can be repackaged into data for a vanishing Massey product. We further show that if these bundles are endowed with an integral cohomology class of transgressive degree one, then they have a T-dual iterated sphere bundle, namely, the one associated to the same Massey product read backwards.

T-duality for transgressive fibrations

We extend the notion of topological T-duality from oriented sphere bundles to transgressive fibrations, a more general type fibration characterised by the abundance of transgressive elements. Examples of transgressive fibrations include principal $\mathrm{U}(n)$-bundles therefore our notion of T-duality belongs to the realm of non-Abelian T-duality. We prove that transgressive T-duals have isomorphic twisted cohomology. We then introduce Clifford--Courant algebroids, show that one can assign such an algebroid to a transgressive fibration and that transgressive T-duals have isomorphic Clifford--Courant algebroids. We provide several examples illustrating different properties of T-dual spaces. A few typos corrected in v2.

Flat Generalized Connections on Courant Algebroids

We consider a family of metric generalized connections on transitive Courant algebroids, which includes the canonical Levi-Civita connection, and study the flatness condition. We find that the building blocks for such flat transitive Courant algebroids are compact simple Lie groups. Further, we give a description of left-invariant flat Levi-Civita generalized connections on such Lie groups, which, in particular, shows the existence of non-flat ones.

Non-principal T-duality, generalized complex geometry and blow-ups

We extend the notion of T-duality to manifolds endowed with non-principal torus actions. The singularities of the torus action are controlled by a certain Lie algebroid, called the elliptic tangent bundle. Using this Lie algebroid, we explain how certain invariant generalized complex structures can be transported via T-duality. Along the way, we use the elliptic tangent bundle to define connections for these torus action, and give new insight to the classification of such actions by Haefliger-Salem.

Topological Spherical T-duality -- Dimension change from higher degree $H$-flux

Topological Spherical T-duality was introduced by Bouwknegt, Evslin and Mathai in [BEM15] as an extension of topological T-duality from $S^1$-bundles to $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-bundles endowed with closed 7-forms. This notion was further extended to sphere bundles by Lind, Sati and Westerland [LSW16] as a duality between $S^{2n-1}$-bundles endowed with closed $(4n-1)$-forms. We generalise this relation one step further and define T-duality for $S^{2n-1}$-bundles endowed with closed odd forms of arbitrary degree. The degree of the form determines the dimension of the fibers of the dual spaces. We show that $T$-duals exist and, as in the previous cases, $T$-dual spaces have isomorphic twisted cohomology. We finish by introducing a version of Courant algebroids which is compatible with spherical T-duality.

On the Equivalence of Generalized Ricci Curvatures

We prove the equivalence between the several notions of generalized Ricci curvature found in the literature. As an application, we characterize when the total generalized Ricci tensor is symmetric.

A neighbourhood theorem for submanifolds in generalized complex geometry

We study neighbourhoods of submanifolds in generalized complex geometry. Our first main result provides sufficient criteria for such a submanifold to admit a neighbourhood on which the generalized complex structure is B-field equivalent to a holomorphic Poisson structure. This is intimately tied with our second main result, which is a rigidity theorem for generalized complex deformations of holomorphic Poisson structures. Specifically, on a compact manifold with boundary we provide explicit conditions under which any generalized complex perturbation of a holomorphic Poisson structure is B-field equivalent to another holomorphic Poisson structure. The proofs of these results require two analytical tools: Hodge decompositions on almost complex manifolds with boundary, and the Nash-Moser algorithm. As a concrete application of these results, we show that on a four-dimensional generalized complex submanifold which is generically symplectic, a neighbourhood of the entire complex locus is B-field equivalent to a holomorphic Poisson structure. Furthermore, we use the neighbourhood theorem to develop the theory of blowing down submanifolds in generalized complex geometry.

Poisson structures with compact support

We explicitly construct several Poisson structures with compact support. For example, we show that any Poisson structure on $\R^n$ with polynomial coefficients of degree at most two can be modified outside an open ball, such that it becomes compactly supported. We also show that a symplectic manifold with either contact or cosymplectic boundary admits a Poisson structure which vanishes to infinite order at the boundary and agrees with the original symplectic structure outside an arbitrarily small tubular neighbourhood of the boundary. As a consequence, we prove that any even-dimensional manifold admits a Poisson structure which is symplectic outside a codimension one subset.

Fibrations in semi-toric and generalized complex geometry

This paper studies the interplay between self-crossing boundary Lefschetz fibrations and generalized complex structures. We show that these fibrations arise from the moment maps in semi-toric geometry and use them to construct self-crossing stable generalized complex four-manifolds using Gompf--Thurston methods for Lie algebroids. These results bring forth further structure on several previously known examples of generalized complex manifolds. We moreover show that these fibrations are compatible with taking connected sums, and use this to prove a singularity trade result between two types of singularities occurring in these fibrations.

Self-crossing stable generalized complex structures

We extend the notion of (smooth) stable generalized complex structures to allow for an anticanonical section with normal self-crossing singularities. This weakening not only allows for a number of natural examples in higher dimensions but also sheds some light into the smooth case in dimension four. We show that in four dimensions there is a natural connected sum operation for these structures as well as a smoothing operation which changes a self-crossing stable generalized complex structure into a smooth stable generalized complex structure on the same manifold. This allows us to construct large families of stable generalized complex manifolds.

Classification of boundary Lefschetz fibrations over the disc

We show that a four-manifold admits a boundary Lefschetz fibration over the disc if and only if it is diffeomorphic to $S^1 \times S^3\# n \overline{\mathbb{C} P^2}$, $\# m\mathbb{C} P^2 \#n\overline{\mathbb{C} P^2}$ or $\# m (S^2 \times S^2)$. Given the relation between boundary Lefschetz fibrations and stable generalized complex structures, we conclude that the manifolds $S^1 \times S^3\# n \overline{\mathbb{C} P^2}$, $\#(2m+1)\mathbb{C} P^2 \#n\overline{\mathbb{C} P^2}$ and $\# (2m+1) S^2 \times S^2$ admit stable structures whose type change locus has a single component and are the only four-manifolds whose stable structure arise from boundary Lefschetz fibrations over the disc.

Fibrations and stable generalized complex structures

A generalized complex structure is called stable if its defining anticanonical section vanishes transversally, on a codimension-two submanifold. Alternatively, it is a zero elliptic residue symplectic structure in the elliptic tangent bundle associated to this submanifold. We develop Gompf-Thurston symplectic techniques adapted to Lie algebroids, and use these to construct stable generalized complex structures out of log-symplectic structures. In particular we introduce the notion of a boundary Lefschetz fibration for this purpose and describe how they can be obtained from genus one Lefschetz fibrations over the disk.

Type one generalized Calabi--Yaus

We study type one generalized complex and generalized Calabi--Yau manifolds. We introduce a cohomology class that obstructs the existence of a globally defined, closed 2-form which agrees with the symplectic form on the leaves of the generalized complex structure, the twisting class. We prove that in a compact, type one, 4n-dimensional generalized complex manifold the Euler characteristic must be even and equal to the signature modulo four. The generalized Calabi--Yau condition places much stronger constrains: a compact type one generalized Calabi--Yau fibers over the 2-torus and if the structure has one compact leaf, then this fibration can be chosen to be the fibration by the symplectic leaves of the generalized complex structure. If the twisting class vanishes, one can always deform the structure so that it has a compact leaf. Finally we prove that every symplectic fibration over the 2-torus admits a type one generalized Calabi--Yau structure.

Examples and counter-examples of log-symplectic manifolds

We study topological properties of log-symplectic structures and produce examples of compact manifolds with such structures. Notably we show that several symplectic manifolds do not admit log-symplectic structures and several log-symplectic manifolds do not admit symplectic structures, for example #m CP^2 # n bar(CP^2)$ has log-symplectic structures if and only if m,n>0 while they only have symplectic structures for m=1. We introduce surgeries that produce log-symplectic manifolds out of symplectic manifolds and show that for any simply connected 4-manifold M, the manifolds M # (S^2 \times S^2) and M # CP^2 # CP^2bar have log-symplectic structures and any compact oriented log-symplectic four-manifold can be transformed into a collection of symplectic manifolds by reversing these surgeries.

Fibrations and log-symplectic structures

Log-symplectic structures are Poisson structures $π$ on $X^{2n}$ for which $\bigwedge^n π$ vanishes transversally. By viewing them as symplectic forms in a Lie algebroid, the $b$-tangent bundle, we use symplectic techniques to obtain existence results for log-symplectic structures on total spaces of fibration-like maps. More precisely, we introduce the notion of a $b$-hyperfibration and show that they give rise to log-symplectic structures. Moreover, we link log-symplectic structures to achiral Lefschetz fibrations and folded-symplectic structures.

Blow-ups in generalized complex geometry

We study blow-ups in generalized complex geometry. To that end we introduce the concept of holomorphic ideal, which allows one to define a blow-up in the category of smooth manifolds. We then investigate which generalized complex submanifolds are suitable for blowing up. Two classes naturally appear; generalized Poisson submanifolds and generalized Poisson transversals, submanifolds which look complex, respectively symplectic in transverse directions. We show that generalized Poisson submanifolds carry a canonical holomorphic ideal and give a necessary and sufficient condition for the corresponding blow-up to be generalized complex. For the generalized Poisson transversals we give a normal form for a neighborhood of the submanifold, and use that to define a generalized complex blow-up, which is up to deformation independent of choices.

Stable generalized complex structures

A stable generalized complex structure is one that is generically symplectic but degenerates along a real codimension two submanifold, where it defines a generalized Calabi-Yau structure. We introduce a Lie algebroid which allows us to view such structures as symplectic forms. This allows us to construct new examples of stable structures, and also to define period maps for their deformations in which the background three-form flux is either fixed or not, proving the unobstructedness of both deformation problems. We then use the same tools to establish local normal forms for the degeneracy locus and for Lagrangian branes. Applying our normal forms to the four-dimensional case, we prove that any compact stable generalized complex 4-manifold has a symplectic completion, in the sense that it can be modified near its degeneracy locus to produce a compact symplectic 4-manifold.
