Hodge theory and deformations of SKT manifolds

We use tools from generalized complex geometry to develop the theory of SKT (a.k.a. pluriclosed Hermitian) manifolds and more generally manifolds with special holonomy with respect to a metric connection with closed skew-symmetric torsion. We develop Hodge theory on such manifolds showing how the reduction of the holonomy group causes a decomposition of the twisted cohomology. For SKT manifolds this decomposition is accompanied by an identity between different Laplacian operators and forces the collapse of a spectral sequence at the first page. Further we study the deformation theory of SKT structures, identifying the space where the obstructions live. We illustrate our theory with examples based on Calabi--Eckmann manifolds, instantons, Hopf surfaces and Lie groups.

Reduced holonomy and Hodge theory

We develop Hodge theory for a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with a background closed 3-form, H. Precisely, we prove that if the metric connections with torsion $\pm H$ have holonomy groups $G_\pm$, then the $d^H$-Laplacian preserves the irreducible representations of the Lie algebras of the holonomy groups on the space of forms.

Generalized Kaehler geometry of instanton moduli spaces

We prove that Hitchin's generalized Kaehler structure on the moduli space of instantons over a compact, even generalized Kaehler four-manifold may be obtained by generalized Kaehler reduction, in analogy with the usual Kaehler case. The underlying reduction of Courant algebroids is a realization of Donaldson's $μ$-map in degree three.

Blow-up of generalized complex 4-manifolds

We introduce blow-up and blow-down operations for generalized complex 4-manifolds. Combining these with a surgery analogous to the logarithmic transform, we then construct generalized complex structures on nCP2 # m \bar{CP2} for n odd, a family of 4-manifolds which admit neither complex nor symplectic structures unless n=1. We also extend the notion of a symplectic elliptic Lefschetz fibration, so that it expresses a generalized complex 4-manifold as a fibration over a two-dimensional manifold with boundary.

Goto's generalized Kaehler stability theorem

In these notes we give a shortened and more direct proof of Goto's generalized Kaehler stability theorem stating that if (J_1,J_2) is a generalized kaehler structure for which J_2 is determined by a nowhere vanishing closed form, then small deformations of J_1 can be coupled with small deformations of J_2 so that the pair remains a generalized Kaehler structure.

Reduction of metric structures on Courant algebroids

We use the procedure of reduction of Courant algebroids to reduce strong KT, hyper KT and generalized Kaehler structures on Courant algebroids. This allows us to recover results from the literature as well as explain from a different angle some of the features observed there in. As an example, we prove that the moduli space of instantons of a bundle over a SKT/HKT/generalized Kähler manifold is endowed with the same type of structure as the original manifold.

Generalized complex geometry and T-duality

We describe how generalized complex geometry, which interpolates between complex and symplectic geometry, is compatible with T-duality, a relation between quantum field theories discovered by physicists. T-duality relates topologically distinct torus bundles, and prescribes a method for transporting geometrical structures between them. We describe how this relation may be understood as a Courant algebroid isomorphism between the spaces in question. This then allows us to transport Dirac structures, generalized Riemannian metrics, generalized complex and generalized Kahler structures, extending the "Buscher rules" well-known to physicists. Finally, we re-interpret T-duality as a Courant reduction, and explain that T-duality between generalized complex manifolds may be viewed as a generalized complex submanifold (D-brane) of the product, in a way that establishes a direct analogy with the Fourier-Mukai transform.

Blowing up generalized Kahler 4-manifolds

We show that the blow-up of a generalized Kahler 4-manifold in a nondegenerate complex point admits a generalized Kahler metric. As with the blow-up of complex surfaces, this metric may be chosen to coincide with the original outside a tubular neighbourhood of the exceptional divisor. To accomplish this, we develop a blow-up operation for bi-Hermitian manifolds.

On non-formality of a simply-connected symplectic 8-manifold

We show an alternative construction of the first example of a simply-connected compact symplectic non-formal 8-manifold given in arXiv:math/0506449. We also give an alternative proof of its non-formality using higher order Massey products.

Generalized Kahler and hyper-Kahler quotients

We develop a theory of reduction for generalized Kahler and hyper-Kahler structures which uses the generalized Riemannian metric in an essential way, and which is not described with reference solely to a single generalized complex structure. We show that our construction specializes to the usual theory of Kahler and hyper-Kahler reduction, and it gives a way to view usual hyper-Kahler quotients in terms of generalized Kahler reduction.

Formality in generalized Kahler geometry

We prove that no nilpotent Lie algebra admits an invariant generalized Kaehler structure. This is done by showing that a certain differential graded algebra associated to a generalized complex manifold is formal in the generalized Kaehler case, while it is never formal for a generalized complex structure on a nilpotent Lie algebra.

Reduction of Courant algebroids and generalized complex structures

We present a theory of reduction for Courant algebroids as well as Dirac structures, generalized complex, and generalized Kähler structures which interpolates between holomorphic reduction of complex manifolds and symplectic reduction. The enhanced symmetry group of a Courant algebroid leads us to define \emph{extended} actions and a generalized notion of moment map. Key examples of generalized Kähler reduced spaces include new explicit bi-Hermitian metrics on $\CC P^2$.

A surgery for generalized complex structures on 4-manifolds

We introduce a surgery for generalized complex manifolds whose input is a symplectic 4-manifold containing a symplectic 2-torus with trivial normal bundle and whose output is a 4-manifold endowed with a generalized complex structure exhibiting type change along a 2-torus. Performing this surgery on a K3 surface, we obtain a generalized complex structure on 3 CP^2 # 19 \overline{CP^2}, which has vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants and hence does not admit complex or symplectic structure.

The Lefschetz property, formality and blowing up in symplectic geometry

In this paper we study the behaviour of the Lefschetz property under the blow-up construction. We show that it is possible to reduce the dimension of the kernel of the Lefschetz map if we blow up along a suitable submanifold satisfying the Lefschetz property. We use that, together with results about Massey products, to construct nonformal (simply connected) symplectic manifolds satisfying the Lefschetz property.

New aspects of the ddc-lemma

We produce examples of generalized complex structures on manifolds by generalizing results from symplectic and complex geometry. We produce generalized complex structures on symplectic fibrations over a generalized complex base. We study in some detail different invariant generalized complex structures on compact Lie groups and provide a thorough description of invariant structures on nilmanifolds, achieving a classification on 6-nilmanifolds. We study implications of the `dd^c-lemma' in the generalized complex setting. Similarly to the standard dd^c-lemma, its generalized version induces a decomposition of the cohomology of a manifold and causes the degeneracy of the spectral sequence associated to the splitting d = \del + \delbar at E_1. But, in contrast with the dd^c-lemma, its generalized version is not preserved by symplectic blow-up or blow-down (in the case of a generalized complex structure induced by a symplectic structure) and does not imply formality.

Formality of k-connected spaces in 4k+3 and 4k+4 dimensions

Using the concept of s-formality we are able to extend the bounds of a Theorem of Miller and show that a compact k-connected 4k+3- or 4k+4-manifold with b_{k+1}=1 is formal. We study k connected n-manifolds, n= 4k+3, 4k+4, with a hard Lefschetz-like property and prove that in this case if b_{k+1}=2, then the manifold is formal, while, in 4k+3-dimensions, if b_{k+1}=3 all Massey products vanish. We finish with examples inspired by symplectic geometry and manifolds with special holonomy.

Generalized complex structures on nilmanifolds

We show that all 6-dimensional nilmanifolds admit generalized complex structures. This includes the five classes of nilmanifold which admit no known complex or symplectic structure. Furthermore, we classify all 6-dimensional nilmanifolds according to which of the four types of left-invariant generalized complex structure they admit. We also show that the two components of the left-invariant complex moduli space for the Iwasawa manifold are no longer disjoint when they are viewed in the generalized complex moduli space. Finally, we provide an 8-dimensional nilmanifold which admits no left-invariant generalized complex structure.
