Energy production rates in fluid mixtures of inelastic rough hard spheres

The aim of this work is to explore the combined effect of polydispersity and roughness on the partial energy production rates and on the total cooling rate of a granular fluid mixture. We consider a mixture of inelastic rough hard spheres of different number densities, masses, diameters, moments of inertia, and mutual coefficients of normal and tangential restitution. Starting from the first equation of the BBGKY hierarchy, the collisional energy production rates associated with the translational and rotational temperatures ($T_i^\text{tr}$ and $T_i^\text{rot}$) are expressed in terms of two-body average values. Next, those average values are estimated by assuming a velocity distribution function based on maximum-entropy arguments, allowing us to express the energy production rates and the total cooling rate in terms of the partial temperatures and the parameters of the mixture. Finally, the results are applied to the homogeneous cooling state of a binary mixture and the influence of inelasticity and roughness on the temperature ratios $T_1^\text{tr}/T_1^\text{rot}$, $T_2^\text{tr}/T_1^\text{tr}$, and $T_2^\text{rot}/T_1^\text{rot}$ is analyzed.

Entropy, entropy flux and entropy supply rate of granular fluids

The aim of this work is to analyze the entropy, entropy flux and entropy supply rate of granular fluids within the frameworks of the Boltzmann equation and continuum thermodynamics. It is shown that the entropy inequality for a granular gas that follows from the Boltzmann equation differs from the one of a simple fluid due to the presence of a term which can be identified as the rate of entropy supply density. From the knowledge of a non-equilibrium distribution function -- valid for for processes closed to equilibrium and quasi-elastic restitution coefficients -- it is obtained that the rate of entropy supply density is equal to the rate of internal energy production density divided by the temperature and the entropy flux is equal to the heat flux vector divided by the temperature. A thermodynamic theory of a granular fluid is also developed whose objective is the determination of the basic fields of mass density, momentum density and internal energy density. The constitutive laws are restricted by the principle of material frame indifference and by the entropy principle. Through the exploitation of the entropy principle with Lagrange multipliers, it is shown that the results obtained from the kinetic theory for granular gases concerning the rate of entropy supply density and entropy flux are valid in general for processes close to equilibrium of granular fluids, where linearized constitutive equations hold.

Fermion fields in Einstein-Cartan theory and the accelerated-decelerated transition in a primordial Universe

In this work the accelerated-decelerated transition in a primordial Universe is investigated by using the dynamics of fermion fields within the context of Einstein-Cartan theory, where apart from the curvature the space-time is also described by a torsion field. The model analyzed here has only a fermion field as the source of the gravitational field. The term associated with the spin of the fermion field plays the role of the inflaton which contributes to an accelerated regime whereas the one related to the fermion mass behaves as a matter field and is the responsible for a decelerated regime. Hence, by taking into account the spin of a massive fermion field it is possible to characterize the transition from the accelerated to the decelerated periods of the primordial Universe.

Tachyonization of the $\La$CDM cosmological model

In this work a tachyonization of the $Λ$CDM model for a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time is proposed. A tachyon field and a cosmological constant are considered as the sources of the gravitational field. Starting from a stability analysis and from the exact solutions for a standard tachyon field driven by a given potential, the search for a large set of cosmological models which contain the $Λ$CDM model is investigated. By the use of internal transformations two new kinds of tachyon fields are derived from the standard tachyon field, namely, a complementary and a phantom tachyon fields. Numerical solutions for the three kinds of tachyon fields are determined and it is shown that the standard and complementary tachyon fields reproduces the $Λ$CDM model as a limiting case. The standard tachyon field can also describe a transition from an accelerated to a decelerated regime, behaving as an inflaton field at early times and as a matter field at late times. The complementary tachyon field always behaves as a matter field. The phantom tachyon field is characterized by a rapid expansion where its energy density increases with time.

Tachyon and Quintessence Brane-World Universe

Using tachyon or quintessence fields along with a barotropic fluid on the brane we examine the different cosmological stages in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker(FRW) universe, from the first radiation scenario to the later era dominated by cosmic string networks. We introduce a new algorithm to generalize previous works on exact solutions and apply it to study tachyon and quintessence fields localized on the brane and study the low and high energy regimes. We show that the tachyon and quintessence fields are driven by an inverse power law potential. Finally, we find several simples exacts solutions for tachyon and/or quintessence fields.

Constraining non-minimally coupled tachyon fields by Noether symmetry

A model for a spatially flat homogeneous and isotropic Universe whose gravitational sources are a pressureless matter field and a tachyon field non-minimally coupled to the gravitational field is analyzed. Noether symmetry is used to find the expressions for the potential density and for the coupling function, and it is shown that both must be exponential functions of the tachyon field. Two cosmological solutions are investigated: (i) for the early Universe whose only source of the gravitational field is a non-minimally coupled tachyon field which behaves as an inflaton and leads to an exponential accelerated expansion and (ii) for the late Universe whose gravitational sources are a pressureless matter field and a non-minimally coupled tachyon field which plays the role of dark energy and is the responsible of the decelerated-accelerated transition period.

Noether symmetry for non-minimally coupled fermion fields

A cosmological model where a fermion field is non-minimally coupled with the gravitational field is studied. By applying Noether symmetry the possible functions for the potential density of the fermion field and for the coupling are determined. Cosmological solutions are found showing that the non-minimally coupled fermion field behaves as an inflaton describing an accelerated inflationary scenario, whereas the minimally coupled fermion field describes a decelerated period being identified as dark matter.

Phantom cosmologies and fermions

Form invariance transformations can be used for constructing phantom cosmologies starting with conventional cosmological models. In this work we reconsider the scalar field case and extend the discussion to fermionic fields, where the "phantomization" process exhibits a new class of possible accelerated regimes. As an application we analyze the cosmological constant group for a fermionic seed fluid.

Cosmological model with interactions in the dark sector

A cosmological model is proposed for the current Universe consisted of non-interacting baryonic matter and interacting dark components. The dark energy and dark matter are coupled through their effective barotropic indexes, which are considered as functions of the ratio between their energy densities. It is investigated two cases where the ratio is asymptotically stable and their parameters are adjusted by considering best fits to Hubble function data. It is shown that the deceleration parameter, the densities parameters, and the luminosity distance have the correct behavior which is expected for a viable present scenario of the Universe.

Fokker-Planck type equations for a simple gas and for a semi-relativistic Brownian motion from a relativistic kinetic theory

A covariant Fokker-Planck type equation for a simple gas and an equation for the Brownian motion are derived from a relativistic kinetic theory based on the Boltzmann equation. For the simple gas the dynamic friction four-vector and the diffusion tensor are identified and written in terms of integrals which take into account the collision processes. In the case of Brownian motion, the Brownian particles are considered as non-relativistic whereas the background gas behaves as a relativistic gas. A general expression for the semi-relativistic viscous friction coefficient is obtained and the particular case of constant differential cross-section is analyzed for which the non-relativistic and ultra relativistic limiting cases are calculated.

Acceleration field of a Universe modeled as a mixture of scalar and matter fields

A model of the Universe as a mixture of a scalar (inflaton or rolling tachyon from the string theory) and a matter field (classical particles) is analyzed. The particles are created at the expense of the gravitational energy through an irreversible process whereas the scalar field is supposed to interact only with itself and to be minimally coupled with the gravitational field. The irreversible processes of particle creation are related to the non-equilibrium pressure within the framework of the extended (causal or second-order) thermodynamic theory. The scalar field (inflaton or tachyon) is described by an exponential potential density added by a parameter which represents its asymptotic value and can be interpreted as the vacuum energy. This model can simulate three phases of the acceleration field of the Universe, namely,(a) an inflationary epoch with a positive acceleration followed by a decrease of the acceleration field towards zero, (b) a past decelerated period where the acceleration field decreases to a maximum negative value followed by an increase towards zero, and (c) a present accelerated epoch. For the energy densities there exist also three distinct epochs which begin with a scalar field dominated period followed by a matter field dominated epoch and coming back to a scalar field dominated phase.

Applications to cosmological models of a complex scalar field coupled to a U(1) vector gauge field

We consider the Abelian model of a complex scalar field coupled to a gauge field within the framework of General Relativity and search for cosmological solutions. For this purpose we assume a homogeneous, isotropic and uncharged Universe and a homogeneous scalar field. This model may be inserted in several contexts in which the scalar field might act as inflaton or quintessence, whereas the gauge field might play the role of radiation or dark matter, for instance. Particularly, we propose two such models: (i) in the first, the inflaton field decays to massive vector bosons that we regard as dark-matter; (ii) in the second, due to its coupling to radiation the scalar field is displaced from its ground state and drives an accelerated expansion of the Universe, playing the role of quintessence. We observe that the equations are quite simplified and easier to be solved if we assume a roughly monochromatic radiation spectrum.

Palatini approach to 1/R gravity and its implications to the late Universe

By applying the Palatini approach to the 1/R-gravity model it is possible to explain the present accelerated expansion of the Universe. Investigation of the late Universe limiting case shows that: (i) due to the curvature effects the energy-momentum tensor of the matter field is not covariantly conserved; (ii) however, it is possible to reinterpret the curvature corrections as sources of the gravitational field, by defining a modified energy-momentum tensor; (iii) with the adoption of this modified energy-momentum tensor the Einstein's field equations are recovered with two main modifications: the first one is the weakening of the gravitational effects of matter whereas the second is the emergence of an effective varying "cosmological constant"; (iv) there is a transition in the evolution of the cosmic scale factor from a power-law scaling $a\propto t^{11/18}$ to an asymptotically exponential scaling $a\propto \exp(t)$; (v) the energy density of the matter field scales as $ρ_m\propto (1/a)^{36/11}$; (vi) the present age of the Universe and the decelerated-accelerated transition redshift are smaller than the corresponding ones in the $Λ$CDM model.
